Lindsey Vonn has only two races remaining on her aching knees.

The women's all-time leader in World Cup wins announced Friday that she will retire from ski racing after this month's world championships in Sweden.

The 34-year-old Vonn had been planning to retire in December but changed her plans because of persistent pain in both of her knees, which she fully realized after failing to finish a race in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, last month

"It's been an emotional 2 weeks making the hardest decision of my life, but I have accepted that I cannot continue ski racing," Vonn wrote on Instagram . "I will compete at the World Championships in Downhill and SG (super-G) next week in Are, Sweden and they will be the final races of my career."

The worlds open with the women's super-G on Tuesday in the Swedish resort of Are. The women's downhill is scheduled for Feb. 10.

"You have consistently raised the bar, you have created a legacy that will live forever, and you have given us all some of the greatest memories in our sport," Tiger Shaw, the president and CEO of U.S. Ski and Snowboard, wrote on Twitter.

Vonn's right knee is permanently damaged from previous crashes. The American has also torn ACLs, suffered fractures near her left knee, broken her ankle, sliced her right thumb, had a concussion and more. She's limited now to about three runs per day, and her aching body can't handle the workload of other skiers.

"My body is broken beyond repair and it isn't letting me have the final season I dreamed of," Vonn said. "My body is screaming at me to STOP and it's time for me to listen."

However, with 82 World Cup wins, Vonn will not be able to match the overall record of 86 held by Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark.

"Honestly, retiring isn't what upsets me. Retiring without reaching my goal is what will stay with me forever," Vonn said. "However, I can look back at 82 World Cup wins, 20 World Cup titles, 3 Olympic medals, 7 World Championship medals and say that I have accomplished something that no other woman in HISTORY has ever done, and that is something that I will be proud of FOREVER!"

In her announcement, Vonn also made public for the first time that she had yet another surgery on her right knee following last season.

"A large portion of cartilage that had delaminated from my bone was removed," Vonn said, without specifying which bone. "My crash in Lake Louise last year was much more painful than I let on, but I continued to race because I wanted to win a medal in the Olympics for my late grandfather."

Vonn achieved that goal by winning a bronze medal in downhill at last year's Pyeongchang Games.

But then she crashed again during training in Copper Mountain, Colorado, in November, and tore the lateral collateral ligament and sustained three fractures in her left knee.

"Despite extensive therapy, training and a knee brace, I am not able make the turns necessary to compete the way I know I can," Vonn said.

Retiring in Sweden brings Vonn full circle.

She won the first two major championship medals of her career — two silvers — at the 2007 worlds in Are. Vonn has also won seven World Cup races at the Swedish resort, including two giant slaloms, and has 12 podiums overall there.

At last season's World Cup finals in Are, Vonn won the downhill and finished third in the super-G.

So broken knees and all, nobody will be counting Vonn out as a contender in her final races.

"Can't wait to see some of you in the finish in Are," she said, "where I will give it my all one last time."

Lately, Giuliani has become an avid foreign policy commentator despite not being authorized by the US president, and his long-time friend, Donald Trump to speak on foreign matters. The former New York City mayor, who was hired by Trump in April to deal exclusively with the Mueller probe, raised eyebrows last month when he implied that the US president was keen on fomenting regime change in Iran. Although the State Department promptly disowned Giuliani’s comments, reports have emerged that Trump is growing increasingly frustrated with Giuliani for getting him bad press.

However, on Wednesday, the lawyer was at it again, telling a business conference in Tel Aviv that Trump has a head start in the much-anticipated meeting with Kim, as it was allegedly the North Korean leader who had to do the begging to get the meeting back on the table.

“Well, Kim Jong-un got back on his hands and knees and begged for it, which is exactly the position you want to put him in,” Giuliani said, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. Considering how Vice President Mike Pence’s remark about a “Libyan scenario” enraged Pyongyang last week, there is a reason to watch out for what comes from Giuliani’s undiplomatic outburst for the future of the Singapore meeting.

The remark has seen Twitter exploding with a predictable barrage of criticism towards Giuliani, with many fearing that his reckless rhetoric could jeopardize the Singapore summit, which was already cancelled once.

