I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! returned to ITV for a Saturday night instalment and those watching at home tuned in to see all twelve celebrity campmates take part in a Bushtucker Trial. Before that, viewers were shown footage from earlier that day and ask the Jailhouse Camp woke up to the sounds of the Australian outback, they also woke up to ants infesting their precious food recourses. And for Kate Garraway, who clearly hadn’t had enough sleep, she snapped at Andrew Maxwell when he suggested she remove the fruit.

It came as those in Jailhouse Camp were getting themselves ready for the day.

Together they were deciding what to have for breakfast and Andrew suggested: “Banana rice for breakfast anyone?”

“Banana rice for breakfast that’s fabulous!” Kate commented.

“I don’t think I can choke on banana rice,” the Irish comedian remarked in reference to the camel meat he choked on last night.

“That’s when you kick off,” the EastEnders star continued to explain.

Those watching at home then saw Andrew in the Bush Telegraph and he said: “I get hangry just before every meal. It turns out that’s just my trait. My wife did warn me.”

Back at camp, Kate and Jacqueline joked: “It goes between ‘chatter chatter chatter, lovely, lovely, lovely’ to ‘Kate get them out! The bananas! Get them out! There’s an ant!’”

However those watching at home were confused as to why they even had bananas in the jungle.

I’M A CELEBRITY…GET ME OUT OF HERE: TOP FACTS

Personal items

The celebrities wear jungle uniforms with snazzy red trousers and matching khaki shirts. But did you know they’re only allowed three pairs of underwear?

Of the few personal items allowed in camp, the stars can bring three sets of underwear and three sets of swimwear – everything else is provided.

Practice run

While it may look like a brand, spanking new camp each year it’s believed a handful of people stay in the camp ahead of the celebs’ arrival to check everything works correctly.

Fire – tick.

Dunny – tick.

Food stop

When the going gets tough, the campmates are given just beans and rice to survive on.

Despite this, you’ll be shocked at the sheer quantities of food they get through. In series 13 they got through 15kg bacon, 540 eggs, 7kg muesli, 70kg potatoes, 80kg beef, 60kg chicken, 50kg pork, 20kg fish, 3kg ham, 2kg salami, and 4kg burger patties.

Ant’s birthday

The Geordie BFFs celebrate Ant’s birthday in the jungle ever year. The Scorpio – born on 18 November – has celebrated his birthday Down Under every year since 2004.

This year will be the first not in the jungle for Ant.

Other countries

I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here is so popular other countries have taken on the programme as their own. Germany, France, India, Sweden, and Hungary to name just a few have all got their own version.

Single-beam laser becomes multi-beam laser by kicking electrons https://briefnews.eu/single-beam-laser-becomes-multi-beam-laser-by-kicking-electrons/ https://briefnews.eu/single-beam-laser-becomes-multi-beam-laser-by-kicking-electrons/#respond Wed, 05 Dec 2018 20:36:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/single-beam-laser-becomes-multi-beam-laser-by-kicking-electrons/

Most lasers are either friendly tabletop devices or so small that you don’t even notice them. But if you want to do something special like image the structure of a delicate protein, you need a very short wavelength and very high-power laser. That means a free electron laser (FEL).

I love FELs, but they’re expensive. A laser produces one beam, and that beam is usually limited to one or two users at a time. So competition for beam time at FELs is fierce. That may be about to change, though. An unexpected experimental result at the Linac Coherent Light Source may be the key to making multiple beams from a single FEL undulator line.

Enough gibberish

OK, time for some physics-to-almost-English translation. Let’s start with some FEL goodness.

Chiefs release star RB Kareem Hunt over video showing him shoving, kicking woman https://briefnews.eu/chiefs-release-star-rb-kareem-hunt-over-video-showing-him-shoving-kicking-woman/ https://briefnews.eu/chiefs-release-star-rb-kareem-hunt-over-video-showing-him-shoving-kicking-woman/#respond Sat, 01 Dec 2018 09:30:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chiefs-release-star-rb-kareem-hunt-over-video-showing-him-shoving-kicking-woman/ The Kansas City Chiefs released running back Kareem Hunt on Friday night after video surfaced that showed the NFL's reigning rushing champion knocking over and kicking a woman in a Cleveland hotel hallway in February.

