continues to surge in popularity, but users of illegal add-ons have been put on alert after a major jail sentence was handed out in the courts.

Research has suggested Kodi – which offers access to thousands of channels – is being used in more than five million UK homes.

Kodi software is not illegal, but developers can produce third-party add-ons that provide free access to pirated and illegal content.

These apps allow users to stream premium content, like paid-for sports and movie channels for free.

The illegal add-ons are being targeted by ISPs, government agencies, broadcasters and rights holders.

And now a UK court has handed out the biggest jail sentence so far for sellers of illegal streaming devices.

Two men who supplied “Kodi-type” illegal streaming devices have been jailed for four and half years each at Newcastle Crown Court.

John Dodds and Jason Richards were jailed earlier this week after pleading guilty to conspiracy to defraud.

They sold hundreds of devices that enabled customers to watch Premier League matches via unauthorised access to Sky Sports, BT Sport and illegal foreign channels.

Customers were also regularly left with devices that had their broadcast signal interrupted or did not work properly.

Dodds and Richards were arrested after an investigation instigated by the Premier League and FACT.

FACT said the sellers’ criminal activity saw them fraudulently earn at least £1.5million through sales.

Premier League Director of Legal Services Kevin Plumb said: “This is a hugely significant judgment as it provides further evidence that selling these devices is illegal and can result in a prison sentence.

“We have seen several reports from people who have purchased illicit streaming devices only to be left with no service when the seller is forced to cease trading because the law has caught up with them, or their broadcast signal has been interrupted by our enforcement measures.

“We hope this verdict gets the message out that selling or using these devices is simply not worth the risk.

“The many things fans enjoy about the Premier League – the ability that clubs have to develop and acquire talented players, to build and improve stadiums, and to support communities and schools – is all predicated on being able to market, sell and protect rights.

“We are pleased the Courts have recognised that in this case.”

Kieron Sharp, the CEO of FACT, added: “This result is an excellent example of how serious an issue illegal streaming is.

“TV boxes and sticks that allow consumers to illegally stream sports, such as Premier League matches, not only have a huge effect on the content owners and broadcasters but the thousands of people working tirelessly behind the scenes to put the sport on our screens.

“This is no longer a grey area – selling devices like this or using one at home to watch content you normally would pay for is breaking the law.

“This sentencing should send out a very clear and strong message to anyone involved in the sale of these devices that it is very much illegal and that they risk spending time behind bars.”

The Premier League is currently engaged in a comprehensive copyright protection programme that has included obtaining a High Court Order that compels the UK’s Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block illegal streams of its content.

This led to a seller of illicit streaming devices based in Nottingham being jailed for four years.

The latest jail sentence comes as the UK Government recently provided guidance stating that the use of illicit streaming devices is illegal.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Kodi – Five things every users should know

The revolution show no signs of stopping with recent statistics suggesting it’s now being used in over 30 million homes across the globe.

This legal TV player has had a meteoric rise to success and it seems there’s one very big reason why so many people love it.

The Kodi player can instantly be used to view and stream a swathe of premium content for free using so-called add-ons.

This way of watching movies, sport and TV shows has become so popular it’s thought that over 70 per cent of Kodi adopters use the player for illegal purposes.

Along with Kodi’s popularity booming a report out last week by .

This means there were over 300 billion visits to pirate sites in 2017.

Speaking about the data Andy Chatterley, co-founder and CEO, MUSO, said: “There is a belief that the rise in popularity of on-demand services – such as Netflix and Spotify – have solved piracy, but that theory simply doesn’t stack up.

“Our data suggests that piracy is more popular than ever.

There has been some success in blocking many streams but even this hasn’t stopped online piracy.

Torrent sites such as The Pirate Bay have seen an increase in traffic as users try beat the streaming bans by downloading illegal content instead.

So, with Kodi and illegal streaming on the rise is it really safe to join this ever-growing revolution? Here’s five things everyone should know before attempting to view premium content for free.