Some suggested Giuliani hammered the final nail in the coffin, arguing that there’s no way Kim will not take offense.

“I’d be surprised if the NK summit still happens after Giuliani said Kim Jong Un got on his knees and begged,” one Twitter user wrote.

Others pointed out that Giuliani’s frequent interventions in matters that he has no expertise in, or is not eligible to speak on, might be a sign of his growing appetite for a senior post at the White House, which Trump is unwilling or unable to provide.

Giuliani himself has shown no remorse for risking Trump’s major diplomacy achievement.

He said he does not expect his words to hurt the North Korean leadership so much that they walk out from the summit. “The only ones sensitive about this are the media,” he said in a telephone interview with AP, stressing that his words were “a metaphor” and they have “nothing to do with the administration.”

  • Bloomberg on Thursday published a detailed report of Travis Kalanick’s final months as Uber CEO and subsequent ouster.
  • The story describes Kalanick as combative and stubborn, lobbying behind the scenes and attempting to maintain control of Uber.
  • Kalanick even offered Uber stock to a driver he was caught yelling at on camera, according to the report, and when Uber’s lawyers pushed back on that idea, he offered to pay the driver $ 200,000 of his own money.
  • Bloomberg reports that by the time Kalanick was forced out of the CEO role, his judgment had “deteriorated.”

More than six months after former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick was ousted from the company, new details have come to light about how it all went down.

Bloomberg on Thursday published a detailed report of Kalanick’s fall from grace, a series of events described as “weirder and darker” than anyone imagined. The piece details the final months of Kalanick’s regime, which included secretive lobbying and contentious meetings.

Perhaps the most telling detail from the report was Kalanick’s reaction to being caught on camera yelling at an Uber driver. Last February, dashcam footage was released of Kalanick debating a driver over falling fares. In the video — recorded by the driver, Fawzi Kamel — Kalanick becomes combative, yelling expletives at Kamel.

According to Bloomberg, Kalanick was at Uber’s headquarters meeting with other top executives when the video was published. Here’s how Bloomberg described Kalanick’s reaction:

“As the clip ended, the three stood in stunned silence. Kalanick seemed to understand that his behavior required some form of contrition. According to a person who was there, he literally got down on his hands and knees and began squirming on the floor. ‘This is bad,’ he muttered. ‘I’m terrible.'”

Months later, Kalanick scheduled a meeting with Kamel to set things right. According to Bloomberg, a meeting that was supposed to be quick and include an apology from Kalanick quickly became contentious and lasted for more than an hour as Kalanick re-engaged in the previous debate over pricing strategies.

By the end, Kalanick even reportedly offered Kamel Uber stock, a suggestion that was quickly nixed by Uber’s lawyers. According to Bloomberg, Kalanick then agreed to pay Kamel $ 200,000 of his own money.

Bloomberg has plenty more details about Kalanick’s final months at Uber, so head over there for more.

  • North Korea has been under sanctions for years, but the UN has reportedly drafted a new wave of sanctions that could really hurt Pyongyang.
  • The UN wants to cut back 90 percent of petroleum to North Korea, cap crude oil shipments, and get all North Korean workers abroad back home.
  • If Russia and China ok the move, it just might push North Korea to the negotiating table.

SEOUL (Reuters) – Newly proposed sanctions on North Korea could have a significant effect on the isolated country’s already struggling economy, analysts said ahead of an expected U.N. Security Council vote on Friday, which will hinge on support from China and Russia.

Tensions have been rising over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, which it pursues in defiance of years of different U.N. Security Council resolutions, with bellicose rhetoric from the North and the White House.

But U.S. diplomats have made clear they are seeking a diplomatic solution and have proposed a number of new, tougher sanctions designed to ratchet up pressure on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korea regularly threatens to destroy South Korea, the United States and Japan and says its weapons programs are necessary to counter U.S. aggression. The United States stations 28,500 troops in the South, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War.

On Friday, a spokesperson for North Korea’s foreign ministry called U.S. President Donald Trump’s recently released national security strategy the latest American policy seeking to “stifle our country and turn the entire Korean peninsula” into an outpost of American hegemony.