The team issued a statement shortly after the NFL had placed Hunt on its Commissioner Exempt list that said the running back lied when asked about the incident by team officials. The team said "the video today confirms that fact. We are releasing Kareem immediately."

Hunt was at the Chiefs' facility earlier Friday in preparation for Sunday's trip to Oakland, but he was excused and sent home shortly after TMZ posted the video online. It shows Hunt being restrained several times by friends before pushing a woman to the ground, where he proceeds to kick her.

Police were called to the scene during the Feb. 10 incident. No charges were filed. The police did not respond to requests for comment Friday night.

"Earlier this year, we were made aware of an incident involving running back Kareem Hunt. At that time, the National Football League and law enforcement initiated investigations into the issue," the Chiefs said. "As part of our internal discussions with Kareem, several members of our management team spoke directly to him. Kareem was not truthful in those discussions."

NFL's domestic violence issues continue

The Chiefs and the NFL have been aware of Hunt's incident since it occurred, but much like the case involving former Ravens running back Ray Rice, the shocking video brought a new dimension to the case. It showed Hunt lunging toward a woman and several others in the hotel hallway, and the second-year pro being restrained several times before knocking two people down.

While no charges were filed from the altercation, two police reports were created. Hunt is listed as the suspect in one of them, and a woman, Abigail Ottinger, is the suspect in the other one.

Hunt also was involved in a June incident, according to TMZ, in which he allegedly punched a man at an Ohio resort. The man Hunt struck declined to press charges.

'I want to apologize for my actions"

"I want to apologize for my actions. I deeply regret what I did," Hunt said in a statement issued to several outlets shortly after he was released. "I hope to move on from this."

When asked about the incidents in training camp, Hunt said "I've learned from it." When asked to elaborate on what he learned, he replied: "Just be in the right place at the right time."

Hunt led the NFL in rushing as a rookie with 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns in helping Kansas City make the playoffs. He had run for 824 yards this season, with seven touchdowns passing and seven more receiving, in helping the Chiefs to a 9-2 start and a stranglehold on the AFC West.

Spencer Ware is expected to take over as the lead running back.

Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt was asked several times about Hunt's incidents in the off season, and he said that "young men are not always going to make the best decisions."

"We have a strong support system, both with the coaching staff and also our player development that works with young guys and talks to them about the situations that they want to be in," Hunt said during training camp. "Obviously he had a very big year on the field last year. I'm sure he learned some lessons this off season and hopefully won't be in those kind of situations in the future."

He won't be as a member of the Chiefs.

Domestic violence has been a major issue in the NFL in recent years, one that struck home in Kansas City in 2012 when Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend before killing himself at the team's practice facility. Belcher was later found to have suffered from CTE.

The most memorable incident came in 2014, when a video showed Rice knocking out his then-fiancée in an elevator in an Atlantic City hotel. Rice was originally suspended two games by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who later was heavily criticized for such a light penalty after the video was released.

Rice soon after was suspended indefinitely by the league. He won an appeal but was released by the Ravens, and the three-time Pro Bowl running back never returned to the NFL.

Last year, Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott was suspended for six games by Goodell after the league concluded following a yearlong investigation that he had several physical confrontations in the summer of 2016 with his girlfriend at the time.

The league has implemented a stronger domestic violence policy, but incidents have continued to make news. Just last weekend, the 49ers cut linebacker Reuben Foster when he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence — he has since signed with Washington but remains on the NFL's exempt list.

Reuben Foster, who was released by the San Francisco 49ers last week amid domestic violence allegations, was claimed by the Washington Redskins. (Marcio Jose Sanchez/The Associated Press)

Angela Rozmyn used to spend upwards of $ 2,000 a month on food for her family of three.

It seemed justified, she told Business Insider. They live in Seattle, where local and sustainable produce, high-quality meat, and craft beer often commands a higher price. Add in food delivery and last-minute trips to the grocery store and it’s easy to rack up a big bill, she said.

More than 20 countries have expelled Russian diplomats in retaliation for the poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal with nerve agent in Salisbury, southern England.

The nations joined Britain in blaming Russia for the attempted assassination on March 4, which was the first offensive use of nerve agent in Europe since World War II. Russia has repeatedly denied their involvement.

  • More than 50 toy suppliers, including Mattel and Lego, have objected to the retailer’s plan to close or sell all of its US stores.
  • Experts told Reuters that Toys R Us’ request to halt supplier payments of more than $ 450 million could cause many small toy makers to disappear.