Kodi TV add onsPH

Kodi is legal but add-ons may mean you are watching content illegally

KODI IS NOT ILLEGAL BUT USING ADD-ONS CAN BE

The Kodi TV player is totally legal with the team behind it actively distancing themselves from illegal streaming and its consequences.

However, Kodi can be easily adapted via add-ons to allow users to stream a range of content without permission.

It’s these add-ons that are under the spotlight of the authorities with many closing themselves down in recent months in fear of being fined or facing legal action.

Although it’s unlikely that Kodi users will be hit a punishment it has been suggested that penalties could be dished out in the future with FACT recently confirming that they will “also be looking at, at some point, the end user. The reason for end users to come into this is that they are committing criminal offences.”

The recent Digital Economy Bill also raised the prison terms to 10 years for the worst offenders.

If you’re worried about being hit with a fine you are best paying for content via services such as Netflix, Amazon and Sky.

MALWARE IS A PROBLEM YOU SHOULDN’T IGNORE

It’s probably something most people don’t think twice about but visiting streaming sites can lead to more problems than just a slap on the wrist.

Malware can be a huge issue when streaming online and it’s a problem that should not be ignored.

FACT recently revealed that criminals behind digital piracy often make the content freely available illegally to “bait” a large number of visitors.

They can then make money by charging other cyber criminals to put malware on a site which can then hijack a user’s computer.

The FACT report cited one study that looked at US “content theft sites”.

The research found one in every three websites exposed users to malware.

FACT added: “Internet users who visited content theft sites were 28 times more likely to get malware from those sites than from legitimate websites or content providers.”

Premier league streaming blocks are working

This blocking order is a game-changer in our efforts to tackle the supply and use of illicit streams

Kevin Plumb, Premier League Director of Legal Services,

STREAMS ARE BEING BLOCKED

If you’ve ditched Sky in the hope of watching content without paying you might be disappointed as many streams are being blocked.

The Premier League and UEFA has both put bans in place which allow them to instantly stop any illegal broadcasting of their content.

And it seems these blocks are working with Sky recently reporting that streams are now much harder to find and access.

Speaking to the BBC, Premier League Director of Legal Services, Kevin Plumb said: “This blocking order is a game-changer in our efforts to tackle the supply and use of illicit streams of our content.”

“It will allow us to quickly and effectively block and disrupt the illegal broadcast of Premier League football via any means, including so called ‘pre-loaded Kodi boxes.

“The protection of our copyright, and the investment made by our broadcast partners, is hugely important to the Premier League and the future health of English football.”

YOU CAN FACE A HUGE FINE

If you think you’ll escape being fined it’s worth knowing that those who stream content are being charged.

One recent incident saw a member of the public slapped with a £5,000 charge after they streamed the Joshua vs Klitschko live on Facebook.

The stream, which was viewed by some 4,250 people at its peak, was traced back to the Sky account holder, Craig Foster, of Scarborough.

Foster says he received a number of letters from Foot Anstey LLP, a law firm representing Sky, following the stream.

Neil Parkes, Partner at Foot Anstey LLP, told The Independent: “Mr Foster broke the law and illegally shared copyright protected content with thousands of people online.

“He has since acknowledged his wrongdoing, apologised for his actions and signed a legally binding agreement in which he agrees to pay a sum of £5,000 to Sky.”

Illegal streaming can increase your risk of malware

STREAMING DEVICES CAN BE DANGEROUS

There’s been a huge surge of so-called Kodi boxes arriving in the UK.

These devices, which can be purchased online, often arrive full-loaded with add-ons giving owners instant access to streams.

With prices often starting from below £100 these can be hugely tempting but its worth knowing the risks.

A recent report found that many of these set-top boxes didn’t pass strict electrical test making them a fire risk.

The research from Electrical Safety First, the UK’s electrical safety experts, and FACT, the UK’s leading intellectual property protection organisation, demonstrated the risk posed by these illicit streaming devices.

