AT&T is terminating the broadband service of more than a dozen customers who were accused multiple times of copyright infringement, according to a report by Axios today.
“It’s the first time AT&T has discontinued customer service over piracy allegations since having shaped its own piracy policies last year, which is significant given it just became one of America’s major media companies [with the purchase of Time Warner],” Axios wrote.
Axios’ report is based partly on anonymous sources, but AT&T also confirmed the news in official statements to Axios and Ars. The allegedly pirating customers will receive their disconnection notices within a week or so; each one already “received at least nine separate notifications with allegations of copyright infringement from content owners,” Axios wrote.

Enlarge / The jewel wasp administers two stings: one to paralyze the legs, the other to make the roach her zombie slave. (credit: Ken Catania/Vanderbilt University)
If you ever want to witness just how horrifyingly “red in tooth and claw” nature can be, you only have to look to the emerald jewel wasp. The female of the species is known for stinging unsuspecting cockroaches with a nasty venom that turns the roach into her docile slave. That way she can lay her eggs in the still-living roach and bury it alive, ensuring her offspring have something to eat when they hatch. Even if you don’t like cockroaches, it’s a pretty gruesome fate—they become the walking dead.
But it turns out that the poor roach is not without defenses of its own, according to a new paper in Brain, Behavior and Evolution with the rather puckish title, “How Not To Be Turned Into a Zombie.” Roaches can use their hard, spiky legs as weapons, even delivering wide sweeping kicks to ward off an attacking jewel wasp. It’s the most detailed study yet of how roaches fight off attacks to turn them into insectoid zombies.
The author, Vanderbilt University’s Ken Catania, has a knack for creatively studying the aggressive behavior of various creatures; his specialty is predator/prey interactions. Back in 2016, he experimentally verified naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt’s 19th-century account of electric eels in Venezuela aggressively leaping up and stunning horses with a series of high-voltage discharges. (Part of that experiment involved LED lights mounted on a fake alligator head, attached with strips of conductive tape, to better visualize those discharges. Because of course it did.)

Ellen Marandola had booked £283 tickets to fly to the Italian island on Friday 3 August but, at the gate, she was told her seat was broken and that she would have to wait in case there were any no-shows, Marandola told the Independent.
EasyJet later said that in fact, the broken seat belonged to another flier but that the passenger assigned to that seat had been moved into Marandola’s place.
The airline chose to offload Marandola rather than the passenger in 7A as she was deemed to be the last person to check in to the flight at the airport.
Under European air passengers’ rights rules, airline staff must ask for volunteers before they can deny someone boarding against their will in such a situation as this.
EasyJet says that an announcement was made at the gate asking for volunteers to be offloaded but Marandola maintains she was not aware of such a call.
The Imperial College London student also says that the airline did not discuss compensation with her, although easyJet denies this.
EasyJet told Express.co.uk: “easyJet is sorry that Ms Marandola was not able to travel the flight to Cagliari on 3 August. This was due to one seat on the aircraft being unusable and all other seats being used.
“As Ms Marandola was the last passenger to check in at the airport, we, unfortunately, could not accommodate her on this flight.
“Our customer service team at the airport offered alternative flight options to her, including with other airlines. However, Ms Marandola told them that she did not want to take one of these flights. We also explained the compensation she would be entitled to and will be contacting her to arrange this.
“We would like to apologise to Ms Marandola that she was not able to travel on this flight.”
Bumping from a flight is when some passengers may be asked or forced to give up their place on a flight. It is also called ‘denied boarding’ and is completely legal.
It can also happen if airlines overbook a flight and everyone turns up or they use a smaller aircraft than planned.
Under EU flight regulations if you are bumped from a flight you have certain rights as long as you are departing from an EU airport and operated by any airline or arriving at an EU airport and operated by an EU airline.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA): “If you are bumped without your agreement, you are entitled to compensation, as long as you checked-in for your flight on time.”
Depending on the length of your flight and the timings of the alternative flight you are offered, compensation can range from €125 to €600 (£111 to £535).
Whether you volunteer or moved to be bumped from a flight, your airline must let you choose between two options: choose an alternative flight or review a refund.
If the former, the airline must offer you an alternative flight which best suits your needs.
“Your airline must also provide care and assistance while you wait for the flight,” says the CAA. “This means food, drink, communications and accommodation if you stay overnight.”
When it comes to claiming compensation, the CAA advises passengers to understand their right before contacting the airline to avoid wasting your time.
If you believe you have a case, you should contact your airline directly and put a claim in – providing as much information as you can. It can take some time for airline stop process claims, however.
Last month an easyJet passenger complained after her hold luggage was returned to her so badly damaged it looked as though something had exploded.

