You knew Kinect peripherals weren’t long for this world when Microsoft stopped producing the Kinect in October, but it’s still a sad day. The company has stopped making the Xbox Kinect Adapter that lets Xbox One S, Xbox One X and Windows PC users attach the depth-sensing camera without the presence of the original Xbox One’s proprietary port. Microsoft wants to focus its efforts on “higher fan-requested gaming accessories,” a spokesperson told Polygon. In short: there wasn’t exactly rampant demand for an adapter to support a peripheral that had effectively been declared dead.

As it stands, many of those who wanted the adapter already have it. Microsoft gave the adapter away for free for 8 months after the launch of the Xbox One S, and started selling it in April for $ 40. And if it wasn’t already clear that you had to hurry to get one, major retailers like Amazon and Microsoft itself have listed the adapter as out of stock for months.

This still creates issues for Kinect fans who want to keep using the pioneering device and aren’t content to settle for a headset or a USB webcam. Unless you can keep a first-generation Xbox One hanging around, you’ll either have to find the adapter at a reseller or score a used example on an auction site. And if none of those are options (such as for PC-based Kinect users)… well, you’re stuck. There hasn’t exactly been an abundance of Kinect-ready software to justify the adapter (though one did just arrive a few weeks ago), but this still hurts if you wanted your Kinect sensor to remain relevant for a little while longer.

Microsoft is no longer building any Kinect devices for consoles or PCs, writes Fast Co. Design. Since their 2010 introduction on the Xbox 360 and through major updates for Xbox One and PC, the sensors combined a depth-sensing camera, a regular video camera, and a microphone array into a device that Microsoft hoped would usher in a new wave of games and apps packed with voice and motion-based controls. Microsoft’s own marketing promised gamers that they themselves would be the controller.

With Kinect, Microsoft appeared to be leading the tech world with a rich mix of voice and motion controls that nobody else could match, all neatly packaged into a consumer-friendly box.

But a world of compelling voice and motion games never really materialized, so a device that once held such promise—as a box in your living room that you talk to; as a showcase of machine vision; as a basis for complex multimodal input mixing controllers, movement, and voice—is being killed off after never quite living up to the potential we felt it had. And as someone who still uses a Kinect every single day, I’m more than a little saddened.

Microsoft is no longer making the Kinect, as reported by Co.Design. The motion-sensing and voice-recognizing device for Xbox One and Windows will disappear from store shelves once the current stock runs out.

Microsoft once touted Kinect as an essential component of the Xbox One. Now, as the company prepares to launch the Xbox One X, 4K resolutions and hardware that tops its competitors are the new focus.

The first Kinect launched as a peripheral for the Xbox 360 in 2010. It helped give the aging console some new life with its motion-based games, and its easy-to-understand, controller-less gameplay made it appealing to a casual crowd. But the technology did have problems. It required a large amount of space in front of the TV in order to work, and other electronic devices and a lack of lighting could easily interfere with the system.

Leading up to the launch of the Xbox One, Microsoft planned to make the Kinect a required part of the machine. Microsoft originally positioned the Xbox One as an “all-in-one entertainment device” that could play games, video and music apps, and give you direct access to cable TV. The Kinect was to be an integral part of the plan with its voice commands, hand gestures, and face-recognition abilities.

Microsoft eventually backed down from requiring the Kinect to be plugged into the system at all times, but all original Xbox Ones still came bundled with the device when it launched in 2013. This brought the console’s price up to $ 500, $ 100 more expensive than the PlayStation 4, which also launched that year.

The new Kinect, despite its improved hardware, did not receive much love from gamers. Motion and voice commands in games felt tacked on, and the original novelty of the Kinect had faded. The extra cost it brought to the system was one of the factors that helped the PlayStation 4 jump into an early lead in the new console war.

Starting in 2014, Microsoft started selling a $ 400 version of the Xbox One that did not come with a Kinect. The device became less of a talking point for the company, until Microsoft never mentioned it at all. If Kinects appeared in the news at all, it was because of non-gaming applications and experiments.

When your fancy high-tech tools aren’t suited for the job, it’s time to call the tinkers. The Field Museum of Natural History had a certain famous Tyrannosaurus rex skull they wanted examined with 3D imaging systems, but their dental scanners couldn’t fit around the dinosaur’s massive jaw. They contacted MIT Media Lab’s Camera Culture group, which scanned the whole five-foot fossil with a $ 150 makeshift setup featuring a Microsoft Kinect.

While the Kinect’s resolution tops out at 500 micrometers, it only costs $ 100, compared to thousands of dollars for high-end 3D imaging systems that get down to 50 or 100 micrometers. Still, it was precise enough to scan the skull so scientists can look closer at mysterious holes in the jaw.

There’s an easy joke here about using a dinosaur to scan a dinosaur: After reactive outcry following some of Microsoft’s Kinect ambitions when the Xbox One launched back in 2013, the gaming titan has slowly shut down the motion-capture camera system. Heck, after only two third-party Kinect-playable games came out in 2016, the developer of one of them (the brilliant Fru) told Engadget at this year’s E3 that we shouldn’t expect many more games to use the peripheral.

Which is a shame, given how versatile it is: From Nine Inch Nails shows to trying on clothes, artists and technologists have found novel uses for the aging device. But outside hacker spaces, the camera attachment that once came standard with every Xbox sold rarely appears, except occasionally playing second fiddle to today’s sexy tech, VR.
