A statement from the American Heart Association (AHA), aimed at increasing global awareness among physicians, warns that US doctors need to learn to recognize and treat Chagas before a devastating outbreak occurs.

“Early detection of Chagas disease is critical, allowing prompt initiation of therapy when the evidence for cure is strong,” wrote Caryn Bern, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California in San Francisco, in the online statement.

Doctors can detect the disease through a simple blood test and, if caught early, it can be treated by medication. “If untreated, infection is lifelong and can be life-threatening,” the CDC warns.

The Chagas disease is caused by a parasite transmitted by a blood-sucking insect called triatomine, known as the “kissing bug,” because it tends to bite people’s faces near their mouth and can cause strokes and heart failure. About 30 percent of infected people can develop life-threatening complications, including chronic heart disease.

The bug then spreads the parasite, known as Trypanosoma cruzi (T cruzi), by defecating near the bite, which the victims can then unwittingly move into the open wound, or their eyes or mouth.

The disease has been labelled a silent killer because 70 percent of people don’t develop any signs of infection. Symptoms can include fever, lethargy, aches, rashes and swollen glands.

Disney Animation head John Lasseter is taking a leave of absence from Disney/Pixar due to “missteps,” according to an internal memo that was sent to staff on Tuesday, as allegations of his inappropriate conduct broke.

“It’s never easy to face your missteps, but it’s the only way to learn from them,” Lasseter wrote in the memo first obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. Business Insider has since received the memo.

Though Lasseter does not specify the missteps in his memo, THR published another story shortly after news of Lasseter’s leave of absence broke on Tuesday. In THR’s investigative report, Lasseter is accused of behavior including “grabbing, kissing, making comments about physical attributes” to Disney employees.

“As a result, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the leader I am today compared to the mentor, advocate and champion I want to be,” Lasseter went on to write in the memo. “It’s been brought to my attention that I have made some of you feel disrespected or uncomfortable. That was never my intent. Collectively, you mean the world to me, and I deeply apologize if I have let you down.”

Lasseter added in the memo that he’s taking a six-month sabbatical in the hopes it will give him “the opportunity to start taking better care of myself, to recharge and be inspired, and ultimately return with the insight and perspective I need to be the leader you deserve.”

Lasseter is best known as a driving force of Pixar, and was the director on “Toy Story” 1 and 2, “Cars” 1 and 2, and “A Bug’s Life.”

In 2006, after Disney purchased Pixar, Lasseter became chief creative officer at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios. Since then, both animation studios have flourished, releasing such recent Oscar winners as “Inside Out” and “Zootopia.”

Pixar is releasing its newest movie “Coco” on Thanksgiving.

“We are committed to maintaining an environment in which all employees are respected and empowered to do their best work,” a Disney spokesperson wrote in a statement to Business Insider. “We appreciate John’s candor and sincere apology and fully support his sabbatical.”

I have always wanted our animation studios to be places where creators can explore their vision with the support and collaboration of other gifted animators and storytellers. This kind of creative culture takes constant vigilance to maintain. It’s built on trust and respect, and it becomes fragile if any members of the team don’t feel valued. As a leader, it’s my responsibility to ensure that doesn’t happen; and I now believe I have been falling short in this regard.

I’ve recently had a number of difficult conversations that have been very painful for me. It’s never easy to face your missteps, but it’s the only way to learn from them. As a result, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the leader I am today compared to the mentor, advocate and champion I want to be. It’s been brought to my attention that I have made some of you feel disrespected or uncomfortable. That was never my intent. Collectively, you mean the world to me, and I deeply apologize if I have let you down. I especially want to apologize to anyone who has ever been on the receiving end of an unwanted hug or any other gesture they felt crossed the line in any way, shape, or form. No matter how benign my intent, everyone has the right to set their own boundaries and have them respected.

In my conversations with Disney, we are united in our commitment to always treat any concerns you have with the seriousness they deserve, and to address them in an appropriate manner. We also share a desire to reinforce the vibrant, respectful culture that has been the foundation of our studios’ success since the beginning. And we agree the first step in that direction is for me to take some time away to reflect on how to move forward from here. As hard as it is for me to step away from a job I am so passionate about and a team I hold in the highest regard, not just as artists but as people, I know it’s the best thing for all of us right now. Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising?

