It’s beginning to feel as if the TV gods have a personal vendetta against Locke & Key, the troubled small screen adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s acclaimed horror comic series. The project has been kicking around Hollywood for nearly a decade, and while it was resurrected recently and appeared to be closer than ever to making it across the finish line, the project is searching for a new home once again. Below, you can read more about the Locke & Key TV show and how it’s still clinging to life.

Actress Samantha Mathis (Super Mario Bros., FernGully: The Last Rainforest) recently gave an interview to Cultured Vultures (via Bloody-Disgusting) and revealed that Hulu has passed on their planned version of a Locke & Key TV show:

“I did a pilot for Hulu called Locke and Key but it didn’t get picked up by Hulu. It’s getting shopped around to Amazon and Netflix and Apple and everyone right now. Who knows, maybe that will end up some place.”

Before we recount the troubled history of this project, here’s the official synopsis of Hill’s comic, which ran from 2008 until 2013:

Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them…. and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all…! Acclaimed suspense novelist and New York Times best-selling author Joe Hill (Heart-Shaped Box) creates an all-new story of dark fantasy and wonder, with astounding artwork from Gabriel Rodriguez.

Director Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go) directed a pilot for Locke & Key back in 2011, starring Miranda Otto and Nick Stahl. The pilot played for crowds at Comic-Con, but Fox ended up passing on it. Here’s the trailer for that version:

A year later, Universal considered adapting the comic series into a movie trilogy with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Transformers, Fringe) writing. But that ultimately didn’t happen, and the project fell into development hell yet again.

Then, in 2016, the adaptation got new life. IDW Entertainment, which published the Locke & Key comics, began developing a new take on the show. Hulu ordered a new hour-long pilot, which was directed by Doctor Strange filmmaker Scott Derrickson. But now Hulu has bailed, leaving the project without a home yet again. According to Mathis, the show may still be picked up by Amazon, Netflix, Apple, etc., but at this point, I’m guessing fans of Locke & Key are probably all too familiar with the feeling of getting their hopes up only for the rug to be pulled out from under them. Here’s hoping this show is either picked up immediately or swiftly put out of its misery once and for all.

Back in the day, movie studios used to dump horror movies on Christmas, aiming to snag audiences full of people gleefully hoping to subvert holiday expectations. Those days have mostly passed (December box office has become a second summer when it comes to grosses), but horror has found a new home in early January, where it acts as the perfect cure to the Christmastime blues.

And Insidious: The Last Key will surely jump scare the holiday hangover right out of you, as this new clip from the film promises.

Insidious: The Last Key is the fourth film in the Insidious series, but the second film chronologically, following paranormal investigator Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) in the time before the first movie (where she kicks the bucket). The new film delves into her backstory, with the elderly psychic investigating a haunting at her childhood home. Spookiness abounds! Demons appear suddenly! You scream and throw your popcorn in the air because it’s that kind of movie!

Anyway, here’s that clip (courtesy of IGN). It has just about everything you’d expect from an Insidious movie at this point: bleak colors interrupted by splashes of red, a kid in peril, unsettling sound design, and a creepy demon hand (which we can safely assume is attached to a creepy demon body that will lurch into the frame at some point).

The film once again puts Shaye (a genre veteran and a total onscreen badass) in the spotlight, proving that 74-year old women can totally command a horror franchise. While the screenplay is once again written by series veteran Leigh Whannell (who also returns as Specs, one of Elise’s fellow investigators), Adam Robitel is in the director’s seat this time around. Robitel previously directed the very creepy The Taking of Deborah Logan, so I’m curious to see how he acquits himself in an established horror franchise.

Insidious: The Last Key opens on January 5, 2018.

Europe’s biggest tech trade show, IFA, is taking place in Berlin this week and alongside the latest industry developments, tech companies also unveiled some eye-catching, though odd, innovations.

RT takes a look at some of the wackiest gadgets unveiled at the event.

1 Hair dryer hood

This bizarre looking helmet hair dryer is groundbreaking in allowing the user keep their hands free while the hood drys and styles their hair. On the down side, it still has to be plugged in…

The device comes with an ‘ionizing’ function that promises to leave hair smooth and shiny.