Experts conducted a series of product safety tests on a number of popular Kodi-style streaming boxes – and found 100 per cent failed to meet national electrical safety regulations.

Steve Curtler, Electrical Safety First

According to the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), more than one million illicit streaming boxes have been sold in the UK within the last two years.

That represents a significant risk to the general public.

Product Safety Manager at Electrical Safety First, Steve Curtler said: “This year consumers thinking about buying an illegal streaming device for Christmas need to know that by plugging them into their TV they could be potentially be putting themselves, their home and their family at risk.

“We urge anyone with one of these devices to unplug it and stop using it immediately.

“Not only are these devices breaking the law, but they could be putting your loved ones at risk.”

is fast becoming one of the world’s most popular online TV Players.

The favoured software is now thought to have over 30 million users across the world and that number continues to grow at an alarming rate.

Kodi is not illegal but it can be used to view premium content without a subscription via add-ons.

It’s these add-ons that are causing huge concern for content makers, ISPs and the authorities.

Streaming or downloading content without permission is illegal and some UK ISPs have recently begun warning broadband users who download copyrighted material.

In an effort to lower piracy rates across the UK, leading Internet service providers will send out emails from the Get It Right campaign to those who have download copyrighted material online.

The email cautions subscribers they have 20 days to stop downloading copyrighted material using peer-to-peer websites.

However, one popular service is now giving out advice to its users on how to avoid being traced.

TVADDONS recently posted an article on its website telling users how they can avoid their ISP tracking what they are doing online.

The post also reveals details on how to get around Geoblocking and to avoid being caught when downloading torrents.

In a message on the site TVADDONS states: “Internet services providers used to be the ones that fought for internet freedoms, they wanted the internet to be something that could be enjoyed universally.

“Over the years, almost every internet service provider in the world has either been acquired by (or expanded into) larger media conglomerates who had monopolized the distribution of entertainment and media prior to the arrival of high speed internet.

“We’re beginning to see governments and internet services providers blocking more and more content on a daily basis.

“It looks like the free internet is being lost to the status-quo.”

The advice centres around the use of VPNs (virtual private network) which let you connect to the web via a server run by a unique provider.

VPNs are legal but users should be aware that streaming content or downloading files without permission is not.

Speaking last year Kieron Sharp, the chief executive of the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), said those who use illegal Kodi add-ons “are committing criminal offences”.

Speaking to The Independent he said: “What we’ve been looking at in conjunction with many of our clients and members are the different levels of crime being committed.

“There’s the manufacture and importation of devices, and then the distribution and selling of those. We’re also looking at the people who are providing the apps and add-ons, the developers.

“And then we’ll also be looking at, at some point, the end user. The reason for end users to come into this is that they are committing criminal offences.”

Forget Kodi and Pirate Bay – This popular streaming site could be next to face SHUTDOWN https://briefnews.eu/forget-kodi-and-pirate-bay-this-popular-streaming-site-could-be-next-to-face-shutdown/ https://briefnews.eu/forget-kodi-and-pirate-bay-this-popular-streaming-site-could-be-next-to-face-shutdown/#respond Sat, 17 Mar 2018 09:13:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/forget-kodi-and-pirate-bay-this-popular-streaming-site-could-be-next-to-face-shutdown/

Illegal streaming continues to come under the spotlight with blocks already stopping millions using TV Players, such as , from watching content without permission.

And after a recent discussion in the saying: “The U.S. is acting swiftly on Intellectual Property theft.

“We cannot allow this to happen as it has for many years!”

Now it seems another way of streaming illegal content is coming under pressure.

A recent investigation by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has discovered a new threat which is based in Vietnam.

And it’s so bad it’s being officially called the world’s most popular illegal movie site.

