The BlackBerry KeyOne has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, which is capable, but hardly top-of-the-line — you’ll find the same processor in Lenovo’s budget Moto G5 Plus, for example. The iPhone 7 sports Apple’s own A10 Fusion chip. All you really need to know is that the iPhone 7 is more powerful, faster, and smoother in general navigation or when playing games and loading apps. With 3GB of RAM, the KeyOne actually bests the iPhone 7, which only has 2GB, on paper, but Apple squeezes better performance out of its hardware, so there’s no real advantage here.
Winner: iPhone 7
With a curved, aluminum body, recessed glass fingerprint sensor, and a 4.7-inch display the iPhone 7 is an attractive phone that’s comfortable to handle. The build quality is excellent, but the lack of a headphone port will be an annoyance for some. The KeyOne is all about the full QWERTY keyboard on the front, but it still sports a Full HD 4.5-inch screen. It is thick and heavy by comparison, with a rounded aluminum body, a rubberized coating on the back, and a flat, angular top that might just remind you of Frankenstein’s monster.
Apple has been trailing the competition for quite some time when it comes to display technology and the iPhone 7 didn’t buck that trend. The 4.7-inch screen looks good, with realistic colors and decent brightness, but it’s not as sharp as many competitors with a resolution that translates to 326 pixels per inch. However, it does support 3D Touch, which allows you to press down for further options and handy shortcuts. The KeyOne’s 4.5-inch display is cut short by the keyboard which gives it a slightly odd resolution, but it’s sharp at 433 ppi. The keyboard can also be used to swipe around, which helps make the most of the limited screen real estate.
In terms of durability, the iPhone 7 scores an IP67 rating, which means it can withstand short spells in water without sustaining long term damage. The BlackBerry KeyOne doesn’t have the same level of water resistance, but it does have a tough frame that can withstand accidental drops.
Winner: iPhone 7
As the biggest bugbear for most smartphone owners, battery life is an important factor for any phone and the BlackBerry KeyOne boasts an unusually big, 3,505mAh battery. It also has a USB Type-C port that supports quick charging. The iPhone 7 has a 1,960mAh battery, which we found is generally enough to see you through the day, but offers little better than average battery life. You’re also stuck with the Lightning port for charging the iPhone and there’s no quick charging capability.
Winner: BlackBerry KeyOne
Both these phones have a 12-megapixel main camera, while the KeyOne has an 8-megapixel front-facing camera and the iPhone 7’s selfie cam is packed with 7-megapixels. They can also both record 4K video. It may look as though the KeyOne has a slight edge here, but there’s a lot more to cameras than megapixels. In the real world, the iPhone 7 camera is faster, more accurate, and boasts a better app. It sadly doesn’t have the dual camera you’ll find in its bigger sibling, the iPhone 7 Plus, but the iPhone 7 camera still comfortably beats the BlackBerry KeyOne.
Winner: iPhone 7
In truth, there are a lot more similarities between Android and iOS than differences, but the software experience on these two phones is quite different. The BlackBerry KeyOne has the very latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat, while the iPhone 7 is currently on iOS 10.3. BlackBerry is committed to regular updates, which will encompass Google’s monthly security patches, so the KeyOne is a good choice for security-conscious Android fans. But fast updates are nothing new for iPhone owners.
We hope Android version updates will also be timely for KeyOne owners, but we’ll have to wait and see. For now, this is a tie.
Winner: Tie
The iPhone 7 starts at $ 650, so the BlackBerry KeyOne is $ 100 cheaper. You can pick up an iPhone 7 for no money down as cheap as $ 21.67 per month, but you will have to lock yourself into a two and half year contract to get that price. We’re still waiting for confirmation on which carriers other than Sprint will be offering the KeyOne, and what the contract prices will be, but we expect it to be cheaper than the iPhone 7.
| Apple iPhone 7 | BlackBerry KeyOne | |
| AT&T | $ 650 or $ 21.67 per month for 30 months | $ 550 |
| Sprint | $ 650 or $ 27.09 per month for 24 months | $ 550 |
| T-Mobile | $ 650 or $ 27.09 per month for 24 months | $ 550 |
| Verizon | $ 650 or $ 27.08 per month for 24 months | $ 550 |
The BlackBerry KeyOne was set for an April release, but that has been pushed back to May 31 in the U.S.
Winner: BlackBerry KeyOne
If you’re struggling to choose between these two phones, then the chances are good that you miss the old physical, BlackBerry keyboard. If that’s the case, then you aren’t going to find a better choice than the KeyOne. It also has good battery life and the latest flavor of Android, with a solid commitment to regular updates. If you can live without the keyboard, then the iPhone 7 is a better phone in almost every other respect. The faster performance, better camera, and slim design are enough to justify the extra $ 100 you’ll need to spend.