He said Trump was seeking “total subordination of the whole world”.

Increasing pressure

The draft U.N. resolution, seen by Reuters on Thursday, seeks to ban nearly 90 percent of refined petroleum product exports to North Korea by capping them at 500,000 barrels a year and demand the repatriation of North Koreans working abroad within 12 months.

It would also cap crude oil supplies to North Korea at 4 million barrels a year, as well as ban a number of North Korean exports such as machinery, lumber, and other products and resources.

“If they were enforced, the cap on oil would be devastating for North Korea’s haulage industry, for North Koreans who use generators at home or for productive activities, and for (state-owned enterprises) that do the same,” said Peter Ward, a columnist for NK News, a website that tracks North Korea.

The forced repatriation of foreign workers would also cut off vital sources of foreign currency and investment not only for the government but also for North Korea’s emerging market economy, he said.

“If such sanctions were enforced, they would thus impede and endanger North Korea’s economic development.”

Asked about the effects of sanctions before these latest proposals were announced, Michael Kirby, who led a U.N. inquiry into human rights abuses in North Korea, said cutting off fuel imports would be “a very serious step”.

“Cutting off oil, petroleum supplies would obviously have a very big impact on the ordinary population,” he said.

Eyes on China, Russia

putin xiKim Kyung-Hoon/Reuters

China, which supplies most of North Korea’s oil, has backed successive rounds of U.N. sanctions but has resisted past U.S. calls to cut off supplies to its neighbor.

Asked about the proposed new resolution on North Korea, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying called on all sides to exercise restraint and to “strictly implement the current relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions”.

While not directly addressing the new proposals, Hua said that China would maintain communications with all sides and supports measures to “quickly create the necessary conditions to peacefully resolve the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue through talks”.

Any move to curb exports of Chinese fuel to North Korea may have limited impact after China National Petroleum Corp suspended diesel and gasoline sales to its northern neighbor in June over concerns the state-owned company would not get paid.

Business has slowed steadily since then, with zero shipments of diesel, gasoline and other fuel from China in October. November data will be released on Monday.

Russia quietly boosted economic support for North Korea earlier this year, and last week Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov said that Moscow was not ready to sign up to new sanctions that would strangle the country economically.

China and Russia on Thursday asked for more time to consider a U.S. proposal to blacklist 10 ships for transporting banned items from North Korea, diplomats said. It was unclear how much more time would be given.

Even if the proposed sanctions have an economic effect, it’s not clear whether that would push Pyongyang to negotiate or stop its weapons development, said Kim Sung-han, a former South Korean vice foreign minister.

“We have had numerous – sometimes so-called toughest – sanctions against North Korea over the past 25 years,” he said. “Almost none have worked effectively to halt the regime’s military and nuclear ambitions.”

Olympic dreams

The additional sanctions would come as South Korean President Moon Jae-in seeks to ease tensions ahead of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in February. He has proposed delaying annual joint military drills with the United States, which North Korea sees as a preparation for invasion, until after the Games.

A foreign ministry spokesperson declined to comment until after the Security Council vote on the resolution on Friday, but an official at South Korea’s Unification Ministry said Seoul supported global efforts to rein in North Korea even as it tries to use the Olympics as a catalyst for peace negotiations.

“The North should have its own thinking about whether or not to participate in the Olympics (regardless of sanctions),” the Unification Ministry official told Reuters. “If it were to come, it would make a decision at the last minute. Until then we will continue to wait and see.”

Seoul has also sought to repair relations with China, which were damaged when Beijing complained over the deployment of an American anti-missile system in South Korea.

Officials at foreign ministries in both Seoul and Beijing have denied reports by travel agents that some Chinese tour groups are still begin blocked from traveling to South Korea.

“As far as I am aware, according to the information I have before me, these reports are not in accord with the facts,” Hua said on Friday.

While Trump and North Korean leader Kim have publicly derided negotiations as useless without major policy shifts by the other side, Seoul has continued a slightly softer approach, while still supporting international pressure.

“If we get to meet the North side, we are willing to have frank, active discussions on various issues that are of North Korea’s interest, without any preconditions,” South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon told reporters in Seoul.

