“On the ground the intelligence is non-existent, we don’t have an embassy there anymore, we don’t have any kind of official or formal presence there anymore, and… what the military collects remotely can only go so far,” Kiriakou, a former CIA officer-turned whistleblower, told RT.

The Pentagon earlier implied that it has some intelligence on hand, including of its own, which it has to look into before a final decision on Syria can be made. “We’re still assessing the intelligence — ourselves and our allies,” US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Wednesday.

Kiriakou doubts that any of the countries that have leveled accusations against Syria possess any clear intelligence. For instance, British PM Theresa May, he said, chose to use reservations, saying, “all indications point to” the Syrian government culpability instead of explicitly attributing the blame to Damascus.

“That tells me that there is no intelligence that says: this is what happened, this is who did it.”

At an urgent meeting of the British Cabinet on Thursday, the ministers also appeared to leave room for error, stating that it was “highly likely” that the Syrian government was to blame.

“Unless you already have people on the ground who are reporting back and who you’ve cultivated over the course of years you are not going to get information,” the former CIA agent explained, adding that it will be even harder, if not outright impossible, to find out who was behind the alleged incident in a post-factum investigation.

“It could be easy to determine that chlorine was used, or something else was used, it’s going to be virtually impossible to find out who did it,” he said.

A potential assault on Syria, an independent country, by the US cannot be justified under international law, Kiriakou said.

“A response by us would be clearly a violation of the United Nations charter, which makes it a war crime,” he said, noting that the US neither has the permit from the UN Security Council nor from the “legitimate internationally recognized government of Syria to attack their property, their land.”

It is “a big guessing game” what happens in Syria next, Kiriakou said. There is, however, a plan for de-escalation if tensions over Syria with Russia and Iran reach a boiling point, he believes.

“Plan B, I think, is backing off. It’s declaring victory and going home,” Kiriakou said, adding that it is not the US military but, ironically, the US diplomats who are pulling the world dangerously close to an all-out war.

“When I was at the CIA, one thing that was very clear to me was that it was the military that was least excited to use force. It was the State Department, that always wanted to attack, attack, attack.”

With Bush-era war hawk John Bolton now advising the president on matters of national security, this scenario has all the chances to become reality, Kiriakou said.

“Now that John Bolton is a National Security Adviser, we have a real problem with the willingness in this White House to use force,” he said.

Were it solely up to the generals to decide on using the military option, “there would not be any of that,” Kiriakou said. But with Bolton calling shots, the US risks entrenching in Syria and going far beyond a single major strike, as it was in the case of the US missile attack on Syria’s Shayrat Airbase last year.

“I fear that we’re going to go deeper, far deeper this time than we did a year ago. This isn’t going to be a pinprick strike if we finally decide to move in.”

As Julian Assange enjoys “victory and vindication” following the closure of the Swedish prosecutors’ investigation, both he and his supporters know the fight is far from over.

“I welcome the Swedish prosecutor’s decision to end its investigation of Julian Assange,” John Kiriakou, a former CIA Counterterrorism Officer and whistleblower told RT. “We should not celebrate yet, however.”

“The governments of the United Kingdom and the United States have plotted against Mr. Assange for the past seven years, trying to silence him for his exposure of their crimes.”

Kiriakou, who was the first to acknowledge the CIA’s use of torture, spoke up because he believed the use of torture was “immoral, unethical and illegal.” He served 30 months for violating the Intelligence Identities Protection Act by confirming the name of an officer involved in the CIA’s secret rendition program, and was released in 2015.

“The Swedish government has taken itself out of the equation,” he continued. “But I believe that if Mr. Assange were to leave the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, he would still be arrested on trumped up national security charges and extradited to the United States, where he would find it utterly impossible to receive a fair hearing.”

The Courage Foundation, an international organization supporting  whistleblowers and truth tellers, has turned its focus to WikiLeaks and its staff, following the release of whistleblower Chelsea Manning on Wednesday.

Manning provided WikiLeaks with some of its most explosive revelations, including the ‘Collateral Murder’ video, the War Logs, State Department emails and decades of US embassy cables. 