To say that the launch of the BlackBerry KEYone has been protracted would be an understatement. BlackBerry and TCL teased the high-profile phone in January, dished out proper details in February, and has left people wondering about a specific US release date ever since. At last, you can relax: BlackBerry and TCL have revealed that the keyboard-equipped Android phone will reach both the US and Canada on May 31st. Americans will be limited to buying the $ 549 unlocked CDMA or GSM versions at first, but take heart — there will be carrier deals, including a Sprint launch sometime in the summer. If you thought the up front price was too much to swallow, you’ll have a way of softening the blow.
In Canada, the handset will be available through Bell, Rogers, SaskTel and Telus for $ 199 CAD on a 2-year contract. For context, a Galaxy S8 is typically $ 250 CAD on similar terms. That might give you a hint as to what you could expect for American carrier pricing — it’ll be considered high end, but might not be as expensive as certain flagships.
The US carrier deal is important. BlackBerry’s previous Android phones, the DTEK series, were virtually non-existent in the States for anyone besides business customers and dedicated fans. A carrier deal not only makes the KEYone more palatable to price-conscious buyers, it puts the phone on the map for shoppers who won’t even consider a phone if don’t see it in a local provider’s store. While the KEYone is unlikely to be a runaway hit, that exposure might help BlackBerry regain some of its long-lost reputation.

]]>The first big phone announcement of Mobile World Congress goes to TCL and BlackBerry, with the two companies unveiling the BlackBerry KeyOne tonight here in Barcelona. The KeyOne is the final version of the device codenamed “Mercury” that we saw at CES last month, and it’s by far the most interesting and enticing BlackBerry phone since TCL started licensing the name.
That is admittedly a low bar. But let’s look at what TCL has achieved here. The KeyOne is an attractive phone with solid fit and finish, hewn from aluminum and covered in Gorilla Glass 4 on the front. The 4.5-inch LCD has a 3:2 aspect ratio and resolution of 1620 x 1080, meaning it’s as sharp as it needs to be. The camera is 12 megapixels and uses a Sony sensor with 1.55-micron pixels.

But the real story is clearly the physical keyboard that sits below the screen. Like the one seen on BlackBerry’s last hurrah as an independent hardware manufacturer, 2015’s expensive and temperamental Priv, it’s touch-sensitive and does a ton of neat tricks. You can use it to scroll without touching the screen; you can assign each key a shortcut, like “I for Instagram” app speed-dial; you can just start typing to start searching Google. There’s also a fingerprint sensor on the space bar.
Combined with the fairly narrow screen, the keyboard makes the KeyOne feel really good to use one-handed. I personally doubt I would ever be anywhere near as fast typing on this keyboard as I am with a touchscreen, but I can’t deny that it feels a thousand times better. It’s also surprisingly useful when multitasking — you can run two apps on the screen at once and enter information without having to obscure one of them with a software keyboard.

This focus on productivity extends to the KeyOne’s internal components. TCL has chosen Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 processor, which isn’t by any means the fastest around but is proven to be power-efficient — you can’t get much work done if your phone’s dead by 3PM, after all. Given the pairing with a large 3505mAh battery, then, we’d expect the KeyOne to last longer than most Android phones out there. (For comparison, Lenovo’s Moto Z Play had impressive endurance with the same processor, a bigger screen, and a very slightly larger 3510mAh battery.)
BlackBerry is also concentrating on security with the KeyOne, launching the phone with Android 7.1 and committing to issuing Google’s monthly security patches. Among BlackBerry mainstays like BBM and the BlackBerry Hub, the KeyOne comes with the same BlackBerry DTEK software pre-loaded on TCL’s earlier BlackBerry devices; it monitors the phone’s status, analyzes how secure it is, and gives you granular control over how services are able to use its functions.
Who needs a physical smartphone keyboard in 2017? No-one, really. But if you want a physical smartphone keyboard, I fully understand, and the BlackBerry KeyOne is here for you. At $ 549 when it ships in April, it’s cheaper than the Priv, but will probably still be a hard sell to most. If you yearn for that tactile feedback, though, it’s kind of your only option. We look forward to finding out just how good an option it is.

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, Chinese electronics company TCL debuted the BlackBerry KeyOne. For those keeping track, this is the phone previously known as codename Mercury, as first revealed by VentureBeat reporter Evan Blass (evleaks) back in June. This is the first BlackBerry smartphone released by TCL under their brand licensing agreement signed in December 2016, and the fourth BlackBerry device running Android.
The BlackBerry KeyOne features an anodized aluminum frame, a textured back, a 4.5-inch display (1620×1080 resolution, 434 PPI, and a 3:2 aspect ratio), and a physical keyboard. The Smart Keyboard, as it’s called, responds to touch gestures, can be programmed to launch up to 52 customizable shortcuts, and has a fingerprint sensor built directly into the spacebar. The phone will be available globally in April, priced at €599, £499, and $ 549.
The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor with an Adreno 506 GPU, 32GB of storage with a microSD slot, 3GB of RAM, and a 3505 mAh battery (the largest ever in a BlackBerry device). TCL is promising a 50 percent charge in just 36 minutes. It also features a 12MP rear camera (1.55um) with the Sony IMX378 sensor and a 8MP front-facing sensor. The exact dimension are 149.3mm x 72.5mm x 9.4mm with a weight of 180g.

