EYESIGHT can be compromised through actions that seem benign. Millions of Britons are knocking back a drink that can “permanently” affect vision, warned Shafiq Rehman, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Optegra Eye Hospital Manchester and Yorkshire.

In the latest TV ratings, CBS’ Monday coverage of two NCAA men’s basketball tourney matchups averaged 5 million total viewers and a 1.2 rating, easily leading the night in the demo.
CBS’ coverage peaked in the 8 o’clock hour, with 6.2 mil and a 1.5.
Opposite hoops….
NBC | The Voice (5.9 mil/0.8, read recap) slipped 26 percent week-to-week to what appears to be franchise lows, yet drew a larger audience than March Madness (at least per fast nationals). Debris (2.8 mil/0.4) dipped to a new audience low while steady in the demo for a second straight week.
ABC | American Idol‘s Monday debut (4.8 mil/0.7, read recap) was down from this season’s Sunday averages (6.1 mil/0.9), to what appears to be franchise lows. The Good Doctor (4.2 mil/0.5) dipped a tenth to a new demo low.
FOX | America’s Most Wanted (2 mil/0.4) matched its revival premiere.
THE CW | Bulletproof (529K/0.1) was steady.
The Live+Same Day numbers reported in our ratings column do not reflect a show’s overall performance, given the increased use of delayed playback via DVR and streaming platforms, plus out-of-home viewing. These numbers (Nielsen fast nationals, unless denoted as finals) instead aim to simply illustrate trends or superlatives. Warning: Contents may be hot!

A video of a police officer knocking politely on the door of Number 10 to let in Downing Street’s Chief Mouser has charmed Twitter, rocketing to viral status in just minutes.
The moment was captured in a TV cross to Downing Street, aired by Sky News. Over the shoulder of the TV reporter, Number 10’s cat – best known as Larry the Cat, who has a 199,000-strong fan base on Twitter – can be seen waiting patiently at the door of Prime Minister Theresa May’s residence.
Larry, apparently finished with mouse-catching for the day, is let in when a kindly policeman knocks on the door to permit the Cabinet Office’s kitty inside… We’ll bet that the federal feline was happy as Larry with that result.
The tweet soon amassed thousands of retweets and even more likes on Twitter, with even Larry the Cat coming across it himself… and he wasn’t impressed.
The Cabinet Office’s chief mouser was quick to join in the fun, sharing a clip put together by the BBC of the kitty knock knock.
It seems those watching enjoyed the over-the-shoulder exchange, with one viewer commenting that they were “distracted by the cat for the entire segment,” with another comparing the incident to ‘Rees-Moggy’ and the UK’s Brexit negotiations.
Brexit cat! It thought it wanted to be out, but on actually experiencing out it decided it very much wanted to be in.

It’s not the first time Larry the Cat has found himself in the spotlight. He frequently tweets about the political news of the day – or winds up making the headlines thanks to his long-lasting feud with Palmerston, the Foreign Office cat.
The two have had an icy relationship since the neighbouring feline’s appointment two years ago. In July 2016, Palmerston and Larry were caught on camera in a stand-off at Downing Street. Two weeks later, Palmerston was caught sneaking into Number 10, but was later evicted by police. Later that year Larry suffered an injured paw after a particularly violent showdown with Palmerston.
More recently, the two ferocious felines were caught having a serious cat-fight. Palmerston suffered an injury to his ear and Larry lost his collar in the scrap – when will the bloodbath end?

Russia knocked the socks off millions around the globe with their performances at the World Cup this summer, so it’s perhaps fitting that midfielder Roman Zobnin will provide exactly that item of kit to the FIFA Museum.
Zobnin played every single minute of Russia’s wondrously unexpected run to the quarter-finals in their home tournament, where they wowed the nation and the world – most notably in humbling Spain at the last 16 stage.
While Russia ultimately came underdone in a gut-wrenching penalty shootout defeat to Croatia in the quarter-finals, the socks that midfielder Zobnin wore in that game have the privilege of being the first item in a special World Cup showcase at the FIFA Museum in Zurich.
The museum tweeted a picture of the item of clothing, styled in the white-blue-red of the Russian flag, along with a message of thanks to their former owner.
Thanks for having us Russia, and thanks for providing the history for the first object of our 2018 #WorldCup showcase 😍

Spartak Moscow midfielder Zobnin, 24, is one of Russian football’s brightest stars and has made 21 appearances and counting in ‘Sbornaya’ colors.
Zobinin is seen as key to the team’s progress moving forward, alongside youngsters such as 22-year-old Aleksandr Golovin of Monaco.
Zobin will however miss Tuesday night’s crunch UEFA Nations League clash against Sweden with a thigh strain.
Russia sit top of Group B2 on seven points from three games, meaning a draw at the Friends Arena in Stockholm would be enough to see Stanislav Cherchesov’s men promoted to the top tier of the new UEFA competition.