This week Ron Swanson talks to us about the future, watch a punk rocker help suicidal strangers, watch how women are affected by opioids, watch ladies cutting loose and getting up to no good in Finland, watch a different lady cut loose in Ireland by going on a little crime spree, and see a trailer that deals with mother!’s loose comparisons to Rosemary’s Baby head on.

Infinity Baby Trailer

What an odd trailer.

While the opening exchange with Kieran Culkin is a little stilted, the rest of the trailer is a fascinating oddity. Director Bob Byington certainly has a high concept that he’s working through but the narrative they’ve decided to reveal really is the heart of the entire presentation. It’s good, too, as the weirdness of what it is we’re actually being asked to buy into requires a modicum of background in understanding the “Huh?” factor and it works swimmingly.

The Departure Trailer

Open my heart and peer inside.

One of the first things that leaped out of this trailer once you just let the story reveal itself is just how profoundly simple and complex this story is. Director Lana Wilson, who some may have heard of from her powerful documentary After Tiller, which dealt with doctors who perform third-trimester abortions, has chosen a really interesting subject that on paper seems wildly compelling: a former punk singer in Japan finds Buddhism, becomes a priest, and then becomes a one person suicide prevention hotline in a country that is almost 25th in the world for the number of suicides within in its borders. It takes a heavy toll on our protagonist and the resulting trailer is an exercise in understanding what channeling all that grief can do to someone. I was moved by what’s here and to cut through the noise that is so many trailers to sift through like panning for gold in a stream it’s a revelation.

Heroin(e) Trailer

This is an epidemic.

One of the things I like about being a new Netflix viewer (anyone else ready to binge American Vandal?) is that little things like this pop up to help compliment the already robust content the platform offers. Director Elaine McMillion Sheldon’s 40 minute short (maybe it should be called a Medium at that length?) feels like required viewing for anyone who has even a passing interest in what opioids are doing to communities all across the nation. Specifically, though, it covers this story from the perspective of three women who are in the gripping throes of what this narcotic offers to those who find themselves addicted to it. It feels small, it feels personal, but it’s the exact kind of thing that helps contextualize a social problem that many just have a stance on without having it contextualized.

Kissing Candice Trailer

Yes plz.

Director Aoife McArdle has something of an original story to tell in that we have a seizure prone girl get into some mischief. I don’t know what side she’s on or why this seemingly meek lady is ready to raise some hell but I do know the tone and the pacing of this trailer is clutch. It’s atmospheric, enchanting, alluring, and beautifully confusing, but it’s legit. I’m down for what it’s selling and the nuances of how we transition from one moment to the next isn’t jarring as much as it manages to increase my need to see the entire thing. Give me more.

mother! Alternate World Trailer

One of the first trips I ever made to California in service of writing about movie trailers was to a nondescript building in Beverly Hills where I saw which was, at that time, the yet unreleased trailer for Batman Begins by the folks who were making it. Seeing the materials they have to work with, the kinds of things it takes to create something worthy enough for people to watch, the nearly blank canvas some have in pulling out the heart and soul of a picture, it’s a gift. I was, and still am, enamored with the skills and dedication that it takes to be a good trailer editor. Looks like Joel Townsend is one such guy as he made one here that takes the loose comparisons some people were making about mother!’s marketing to Rosemary’s Baby. Seriously, when you do these things they can go in a couple different directions in terms of how clever or how interesting they are but this one’s a keeper. Tongue planted firmly in cheek, indeed.

Miami Trailer

When you have a film festival as rich and chock full of little delights you didn’t know you wanted to consume you’re bound to have something come out of left field that sets your heart a’flutter. And this is one of them. Director Zaida Bergroth is bringing us a story about sisters, strippers, and hard living. All of this trailer is in its native language so this is really an exercise in getting initial impressions based on what you see. But, what’s here is candy for the eyes and genuinely stirs the soul. The reviews for the film have been kind so this is one gem I’d like to get to know a little better once it’s within viewing distance.