Toys ‘R’ Us heads to U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Tuesday to defend its liquidation plan against an onslaught of objections from creditors, particularly suppliers demanding payment for thousands of toys ranging from Poopeez to Bratz.

More than 50 suppliers, including Barbie maker Mattel and Lego, have objected in some form to the proceedings by the storied toy retailer to shutter up to 735 U.S. stores and 30,000 jobs.

This Pennsylvania congressional district looks like ‘Goofy kicking Donald Duck’ https://briefnews.eu/this-pennsylvania-congressional-district-looks-like-goofy-kicking-donald-duck/ https://briefnews.eu/this-pennsylvania-congressional-district-looks-like-goofy-kicking-donald-duck/#respond Sun, 28 Jan 2018 06:48:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-pennsylvania-congressional-district-looks-like-goofy-kicking-donald-duck/ FILE PHOTO: Voters leave a polling station after casting their votes during the U.S. presidential election in Olmsted Falls, Ohio, U.S. on November 8, 2016. • Voters in a Pennsylvania House district have nicknamed the shape of their congressional boundary “Goofy kicking Donald Duck.”
  • The state’s district maps, including the strangely shaped 7th district, were ruled unconstitutional by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court earlier this week.
  • The court ruled the maps gave Republicans an unfair advantage.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the state’s congressional boundaries are unconstitutional, landing another blow to the controversial practice of partisan gerrymandering.

The state legislature has until February 9 to submit new map proposals to Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf for approval. Current congressional maps in the state overwhelmingly favor Republicans.

One district in particular is so lopsided that voters nicknamed it “Goofy Kicking Donald Duck,” since its shape resembles the Disney characters Goofy giving Donald the boot.

“The Seventh District has become a national joke,” Beth Lawn, one of the district’s residents, told The New York Times.

The Republican-led state legislature drew the lines for the 7th District, along with Pennsylvania’s 17 other districts, in 2011 based on the 2010 US census.

Though partisan gerrymandering is a common practice by both Democrats and Republicans, the GOP has had considerable success skewing district lines in its favor since the party’s wave of electoral victories in the 2010 mid-terms. In many states, the majority party has the power to draw congressional boundaries.

But this could soon change as state and federal judges crack down on extreme cases.

Pennsylvania’s 7th is one example of a district under fire for what critics say is its illogical shape, but district maps in states like Wisconsin and North Carolina are on the chopping block as well.

Earlier this month, a federal judge ruled North Carolina’s congressional map unconstitutional and “motivated by invidious partisan intent,” The New York Times reported. The court had ruled earlier that Republicans in the state discriminated against black voters by isolating them in extremely gerrymandered districts, effectively diminishing their voting power and making it easier for Republicans to win House elections.

“Today’s ruling sends a stark message to legislatures and governors around the country: Racial gerrymandering is illegal and will be struck down in a court of law,” former Attorney General Eric Holder said at the time.

The Supreme Court is also considering a redistricting case from Wisconsin and another one from Maryland.

Republican Congressman Pat Meehan currently represents Pennyslvania’s 7th District. Last week, it was revealed that Meehan used taxpayer money to settle a misconduct complaint after a former staffer accused him of making repeated unwanted romantic advances. He will not seek reelection this year.

Net gain for a sport that’s kicking goals https://briefnews.eu/net-gain-for-a-sport-thats-kicking-goals/ https://briefnews.eu/net-gain-for-a-sport-thats-kicking-goals/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 10:05:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/net-gain-for-a-sport-thats-kicking-goals/ SOCCER officials are predicting another seismic shift in already burgeoning participation rates after the Socceroos qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Skipper Mile Jedinak’s hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Honduras in Sydney on Wednesday night is expected to swell the ranks, as happened in 2014 when Australia made it to Brazil.

Football Federation Australia’s Emma Highwood, who is head of community, football development and women’s football, believes soccer will experience another huge 10 per cent boom among children – 7 per cent more growth than a “normal” year without a World Cup on the calendar.

“The Socceroos and Matildas are inspiring boys and girls to play the game,” she said.

“There’s no gender split any more – both boys and girls are looking up to fantastic footballers to get them motivated.

“Every World Cup we see a spike in interest and we’d be looking at a 10 per cent increase in participation rates.”