“Right now, the most popular illegal site in the world, 123movies.to (at this point), is operated from Vietnam, and has 98 million visitors a month,” Jan van Voorn, executive vice president & chief of Global Content Protection at the MPA said in a quote obtained by e.vnexpress.net.

“There are more services like this [123movies] – sites that are not helpful for local legitimate businesses,” added Voorn, who is working with the Office of the Police Investigation Agency (C44) to tackle the problem.

It’s unclear if this site is now being closed down but pressure is clearly growing on those that stream content illegally.

Here in the UK there have already been a number of arrests and fines handed out to people caught selling so-called “fully loaded” Kodi boxes.

And the feverishly-anticipated fight between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko live on Facebook was fined £5,000 early this year.

The UK government’s Digital Economy Act, which came into force last year, means anyone caught sharing illegal files in the UK could now be imprisoned for up to 10 years.

Until now the maximum jail term for copyright infringement was two years but this has now been increased to a maximum of 10.

Minister of State for Digital and Culture at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport Matt Hancock said: “I’m delighted the Digital Economy Act has become law.

“This legislation will help build a more connected and stronger economy.

“The Act will enable major improvements in broadband rollout, better support for consumers, better protection for children on the Internet, and further transformation of government services.”

This new ruling is clearly aimed at those sharing files on a mass scale but user who watch live streams via TV players such as Kodi are also being warned.

Kieron Sharp, FACT Chief Executive, said: “Consumers need to be aware that devices that allow you access to premium pay-for TV channels without a legitimate subscription, or access to films that are not yet available to rent or buy, are illegal.

“Whilst end users are not a target, they could get swept up in one of our operations and become part of the whole criminal investigation, which could lead to prosecution alongside the suppliers, retailers and importers”

Kodi BLOCKS MILLIONS from blockbuster new update https://briefnews.eu/kodi-blocks-millions-from-blockbuster-new-update/ https://briefnews.eu/kodi-blocks-millions-from-blockbuster-new-update/#respond Sun, 11 Mar 2018 17:56:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kodi-blocks-millions-from-blockbuster-new-update/

Kodi has pushed-out an early version of its all-new software.

The non-profit confirmed the launch of an early version of its latest software in a blog post earlier this week.

The blockbuster new update, branded Leia in tribute to the late Carrie Fisher, is currently in alpha – a very early version of the software.

Kodi is poised to bring a swathe of new features and improvements to the hugely-successful Kodi media player with v18.

Leia brings support for Google Assistant on Android TV set-ups, better support for higher resolutions like 4K and 8K, and numerous improvements to the software to make it better at handling live television.

With Kodi v18, Android users will be able to move the Kodi app on their smartphone to the microSD card and run it from there.

Unfortunately, the all-new version of Kodi will be the first that drops support for Windows Vista.

Given that Microsoft no longer supports the operating-system, which debuted in January 2007, this isn’t too much of a surprise.

However, Windows Vista still holds a 0.1 per cent market share of the 1.4 billion people who use Windows across the world.

That equals 1,400,000 users who won’t be able to use the latest version of Kodi to stream their own media collection, or install add-ons on their machine.

That’s a significant number.

But while those who run Windows Vista on their primary computer are unable to update their system to Kodi Leia, they will still be free to run the previous version of the software.

However, they will be unable to use the latest software features and next-generation of Add-Ons without upgrading their machine.

Kodi v18 includes a slew of smaller updates and tweaks to improve speed and stability.

The Kodi team has parsed through the media player, streamlining older code.

Kodi is keeping quiet about when the final update will be available to users to download.

In a blog post about the alpha release, the non-profit adds: “You might also wonder when we will actually release this as a final version?

“Currently we don’t really have a set time however it should at least be somewhere this year so.

“There’s still enough room left for improvements however we could change our minds at any point in time and just call it ready enough to start the release cycle.

“In short we can’t say or promise anything. For now we will start doing the Alpa release on a regular bases to bring further balance to the force.”

If you want to help test the v18 Leia alpha release, Kodi makes it available for free from the download page on their site.

