Hollywood has never had a healthy relationship with sex. Torn between leering salaciousness and code-mandated puritanism, the end results on-screen have often been messy, thematically conflicted, and deeply unsexy. Much has been made about the state of on-screen sensuality in 2022 and the blockbuster age, where ultra-muscular and fit bodies are fetishized yet entirely divorced from sex itself. As one viral article published last year in Blood Knife out it, “everyone is beautiful and no one is horny.”
Things are improving in small ways, mostly on streaming thanks to shows like “Bridgerton” that undeniably f***, but everything remains pretty limited in terms of what goes on between the sheets. Kink of any kind is still a no-go topic for screens big and small. While the highly profitable adaptation of the much-derided “Fifty Shades” trilogy was sold as a journey into the dark pleasure of BDSM, the end results were decidedly vanilla and not all that erotic. Besides, 15 years prior, another movie beat it at its own game.
Released in 2002, “Secretary” brought sadomasochism to the forefront in a uniquely quirky romantic drama that blew the dust off the entire rom-com genre. Directed by Steven Shainberg and adapted very loosely from a Mary Gaitskill short story by Erin Cressida Wilson, “Secretary” delved into the curiously well-functioning relationship between Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal), an awkward misfit who becomes the secretary and submissive of E. Edward Grey, an eccentric lawyer confused by his own dominant desires (he is, of course, played by James Spader, and yes, people have long wondered if “Fifty Shades” writer E.L. James borrowed the name Grey for her own purposes.) Opening with a scene where Lee, strutting through the office and completing her mundane duties while wearing an arm bar that keeps her spread out like a cross, the film announces its intentions loud and proud.

Maggie Gyllenhaal had her much-deserved breakout with “Secretary,” establishing her unique brand of knowing charm that so many films have failed to utilize effectively over the decades. Lee begins as a mouse of a woman, fresh from a mental hospital following an incident of self-harm that went wrong and living with her warring parents. She seeks employment for the very first time as a means of independence, even as her mother waits for her in the car all day to drive her back home. She seems delicate, ready to break once more, but Gyllenhaal imbues Lee with a quiet determination that soon blossoms into true confidence. It’s a Cinderella story with a touch of “Pygmalion,” if Henry Higgins enjoyed administrating a thorough spanking to Eliza Doolittle.
The case could easily be made that James Spader is the most unfettered representation of pure sexual depravity that American cinema has had over the past 30-plus years. “Secretary” feels like the happy ending to the unofficial deviant cinematic trilogy that includes “Sex, Lies, and Videotape” and “Crash.” While both of those films carry a far darker moral center, “Secretary” feels almost quaint by comparison. It’s a reminder of Hollywood’s squeamishness towards sex that “Secretary,” which doesn’t actually show that much sex, was considered so wholly raunchy when it premiered. The most striking Spader performances utilize his aura of worldly knowledge, that palpable sense that he truly has seen and done everything there is to experience. A blushing ingenue he is not!
Here, Spader is almost a Hugh Grant type, a rom-com hero with a slight bumbling edge (although Spader plays this nervousness with his typical combination of smarm and charm that has worked so well for close to four decades.) Grey isn’t always at ease with his desires and Spader’s skittishness brings his nervousness to the forefront. For an actor so good at embodying superego, it’s remarkably effective when he squirms to reveal a kind of naivety to Grey’s conundrum.
Their romance is, fittingly, a power play, but not one as straightforward as the dominant/submissive dynamic would suggest. Lee starts the story almost crushed by her own mental and familial struggles but these are not what make her an ideal sub for Grey. When she blooms into a confident and sensually assured woman, it makes Grey, who feels far less secure in his desires, feel off-center. She pursues him relentlessly in the third act, eager to prove to him that, yes, they can be a loving and committed couple who just so happen to enjoy a kinky dynamic 24/7. BDSM, typically portrayed on-screen as either a freakish spectacle or cartoonish self-parody, is something to be taken seriously here. Not too seriously, of course. “Secretary” has fun with Lee and Grey’s games, such as when he saddles her up like a horse atop his desk. Gyllenhaal and Spader have chemistry to burn, a kind of spark that is impossible to recreate without the right actors in place. It’s tough to imagine anyone else as Lee and Grey, let alone any 2022 movie star.