SA has 34,273 children registered as playing soccer, among 55,709 participants overall.

Figures released on Thursday by AusPlay, which provides data on the most popular sports in Australia, revealed soccer tops participation rates.

More than 1.1 million adults and children play the sport, which is almost 500,000 more participants than Australian football, but SA soccer clubs cannot cope with the demand.

Adelaide City football chairman Tony Costa revealed the club had recently turned away 220 children after it reached its 535-player capacity.

Adelaide City is the biggest club in SA in terms of players, with 750 registered from children to adults.

“The biggest shift in numbers is from girls because of what the Matildas have done on the world stage,” he said

Australian Sports Commission chief executive Kate Palmer expects soccer’s profile to lift again.

“ It is a great opportunity for football to make the most of the increased interest that comes when the Matildas or the Socceroos compete in a major global event like a football World Cup,” she said.

FFA statistics showed junior participation had risen by 20 per cent in 2015 after the 2014 Brazil World Cup and Australia’s Asian Cup win.

For juniors Nicola Scalzi, Christian Migliaccio and Stefan Matteo, all 13, the Socceroos’ and the Matildas’ success has kept their passion alive.

The boys are in the Skilleroos program and are heading to play in the Supermokh Cup in Malaysia next month.

Christian recalls watching the Socceroos at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil on TV.

“It made want to become a Socceroo,” he said.

The first person to investigate the DNC hacks said Russia wouldn’t do anything with the stolen emails — now he’s kicking himself https://briefnews.eu/the-first-person-to-investigate-the-dnc-hacks-said-russia-wouldnt-do-anything-with-the-stolen-emails-now-hes-kicking-himself/ https://briefnews.eu/the-first-person-to-investigate-the-dnc-hacks-said-russia-wouldnt-do-anything-with-the-stolen-emails-now-hes-kicking-himself/#respond Thu, 09 Nov 2017 21:55:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-first-person-to-investigate-the-dnc-hacks-said-russia-wouldnt-do-anything-with-the-stolen-emails-now-hes-kicking-himself/ Vladimir Putin

  • Robert Johnston, the cybersecurity expert who was the first to uncover the extent of Russia’s hacks into the DNC during the 2016 election, didn’t think the stolen data would be leaked to Wikileaks.
  • Johnston, a former Marine, spoke publicly about his role in the DNC hacking investigation for the first time in an interview with Buzzfeed News.
  • Johnston says he “takes responsibility” for thinking that Russia would only used the stolen information for espionage purposes.

In May 2016, Robert Johnston, a former Marine Corps captain, briefed members of the Democratic National Committee about reported hacks into their emails and data servers.

“They’re looking at me and they’re asking, ‘What are they going to do with the data that was taken?'” Johnston told Buzzfeed News.

Johnston’s response: nothing.

More than a year later — as special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into possible coordination between Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia during the 2016 election intensifies — Johnston has realized he couldn’t have been more wrong.

“I take responsibility for that piece,” he said.

As the former head of a government cyber protection team, Johnston had plenty of experience with hacks prior to the DNC incident.

In 2015, he presided over a massive malware attack linked to the Russian government that compromised the computers of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the president’s top military advisers. The attack affected around 4,000 personnel who worked for the Joint Chiefs and kicked the Pentagon’s email system offline for almost two weeks.

As with other hacks that he had witnessed, lots of data was stolen, but it was never released.

DNC headquartersPaul Holston/AP

When the DNC reached out to IT security organization Crowdstrike last year to investigate the DNC hack, the task fell to Johnston, then the firm’s lead investigator. After assessing the damage, he met with DNC officials to discuss what to expect. Thinking back to the previous hacks he had witnessed, he assumed nothing would come of the DNC hack.

“I start thinking back to all of these previous hacks by Russia and other adversaries like China. I think back to the Joint Chiefs hack. What did they do with this data? Nothing. They took the information for espionage purposes. They didn’t leak it to WikiLeaks,” Johnston said.

He says those past hacking experiences convinced him that Russia wouldn’t do anything with the information gathered from the DNC’s servers. He told them not to worry.

He was wrong. The stolen data was leaked to Wikileaks and founder Julian Assange, who published the emails, throwing the 2016 DNC Convention in Philadelphia, PA and the Hillary Clinton campaign into disarray.
