Energy bills, from electric to gas, are an unfortunate fact of life.

But with many providers announcing price rises this year, homeowners are looking for ingenious ways to slash their bills.

One way could be by using certain household items less, and the kettle is one of the most switched on electrical items in homes across the UK.

But how much does it cost to run a kettle and how much could be saved by not using it?

According to Npower, a kettle costs around 2.5 pence to boil.

They say: “The average kettle holds 1.5 pints and uses about one unit of electricity to boil 12 pints of water (or 8 x 1.5 pint-full kettles) – so that’s around 2.5p every time you boil a full kettle.”

Research by Contact the Elderly found Britons drink an average of 876 cups of tea a year.

Foregoing these would save £21.90 a year – and further savings are available for those who also drink lots of coffee.

Another popular item in the winter which could potentially be adding to electricity bills is the electric blanket.

And they aren’t as expensive as you might think to run.

Rather than using your household radiators to heat up a room, a heated blanket could be the answer to all your winter fuel issues.

Using an energy-efficient blanket for two hours a day, every day for six months costs just £2.99, Which? have revealed.

Even the least energy-efficient heated blanket the company tested cost just £8.06 to run for the same amount of time.

In Britain the average energy bill in a gas central-heated home is approximately £1300, according to TheGreenAge.

Looking at how the £1300 is split makes for an interesting read; 70 per cent of the total bill is the cost of gas for the house.

Of that 70 per cent – 85 per cent of this total cash paid out is for heating. That’s approximately £775 goes towards heating (£1300 x 0.7 x 0.85).

Hotel rooms hide all sort of secrets, from when the bedding was last washed to who last used the bathroom.

Even high-end hotels don’t keep the rooms as clean as guests may think, with items such as the bedspreads and glasses rarely getting cleaned.

However one of the more popular items in the room has also come under fire for not being the cleanest thing to use.

It may make tired guests rethink their next cup of tea.

It has recently emerged that some people staying in a hotel use the kettle to wash their dirty underwear, by boiling them within it to sterilise them.

Australian site Gizmodo found one man, Guy Blomberg asking the question on Twitter: “Real question: does anyone I know clean their underwear in a kettle when travelling?”

He then went on to explain how a frequent travelling friend of his told him.

Defending his side, he reiterated: “Heard it from a friend of mine, beware travellers. This is a customer service announcement for your safety and happy tea drinking

Not only is it a disgusting thing to do, but it isn’t clean for either the person washing their underwear or the people to do it afterwards.

Senior Lecturer in Molecular Biosciences Dr Heather Hendrickson spoke to Gizmodo about the repercussions.

She confirmed: “Your friend is unlikely to have a large number of highly heat resistant pathogens in his dirty undergarments but we do not know what he DOES have in there or how sick he might be.

“There are simply too many unknowns and hotel kettles are not industrial strength cleaning facilities.”

Whilst many may hope it is just a disgusting rumour, it will certainly stop some travellers from next using the kettle.

Last year, Stephanie Lee saved nearly $ 10,000 in housing expenses when she decided to forgo an apartment in Los Angeles to Airbnb-hop around the world.

A freelance writer and the blogger behind FY!S, Lee lived in a series of Airbnb rentals for 11 months in Paris, Tokyo, London, Barcelona, Seoul, Taipei, Singapore, and Honolulu. It cost her just $ 10,584.

She’s currently spending time back home in Los Angeles with friends and family, but plans to return to the road at the end of the month, kicking off her next adventure in Canada.

“This work and traveling ‘digital nomad’ lifestyle is just a different way of life for me and can be sustainable, so I think long term about it,” Lee told Business Insider. But that hasn’t always been her philosophy. At one point, she says, penny-pinching got the best of her.

“There was a time that I used to have a fierce scarcity mindset, but all it took was a broken electric kettle that turned my perspective around,” Lee said.

Here’s what happened:

“When I first moved back to Los Angeles, I had an electric kettle that had busted during my move. It still worked, but the lid wouldn’t close and you had to stand there and hold it down to let it finish its boil.

“I left it with my parents who insisted that they could still use it. I rolled my eyes and left to vagabond around the planet. However, I returned over a year later to find that they were still using the kettle.

“I tried to boil water for some coffee one day and I stood there like a coffee-deprived idiot, using a wooden spatula to hold down the lid, and waited for it to click and finish its boil.

“Suddenly, I thought about how many times my parents had stood like this and put up with this lid, day after day, multiple times each day; all that wasted time and energy. Just to save $ 20.”

Since then, Lee says she’s learned to “spend money on things that add value and happiness, or remove a ‘negative,'” from her life, like paying a CPA to avoid the headache of doing her taxes, or spending $ 100 on a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience.

That also means Lee avoids debt and puts away money for the future by saving for retirement in an IRA and investing in index funds, all while earning a modest income.

“This all ties back into my ‘F— Yes!’ philosophy — inspired by Mark Manson and Derek Sivers — which I repurposed for my spending, healthy habits, and some other decisions in life. In other words, that ‘something’ better make me say ‘F— Yes!’ now, 15 minutes from now, or even 15 days from now,” she said.

“It’s my buffer to curb those in-the-moment temptations, but also doubles as a personal mantra to challenge me to do the things that might otherwise scare me.”