The best part about the KeyOne is that it’s the first BlackBerry Android phone that is finally running the latest version of Google’s operating system, currently Android Nougat 7.1. The Priv, the DTEK50, and the DTEK60 were all at least one version behind when announced. Like its predecessors, the KeyOne comes with Google apps and the Play store, monthly Google patch updates, plus BlackBerry’s additional security, privacy, and productivity tools. The pitch is the same: This is the latest in a line of “most secure Android smartphones.”
“Impressively designed to be distinctly different, the BlackBerry KeyOne reimagines how we communicate by offering unmatched productivity and the world’s most secure Android smartphone experience,” TCL CEO Nicolas Zibell said in a statement. “We’re humbled to play such an important role in the future of BlackBerry smartphones, which have been so iconic in our industry, and we’re eager to prove to the BlackBerry community that their excitement around this new BlackBerry smartphone is something they can be proud of as well.”
“We want to congratulate TCL Communications on the launch of KeyOne,” BlackBerry senior vice president Alex Thurber said in a statement. “We have worked closely with TCL to build security and the BlackBerry experience into every layer of KeyOne, so the BlackBerry DNA remains very much in place. We couldn’t be more excited to help bring it to market and introduce it to BlackBerry fans.”
If you yearn for a hardware keyboard, so far it looks the BlackBerry KeyOne will be your best bet this year.

BARCELONA, Spain—Mobile World Congress is starting right now, and BlackBerry is the first out of the gate with a new phone. Remember the “BlackBerry Mercury” from CES? That phone is now the BlackBerry KeyOne, a mid-range QWERTY-bar phone.
The release of the KeyOne marks the end of BlackBerry’s days as a hardware manufacturer. While the KeyOne seems like it was designed by BlackBerry, from now on the hardware will be outsourced to TCL, a Chinese company that also owns the Alcatel brand. We’ve already seen the beginnings of this with the DTEK line, but the KeyOne looks like the last “BlackBerry” BlackBerry phone.

After weeks of leaks and endless rumours, the BlackBerry Mercury – now officially known as BlackBerry KEYOne has dropped ahead of the Mobile World Congress gathering in Barcelona.
Merging the old with the new, the phone retains BlackBerry’s iconic physical QWERTY keyboard, building it around a stunning touchscreen display and a set of specs capable of rivalling the iPhone 7.
Although a device that marks a new era for BlackBerry phones, the KEYOne will continue to grab attention for the same reason as its predecessors – that physical keyboard.
More than just a collection of keys, the Smart Keyboard responds to touch gestures, with flick typing support available alongside trackpad style gestures that make navigating web pages and emails a simple process.
As well as letting you speed up your email replies and work-based typing sessions, the phone’s keyboard can also let you jump straight into certain tasks, allowing users to programme up to 52 customisable shortcuts.
These include process quickening shortcuts including pressing ‘I’ to open your inbox, or ‘M’ to access maps.
These QWERTY keys aren’t the phone’s only input method either, with a 4.5-inch 3:2 display sat above the physical controls.
This panel offers all the usual touch skills and visual delights thanks to a 1620 x 1080 pixel resolution.
Where the KEYOne doesn’t match up to the likes of Samsung Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7, however, is raw power, with the mid-range Snapdragon 625 processor running the show instead of the top of the line 835.
This is partnered with a huge 3505mAh battery that’s enhanced by Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 abilities that will allow the phone to go from flat to 50 per cent charge in just 36 minutes.
The phone isn’t just packed with a mass of high-end components either, it looks great too.
Combining an anodised aluminium frame with a soft touch back, the BlackBerry KEYOne oozes the company’s traditional class in a form that will look as comfortable in the boardroom as it will on a night out.
Although bearing the BlackBerry name, the new phone has actually been pieced together by third party manufacturer TCL as the first device of a partnership between the two companies.
“Impressively designed to be distinctly different, the BlackBerry KEYOne reimagines how we communicate by offering unmatched productivity and the world’s most secure Android smartphone experience,” said Nicolas Zibell, CEO for TCL Communication.
“We’re humbled to play such an important role in the future of BlackBerry smartphones, which have been so iconic in our industry, and we’re eager to prove to the BlackBerry community that their excitement around this new BlackBerry smartphone is something they can be proud of as well.”
Finishing off the phone’s impressive specs sheet, the latest BlackBerry smartphone runs a 12-megapixel camera on the rear using the Sony IMX378 camera sensor – that’s the same snapper fitted within the brilliant Google Pixel.
The phone will go on sale in April, with prices confirmed to be “at or under £499.”
BlackBerry isn’t the only former smartphone giant to be getting back into the smartphone race this week either.
Tomorrow, February 26, Nokia is expected to make a grand return, with the heavily tipped Nokia P1 widely expected to make an appearance alongside a reworking of the classic Nokia 3310.