None of this is to say that “Secretary” is some glowing representation of BDSM or should be taken as gospel. While it’s leaps and bounds ahead of “Fifty Shades of Grey” in terms of the central dynamic, it’s still ultimately a fantasy that doesn’t always focus on laying out the ground rules for a safe and healthy dom/sub romance. You can certainly have a problem with that — and many do — although fans tend to be kinder to “Secretary” than E.L. James’ “Twilight” fan fiction because its fantasies have a sense of humor about them (such as when Lee serenely counts out the peas Edward has told her she can eat while her family look on in bemusement).
“Secretary” also succeeds over “Fifty Shades” because it’s not interested in justifying the characters’ sexual proclivities as acts of trauma that must be explained. Lee finds solace in submission as a way to cope with her mental illness but it’s a world away from the “Fifty Shades” series portraying a man’s dominant desires as the side effect of sexual abuse and a negligent mother. It’s not something to be “cured” to make way for missionary sex between man and wife with a baby in the next room. It’s not an either/or decision: you can have both. Lee and Grey keep up their dynamic and that’s the happy ending: two souls sharing a mutually beneficial love that doesn’t fit into the smothering restrictions of traditional marriage. A happy-ever-after is whatever best suits the central couple, a reflection of the ways that they have found space in one another’s lives for a future of bliss. Would that “Fifty Shades” had learned that lesson.
Twenty years later, “Secretary” still feels vibrant, sexy, romantic, and cut from a very different cloth. We’re seeing more on-screen sensuality nowadays but progress remains maddeningly incremental. You can’t help but wonder what’s taking them so long when “Secretary” made it all look so easy.

Cheryl and Liam put on a united front at the Brit Awards and even divulged details about their kinky love life but it was a woman sat behind them, who caught viewers attention.
When host Jack Whitehall chatted to the couple about their personal life, viewers at home couldn’t help but notice a woman pulling hilarious faces behind them.
The confident brunette stole the show when she pretended to apply lip gloss before winking at the camera and mouthing the words “call me”.
Her antics had viewers in a fit of laughter, with many taking to Twitter to point out that she had overshadowed the couple’s shock revelation.
One wrote: “I don’t know about you but the already very sozzled girl in the background of that Cheryl and Liam chat just made that segment for me.” (sic)
Another added: “I can’t decide who was #LifeGoals: The woman behind Liam and Cheryl or Liam and Cheryl.”
A third joked: “Let’s face it… the mystery drunk woman stole the show tonight,” while a fourth tweeted: “Mad bird in the background has made the night.”
However, the mystery joker was, in fact, Este Haim, who plays guitar in the girl band Haim. Her goofy behaviour had her fellow band mates giggling away in the background.
During Cheryl and Liam’s interview, the pair spoke candidly about their relationship, young son and sex life.
Asked by Jack about their date night, Liam replied: “It’s gone great so far.”
Jack then went on to talk about Liam’s upcoming Fifty Shades performance with pop princess and fellow Brit Rita Ora.
In a bid to find out more about the famous couple’s life, he asked: “It sounds pretty saucy. Is there a safe word?”
The One Direction star, 24, pointed to his girlfriend Cheryl, 34, before cheekily replying: “She knows!”
“Don’t stop,” Cheryl offered, causing her beau and the presenter to look a little hot under the collar with her racy hint.
Earlier, Cheryl put separation rumours to bed when she gave Liam a tender kiss on the cheek as they walked the red carpet.
Liam, who was nominated for the British Single award for his song Strip That Down ft. Quake, lost out on a trophy.
He was beaten by Rag’N’Bone Man, who has the smash hit Human, they faced tough competition from the likes of Ed Sheehan, Dua Lipa and Calvin Harris.
Elsewhere on the night, Kendrick Lamar was hit with technical difficulties when he took to the stage to perform his track New Freezer.
