We shouldn’t have to open with this, but here goes: the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not coming to an end anytime soon. And yet, that seems to be the message the internet has taken from recent quotes by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, eventually pulling Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn into the muck so he could also confirm that no, one of the most massively successful and lucrative movie series of the young century is not coming to an end. Of course not. Duh.

But Gunn did tease that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will kickstart the “new story” that is coming down the pipeline. So that’s something.

Let’s start with the source of the mess: an excerpt from an Uproxx interview with Kevin Feige. The mastermind of the MCU explained what he has explained before: Avengers: Infinity War and the untiled fourth Avengers movie will build to a climax for the series thus far:

“Well, all I’ll say is the films we are working on now – which take us through to the Avengers Untitled in May of 19 – that’s really all we are focusing on. And we are focusing on bringing, by that point, an unprecedented, 22-movie, continuous shared fictional narrative to a conclusion in a satisfying way.”

What Feige is saying here is that the current storyline for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the tale of the Avengers coming together and discovering the Infinity Stones and facing off against the evil Thanos, is wrapping up (along with a bunch of actors’ contracts). That means a fresh start with a fresh story is needed. A fresh start with actors with fresh contracts who won’t have the leverage to demand a few extra zeroes in their paychecks. In short, the next few movies will wipe the dry erase board clean, leaving room for the next story to be born.

Still, the word “conclusion” freaked out the ever-skittish internet and James Gunn addressed the topic on Twitter, kindly asking people to actually read the quotes in context before dropping his little Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 nugget:

Of course, we’ve heard similar things from James Gunn before. A few months back, he revealed that the third Guardians movie would take place in the wake of the universe-shattering Avengers movies and would lay the groundwork for the major storyline that ties the next batch of Marvel movies together:

“One of the things I’m doing with creating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it will take place after the next two Avengers movies and it will help to set up the next 10, 20 years of Marvel movies. It’s going to really expand the cosmic universe. We’re going to be setting up new characters. It will be the last movie of this version of Guardians of the Galaxy.”

If Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is intended to build the foundation for the next decade-plus of Marvel movies (which would be a smart move because audiences seem ready to follow those characters anywhere), our prediction that the third film will arrive in the summer of 2020 starts to feel a little more concrete. After all, Avengers 4 arrives on May 3, 2019 – whatever movie comes out the next year is going to have to sort through a lot of wreckage and get building.

To be fair to the people who misunderstood Feige’s initial quotes, Marvel Studios has been a little more quiet than usual. As noted in the original Uproxx interview, Feige once got on a stage and announced the entirety of Phase 3 is one fell swoop. They’ve been cagey about titles beyond Avengers 4 since then and the general mood has been somewhat…well, final. Feige admits that the event may have adjusted expectations of fans:

“I also think that was a particular event to really announce and showcase Phase Three and I guess set up the expectation of doing something like that every few years. But the notion we are sitting here talking and we have, what, six films yet to be released? That’s more than almost any other single production entity in town has on the docket. That should be enough.”

Okay. Here’s the short version: the Marvel Cinematic Universe is alive and well and won’t end for the foreseeable future; Marvel Studios hasn’t announced the next few years worth of titles because they probably want to protect the secrets of Avengers 4; the only thing we know for sure is that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will take place after this all clears and will be like the new Iron Man – the movie charged with rebuilding and setting the new rules.

Cool? Cool.

We could be getting a third Trainspotting film, though it wouldn’t necessarily be called T3, nor even be directed by Danny Boyle. But the T2: Trainspotting director says there’s potential for a Trainspotting extended universe if volatile, fan-favorite character Begbie (Robert Carlyle) gets a spin-off movie.

The Trainspotting movies are based on the novels by Irvine Welsh, whose first novel, Trainspotting, was the basis for Boyle’s 1996 cult hit starring Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner and Carlyle as a group of friends and heroin addicts. The sequel out this year is based on Welsh’s follow-up novel, Porno.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Boyle said that he’d like to see a spin-off movie centered on Carlyle’s Begbie, the violent and unhinged character who sometimes acts as antagonist to McGregor’s character, Mark “Rent” Renton. And Begbie already has a whole rich backstory detailing his life with his family as a sculptor in Calfornia, provided by Welsh in the recently released book, The Blade Artist:

“It’s like a solo book. I think Bobby [Carlyle] would love to do that because it’s an interesting twist on the character. That may be made into a film. You couldn’t call it T3 because although some of the other characters come into it, they’re only featured just momentarily. It’s a solo story. You could call that a spinoff. … Blade Artist is a great read.”

But Boyle couldn’t say whether he would direct the standalone movie himself, especially with Begbie’s fate in T2. “My affection is toward all four of them,” Boyle said. “I always saw it as an ensemble movie, so I’m still very much in that mode.”

Carlyle, however, wasn’t against the idea of reprising his role as Begbie. “We’ve been talking about that, I am up for doing it. So maybe we ain’t seen the end of Begbie just yet,” he told reporters at T2‘s Edinburgh premiere, according to The Guardian.

A Trainspotting Cinematic Universe?

