After moving to 50-0 as a boxer with his win over Conor McGregor in last year’s circus fight, Mayweather has reportedly agreed to take his first steps into the world of mixed martial arts and will fight undefeated kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa on New Years’ Eve in an event thrown by Japanese MMA brand RIZIN.

Good news, fans of movies with casts that make you say, “Hmm??” There’s a Kickboxer: Retaliation trailer with your name on it! This all new action extravaganza features Jean-Claude Van Damme, Christopher Lambert, Mike Tyson and the guy who played The Mountain on Game of Thrones. Retaliation is the second film in the rebooted Kickboxer series, which first began back in 1989, when the idea of an entire Kickboxer franchise was only a beautiful dream.

In Kickboxer: Retaliation, original Kickboxer star Jean-Claude Van Damme is back yet again, clearly collecting a quick paycheck before his afternoon nap. The new Retaliation trailer features fleeting glimpses of Van Damme as he wanders around dressed like Hunter S. Thompson, smoking a Sherlock Holmes pipe for some reason. Does it make sense? It does not – just go with it. Van Damme clearly isn’t in this movie that much, which means Kickboxer: Retaliation director Dimitri Logothetis decided to vill the Van Damme-shaped void with a bunch of other random cast members, including Highlander‘s Christopher Lambert, Mike Tyson, and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, the hulking man who played The Mountain on Game of Thrones. Kickboxer: Retaliation Trailer

Wow, that certainly looks like an example of a film! Honestly, the only thing that caught me attention here was Van Damme and his weird Sherlock Holmes pipe. I’m not overly-familiar with the Kickboxer franchise – is that just a thing his character does? Smoke a pipe? I need answers, now. Here’s the Kickboxer: Retaliation synopsis:

One year after finding vengeance for his murdered brother, MMA champion Kurt Sloane finds himself back in Thailand – kidnapped and imprisoned there by a powerful gangster (Christopher Lambert). His only shot at freedom is to win an underground death match against a 400lb killer enhanced with state-of the-art drugs (Game of Thrones’ Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) . To make it out alive, he seeks training unlike anything he’s ever endured, with the help of the legendary Master Durand (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and fellow prisoner Briggs (Mike Tyson).

Oh no, how is Kurt Sloane going to get out of this one? The original Kickboxer franchise ran for 5 films:  Kickboxer, Kickboxer 2: The Road Back, Kickboxer 3: The Art of War, Kickboxer 4: The Aggressor, and Kickboxer 5: The Redemption. Only one of those, the first Kickboxer, starred Van Damme. In 2016, the franchise was rebooted with Kickboxer: Vengeance, a film that brought back Van Damme for a very limited amount of screen time. No one liked it, but here we are, with the next film in the series.

Kickboxer: Retaliation will be released January 26, 2018.

The couple was arrested along with two other Moroccans in the Lombardy province of Lecco last year during a joint investigation by Italy’s anti-terrorism agency, the General Investigations and Special Operations Division (DIGOS) and special operations group of Italy’s carabinieri police force (ROS).

The two other people snatched in the April raid were also convicted over links to international terrorism. Abderrahmane Khachia and Wafa Koraichi got six and three years plus four mounts of house arrest respectively.

The authorities wiretapped the phones of the kickboxer and his wife and discovered the pair was planning to travel to Syria, along with their children then aged two and four to join IS.

Recorded phone conversations have reportedly indicated that Moutaharrik had allegedly “considered” staging an attack in Italy “with particular attention to the city of Rome” and the Vatican.

The kickboxer’s lawyer, however, denied the accusation after the conviction and said his defendant intended to appeal Milan court’s ruling.

Wafa Koraichi, is a sister of Mohammed Koraichi, who is believed to be an IS fighter and the mastermind behind the alleged atrocities planned by the group. Mohammed Koraichi has reportedly travelled to IS-held areas along with his Italian wife and three children. Their current whereabouts are unknown.

Oussama Khachia, the brother of the other convicted Moroccan, Abderrahmane Khachia, was expelled from Italy early in 2015 for promoting radical Islamic ideas and is believed to have died in Syria last year, according to media reports. Abderrahmane himself planned to join the terrorist group in Syria but was arrested before he could do so.

Italy, as a “Mediterranean gate” country through which refugees and migrants flock to Europe, has faced an alarming jihadist infiltration, which poses a serious threat to its security.

Apart from “home-grown” terrorists, who get radicalized on their own, European countries have over the past two years raised concerns over IS involvement in human trafficking in order to simultaneously get additional funds for terrorist activities and to recruit new members.

IS has been deliberately sending its members and even providing funds for refugees to undertake their journey’s to Europe in return for joining the terrorist ranks, according to security analysts.

In 2016, more than 180,000 migrants were illegally smuggled by sea from Africa into Italy in boats, according to the UN refugee agency. Human smuggler rings may have earned up €6 billion in 2015 alone, according to Europol’s estimates.