“Next year, we would pursue our policy in a more proactive manner than this year, making use of various opportunities, including the Pyeongchang Olympics.”

‘Preacher’ Review: ‘On Your Knees’ Offers an Explosive Penultimate Episode https://briefnews.eu/preacher-review-on-your-knees-offers-an-explosive-penultimate-episode/ https://briefnews.eu/preacher-review-on-your-knees-offers-an-explosive-penultimate-episode/#respond Tue, 05 Sep 2017 22:43:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/preacher-review-on-your-knees-offers-an-explosive-penultimate-episode/ Preacher On Your Knees

(Each week, we’re going to kick off discussion of Preacher season 2 by examining the differences between the original comics and AMC’s television adaptation.)

Last episode, we all wondered where The Saint was, and now it’s been revealed – The Grail has him, and are using him as a weapon to take out Jesse. After all, what better way is there to take out one stubborn bastard than with the king of them?

Eugene’s Adventures With Hitler

Eugene is currently trying to escape from hell by replaying his personal hell over and over until he can break out of the loop. Like the episode with Hitler’s worst day ever (a day that involved a date at a restaurant sans plum cake), this means that we’re stuck replaying a sequence again, but Arseface is able to break out with the help of the fuhrer. They spend the rest of the episode crawling through the vents of hell and peering in on other people’s hells as they make their way to safety, and presumably, Earth. Does this mean Hitler wasn’t such a bad guy after all, and that he’ll soon get his own second coming?

It’s enough to make you wonder if the creators of Preacher regret making Hitler such a big character now that white supremacists are rearing their ugly, inbred heads once again in Trump’s America. Maybe this wasn’t the best time to make him a sympathetic hero? Just a thought.

Saint of All Drowners

The Saint of Killers has had some time to dwell on Jesse’s words at the bottom of that lake.

Why exactly did Jesse think this truck would hold the Saint? It’s a armored truck, sure, but this guy broke his way out of Hell. Better yet, Jesse could have just told him to walk to the bottom of the water and wait there for eternity! The Saint was listening to the Word, after all.

But nope, instead he sent him down there to stew and reminisce about his family in the days before he went on his vengeful rampage.

Remember Hoover lamenting last episode that this job wasn’t a great one for him, and Starr agreeing with him even though we didn’t know what this job entailed? It turns out that his job was to rescue the Saint. Yeah. They pull up the truck and replace it with an empty one and bring it to a giant empty warehouse, where Hoover sweats at the idea of having to deal with the guy in the back. They want him on their side to take out Jesse, which seems to go against their stated goals, since they want him to be a Messiah. But they have their reasons, which will soon become clear.

The Saint eventually agrees to take out Jesse and he is let out of the truck, while Hoover hilariously beats feet out of the warehouse. (Hey, he’s one of the very few to have come across him and lived.) The Saint’s first stop? A dive bar playing honky-tonk music where no one looks any differently at the enormous Texan with blood on his hands.

“What brings you to New Orleans?” the bartender asks him.

“I’m here to kill a man.” says the Saint, not one to mince words.

preacher-episode-212-tulip-negga-935

Jump Scare

Cassidy is having trouble with his son, who’s taken to the vampire life in a way Cassidy never has. He’s hiding his son’s dog in his room because he knows that there are better snacks in the world.

I’m sad I wrote the history of the jump scare last month because here is another worthy inclusion! While throwing out the trash (which contains ones of Cassidy’s severed fingers), Tulip is suddenly confronted with the appearance of the Saint. It waits perhaps a beat too long to be a perfect scare, but it is pretty threatening when he comes in and fills the frame while the music blares.

He questions her about Jesse and his weapons and she can barely stutter out a response, but he hears Jesse and Cassidy laughing and trudges off towards them. Tulip decides at this moment to face her fears and attacks him, only to get smacked away into the wall.

He heads on over to Jesse and Cass, who are embroiled in a hilarious conversation about Fight Club. Seriously, turn on the subtitles if you can’t hear it, because Cassidy is convinced that Tyler Durden is real because the only way they would follow a leader set on taking down the institutions of America would be if they were as pretty as Brad Pitt. He’s also going on again about how baby foreskins are used in baby formula.