It’s clear from the very beginning of director Nicolas Pesce’s Piercing that he wants us on edge. He opens with a shot of a new father Reed (Christopher Abbott) standing over his infant son with an ice pick just inches from the child’s face. Reed snaps himself out of what seems like a trance and finishes packing for what he tells his wife (Laia Costa) is a business trip but is, in fact, a carefully planned and well-rehearsed killing of a total stranger, complete with a murder kit that we get to know well over the course of the film.
Based on the popular ’90s novel by Ry? Murakami (who also wrote the source novel for Takashi Miike’s Audition) and adapted by Pesce (The Eyes of My Mother), Piercing begins as what appears to be a cut-and-dry exploration of the obsessive behavior of a psychopath. But things evolves into something much more alluring and curious as both killer and victim prove to have a shared background of pain and abuse that opens up the possibility that they may become more like kindred spirits or even partners in the game of hurting each other.
The would-be victim here is a wasted prostitute named Jackie (Mia Wasikowska), who finds a way to be both intriguing and unpredictable in a way Reed did not anticipate. Before he summons her from an escort service, Reed unpacks his killing implements and moves through his hotel room, rehearsing every choreographed moment of Jackie’s death like it were a modern dance that combines small talk, erasing fingerprints, a relaxing drink, the suggestion of light S&M, knocking her out with chloroform, and stabbing her jugular with the ice pick. Perhaps even more disturbing than that, Reed also practices cutting her body into more manageable pieces in the bathtub, complete with an unnerving sound effects accompaniment.
When Jackie arrives, she presents herself as a loose cannon to Reed, whose buttoned-up demeanor might make American Psycho’s Patrick Bateman uncomfortable. And the more she throws off his planning, the more he begins to unravel. She’s messy and impossible to control (which may explain why having a newborn in his life may have set him on edge), but she’s also powerful, possessing the kind of strength that often comes from a lifetime’s worth of fighting back.
It’s my understanding that the novel makes this entangled relationship and their damaged pasts more explicit while Peace’s reworking only gives us a late-film flashback into Reed’s childhood that is both unnecessary and more than a little distracting. In no way a detriment to the movie, the filmmaker seems more fascinating by the power dynamic between Reed and Jackie, which is in almost constant flux. But as each party wrestles—both physically and psychologically—with the other for dominance, the two actually grow closer as they start to understand that shared pain might be their greatest aphrodisiac.
Piercing comes courtesy of the impressive BorderLine Films, a collective founded by Josh Mond, Sean Durkin, and Antonio Campos (all of whom are credited producers), which has spawned such well-received indie hits Martha Marcy May Marlene, James White (also starring Abbott), Christine, and Pesce’s The Eyes of My Mother. There seems to have been a concerted effort among these titles to tackle familiar subject in unfamiliar ways, and Piercing is no different. The film braids horror elements with dark humor, trippy visuals (cinematographer Zachary Galler’s work here is stunning and inventive), a twisted romance, and an inversion of the traditional and tired stalker/victim motif.
There’s never a moment in Piercing where Reed feels more dangerous than Jackie, and that’s entirely due to Wasikowska’s live-wire performance in which she toys with her would-be captor’s expectations. She’s an outdoor animal trapped inside with a man attempting to tame the untamable, and he’s a man who hates the unpredictable and other things that he can’t control. In those moments in the story when Jackie is solidly in control, Reed is in hell. It doesn’t help that a certain portion of what Reed sees and experiences might be more a product of his fractured psyche.
There are brief moments when the pair are forced into the outside world and must interact with more stable individuals, but Piercing works best as a two-person study of kinky fetishists left to their own whacked-out devices. With a running time that barely crosses 80 minutes, the film feels like an early draft of something worthy of deeper examination. Anything resembling background about Jackie would have been welcome and helpful in deepening our understanding of her behavior. And while I certainly am a firm proponent that nothing is scarier than the unknown, getting at bit into a character’s motivations only makes us care about their fate more. Again, it’s a testament to Wasikowska’s acting that we have even a passing interest in Jackie’s history and mental state.
Abbott continues to provide proof that he is one of the finest actors in his age group, displaying a range of performances in the last few years that makes it a genuine treat to see what he brings to each new part. He seems almost desperate not to repeat himself from role to role, and Reed is a bundle of insecurities wearing an ill-fitting killer’s mask.