Boyle told The Hollywood Reporter that if any director did want to tackle a Begbie prequel, the wealth of stories from Welsh’s novels is enough to create their own cinematic universe:

“Irvine Welsh returns to these characters in many different ways, in different novels. They appear as casual characters in each others’ stories; we call it Irving’s little Marvel universe.”

With virtually every franchise getting a cinematic universe (I’m looking at you, Universal Monsters; what are you, a theme park?), it may be refreshing to have an extended franchise based on a bunch of Scottish drug addicts just trying to get by. I say this in all seriousness. TriStar Pictures, choose life. Choose a Trainspotting spin-off series.

Steven Spielberg’s 1991 fantasy sequel Hook is one of the filmmaker’s easier targets. Spielberg himself as admitted to being disappointed in the film, but plenty who grew up with the Peter Pan follow-up still have a special place in their heart for their film. Hell, I’m one of them. I even have a ticket from one of Robin Williams’ stand-up shows and I had him sign it, “Bangarang!” The question is, how many people like me are interested in seeing a Hook prequel?

Well, Hook co-star Dante Basco, who played the mohawked Lost Boy leader named Rufio, is hoping there are enough fans of the original movie to help support a Kickstarter for a short film that shows us who Rufio was before he went to Neverland. It’s basically Hook Origins: Rufio, but the film is called Bangarang, and you can find out more about it below.

The Hook prequel is being executive produced by Dante Basco (though it won’t star him since he’s a little too old for the role now), and written and directed by Jonah Feingold, who is also working on a Peter Pan feature film project called Wendy, starring Pitch Perfect actress Brittany Snow. Here are the two introducing us to their idea for the movie:

Bangarang is described as a contemporary modern-day story about a young Filipino kid named Roofus who grows up on the wrong side of the tracks and ends up going to Neverland and becoming the leader of The Lost Boys. Here’s a slightly more detailed description from the Kickstarter campaign page:

Roofus is a 13-year-old kid who is destined to be more than he is. After his mother is forced to put him into a foster home, he and his rag-tag group of best friends – a Jamaican boy named Julani and a bright-eyed latina force of nature named Ella – find a way for Roofus to escape his ill fate, find his happy thought and fulfill his destiny.

The story has been reverse engineered from what was set-up in Hook. We answer all the questions you’ve ever wondered — How and why is Rufio the leader of the Lost Boys? Where does “bangarang” come from? And of course, how he gets the mohawk.

The biggest question I have based on the information provided is how the story can be set in modern day, but also be a prequel to Hook. The original movie takes place in 1991, the year it was released. But how can young Roofus, who will eventually become Rufio, be younger in a modern day setting, but then suddenly older in Neverland at the time when Peter Banning arrives 26 years in the past? The easy answer is that Neverland exists outside of the normal rules of time, though the explanation may still be a little tricky to pull off. Maybe that will be addressed in the movie.

The producers need $ 30,o00 to make the short film that they have in mind, but they also note that if they happen to reach $ 200,000, they’ll make a feature film version instead. I’m not sure how they’ll expand an idea that they intended for a short into a feature film, but there you go.

Plus, if you happen to know or have any kids who might want to be part of this project, they’re having an open casting call for the lead roles. They even have some of the audition sides for you to check out that appear to be pages from the actual script.

The struggling Premier League champions were held 1-1 in 90 minutes by the Championship Rams in their FA Cup fourth-round replay, after King’s opener was cancelled out by Abdoul Camara.

But Wilfred Ndidi and Demarai Gray sealed victory in extra-time. “It has been a tough few weeks and we’ve been getting a lot of criticism,” said King. “Tonight we showed the fight we have in the squad.”

Leicester could fall into the bottom three if results go against them this weekend, with the Foxes travelling to Swansea on Sunday. 

And King added: “It was important to get a win tonight to try and kickstart some form to take into the league. 

“We have 14 massive games left in the league but now we are through in a couple of rounds of the cup. Why can’t we write another story in that?”

Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri, whose side travel to Millwall for the fifth round on February 18, could not disguise his relief after months of poor league results and with his club giving him the dreaded vote of confidence this week.

“In this moment everything goes wrong – but tonight one thing went right. Derby played good football and we won. This is what we needed and I wanted,” he said.

“We want to do well in all competitions. We want to go forward in the FA Cup. The Premier League is not so good but we have to stay in the Premier League. This fresh air is good for the players.”

Leicester host Derby in their FA Cup fourth round replay with the winners earning a trip to League One outfit Millwall.

They then go to Swansea, who are only below the Foxes on goal difference, on Sunday still looking for a top flight away win this season.

Claudio Ranieri’s side are just a point above the Premier League relegation zone after Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester United.

It was their fourth straight loss – with Leicester yet to score a league goal in 2017 – and Simpson hopes a cup win will prepare them for their trip to the Liberty Stadium on Sunday. 

“Sunday is big, I get that, but I want to play Wednesday – we need a win,” Simpson said.

“I know it is not the league but we need a win. Maybe Wednesday can help with our confidence. It is a big game.

“I don’t think you should write it off because of what is going on in the league. United are a good team, but maybe Wednesday is what we need at home against Derby to kick us on.”