The Tank Biathlon World Championship, a massive, breathtaking military race, kicked off after the opening of the large-scale International Army Games in the Moscow region. The competition will be held in seven countries.
Teams from over 20 countries, including Russia, China, India, Syria and Iran are expected to take part in the tank biathlon championship, held for the sixth time ever. The tank contest follows the rules of a classic biathlon, with each vehicle aiming to cover around 15 kilometers in the shortest time possible while shooting at various targets, which include models of tanks, helicopters and the crews of rocket-propelled grenade launchers.
Russian army officials initially came up with the idea to adapt the popular winter sport into a military competition in 2013. While a tank biathlon may sound like a joke, it has quickly caught on and has served as a good test of both military equipment and crew skills.
All of the military teams participating in the Biathlon this year will use Russian-made T-72B3 main battle tanks, provided by the Russian military. China is the only exception, as its military brought their own Type 96A tanks. The Belarus team, meanwhile, will race in their own T-72 mod.
During the competition, the tank teams are assigned various colors. During the first round Saturday, the Chinese team playing in red challenged crews from Kazakhstan using blue tanks, Uganda with the green ones and Kuwaiti crews in the yellow war machines. The Chinese won the first race.
This year, four new national teams will be taking part in the tank biathlon: Vietnam, Myanmar, Syria and South Africa. The competition is now also part of a bigger military championship – the International Army Games, which are being held for the fourth time.
Since the first official games in 2015, which saw 17 competing nations, the number of competitors and disciplines has almost doubled. For two weeks, almost 200 teams from 33 countries representing almost all corners of the world would compete in 28 contests, which, apart from the tank biathlon, also include such challenges as Aviadarts, in which hypersonic planes compete to hit ground targets; Ring of Elbrus, which forces teams of soldiers in full uniform to ascend to the 5,642-meter summit of Russia’s tallest mountain, and the Suvorov Onslaught, a contest for the APCs named after the famous Russian 18th century commander Aleksandr Suvorov.
The games started with an opening ceremony attended by the Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, the defense ministers of Azerbaijan, Belarus and Kazakhstan, as well as representatives of the General Staffs of six more nations, including Venezuela and Iran. Six countries, Algeria, Vietnam, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sudan and the Philippines are taking part in the games for the first time. As well as these participants, 17 more nations sent observers to the contest.
“Every year, the number of [competition] participants grows, its geographical borders expand and its program gets more complicated. One thing that remains unchanged, though, is the spirit of courage, nobility, fellowship and mutual assistance that prevails on the improvised battlefields,” Shoigu said, as he opened the Army Games.
The opening ceremony also involved a concert, which the performers and military orchestras from the nations hosting the competition took part in. It also included an impressive ‘tank ballet’ performance, which saw the heavy war machines moving with unparalleled precision as they performed various maneuvers synchronically to pieces of classical music. The international competition, which was initially hosted by Russia, is now held in seven countries, including China and Iran, and will last until August 11.

]]>The first game of the World Cup kicks off at 6 p.m. local time in the refurbished and freshly re-turfed Luzhniki Stadium on the Moscow River.
After years of weak economic growth caused in part by Western sanctions and deteriorating political relations with most NATO and European countries, Russia desperately wants to demonstrate that Western isolation failed to crush its spirit or lessen its ability to put on a great show with the whole world watching.

Canadian soccer mom Leticia Mandrier says her first impressions of the event and the country have surpassed her expectations.
"I am really pleasantly surprised," she told CBC News, as she watched her 11-year-old twins play in a youth soccer tournament in Moscow that's associated with the World Cup.
Her family, from the Montreal suburb of Ahuntsic, won an all-expenses-paid trip to take part in the event sponsored by Russian oil giant Gazprom.

This is Mandrier's first trip back to Moscow since living here as a child with her diplomat parents in the early 1990s.
"Downtown Moscow has changed a lot. It's very nice," she said.
"I have memories … of people, in general, not being very happy people. But they're friendly."
For the next month, Russia is expecting more than one million foreign visitors to fly into its airports, take free train trips to 11 World Cup host cities and drop more than $ 1.6 billion on hotels and other activities.