Meanwhile the Saint picks up a little knife from the kitchen and makes his way to them.

Jesse’s Word, which seems to be distorted and failing him, chooses this moment to fail once again, and the Saint doesn’t listen to his command to get down on his knees. Cassidy gets thrown through a wall, and Jesse’s usually effective punches get knocked aside harmlessly. He puts everything he has into it, though, and just gets thrown all around the room before being knocked out. Tulip comes in too to save her man and though she fights better than anyone, she’s just no match for the Saint.

One day, we may get them all three fighting together, but that is not today. Although once again, the fight choreography is top-notch. If there’s one thing Preacher’s second season has done really right (and it’s done so much!) it’s been the incredible, varied battles.

Hoover and Featherstone are watching this whole thing, trying to wait for the perfect moment, which comes shortly after Jesse reawakens, tied up to a chair, and listens to the Saint describing what scalping sounds like.

Jesse is saved being scalped himself at the last second by none other than Hell, whose administrators come and tell the Saint that they’re going to stick his family in his personal hell since no God is checking on things right now, anyway. They also make sure to tell Jesse that they’re only here because of Herr Starr.

They also take Tulip and Cassidy to headquarters to meet Starr and reveal their plans for Jesse, which seems like overkill. They don’t like his new God complex and agree that he won’t be a good Messiah, anyway. I mean, he’s Jesse.

So good job folks! You did it! Starr’s incredibly convoluted means of separating Jesse from his companions seems to have worked, even though it was aided greatly by Jesse being a bit slow on the uptake.

preacher-episode-212-eugene-colletti-2-935

What’s Next?

For a penultimate episode, there’s not a whole lot of questions remaining. Sure, Jesse is now set to become the Messiah for the second coming, but it seems likely that Tulip and Cassidy are going to find out about The Grail’s meddling, what with the webcam being used to spy on them falling down off the wall during that fight. This also could be the moment that Tulip and Cassidy start their awful drug and violence-laden relationship, similar to the comics. We’ll also find out what happens with Eugene when he returns.

Painful, stiff, and grating knees may not just be a sign of aging—they may also be a sign of the times.

Degenerative knee arthritis, or knee osteoarthritis (OA), seems to be on the rise. Since the early part of the 20th century, its prevalence has doubled in Americans, according to a new study in PNAS. Researchers estimate that at least 19 percent of all US adults over the age of 45 now suffer from the condition, and it’s a leading cause of chronic pain. But, it’s unclear why. The most obvious suspects—longer lifespans and heftier bodies—don’t fully explain the aching jump in joint problems, researchers report.

But one thing that does seem clear is that our frames haven’t kept pace with our lifestyles. “From an evolutionary perspective, knee OA thus fits the criteria of a “mismatch disease” that is more prevalent or severe because our bodies are inadequately or imperfectly adapted to modern environments,” the researchers behind the study conclude.

The US and its Western allies will use any opportunity to harm Russia, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov told RT in an interview.

“The West, Europe do not want to help anyone. The important thing for them is to use every resource against Russia. They want to see us kneeling before them,” Kadyrov said in an exclusive interview with RT Arabic channel.

The Chechen Republic in southern Russia was the scene of two military campaigns in the 1990s and early 2000s. Ramzan Kadyrov said his father’s choice to pledge his loyalty to Moscow was the choice of the Chechen people.

“The people said they want to live as part of Russia,” he said.

Kadyrov reiterated his loyalty to Moscow, both as representative of the Chechen people and as a devout Muslim.

“My people have entrusted me to serve in good faith. And my religion also obliges me to be loyal to the commander-in-chief. As long as this country and this president allow you to build mosques and pray, your duty is to die for this president,” Kadyrov said.

Kadyrov blames Western enemies of Russia for the violence Chechnya saw after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

“The Western and European special services over the years did every possible and impossible thing to destroy Russia as a sovereign state. They chose the Chechen Republic as the stage for their game,” he said.

“That was not some bandit gang. There were fighters well trained by the special services. Our intelligence says fighters from 50 nations were involved. But Russia prevailed and has proven that she is a strong nation.”