The Profi Care PC-HTH 3003 Hair dryer Hood also includes a round brush and a 1.8m cord, as well as a travel bag.

2 Implants to ‘upgrade humans’

Digiwell presented its range of smart implants which it describes as “the permanent fusion of the human body with technology.”

The implants can be inserted into an individual’s hand at home and act as a digital interface for the body. The company says the product would make house keys redundant.

3 Flying ‘selfie’ camera

The end may be nigh for the selfie stick if this device takes hold: the Airselfie, billed as a “revolutionary pocket-size flying camera” that will be the “future of selfies.”

It has a HD 5-megapixel-video camera which connects to your smartphone and weighs just 61 grams. The device can reach heights of 20 meters thanks to its turbo fan propellers.

4 The ‘communicative’ oven

Miele unveiled its “intelligent” Dialog oven that “communicates” with food while it’s cooking.

The appliance uses electromagnetic waves to monitor the texture of the food while cooking and adjusts accordingly, promising to provide excellent results every time. The perfect meal doesn’t come cheap, however. Dialog has an eye-watering retail price of €7,990.

5 Double chin eliminator

The Rio toner claims to banish double chins and tone the whole neck and chin area in just 60 seconds.

“Target tone the ‘double chin’ alone in just 60 seconds a day. Feel the effect after just one use and see the results in just a few days,” manufacturers claim.

The device uses advanced Electrical-Muscle-Stimulation to exercise the supporting muscles and increase circulation.

Actor Jackson Robert Scott, who plays the ill-fated Georgie Denbrough in the upcoming movie version of Stephen King’s It, has joined another King-adjacent project: he’ll play eight-year-old Bode Locke in the TV series adaptation of Locke & Key, which is based on the comic series from artist Gabriel Rodriguez and writer Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son). It director Andy Muschietti is directing that pilot, so this should be a nice reunion for him and Scott.

I’ve never listened to the podcast Lore before, but this quick, eye-catching teaser for an upcoming Amazon TV series based on that podcast has me wanting to change that. Here’s the synopsis:

Based on the podcast phenomenon and narrated by creator Aaron Mahnke, this haunting six-episode anthology series is brought to life by the executive producer of The Walking Dead and the executive producer of The X-Files. Alf Clausen, who has served as the composer for The Simpsons for the past 27 years, has been fired, per Variety. Budget cuts are part of the reason for his dismissal, and Clausen told the outlet that one of the show’s producers told him they were looking for “a different kind of music,” so they decided to let him go. That’s unfortunate, especially considering Clausen is the most-nominated musician in Emmy history, having two wins and 21 nominations with this show alone. That’s an awful lot of history to throw away due to budget cuts, but I guess 35-piece orchestras don’t come cheap.

Remember the game show You Can’t Do That On Television? The original version was a Canadian show that gained notoriety through reruns on Nickelodeon, and now a producer is looking to reboot the show that introduced that network’s iconic slime, complete with “musical performances, celebrity cameos and interactive elements across multiple platforms.” No word on whether this will actually be on Nickelodeon yet, but it could end up on another network…which would make the slime thing sort of awkward if they chose to retain that aspect, wouldn’t it?

Kat Dennings Thor

YouTube Red has picked up a new eight-episode animated series called Dallas & Robo, which stars Kat Dennings as sassy space trucker named Dallas and wrestler-turned-actor John Cena as a warrior poet named Robo. The show follows the pair as they “navigate their way through cannibal bikers, rival space truckers and vending machine burritos as they try to make a few dollars through the seedy world of interplanetary big rigging.” With a fantastic voice cast that also includes Jane Lynch, Giancarlo Esposito, Clancy Brown, Nat Faxon, and Taran Killam, this might be enough to get me to pay for YouTube Red subscription. Probably not. But maybe.

Robert Downey Jr in The Judge

True Detective scribe Nic Pizzolatto was previously hired to write a Perry Mason reboot for Robert Downey Jr. to star in, but since he’s heading back to True Detective for season 3, new writers have been brought in to take over. Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald (Weeds, Friday Night Lights) will step in for an HBO adaptation of the popular investigator/defense attorney character, which will mark Downey’s first major TV role since his time on Ally McBeal.