Simply click on the platform of your choice and hit the “pre release” tab.

For Android and Windows users, Kodi has a download add-on which can be found in the repository.

KodiKODI • TVADDONS

Kodi add-on fans have been dealt a blow as the online piracy crackdown continues

add-on fans have been dealt a blow with popular add-on repository TVAddons suffering a big setback.

Last June, TVAddons went offline with its website and Facebook page shut down following a copyright complaint from Canada’s largest telecoms companies.

At a hearing a few weeks later, however, this decision was vacated.

Justice B. Richard Bell ruled evidence gathered in a no-notice home search of Adam Lackman, the man behind TVAddons, was inadmissible.

And with it TVAddons was given a lifeline, with the popular Kodi add-on repository coming back online.

However, this week a judge hearing the case in a court of appeals in Canada has reversed the decision, TorrentFreak reported.

Justice Yves de Montigny said TVAddons was “clearly designed” to be used by “those who want to circumvent the legal means of watching television programmes and the related costs.”

He also drew comparisons between TVAddons and ‘fully loaded’ Kodi boxes.

These devices are set-top boxes, created by third-party sellers in no way associated with Kodi, which have illegal add-ons installed onto it.

Judge de Montigny said: “The service offered by the respondent through the TVAddons website is no different from the service offered through the set-top boxes.

“The means through which access is provided to infringing content is different (one relied on hardware while the other relied on a website), but they both provided unauthorized access to copyrighted material without authorization of the copyright owners.”

The original judge had ruled that less than one per cent of the add-ons provided through TVAddons offered access to illegal content.

But Justice de Montigny disagreed with this assertion.

The judge said: “I agree with the [telecoms companies] that the Judge misapprehended the evidence and made palpable and overriding errors in his assessment of the strength of the appellants’ case.

“Nowhere did the appellants actually state that only a tiny proportion of the add-ons found on the respondent’s website are infringing add-ons. [Justice Bell] therefore clearly misapprehended the evidence in this regard by concluding that just over one percent of the add-ons were purportedly infringing.”

Justice de Montigny concluded by saying that Judge Bell’s findings last June, which gave TVAddons a reprieve, were “fatally flawed”.

TVAddons has since published a statement responding to the court of appeals’ findings.

They highlighted how Justice de Montigny’s findings were pre-trial, and the case made against them by copyright holders has not been tested in front of a jury.

TVAddons said: “We have just received notice that the appeals court ruled in favour of Bell, Videotron, Rogers and TVA.

“This means that we will not have our original domain name or social media accounts returned in the foreseeable future.

“This is a major blow to internet rights in Canada, as it confirms the fact that under Canadian law there are no safe harbours protecting community based platforms from abuse by web site visitors.

TVAddonsTVADDONS

TVAddons is one of the most popular Kodi repositories around

“As of the current time, the court has not had the chance to actually test any of the claims that were brought forward by Canada’s telecom cartel.

“The court took their claims as at face value, and decided that it was appropriate to preemptively seize all of our property pending the outcome of what could end up being a very lengthy and costly legal battle, which we might not even be able to afford to fight.

“We don’t even have the ability to communicate with our former userbase, since all of our social media accounts, which contained nothing infringing whatsoever, were seized as well and will not be returned anytime soon. That is nothing less than censorship!

“This decision severely threatens innovation in Canada. Disruptive technologies have always been a thorn in the side of the status-quo, who will generally stop at nothing to destroy their competition. Since the actual evidence has not been tested by the courts, they have essentially said that a claim alone is enough to shut an entire business down.”

The news comes as the Kodi surge continues without any sign of stopping, as users continue to ditch paid TV services for the online player.

And it’s these illegal add-ons that are being targeted by ISPs, government agencies, broadcasters and rights holders.

