CEO Matthew Prince announced the company’s decision on Saturday after it initially resisted calls to stop protecting the website.

“As Kiwi Farms has felt more threatened, they have reacted by being more threatening,” Prince told The Washington Post. “We think there is an imminent danger, and the pace at which law enforcement is able to respond to those threats we don’t think is fast enough to keep up.” On the company’s blog, Prince said that Cloudflare saw an increase in targeted threats “unlike we have previously seen from Kiwi Farms or any other customer before.”

Kiwi Farms was founded in 2013 by former 8chan administrator Joshua Moon. In the decade since it went online, at least three suicides have been linked to harassment campaigns that originated on the forum. In recent weeks, Kiwi Farms has gained widespread notoriety across both sides of the US political spectrum. After she was the target of multiple swatting attacks that originated on the website, trans Twitch streamer Clara Sorrenti began a campaign to shut down Kiwi Farms. She used the hashtag DropKiwifarms to urge Cloudflare and other critical internet infrastructure providers to stop serving the website.

“There are countless people suffering because of this website,” Sorrenti told The Post on Saturday, moments after police arrived at her home in the wake of another swatting attempt. “Kiwi Farms isn’t about free speech, it’s about hate speech. The majority of the content on the site is threads used for targeted harassment against political targets.”

Separately, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia called for the forum’s shutdown after a user claiming affiliation with Kiwi Farms sent police to her home. “That website needs to be taken down,” Greene told Newsmax during an interview. “There should be no business or any kind of service where you can target your enemy."

Earlier in the week, it appeared Cloudflare would not take action against Kiwi Farms. The company published a blog post on Wednesday detailing its policies on abusive content. Without directly mentioning the forum, Prince and another executive argued that withholding security services from websites the company and public find reprehensible would ultimately harm oppressed and marginalized voices.

On Saturday, Prince described Cloudflare’s decision to block Kiwi Farms as a “dangerous one that we are not comfortable with.” He told The Post he would have preferred to take action in response to a court order but added it was an easier call than when Cloudflare decided to drop the Daily Stormer and 8chan. As of the writing of this story, Kiwi Farms is still online after moving to DDoS-guard and a Russian domain.

Her deputy, Winston Peters, is to run the country as acting PM for the next six weeks. Ardern, 37, took office last year. She announced she was expecting a baby with her partner Clarke Gayford in January. As the third female prime minister in New Zealand’s history, Ardern is the first one to give birth while in office.

‘Absolute jet’: Kiwi sets T20 world record https://briefnews.eu/absolute-jet-kiwi-sets-t20-world-record/ https://briefnews.eu/absolute-jet-kiwi-sets-t20-world-record/#respond Wed, 03 Jan 2018 09:58:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/absolute-jet-kiwi-sets-t20-world-record/ NEW Zealand Black Caps opener Colin Munro has continued his brilliant run of form by smashing a record-breaking century in the third and final Twenty20 against the West Indies.

Munro’s 104 in Tauranga made him the first player to score three hundreds in T20 internationals.

His innings, which came off 53 balls, guided New Zealand, who had won the toss, to their highest T20 total of 243-5.

Munro had scored half-centuries in the first two matches of the series.

This time, the 30-year-old left-hander kicked on, smacking 10 sixes and three fours along the way.

He brought up his fifty by flicking 36-year-old seamer Rayad Emrit’s debut ball in international T20 over the square leg boundary.

He promptly followed up with another six, this time over mid-wicket.

He featured in a 136-run opening stand with Martin Guptill, who contributed 63 in 38 balls.

Guptill fell midway through the 11th over, caught behind to give Emrit his maiden wicket.

Munro lasted until the final over, caught at long-on off paceman Carlos Brathwaite.

Skipper Brathwaite had his side’s best figures of 2-50, while Emrit, despite the torrid start, finished as the most economical bowler with 1-42 from his four overs.

The West Indies are seeking their first win of the tour after having lost both Tests and all three one-dayers.

They trailed 1-0 in the T20 series after game two, also in Tauranga two days ago, was abandoned at the end of nine overs because of rain.

Journo calls to check new Kiwi PM’s name, stunned when put through to her https://briefnews.eu/journo-calls-to-check-new-kiwi-pms-name-stunned-when-put-through-to-her/ https://briefnews.eu/journo-calls-to-check-new-kiwi-pms-name-stunned-when-put-through-to-her/#respond Sat, 21 Oct 2017 16:16:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/journo-calls-to-check-new-kiwi-pms-name-stunned-when-put-through-to-her/

A curious Australian journalist was “flabbergasted” when his routine call to clarify how the surname of New Zealand’s new PM was pronounced got re-routed directly to the future head of the government.

