Microsoft’s E3 keynote is in the rear-view. Join editors Billy Steele and Nick Summers as they break down the most important announcements. Or, if you haven’t got 11 minutes, here’s an even shorter rundown:

What did we expect to happen?

At E3 this year, Microsoft defied expectations. Last December it was revealed that the company was going on a shopping spree for new games and studios. And boy did Microsoft do just that.

What surprised us?

Xbox chief Phil Spencer announced that since last year it’d bought four development teams (including Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice studio, Ninja Theory), and formed another with the former head of Crystal Dynamics. The Xbox team showed off a plethora of new games, including Devil May Cry 5, and a peek at a brand new Halo, Infinity. Oh, and Microsoft is getting back into mobile gaming, with a Funko Pop version of Gears of War coming to Android and iOS.

What announcement drove the audience wild?

Cyberpunk 2077. Microsoft ended its media briefing this year with a surprise: a trailer for a long-in-development, hardcore role-playing game from the team responsible for The Witcher. Cyberpunk‘s dystopia looks positively inviting, not oppressive like so many other futuristic sci-fi yarns. There’s a lot of neon, not a lot of fog or rain (yet) and, of course, plenty of imagery that’d make William Gibson proud. Or not. He’s already tweeted that the game looks like Grand Theft Auto, albeit “with a generic ’80s retro-future” motif.

What sucked the air out of the room?

If there was a low point, it was the new trailer for Crackdown 3. It felt like a “director’s cut” version of last year’s Terry-Crews-led reveal, except this time, it was appended with news that the game wouldn’t be out until next February. This was Crackdown 3‘s third E3 in four years, and you won’t be able to buy it until 2019. Maybe. If the stars align, and the unicorn-blood ritual goes off without a hitch.

So, was it good?

It was the best media briefing Microsoft has had in awhile. But, as years prior, so many of the announcements were for games coming out early next year, or for other platforms as well.

What’s left to look forward to at E3?

Quite a bit! Earlier today we’ve got Ubisoft’s media briefing, and then tonight Sony’s media briefing marks the end of E3’s pre-show portion. And of course, we can’t forget about Nintendo tomorrow before the show floor itself opens up. There are still a raft of announcements to come, and we’re here to help you sift through all of them.

At 10am PDT (1pm EDT, 5pm GMT) on Monday, June 4, 2018, Apple will host its keynote to kick off the 2018 Worldwide Developers Conference. The company will outline its software plans for Macs, iPhones, iPads, and much more. Ars will of course be in attendance, and we’ll share the updates with you as they happen in our WWDC 2018 liveblog.

Expect details from Apple about iOS 12, macOS 10.14, tvOS 12, and watchOS 5. This year, Apple plans to focus on performance and stability improvements over major new features or UI overhauls. iOS 12 will likely include more ways manage your usage of your digital device usage.

Not much is currently known about macOS 10.14—however, Apple is known to be working on a software development framework to bring macOS and iOS applications closer together. It could be discussed this year—or Apple could wait until next year’s macOS release to talk about it.

Two former British prime ministers, the Irish leader, the leader of the opposition and the EU’s key negotiators have all offered the current prime minister their thoughts in the run-up to her keynote address, and none of them were in the mood to hold back.

May’s address today is the culmination of a series of speeches from the Tory MPs running the Brexit debacle. Boris Johnson, David Davis and Liam Fox all failed to reassure anyone that solutions are close.

According to reports, the prime minister will tell the world that she plans to “secure an ambitious economic partnership with the EU.” This is the kind of sitting-on-the-fence statement that causes anger on all sides of the debate.

The EU doesn’t want to know what she wants to do, but rather how she plans to do it. The anti-Brexit brigade, personified by the ever-present and widely unwelcome Tony Blair, wants some detail so they know exactly how to sabotage Britain’s attempt to leave the EU.

If May wants to project a friendly face for the cameras in her mission to secure her ultimate goal of frictionless trade, it was made harder when it became clear that the draft Brexit treaty the EU plans to put forward includes one very small detail…the de facto annexation of Northern Ireland.

May’s response was: “No UK Prime Minister could ever agree to it.” Herein lies the problem: who exactly is willing to agree on anything? 

The main issue this week has been what to do with the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic. Should it become a hard border with customs checks, or a soft border, as it is now? Neither May or the EU want a hard border, but neither can’t work out how to officially agree on that. If the border remains soft, it means Britain has not retaken control of its borders with the EU after all.

On Thursday, EU Council President Donald Tusk called on May to offer “new ideas” to prevent a hard border. Realistically, no one is expecting her to come up with one.

If there was any doubt about just how big a task May faces, the following quotes from major political figures come from the last few days alone. The pressure is massive.

“Some in Britain believe that therefore Europe will bend in its negotiating stance and allow Britain largely unfettered access to Europe’s single market without the necessity of abiding by Europe’s rules. This won’t happen because quite simply it can’t.”

“We simply cannot move forward with leaving the EU, the Single Market, the Customs Union and the ECJ, whilst at the same time expecting à la carte, beneficial-to-Britain, bespoke entrance to the European market. It is just not credible.”

A willingness to compromise is essential. If either side – the UK or the EU – is too inflexible, too unbending, too wedded to what they won’t do – then the negotiations will fail.”

The Foreign Secretary says it will be “a liberal Brexit,” the Prime Minister says it will be a “red white and blue Brexit,” or on other days it’s a “bespoke economic partnership.”