Peace and love were shown to be no match for the power of a police water cannon during G20 protests in Hamburg, as a kissing couple were left thoroughly soaked by a vigorous blast.

More than 100,000 people took to the streets of Hamburg to demonstrate against the G20 summit of world leaders, with 15,000 police on patrol.

Adding a whole new level of intensity to the idea of throwing cold water on hot passions, the couple felt the full force of the powerful cannon as they were mid-kiss during demonstrations on Friday.

The majority of Friday’s protests were peaceful, though incidents of rioting were reported throughout the day. Numerous videos show rioters setting fire to cars and trucks, looting shops, and setting up barricades around the city.

“I have every understanding for peaceful demonstrations but violent demonstrations put human lives in danger,” Merkel said.

While rioters and police clashed on the streets, world leaders, including US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, attended a Beethoven concert in Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie concert hall.

While the youngsters got down to sharing a cheeky kiss in their bed, Sue Evans was out to break up the pair, distressed by their “wet” smooching.

The 48-year-old remarked: “Kissy, kissy, kissy… Can you not go somewhere else and do your kissing?

“It’s very strange in here, can you not go somewhere else with the lip smacking?

“We don’t do it in here, and it’s very strange in here,” Sue ranted. 

Sam was having none of it, claiming that Sue was “c***blocking” him, arguing: “Absolute f***ing melt she is”. 

However Sue was not finished there, claiming as she stormed off: “It’s really wet – we heard it from over there. Oh my god: wet, wet, wet.”

Viewers had mixed opinions on the confrontation, with one saying: “Ew, I hope next week they’re nominated.”

Another agreed, saying: “It is annoying, who the hell kisses that noisily!!”

However, one fan was clearly on Sam and Ellie’s team, commenting: “Sue is annoying wow get her out.”

A second added: “Hate Sam and Ellie but really Sue, is there anything that doesn’t annoy and upset you? All she does is criticise people, has she even smiled yet? Let them have their fun, don’t be jealous because you don’t even know what fun means.”

This comes after last night’s dramatic episode which left viewers disgusted when housemates had their toes licked during a “gross” challenge. 

Fans were outraged by the scenes which saw three housemates have their toes smeared in jam and then licked by ferrets, dogs and then even a human. 

Big Brother airs nightly on Channel 5.

A Republican state senator from Oklahoma has been accused of grabbing and kissing an Uber driver, according to a BuzzFeed News report Wednesday.

The driver alleged that she picked up Bryce Marlatt around 10 p.m. on June 26 to drop him off at a hotel in Oklahoma City. The driver then claimed that Marlatt had grabbed her forcefully and started kissing her neck while she was driving.

“She was giving this person a ride,” said Oklahoma City Police Department Master Sergeant Gary Knight, according to KFOR News. “He was in the back seat. And, he kept reaching around, grabbing her, kissing on her, things along those lines.”

Two days later, the driver reported the incident and said “she was unsure what she needed to do,” according to a police report obtained by BuzzFeed that redacted the names of the driver and the alleged assailant. Based on basic information, the driver was able to find a picture of Marlatt online.

“The senator was shocked and surprised at the allegations,” said Robert Don Gifford, Marlatt’s attorney. “He was, he really wants to get to the bottom of this. He’s asked us to reach out to Uber, which we have. We’re trying to get to the bottom of this and figure out what’s going on.”

According to the police report filed by the driver, Uber declined to provide her with information about her passenger; however, Uber said it was releasing information to law-enforcement officials.

“What’s been reported is not tolerated and has no place on the Uber app,” Uber said in a statement to BuzzFeed. “We are working with the Oklahoma City Police Department and will provide any information to them that would be helpful for their ongoing investigation.”

Neither Oklahoma City police nor Marlatt’s office were immediately available for comment on Wednesday night.

Marlatt has represented Oklahoma as a state senator for nearly 10 years. In 2015, he pleaded no contest after law enforcement officials found him asleep on the road in his running vehicle. Officers said they detected alcohol when he rolled his windows down, according to Fox 25 News. 

Asked if he had been drinking, Marlatt reportedly said “no more than anyone else.”