Jacinda Ardern, the leader of the Labour Party, is due to take office next Thursday after securing 14 extra seats in last month’s general election and striking a coalition deal with NZ First. The 37-year-old is a somewhat new face outside of New Zealand, having taken the party helm only in August.

Her name was pronounced differently by broadcasters in New Zealand and Australia, so Australian Tiger Webb, who works as a digital producer at ABC’s Radio national, decided he should double-check it in order to put the correct one in the station’s style guide.

After struggling to reach the Labour Party’s office, he called the NZ Parliament to ask staff there, but the call was transferred directly to the PM herself, he told the daily New Zealand Herald. She kindly explained that her name should sound “Ah-durn”.

“She was lovely about it. It was quite a short conversation,” he said.

Ardern told the newspaper she was “happy to help” with the inquiry.

“It was funny. I was in a meeting and my desk phone started to ring, and it doesn’t ring much so I went over and I saw it was an international number and I just picked up,” she said.

“I thought ‘oh the poor thing, clearly the operator’s just put him straight through’. I’m sure he probably didn’t intend to do that but it was no trouble at all.”

The funny exchange, which happened on Friday night, was made public after Webb described it on his Twitter account. Among the positive comments on the story was one by former NZ Prime Minister and fellow Labour leader Helen Clark, who said: “That’s New Zealand”.

Webb, who has worked for Radio National for five years, said finding Ardern so accessible surprised him and played well with the perception of New Zealand in his home country.

“There’s a lot of New Zealand pride – which I totally understand – and a lot of Australians are really flabbergasted I think because we feel like here we’ve become very disconnected from any physical manifestation of government and government is something that happens separately from people a lot of the time.”

Waratahs pay for kick off blunder0:56

Super Rugby: Waratahs pay for kick off blunder.

The Blues celebrate Rieko Ioane’s try as Israel Folau contemplates another defeat.

Jamie PandaramThe Daily Telegraph

LOOKING around the Allianz Stadium pitch, the problem with Australian rugby was staring us right in the face, lurking near the right touchline.

His name, Rieko Ioane.

He is just 20 years old, yet he monstered the seasoned Waratahs veterans in front of him.

Ioane is playing his first full season of Super Rugby, having graduated from the New Zealand sevens system.

ANOTHER DEFEAT: Blues brothers brong dowm bumbling Tahs

He scored two spectacular tries, ran for 170 metres and made 12 tackle busts.

And the problem with Australian rugby is this; where is our Rieko Ioane?

There is none. Not one player coming through the Super ranks this year in Australian teams threatens defensive lines and shows the potential Ioane does.

And this has been happening for years.

Australia couldn’t find a Nehe Milner-Skudder or Ardie Savea in recent years either.

So while the Waratahs made it a respectable loss of 40-33 to the Blues after a second-half fightback, the defeat was inevitable when they trailed 26-0 at half-time.

The Blues blitzed the Tahs with the help of Ioane’s brilliance.

New Zealand teams are now 17-0 against Australian sides in 2017. The gap has never been wider, and shows no signs of closing this year or next.

On a miserable Saturday, South Africa’s Lions steamrolled the Melbourne Rebels 47-10.

Then the Chiefs hammered Queensland Reds 46-17 in New Plymouth, before NSW put out 40 minutes of rubbish in front of their exasperated supporters.

At the same time, the Australia under-20s side was taking on their Kiwi counterparts on the Gold Coast.

New Zealand strolled home 43-6.

There were a few youngsters on show who could be the next Ioane – none of them wearing gold jerseys.

Market Watch: Next Shark up?1:05

NRL: Emma Lawrence and Nathan Ryan present the latest edition of Market Watch, including contract news at the Sharks and Broncos.

Dallin Watene Zelezniak has re-signed with Penrith.

AAP

PENRITH have locked in another major piece of their NRL future after re-signing winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak on a new three-year deal.

Watene-Zelezniak has been an integral part of their backline since making his first grade debut in 2014, and finally cracked the international arena with New Zealand last year.

The 21-year-old said it was a straightforward decision to remain at the foot of the mountains, where he is likely to be their long-term winger on the right edge.

“The decision to re-sign with the Panthers was an easy one to make,” Watene-Zelezniak said on Monday.

“Penrith has been my home since I was a kid and it has always been my dream to play first grade for the Panthers.

“I consider myself very lucky to be able to live that dream at such a fantastic club.”

Watene-Zelezniak’s commitment leaves only a handful of their first-choice 17 off-contract at the end of the year, including Dean Whare, Sitaleki Akauola and Viliame Kikau.