But the biggest boost to the country could come from the enhanced impression of Russia that all those visitors take home with them.
"People come to Russia, and they can see with their own eyes what we are doing and how Russians live," said Russian political scientist Andrei Kortunov, head of the Russian International Affairs Council think-tank.
"And it shows that we will not yield under pressure. We will survive, we will cope, we are optimistic and we are confident. That's the message."
Analyst Alexei Kortunov says he doesn't see the World Cup as a turning point in Russia's relations with the West, but it could make a positive difference. (Pascal Dumont/CBC)
With so many Russian cities hosting matches, and visa-free travel available for international visitors with game tickets, Kortunov says there's never been such an opportunity for one-on-one interactions between foreign visitors and Russians.
And the exchange is equally important for Russians, he says, who generally travel infrequently outside the country.
"We have seen lots of bad news about the West, about westerners and government societies. So for Russians, it's important to be exposed to people from other countries, to see there is no reason to consider them enemies."
Still, Kortunov says it's unrealistic to expect a single event — even one as large as the World Cup — to push either the Russian government, or governments in the West, to make major policy changes.
"We need much more to change the momentum in the relationship between Russia and the West," he said.
That much was clear last week when U.S. President Donald Trump proposed inviting Russia to rejoin the G7. His colleagues in the group of the world's most powerful economies rejected the idea, arguing Putin hasn't changed his antagonizing ways since the group booted Russia over its annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Nonetheless, Russian state TV is focused on exploring what first-time visitors think of the country, devoting hours of programming to the topic.
In one recent segment, a Russian TV host took groups of French, Argentine, Brazilian and other tourists on a trip around Moscow, stopping to eat Russian pancakes and dance to Russian folk songs. At the end, they all joined hands and yelled, "We love Russia," as they jumped into the air.
Another report profiled journalists who are covering the World Cup.
"I was in Moscow 10 years ago," Egyptian cameraman Mohammed Al Salkhla told Russia's Channel One. "The city is unrecognizable. The streets are cleaned and very well maintained."

Indonesian photographer Pancha Sookani was effusive in his interview.
"Everyone must come to see this country for themselves and meet the people," Sookani said. "They are nothing like how they portray them to be overseas. I haven't met a rude or aggressive person yet."
Still, there's no shortage of critics who see a World Cup hosted by Russia as an abomination.
Most leaders from Western nations are avoiding the event.
Financier-turned-human rights activist Bill Browder accused British singer Robbie Williams, who is performing at tonight's opening ceremony, of "selling his soul" to Vladimir Putin.
Browder has been a ferocious Putin critic, and has pushed governments around the world, including Canada, to adopt anti-corruption legislation aimed at punishing members of Putin's regime.
On the eve of the tournament, the group Reporters Without Borders released a report condemning Putin's treatment of his opponents.
The report ranked Russia 148th out of 180 countries for press freedom, claiming more journalists are imprisoned in the country now than at any other time.
However, Putin has seemed pleased with how preparations for the tournament have gone. He released a video that features him welcoming visitors in English.
And yesterday, he thanked a gathering of hundreds of FIFA delegates for the help Russia has received to stage the event.
"I wanted to underline FIFA's commitment to the principle of sports without politics."

It all unfolded as Amanda Holden and Rylan took up the presenting duties today on ITV magazine show This Morning.
The Britain’s Got Talent judge was determined to show off her own unique talent after the pair had discussed opera-singing cake-eating act Sarah Llewllyn.
“It’s not that unique that act, I can do that every night at home,” Amanda announced.
Confessing she could do a headstand while eating cake, Amanda then set about doing so live on the set.
Tossing the pillow away that she’d been given for comfort, Amanda flung her legs up in the air as Rylan held up her skirt to protect her modesty.
The mother-of-two then tucked into a yellow cake with aplomb as she displayed her impressive talent while Rylan held her legs.
After a few seconds Rylan asked: “Do you wanna get down?”
But Amanda wasn’t having any of it: “No, I’m going to have one more bite.”
Clearly getting into the act, Amanda exclaimed: “Kick it to me! Kick the cake to me Rylan.”
Her co-host then booted the confection straight into Amanda’s face.
Aghast, Rylan questioned: “Are you alright? She’s fine.”
Amanda declared: “It’s really nice, it’s like a butter frosting.”
When the show returned from a advert break, Amanda announced she had been “sponged off” behind-the-scenes.
Although, she did take a moment to berate Rylan for the force of his kick.
She told Rylan: “You literally kicked the sponge in my face.”
Those watching at home were amused by the bizarre moment and took to Twitter to comment.
“Didn’t think I would ever see Rylan holding Amanda’s legs while eating cake upside down #ThisMorning,” one wrote.
While another exclaimed: “YESSSS AMANDA DO A HEADSTAND #ThisMorning.”
“Why am I watching Rylan push Amanda Holden’s face into a cake while she’s in a handstand #ThisMorning,” a third questioned.
“Amanda Holden doing a headstand while eating cake like a PRO #ThisMorning,” a fourth added.
This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV.