Grant Shapps was walking through from his office to a vote in the House of Commons, making small talk with a handful of fellow Conservative MPs, when he noticed something was amiss at the gates of parliament. At first he dismissed it as another protest and carried on walking.

Moments later, he was crawling on his hands and knees for safety, having just witnessed a terror attack.

“I could hear a kerfuffle going on, which is not unusual as there’s often protests by the gates,” the former minister told BuzzFeed News. “As I’m looking around I hear, ‘BAM BAM BAM’ – what sounded like four shots to me.”

“Suddenly, a police officer is standing right where we are shouting, ‘Get down, get down, get back!’ We crawled, hands and knees, back to a safety position.”

The former minister was one of hundreds of MPs, parliamentary staff, and journalists who spent several hours in Westminster Abbey as police gathered statements. They began to trickle out of the cathedral at around 8pm.

Shapps crawled to safety while watching armed police shoot the alleged attacker who had made it onto parliamentary territory, he said.

“Within moments they were standing there telling us to get out of the way, but in reality they were standing there themselves without knowing what else was happening. It was instantaneous,” Shapps said. “I did some work when I was a minister in Mogadishu where you learn what happens when you come under attack, but I never imagined it could happen in Westminster.”

As MPs were allowed to leave Westminster on Wednesday night, five hours after the attack took place, they described a chaotic scene in which initial panic gave way to admiration for the security services and their well-formulated plan for dealing with an attack.

At first there was confusion on the part of the House of Commons authorities, who were in the process of holding a vote. Shapps says that, as one of the first people to witness the attack, he ran inside to reach the deputy speaker and inform him that the vote needed to be called off.

At first people attempted to direct him to the correct voting lobby before they realized what had happened.

One of those inside the chamber voting on a bill was Prime Minister Theresa May.

Andrew Bridgen MP was standing next to her in one of the voting lobbies when news of the attack broke. Within minutes, one of her security detail came up and quietly told told her what was happening.

“She moved very quickly,” he said.

Others took refuge elsewhere on the parliamentary estate.

Margot James, a business minister, said she was on her own in a room inside the palace when she heard police shouting outside the door. She mistakenly thought there was an assailant inside the building.

Former Labour MP Tom Levitt, who was visiting the House of Commons, said he found himself hiding with a group in the gilded 13th century Chapel of of St Mary Undercroft, wondering whether the attack would get inside.

“People were running away from the man that they’d seen with a knife, so we took sanctuary in the crypt, 10 of us,” he said.

Some of those who hid in the ancient church had witnessed the aftermath of the attack, and found themselves relying on their phones for snippets of info as to what was going on outside.

“All they saw was a man with knife and lots of people running and screaming,” he said of the rest of the group. “That was enough to upset them.”

The parliamentary estate was swiftly put on lockdown, with staff told to stay in their offices and hundreds of MPs locked in the House of Commons chamber. Some walked up to the closed doors, baffled as to why they could not get in before being used into nearby tea rooms or even the House of Commons library.

Stephen Timms, the Labour MP for East Ham in London, was in the library waiting to vote when he learned of the attack. Timms was stabbed at his constituency surgery in 2010. At one point during the incident, the local police liaison officer in his constituency rang to make sure he was okay.

Timms said he was reassured by the way the authorities handled the attack and that MPs around him had also remained calm. “We felt safe at all times,” he said.

Eventually, most were led to Westminster Abbey, where the atmosphere was described as “calm”, with police collecting witness statements.

Labour’s Chris Bryant said most MPs were concerned about their own staff, from whom they had been separated all day.

But the real focus was on what had happened to the parliamentary police officers.

“We come in every day, we see them, we chat with them. We know their names and they know our names,” Bryant said. “We’re all worried about what’s happened to them.”

Barry Gardiner, a member of the shadow cabinet, said the security services “did the job they were there to do”.

“They kept everyone calm, they kept everyone safe. The tragedy is that the police officer lost their life defending our parliament.

“Inside Westminster Abbey the atmosphere has been calm, with no one getting upset.

Bridgen said: “What’s very important is that both houses will be functioning tomorrow.”