The Panthers sit eighth on the competition with two wins from their opening five games after going down swinging in their most recent match against Melbourne on Saturday.

Laurie on dropping Johnson1:40

NRL 360: Laurie Daley says that he would consider dropping Shaun Johnson

Paul Vaughan has been in red hot form for the Dragons in 2017.

AAP

NSW coach Laurie Daley believes his Warriors counterpart Stephen Kearney may need to drop or bench Shaun Johnson to get the best out of the enigmatic playmaker.

The Warriors have made an ordinary start to the NRL season, winning just one of their four games with Johnson also struggling for consistency. Despite not being at his best, the 26-year-old former Golden Boot winner earlier this month became the Warriors’ all-time record pointscorer. Kearney has no shortage of options for the halves spots, even though Kieran Foran has yet to make his debut and is battling with a hamstring injury. Junior Kiwi Mafoa’aeata Hingano and utility back Tuimoala Lolohea are also capable of playing in the halves.

Johnson has shown his class in big international games, but Daly feels he may need the reality check of a demotion to stir him into unleashing his full potential on a regular basis.

“Sometimes I think you may have to do to something a little bit different with Shaun, maybe to get the best out of him,” Daley said on Fox Sports NRL 360. “Either play him elsewhere, starting him off the bench, not select him. “He’s the most influential player in that team when they’ve got the ball. “He hasn’t reached his talent yet.

“Something needs to happen with Shaun to take his game to the next level and I think sometimes players need a bit of a reality check.”

DALEY LIKE LOOK OF ITALIAN STALLION

Nine months after being dropped to reserve grade and told by Ricky Stuart he was unwanted at Canberra, Paul Vaughan has rocketed into NSW State of Origin calculations.

The Italian Stallion could prove a Blues bolter after starting his tenure at St George Illawarra as one of the form front rowers of the NRL in 2017. He was once again devastating in the Red V’s win over the Warriors at Kogarah on Sunday, leading the charge with 165m running metres and making 33 tackles. The former Italian international’s move to Wollongong has revitalised his career and in his first four appearances this year, only once has he failed to make 150m or 25 tackles.

“He’s played well Vaughany,” Blues coach Laurie Daley said.

“He’s a guy that has played a little bit of rep football over the last couple of years with the Country Origin team.

“It looks as though the change has done him the world of good. He’s a big fella, got good leg speed and seems to be playing really well.” Importantly, he has outpointed the likes of Cronulla’s Andrew Fifita and Penrith pair James Tamou and Trent Merrin — considered Blues contenders — in head-to-head battles in the first four weeks.

Vaughan was dropped by Stuart to NSW Cup for three weeks in the back end of last season but has proven himself worthy of a starting berth for Paul McGregor’s Dragons.

Props don’t usually reach the peak of their powers until their mid-20s and Vaughan, 25, said he felt like he was coming into his own.

“I think I am coming into that peak period,” he said.

“This is my fifth year in the NRL and I don’t think I’ve played my best footy yet and I think I’ve got a lot of potential that I haven’t tapped into yet. I told Mary (McGregor) that when we first sat down here to do the deal here. “I think I can play my best footy here at the Saints and it’s been good start.”

Young stayer has Kiwis going nuts0:33

Horse Racing: Kiwi three-year-old Gingernuts has thrown down the gauntlet to his ATC Derby rivals with a dominant staying performance to win the Rosehill Guineas.

BRAD DAVIDSONThe Daily Telegraph

SUPERBLY named New Zealander Gingernuts stormed into Australian Derby favouritism with a dominant win at Rosehill on Saturday but rival jockey Tommy Berry is adamant Inference will turn the tables on a firmer track in a fortnight.

Gingersnuts became the fourth New Zealand-trained horse since 2011 (Jimmy Choux 2011, It’s A Dundeel 2013 and Volkstok’n’barrell 2015) to win the Rosehill Guineas when he ploughed through the mud best to claim the 2000m feature by 2 ¼ lengths.

Gingernuts firmed into a $ 4.60 equal favourite with Inference for the Derby in the process and will now try to emulate the feats of It’s A Dundeel in 2013 and claim the Rosehill Guineas- Australian Derby double at Randwick on April 1.

WINX BLITZ: SHE’S DONE IT AGAIN

“It’s been a long day waiting for this and watching Winx,” overawed co-trainer Jamie Richards said.

“I’m really pleased for the team at home and David (Ellis) bought this horse at the Ready To Run Sale and didn’t pay a lot for him and we syndicated him amongst some clients of ours and they are having a whirlwind ride.

“It’s great for the industry when horses like this can step up and it looks like he will be hard to beat in two weeks’ time.”