The padded room already has precipitation on the walls, and we’ve barely even started yet. “Butts up!” barks Rob Waltko, a former Pennsylvania state champion wrestler at North Allegheny High School, commanding preteen wrestlers on their mats to arch their backs. The North Allegheny Junior Tigers, mostly fifth and sixth graders, push and extend until the tops of their heads touch the mat in what resembles a chakrasana yoga pose. They’re still learning the sport — starting with basic exercises like the back bridge. “A strong neck and core are huge,” Waltko says. “There’s a lot of wear and tear [in wrestling], so you need that strength to stay mobile and flexible.”
Increased mobility and flexibility are not the only reasons for a swelling interest in neck strength. As concerns over chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) spread to all levels of sport, coaches, trainers, athletes and businessmen have zeroed in on the neck as a way to prevent head injuries. Once widely believed to be a football and boxing problem, concussions and CTE are now properly perceived as threats in many sports.
When your head moves during a collision, your brain gets jarred around the skull. A stronger neck can help stabilize the head.
Dr. Mark Kemenosh, lead chiropractor, Glen Oaks Health and Spine Center
In the NCAA, wrestling, football and ice hockey have the three highest self-reported concussion rates for men, while ice hockey, field hockey and soccer top the list for women. Developments in hardware, especially cushioned football helmets, have been widely touted, and now the next wave of prevention includes companies like the Iron Neck and Q30 Innovations, which focus on stabilizing the neck to stave off brain injury. But can even the most successful neck stabilizers meaningfully negate the effects of brutality in combat sports?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that each year 3.8 million sports-related concussions occur in the United States. According to Dr. Mark Kemenosh, lead chiropractor at Glen Oaks Health and Spine Center in New Jersey, the neck plays a pivotal role in limiting the damage. “When your head moves during a collision, your brain gets jarred around the skull,” Kemenosh tells OZY. “This can cause injuries to the neck muscles, the top couple vertebrae and the connective tissue between the brain and the skull, leading to long-term damage. A stronger neck can help stabilize the head.”
Mike Jolly, a former UCLA football player, contends that strength built through conventional exercises does not provide critical protection during collisions. So he invented the Iron Neck, which relies on a rig called the Halo to apply “horizontal resistance while you rotate the neck,” Jolly says. “This demands that the neck use all four kinds of contractions.”
The Halo functions as an attachment to any rotary cable weight machine — for example, a tricep push-down extension — and looks as though a 45-pound iron cast plate has become the hottest new headwear. An inner bladder can be inflated with a pump to create a snug fit around the user’s head. The athlete simply rotates his head and neck, following Jolly’s regimen. The rotational resistance and natural range of motion trains the neck’s muscles to fire appropriately during actual collisions. Today, 15 NFL teams and 24 collegiate programs utilize the Iron Neck in training.
“Compared to other sports, there’s nowhere to hide in wrestling,” says Brantley Hooks, a four-year starter at Bucknell University and now assistant coach at Fort Dorcester High School in North Charleston, South Carolina. “It’s devastatingly obvious when a guy wrestles concussed.” That may be one reason for wrestling’s relatively high rate of self-reported concussions. But it doesn’t explain why, in a sport where neck strength is pivotal, head injuries remain frequent.
The reluctant conclusion: Ridding contact sports of all head injuries requires much more than strength training. Former NFL quarterback Danny Kanell fears that this might mean fundamentally changing contact sports. “There is a huge concern for the future of football at the youth level,” Kanell tells OZY. “If you don’t have kids playing at a young age, the sport is going to die. I don’t think it’s crazy to think that in 20 or 30 years, we’ll be looking at a product that’s not the NFL.”
Another company using preventive technology to improve the state of play is Q30 Innovations. While some companies focus on collision-absorbent helmets, Q30 aims to protect the brain from inside the skull. The Connecticut-based company has produced the Q-Collar — a New Age neck roll that takes a radical approach to brain protection. By lightly clamping down on the athlete’s jugular veins, the Q-Collar causes the brain to swell, fitting more tightly within the skull. In March, the Q-Collar won Q30 the 2017 Alpha Award for Best Analytics Innovation/Technology at MIT’s Sloan Sports Analytics Conference.

It’s quite likely that the attempts to address the epidemic in sports concussions all stare down an unsolvable problem. Neck bridges and Q-Collars can’t stop the trauma of getting launched headfirst onto a thinly cushioned mat — all in the name of a two-point score. But the combination of research, education, innovative tech and old-school strength training might ease the pain. “Teaching coaches and trainers [to identify trauma] is huge, but the athletes themselves need to know the signs,” Hooks says. “We didn’t really talk much about that when I was wrestling.”
Competitive athletes will always try to push beyond injury. As Hooks says, “twisted knees and bad shoulders are a dime a dozen in the weigh-in line.” The key, then, is keeping that mindset below the neck.

Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, from the conservative Les Republicans party, was hospitalized following a brief faceoff with a man, identified by police as Vincent Debraize, the mayor of Champignolles, a commune of several dozen residents in Eure department in northern France.
Debraize was detained Saturday morning in Paris on charges of committing “intentional violence against a person conducting public services,” according to Kosciusko-Morizet’s lawyer Xavier Autain, as cited by AFP.
Autain said he expects “a fitting response from the judiciary” for “a serious attack on an elected member of the Republicans.”
Debraize, reportedly, did not intend to cover his tracks and told his staff in Champignolles the day preceding his arrest that he was travelling back to Paris on police summons.
Police said they managed to identify Debraize as the prime suspect “after witness testimony and thanks to video surveillance.”
Debraize did not seem to bother concealing his identity when he approached the politician, commonly referred by her initials, NKM, as she was promoting her candidacy handing out leaflets at a market on Thursday. In plain view of dozens of witnesses, Debraize reportedly yelled, “Stupid bobo” – short for “bourgeois-bohème” – at the woman, then wrested out leaflets and thrust them in her face.
Amidst the altercation, Kosciusko-Morizet lost consciousness, collapsing on the ground, and was rushed to the hospital with a “mild head injury.” She was discharged the following day.
After coming in voluntarily for questioning, Debraize is insisting on his innocence and has pleaded not guilty to the charges of a verbal or physical assault. Kosciusko-Morizet reportedly recognized her assailant on Saturday during a face-to-face meeting, Autain said.
“He [Debraize] is a gentleman who obviously seeks advertising, who is violent and is not very courageous, he does not recognize the facts and has fled as soon as completed his act and he obviously lives very well,” Autain told BMF TV on Saturday.
With no information on the attacker’s motive yet available from the authorities, Le Parisien reported that the mayor was one of 33 elected officials who openly backed Henri Guaino, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s aide, and a candidate in the recent presidential elections. Guaino emerged as a rival to Kosciusko-Morizet in the parliamentary elections, but did not score enough votes to go forward to a second round scheduled for Sunday. Kosciusko-Morizet was more successful, gaining 18.1 percent of the vote in the first round. However, she is projected to lose on Sunday to Gilles Le Gendre, a candidate from French President Macron’s centrist En Marche party, who secured 41.8 percent in the first round of voting.
Speaking after the first round, Kosciusko-Morizet lashed out at Guaino, calling her defeated rival “the useful idiot of Gilles Le Gendre,” during a debate with the latter on Wednesday, broadcast by BFM TV.
For his part, Guaino was quick to dismiss any collision with Debraize, saying that he does not consider himself being “directly or indirectly” responsible for the incident in a comment to French magazine L’Obs.
“I do not know him [Vincent Debraize], I just [came across] him during the parliamentary campaign,” Guaino told the outlet, adding that he would not let anybody exploit the incident to tarnish his reputation.
“Anyone who says the opposite will have to answer for his words in court,” he said.

Meanwhile, the residents of Champignolles are in disbelief that their mayor was capable of such a blatant act of violence.
“I’ve never known him being aggressive, he’s pretty good at running the community, he is more like someone who defends people around him,” Jean-François, a local resident, told BMF TV.

The future is going to be full of robots, which might be exciting or depressing depending on your viewpoint. The future is also going to be full of drunk people tackling said robots for fun, which is going to be very funny right up until the point corporations pass robot hate crime laws in order to protect their property. Then it’ll be depressing.
But hey, while we’re still at the funny stage, why not enjoy the news that last week in Mountain View, a drunk man was arrested after knocking over a 300-pound security robot, the Knightscope K5. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because a different Knightscope K5 was previously in the news for running over a toddler’s foot. So, maybe this is just payback? Robo-human wars have to star somewhere I guess.
According to ABC7 News, the perp, 41-year-old Jason Sylvain, approached the K5 while it was patrolling a parking lot. He toppled it over (out of spite or curiosity? We don’t know), inflicting a number of scratches on the bot. The K5 is now back on patrol, while Sylvain has been arrested for “prowling and public intoxication.”

Reaction to the incidents seems mixed. One local resident told ABC7 News: “It’s a funny situation.” While another said “[it’s] a pretty pathetic incident because it shows how spineless the drunk guys in Silicon Valley really are because they attack a victim who doesn’t even have any arms.” Which also means “it’s a funny situation.”
Drunken japes aside, it’ll be interesting to see how companies deal with this sort of incident in future. If people are going to damage robots, how should they program those bots to react? Do we need new laws, or will people just slowly acclimatize to the technology, like they always do?
Some context: in one experiment in Japan, a robot was let loose to wander in a busy shopping mall, asking humans who blocked its path to move out the way. The researchers found that adults were happy to step aside, but children were less accommodating. When no-one was looking they obstructed the robot; kicking it, punching it, and calling it names. Finding no easy way to stop this behavior, the roboticists programmed the bot to simply avoid any human shorter than 1.4-meters. Drunks and children, it seems, simply can’t be trusted around robots.