Kodi Box BLOW – Add-on BAN ordered by courts in major illegal streaming crackdown https://briefnews.eu/kodi-box-blow-add-on-ban-ordered-by-courts-in-major-illegal-streaming-crackdown/ https://briefnews.eu/kodi-box-blow-add-on-ban-ordered-by-courts-in-major-illegal-streaming-crackdown/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2018 12:48:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kodi-box-blow-add-on-ban-ordered-by-courts-in-major-illegal-streaming-crackdown/

add-on fans could have seen a huge piracy precedent set, with a judge recently siding with major Hollywood players Netflix and Amazon in court.

The Kodi surge continues without any sign of stopping, as users continue to ditch paid TV services for the online player.

And now one Kodi Box distributor has been dealt a heavy blow in a court case set in motion by major Hollywood players.

TickBox TV is a popular streaming set-top box, powered by the Kodi media player.

According to Hollywood studios, the Georgia-based company includes instructions for a number of Kodi add-ons that enable users to stream paid-for content for free.

Much of this paid-for content is generated by the likes of Disney, 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros, Amazon, Netflix – which are all part of the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment.

The ACE last year filed a lawsuit against TickBox, claiming these set-top boxes are nothing more than piracy tools, allowing buyers to stream copyright-infringing content.

And now a US judge has ordered TickBox to keep add-ons out of their set top boxes in a huge victory for Netflix Amazon and co.

In their preliminary injunction this week, US District Court Judge Michael Fitzgerald largely sided with movie companies, TorrentFreak reported.

The ACE had claimed TickBox promoted its service for piracy purposes, and Fitzergerald said there was enough evidence to make this likely.

As such, the judge said there is sufficient reason to believe TickBox can be held liable for inducing copyright infringement.

TickBox had said they had simply offered a computer that users can configure the way they want to.

But the US judge said TickBox went further, as it directed users to install certain ‘themes’.

These themes feature several add-ons that link to infringing content.

In their findings, judge Fitzergerald wrote: “Thus, the fact that the Device is just a ‘computer’ that can be used for infringing and noninfringing purposes does not insulate TickBox from liability if [..] the Device is actually used for infringing purposes and TickBox encourages such use.”

The preliminary injunction compels TickBox to ensure set-top boxes should no longer have links to themes or add-ons that the ACE has flagged up as copyright infringing.

TickBox said their business could be shutdown by a broad injunction, but the court argued against this as customers can still use the devices for legitimate purposes.

The court added if customers are no longer interested then it suggests piracy was the main draw of the devices.

The preliminary injunction is not final, and it remains to be seen how TickBox can remove add-ons from devices that already have been sold.

The Court has told both TickBox and the ACE to reach an agreement on outstanding issues which can be included in an updated injunction.

The ACE has also filed a similar lawsuit against Dragon Box, a set-top box that makes use of Kodi add-ons.

The complaint alleges Dragon Box advertised the product as a way for users to avoid paying for authorised subscription services.

It quotes marketing material that encourages users to “Get rid of your premium channels … [and] Stop paying for Netflix and Hulu.”

The set top box costs around £255 and is in over a quarter million homes in the US.

Kodi add-on repository TVAddOns has vowed to change streaming ‘forever’

TVAddons has unveiled the first part of its ambitious new plans to “change how people access streaming media forever”.

The hugely-popular add-on repository has revealed a new GitHub Browser.

According to TVAddons, this makes it possible for users to install any Kodi add-on directly from the developer’s own GitHub repository.

In practice, this will make TVAddons “more resilient and decentralised”.

The add-on repository says its latest innovation brings about a “new age in addon development”.

Users can download and install add-ons directly from developers via GitHub Browser TVADDONS

Announcing the news, TVAddons wrote, “Behind us are the days where you were restricted to Kodi addons made available through our Fusion Installer or clones.

“Not only does the GitHub Browser give users more choice, it empowers independent developers. Now developers can more easily distribute their addons to the masses.

“Aligning themselves with a particular group or community to facilitate addon distribution will no longer be necessary.”