But Berry, who finished a distant second on Inference, is adamant the Team Hawkes-trained colt can have the last laugh providing the track is dry in the $ 2 million Australian Derby (2400m).

“On a dry track he will turn the tables (on Gingernuts),” a confident Berry said.

“The other day (in the Randwick Guineas) I said before today he was on that outside part of the track that wasn’t real heavy.

“Today he struggled in the conditions and I was a beaten horse at the 1000m when the winner came around me and just through his tenacity and toughness he found the line but he wasn’t entitled to do what he did today.”

While Inference struggled in the conditions, Richards was always upbeat Gingernuts would handle the bottomless track and confirmed they would pay the $ 44,000 late entry fee to run him in the Derby.

“His last gallop at Matamata last Saturday morning before he came over was on a track similar to this and he got through it really well,” he said.

“Obviously race pressure is a lot different but he just seems to go in anything and since he has stepped up to 2000m he has really come on.”

Winning jockey Opie Bosson won the Australian Derby on Mongolian Khan in 2015 and said it was hard to compare the two horses.

“They are two totally different types of horses and (Gingernuts) is a lot smaller,” he said.

“(Gingernuts) is quite untapped really and when the track is a lot better he will be a lot better too.

“He was baulking around the whole way up the straight and not really concentrating and he just got there too easy.”

Bayliss bags three-state treble

REGAN Bayliss guided Derryn to mpressive win at Rosehill Gardens to cap a week to remember for the young Melbourne jockey.

It all began at Flemington last Saturday when Bayliss rode his first Group 1 winner on Redkirk Warrior in the Newmarket Handicap then two days later, on his 20th birthday, he partnered Annus Mirabilis to Adelaide Cup glory.

Bayliss then scored his first Sydney stakes win with Derryn in the Listed $ 125,000 Darby Munro Stakes (1200m).

Derryn ($ 8.50) revelled in the very heavy conditions to streak past Crafty Cop ($ 8.50) to score by nearly two lengths with Tactical Advantage ($ 2.70 favourite) one-and-a-quarter lengths away third.

“I was confident when I noticed how easily Derryn was rounding them up from the 600m,’’ trainer David Hayes said.

“For a few strides in the straight I was worried he might have got to the front too soon but Regan is riding with a lot of confidence and the margin on the line was convincing.’’

Hayes said Derryn will now be aimed at the $ 600,000 Arrowfield 3yo Sprint (1200m) at Royal Randwick on April 8, Day Two of The Championships.

Tactical Advantage was aiming for his fifth successive win and although game in defeat, jockey Glyn Schofield said the young sprinter struggled in the heavy going.

New Zealand economic growth underwhelmed expectations in the final three months of 2016.

According to Statistics New Zealand (SNZ), GDP grew by just 0.4% on a production basis, missing expectations for an increase of 0.7%.

It was the weakest quarterly expansion since the June quarter of 2015. September quarter GDP, previously reported as a gain of 1.1%, was also revised lower to show an increase of 0.8%.

“Growth in service industries was partly offset by weaker activity in primary industries also flowing through into manufacturing,” national accounts senior manager at SNZ Gary Dunnet said.

“At an industry level, growth was a mixed bag, with only half of our 16 industries rising.”

Services industries grew by 0.7%, led by strength in business services, arts, recreation, and other services and health care and residential care.

Offsetting that boost, agriculture production slid 0.6%, largely due to lower milk production.

Goods exports tumbled by 6.0%, the largest quarterly fall since 1992. Dairy exports alone slid by a massive 7.5%. That weakness was partly offset by an increase of 2.1% in services exports, leaving overall exports of goods and services down 3.8%.

“This, coupled with falls in forestry and mining, were reflected in lower manufacturing activity and lower primary exports,” said Dunnet.

Manufacturing production fell 1.6%, driven by falls in food, beverage, and tobacco manufacturing, and in transport equipment, machinery and equipment manufacturing.

On a year-on-year basis, GDP grew by 2.7%, down from the 3.3% pace of the September quarter and well short of expectations for a moderation to 3.1%.

kiwi new zealand dollarCurrencymuseum.net

Annual GDP growth came in at 3.1%, up from 2.9% in the prior quarter, but slightly below expectations for an increase of 3.2%.

In current prices, the size of the New Zealand economy was $ 261 billion.

The undershoot in the December quarter GDP figure, along with the downward revision to the prior growth, has seen the New Zealand dollar fall sharply, seeing the Kiwi give back around half of its post US FOMC gains.

It currently buys .7011, down 0.45% for the session.

The Kiwi is also copping a pasting against the Australian dollar with the AUD/NZD jumping to as high as 1.0996, the loftiest level since April 2016.