Despite the dominating presence of a prostitute character, Piercing largely skirts the issue of whether either of these deranged folks is getting turned on by any of this. There’s no denying that the line between sex and violence is blurred for these people, almost beyond distinction, but Pesce has some difficulty capturing that in a way the audience can embrace and comprehend. The performances pull this one across the finish line convincingly and makes some truly demented behavior translate into surprisingly mainstream entertainment.

Strictly Come Dancing‘s Ruth was chatting about bagging the Lottery jackpot with Rylan Clark, when the latter revealed that he would sleep with the 57-year-old if she won tonight’s £168 million prize.
With her husband sitting next to her, Ruth was quick to clarify: “We would actually only sleep,” as Rylan, 28, confirmed: “That is literally it.”
However, it didn’t stop Eamonn popping his two-pennies in, stunning the pair: “It’s all that training, Rylan. She’s fit for nothing else these days!”
Quickly moving on to matter’s of Ruth’s appearance on the BBC competition, Rylan complimented the This Morning host.
“I know cameras have got the front view, but I’ve got the side view and you’re looking very well,” he gushed.
Ruth cooly replied: “It’s all this, it’s the dancing – everything is core!”
Elsewhere on This Morning, the presenting duo were in meltdown over a shocking birth.
The pair were debuting this year’s hottest Christmas toy, Hatchimals, when the gadgets actually produced two sets of twins.
This Morning airs weekdays on ITV from 10.30am.
Before it all went 50 shades of grey, Paddy (played by Dominic Brunt) had taken Marlon Dingle’s (Mark Charnock) former date Lindsey out for a calm meal in the Woolpack.
But things soon took an erotic turn when Paddy decided to take Lindsey to his vet practice for some quality alone time.
As Paddy said some medical definitions to his date, Lindsey became all hot and bothered and admitted to him: “You’re dead sexy when you say that, I love medical words.”
The flustered brunette then made a move on Paddy and grabbed a dog collar to tie him to a rabbit cage.
As he stood with his arms attached to the cage, Lindsey also blindfolded the soap favourite who thought he was in for a fun night.
However, things turned sour when Lindsey went through his phone and found he had sent Marlon a picture of the two of them together to wind him up.
And the hilarity didn’t end there as when she abandoned him still tied to the cage, Paddy proceeded to drink from the rabbit’s animal water bottle.
Fans of the ITV soap immediately flocked to Twitter to share their comments on the amusing scene.
One person wrote: “Paddy tied to a cage by a dog collar, drinking the water for the rabbit, just the laugh I needed.”
Another said: “Paddy’s found himself in quite a dilemma! At least he has the rabbit’s water bottle to keep him hydrated. #Emmerdale.”
“50 shades of Paddy Kirk #Emmerdale,” joked a viewer, while a third added: “Ooh, Paddy! Get in there. LOL! #Emmerdale.”
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from the sixth episode of season three of Poldark.
In perhaps one of the most bizarre scenes ever in the period drama, reprehensible vicar Reverend Whitworth (played by Christian Brassington) was seen suckling on the toes of a prostitute during a visit to a brothel.
It appeared that he had an intense foot fetish and was deeply aroused by putting toes in his mouth.
In fact, the reverend went so far as to see how much of the foot he could fit into his mouth as he opened up wide.
Viewers were revolted by the scenes playing out on their screens and flocked to social media to express their disgust.
One person said: “The vicar is revolting #poldark”
While a second person wrote on Twitter: “#Poldark Oh. Dear. God. Toe sucking. I feel sick.”
“I AM GOING TO BE SICK #POLDARK,” a third added with dismay.
During the stomach-churning scene, the less-than-holy vicar was seen discussing his upcoming nuptials with a prostitute whose toes he was sucking.
Sadly, by the end of the instalment Morwenna Chynoweth (Ellise Chappell) was forcibly wed to Reverend Whitworth in order to save the life of Drake Carne (Harry Richardson).
However, judging by the preview from next week’s episode, things will not bode well for the couple after he starts abusing her.