TVAddons says the latest announcement is just the first phase of a slew of new improvements it has planned for 2018.

“This is just the beginning, there are many big things to come.

“Thank you for being a part of our communithy,” it concludes in its official blog post. (sic)

Earlier this month, the hugely-successful this year.

TVAddons, one of the most popular online destinations for third-party apps – dubbed add-ons – for Kodi, made the pledge on its homepage on January 4th 2018.

For those who don’t know, Kodi is a neutral, open-source media player that can be installed on a broad range of devices – from discount set-top boxes powered by Android, to known brands, like Amazon Fire TV Stick.

Add-ons can be built by third-party developers to enable a number of additional features, including the ability to stream premium content, like paid-for sports and movie channels, for free without permission from the rightsholders.

TVAddons is one of the largest repositories for Kodi add-ons online.

The website sees 19 million monthly active users.

TVAddons was shut down back in June 2017, following the seizure of its domain and social media accounts.

The add-on repository resurfaced later in the year, and quickly regained popularity.

TVAddons recently celebrated its sixth anniversary. It used the opportunity to tease its plans for the future.

In a statement posted on its website, TVAddons said: “We have grand plans moving forward.

“We’re almost ready to introduce a new generation of Kodi addons that will change the way people access streaming media forever!

“Expect the release of these addons in the coming weeks, along with our return to a standard addon submission policy which will once again foster innovation while remaining 100 percent DMCA compliant.”

The announcement follows a tumultuous time for Kodi.

Earlier this year, research from FACT revealed that there are now one million Kodi Boxes in use across the UK.

The FACT research was conducted in association with the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit, Intellectual Property Office, Police Scotland, and anti-piracy outfit Entura International.

It estimated that up to 25 per cent of the online viewing public access content illegally online.

We’re almost ready to introduce a new generation of Kodi addons that will change the way people access streaming media forever!

According to the FACT report, the UK is one of the countries most affected by the increasing demand for Kodi boxes.

Those supplying the Kodi Boxes range from individuals building boxes for a select few friends and family, to sprawling organised crime networks.

There has been a steady stream of reports of individuals who have been arrested for selling these devices, however, FACT claims these are just the “tip of the iceberg”.

According to FACT, there are a number of large-scale operations currently in the early stages.

However, the organisation is unable to specify any other details at the moment. The crackdown on so-called Kodi Boxes in the UK is likely to carry severe penalties.

Back in April, the EU Court of Justice judgement in the Filmspeler case included confirmation that streaming by end users on illicit set-top boxes, like those powered by Kodi, constitutes an infringement of copyright.

The Digital Economy Act, which came into effect in October 2017, extends criminal penalties for online copyright infringement to match those of physical copyright infringement.

That means the maximum prison sentence that can be awarded in online copyright infringement cases has increased from two years to 10 years.

This change could result in longer custodial sentences for the criminals involved in distributing illicit streaming devices.

Kodi debuted an official client for .

The launch saw Kodi – which started out as XBMC, or Xbox Media Centre, since that was the only hardware it was designed to run on back in 2002 – come full circle.

For those who don’t know, is a neutral, open-source media player that can play local media files, as well as those stored online. It can also stream content from networked drives.

Apps – known as add-ons – can be built by third-party developers to unlock a swathe of new functionality for the barebones media player.

The Kodi app on Xbox One does not boast all the features on its desktop counterpart – for example, users cannot access an attached storage drive via the Kodi media player.

Kodi on Xbox One also has no access to the Blu-ray drive to start the disc.

Elsewhere, Kodi warned users that it “may contain missing features and bugs”.

The open-source player has pledged to regularly update its Xbox One client with bug fixes, patches and new features.

Impatient Kodi fans can sign-up for beta releases of the new software – guaranteeing they’re always first to get their hands on new features.

If you want to sign-up, simply head over to Kodi’s Google Forms page and input the email address associated with your Microsoft or Xbox account.