“What Chelsea [Manning] endured awaits another Courage Foundation beneficiary, Julian Assange, should he step outside the Ecuadorean embassy in London,” investigative journalist John Pilger told RT earlier this week.

“Julian Assange and the WikiLeaks staff are in danger,” Pilger continued. “WikiLeaks has been so successful in informing people all over the world of the surveillance and war state constructed by rapacious power that it is now fulfills the role of free journalism that the corporate media falsely claims for itself.”

“The DOJ [Department of Justice] has been running an unprecedented and wide-ranging investigation into WikiLeaks for its publishing and sourcing work since 2010,” the Courage Foundation explained. “It has involved paid informers, illegal interrogations in Europe and secret search warrants. Recently CIA Director Mike Pompeo called WikiLeaks a ‘hostile intelligence service.’”

“Recent reports cite Cablegate, the Iraq and Afghan War Logs and Vault 7 publications as well as WikiLeaks’ work in getting NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden asylum, as key to the investigation,” the foundation added.

“Free journalism is, by definition, a threat to those forces that secretly order, control and blight people’s lives,” Pilger said. “If Julian Assange was the editor of the New York Times doing his job as the US Constitution says he can, he would not be living in two small rooms, denied sunlight.”

“The difference is that Assange and the WikiLeaks staff are doing what journalists no longer do; they are the agents of people not power. They deserve our support.”

RT spoke to the whistleblower about his upcoming book, “Doing time as a spy,” sharing scary moments in prison, but also the techniques that helped him survive.

“I took 20 life lessons I learned through my years of CIA training, some of them are meant tongue in cheek, things like, ‘Admit nothing. Deny everything. Make counter-accusations.’ But there are others that are serious, [for instance], ‘When calm is not to your benefit, chaos is your friend.’ Or ‘Recruit spies to steal secrets or anything else that you need.’”

That essentially means that “the endgame is to stay safe and to stay on the very top of the social heap in prison.”

The CIA for its part resisted the publication of the book as strongly as it could, using their own red tape tactics, Kiriakou told RT.

“If they don’t like your opinions, they’ll redact them in your text, and they’ll make you appeal, sometimes over and over again. The publication review board has by law 30 days to review a manuscript. They never ever meet that 30-day deadline, and they know there’s nothing you can do about it.”

His own book actually became a cautionary tale about the practice, he said.

“It took them eight months to get back to me, they sent me a letter saying that they needed another year. I said, that’s not the way it works, you have 30 days, I’m going to send it to the publisher. And a week later, they came back and said it was clear. They redacted one sentence, which I was happy to take out,” Kiriakou told RT.

Twenty-three months in prison taught Kiriakou that he was “far more patient, resourceful and ruthless” than he ever thought he was.

“My very first day in prison, the guard told me that if somebody walks into your cell uninvited, that is an act of aggression, and you’re going to have to defend yourself. Well, I’d only been in prison for 40 minutes when two Aryans walked into my cell, one of them with an enormous swastika that took up the whole front of his neck.”

So Kiriakou prepared to defend himself, when ‘the Aryans,’ as he calls them, asked if he was gay, an informant or a child molester, and when he said no to all three… invited him to sit with them at the cafeteria.

Later on, he met an Italian – in this case, meaning ‘a member of the organized crime family’ – who said very dramatically that Kiriakou should be sitting with the Italians from then on.

“It was because I was able to form these bonds with a variety of groups, including the Italians, that they ended up trusting me and valuing my company and my advice.”

When asked if there ever was the darkest moment during his time in prison, when he regretted speaking out against the CIA in the first place, Kiriakou was positive, and told RT about one very disturbing incident.

“Two of the guards, correction officers, tried to trick me into doing physical harm to another prisoner by telling me that he had received orders to kill me in prison. In fact, they called the other guy, and told him that I had received orders to kill him. That was kind of my darkest day.”

Kiriakou was sentenced to 30 months at the Loretto Federal Correctional Institution near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His term began on February 28, 2013, and was supposed to end in August 2015.

Kiriakou first spoke of the CIA’s torture program, including waterboarding technics, in 2007, during an interview with ABC News. The investigation that eventually led to Kiriakou began in 2009.

Kiriakou was released on February 3, 2015, to serve the remaining three months of his term at his home in Arlington, Virginia.