On top of that there are more hints that evil social climber George Warleggan (Jack Farthing) will learn about his wife Elizabeth’s (Heida Reed) dalliance with his sworn enemy Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner).
It also looks like Ross and Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) could be in trouble after Hugh Armitage (Josh Whitehouse) pays her a considerable amount of attention at a social event.
Poldark airs on BBC One on Sundays at 9pm.
The 44-year-old actor is back on TV screens playing Michael Scofield after an eight-year long break.
And he was close to using his character’s jail breaking skills after he was cornered with a pair of handcuffs.
Whilst out grabbing his daily caffeine fix, Wentworth revealed he was accosted by a fan.
“I had a fan stake me out at a Starbucks. They knew that was the one that I went to almost every day,” he told Guilty Pleasures.
He added: “They had gifts for me; one of which was a pair of handcuffs. That was certainly a little suggestive.”
Since his debut in the hit FOX series in 2005, the star still insists on doing his own stunts.
He continued: “I try to do as much of the action as I possibly can.
“Michael is not a superhero, not physically. I like the fact that I might not be able to execute that stunt perfectly, because you’ll see it on camera and you’ll see that Michael is not necessarily a force to be reckoned with from the neck down.”
Prison Break’s first episode since its eight-year hiatus got off to an explosive start after Michael was found very much alive in a Yemeni prison but now goes by the name Kaniel Outis, a renowned terrorist with links to ISIL.
And Wentworth previously explained how Michael’s escape will be very difficult as they face a bigger problem trying to get out of the country.
“I think not only do we have Michael up to his usual unexpected seat-of-your-pants shenanigans, but their escape from prison is tied in directly with and happening simultaneous to the fall of a country,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
“Once they’ve broken out of that prison, they find themselves in a different kind of prison — the country itself is what they need to escape from. It’s no easy task.”
Despite only just returning after a lengthy period, the show’s creator admitted he doesn’t plan on doing another season.
Prison Break airs on FOX UK on Mondays at 9pm.
Politicians and sex scandals go together like peanut butter and jelly, but one Arizona gubernatorial candidate is trying to break the mold. Noah Dyer, running on a platform of honesty, has revealed all the details of his private life online.
Known as “Noé,” he’s the first Democrat to announce his candidacy for the 2018 Arizona governorship, where he will take on incumbent Republican Governor Doug Ducey.
Tired of “cleverly disclosed scandals that come out of the woodwork in the midst of campaigns mainly serve to divert and distract away from meaningful dialogue,” the 36 year old says on his website that he wants to have a real conversation with the people of Arizona. To do so, he revealed all the saucy details of his sex life in a section aptly titled “Scandal and Controversy.”
“Noah has had both deep and casual sexual experiences with all kinds of women. He is an advocate of open relationships,” the site reads.
“He’s had group sex and sex with married women. He has sent and received intimate texts and pictures, and occasionally recorded video during sex.”

A former teacher and marketing entrepreneur, Dyer doesn’t stop there, adding that he “has always been forthright with his partners. All of his relationships have been legal and consensual, never coercive, or abusive, and he condemns such behavior.”
“Noah is unapologetic about his sexual choices, and wishes others the same safety and confidence as they express themselves.”
Dyer’s honest insight into this life wasn’t all about the bedroom. The would-be governor has also revealed that he is divorced, heavily indebted due to student loans, pro-immigration, and, following the revelations of Edward Snowden, is a privacy advocate who once proposed to live his entire life on camera for a period of one year, but failed to meet his Kickstarter target.
The 57-year-old presenter appeared on her ITV show wearing a dark pink boucle-style dress, and teamed the outfit with a pair of black patent knee high boots with black tights.
While the dress flattered Lorraine’s slim physique, it was the boots which stole all the glory.
Fans of the Lorraine show took to Twitter to compliment her on her “kinky” choice.
One Twitter user suggested her footwear choice was down to a segment on the new Fifity Shades film.
“Are you heading to a Fifty Shades Darker viewing when you’re finished?” they asked
Another said: “Looking hot in those boots this morning.”
Others put Lorraine forward for a style award.
One person said: “Surely @ITVLorraine should get an award for being the most stylish person on tv. Love her outfits.”