Kodi will let you know when the latest software is available for your Xbox One.

, “Your account e-mail address will only be used to add you to the recipient list of these pre-alpha Xbox versions.”

According to Kodi, it has taken more than a year to bring the hugely-popular media player onto the Xbox.

The company shared, “In December 2016 (yes you read that right) the initial reconnaissance was done on what it would take to get it done and it seemed plausible.

“Initial work that needed to be done was to convert most if not all external code libraries Kodi relies on and get these changes accepted by the original maintaining developer group(s).

“Once that work was started the current Windows specific code was picked apart piece by piece and slowly converted to be with the UWP specs.”

Kodi is available to download from the Microsoft Store now.

Streaming on social media has been thrown into the limelight following Kodi blocks

Are social media services becoming the new bastion of free online streams?

Earlier this week, after his account was linked to an illegal stream on Facebook.

The feverishly-anticipated fight between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko back in April 2017 was available exclusively on Sky Sports Box Office for £19.95.

However, .

The stream, which was viewed by some 4,250 people at its peak, was traced back to the Sky account holder, Craig Foster, of Scarborough.

The Joshua vs Klitschko stream follows a similar case in the USA, which saw a 21-year-old man arrested by federal agents for posting a full version of Deadpool on his Facebook page while the 20th Century Fox movie was still in theatres.

More than five million people streamed the pirated copy, according to US officials.

In the United States, the offence – reproducing and distributing a copyrighted a copyrighted work – is a felony and carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison.

Following the recent clampdown on free streaming via so-called Kodi Boxes and torrents websites, like KickAss Torrents and The Pirate Baby, it’s possible pirates will increasingly turn to social media.

Media companies are prepared for this eventually, and already have a variety of techniques to track and block pirates across social media sites, like Facebook.

Broadcasters and content creators, like Sky and 20th Century Fox, can use advanced watermarking techniques to pinpoint who is responsible for the illegal stream.

If you’re found to be the source of an illegal stream, they will do everything in their power to halt the illegal broadcast.

For example, your account could instantly be blocked – stopping you from watching or streaming any content.

Broadcasters are acutely aware of when they need to be on the offensive, with live sporting events, like the Joshua vs Klitschko boxing match, preferred by online pirates.

It’s worth adding that whether you’re watching on a Kodi Box, within your desktop web browser, a mobile app, or your Facebook News Feed – you’re breaking all the same laws.

Streaming copyrighted content for free without the permission of the rights holders is illegal.

Back in April 2017, the EU Court of Justice judgement in the Filmspeler case included confirmation that streaming by end users on hardware, like illicit set-top boxes powered by Kodi, constitutes an infringement of copyright.

The new Digital Economy Act, which came into effect in the UK in October 2017, has extended criminal penalties for online copyright infringement to match those of physical copyright infringement – maximum sentences will increase from two years to 10 years.

These changes could now result in longer prison sentences for the those involved in online piracy, as well as distributing illicit streaming devices.

Those who download or stream copyrighted content using a torrent site might find themselves the recipient of a warning letter from their broadband provider.

Dubbed Get It Right, the anti-piracy sees UK ISPs mail-out warnings to subscribers whose accounts have been used to download copyrighted material.

The email cautions subscribers they have 20 days to stop downloading copyrighted material using peer-to-peer websites.

Should your Internet service provider detect more illegal activity from your IP address during the 20 day grace period – another educational email from the Get It Right campaign will be sent.

A similar campaign in the United States only offers torrent site users seven-days to comply.

According to the campaign website, “The Get it Right Educational Email programme is designed to educate consumers about what’s happening on their Internet Service Provider (ISP) account.

“The programme is to help to make sure they, or people that use their connection, are not infringing copyright and to direct them to sources where they get the content they want from genuine sites and services.”

Sky, BT, NowTV, PlusNet, Talk-Talk and Virgin Media have all signed-up to the Get It Right campaign.
