Serena Williams CRIES after losing Wimbledon final to Angelique Kerber in straight sets https://briefnews.eu/serena-williams-cries-after-losing-wimbledon-final-to-angelique-kerber-in-straight-sets/ https://briefnews.eu/serena-williams-cries-after-losing-wimbledon-final-to-angelique-kerber-in-straight-sets/#respond Sat, 14 Jul 2018 18:22:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/serena-williams-cries-after-losing-wimbledon-final-to-angelique-kerber-in-straight-sets/

Williams, 36, was cheered on by superstar pals Tiger Woods and Lewis Hamilton while her good friend Meghan Markle was in the Royal Box.

But it was Kerber who put in a regal performance, crushing Williams 6-3 6-3 to win her third Grand Slam title.

The German collapsed on the SW19 turf after taking the win as she became the first German to be crowned champions since Steffi Graf in 1996.

An emotional Williams was almost crying at the end in her first Wimbledon campaign since giving birth to daughter Olympia.

It means she will have to wait for what would have been a 24th Grand Slam final.

Williams told the BBC: “It was such an amazing tournament for me. I was really happy to get this far. It’s obviously disappointing, but I cannot be disappointed, I have so much to look forward to and I am just getting started.

“I am just me, and that’s all I can be. To all the mums out there, I was playing for you today, and I tried but Angelique played really well, she played out of her mind. I look forward to continuing to be out here and do what I do best.

“She’s an incredible person, a really good friend, so I am really happy for her. I know she’s going to really enjoy it and enjoy the moment.”

Kerber was in inspired form on Centre Court but, in truth, Williams was never at the races.

She made too many unforced errors and uncharacteristically missed simple balls that she would usually put away with regularity.

It’s Kerber’s third Grand Slam win after taking the Australian Open and US Open title in 2016.

The German raced to her box after taking the crown before returning to lift the trophy.

She said: “It’s a dream come true, Serena you are a great person and champion, such an inspiration for everyone watching. I’m sure you win have your next Grand Slam soon so congratulations for coming back.

“I knew I had to play my best against a champion like Serena, it is always an honour to share a court with her. It is my second chance to play in front of you on Centre Court, I enjoyed every second of the last two weeks so thanks for all the support.

“I am the next German winner after Steffi Graf. Thanks to my box, my family and friends and my team watching at home. Without you I won’t be here, so thanks.”

Six-time Wimbledon champion Billie Jean King was courtside to watch the clash and believes Williams paid the price for a lack of fitness.

“Serena could never get any rhythm, if you can keep her out there long enough,” she said.

“Keep the rallies long, and see how fit she is… she looked a bit like she was sucking it up, out of breath a few times.

“Kerber always gets that one more ball back.

“I think we’ll see her back next year super fit because she will really want to win it badly.”

Rafa: ‘Too many people getting injured’1:16

Tennis: Rafa Nadal Hurt Rafa sends stern message

NOT for the first time, play at the Australian Open was paused momentarily for a crying baby during Rafa Nadal’s quarter-final with Marin Cilic. It sparked a debate on social media and among commentators about whether something needs to change.

During the last eight clash on Rod Laver Arena, play was halted during the third set with the world No 1 4-3 up in a third set tie-break.

Nadal waited to serve as the infant was soothed and the chair umpire felt comfortable for play to continue.

Jim Courier, commentating for Channel 7 weighed in saying: “This is where the player wants a chair umpire to ask for the baby to be removed.

“Neither of these guys want to play with that. What’s a baby doing awake at 10pm at night, anyway?”

Meanwhile, with Nadal heading home and all hopes of a Fedal 2.0 final gone, we await Roger Federer’s quarter-final with Tomas Berdych and South Korea’s new tennis hero Hyeon Chung vs. Tennys Sandgren.

Australian Open 2018 LIVE: Djokovic vs Ramos, Sharapova vs Kerber, Federer to follow https://briefnews.eu/australian-open-2018-live-djokovic-vs-ramos-sharapova-vs-kerber-federer-to-follow/ https://briefnews.eu/australian-open-2018-live-djokovic-vs-ramos-sharapova-vs-kerber-federer-to-follow/#respond Sat, 20 Jan 2018 09:48:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/australian-open-2018-live-djokovic-vs-ramos-sharapova-vs-kerber-federer-to-follow/

Federer is due to take on one of his “bunnies” on the tour – he has beaten Richard Gasquet 16 out of 18 times and has never lost on the hard court to the Frenchman. Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics awaits the winner in the fourth round.

But they will have to wait for their moment on Rod Laver Arena, with the organisers scheduling a mouth-watering women’s match first with Angelique Kerber and Maria Sharapova running into each other.

Sharapova is a “dangerous floater” in the draw thanks to her lowly ranking after a 15-month doping ban for a negative test here in Melbourne two years ago. The Russian leads her head-to-head with the former world No 1 4-3 but has not beaten her since 2013.

And Djokovic, also under-represented by his No 14 seed, will likely be given his toughest test since elbow surgery by Albert Ramos-Vinolas in their third-round clash.

  • Halep wins marathon match 15-13 in the third
  • Zverev dumped out by Chung
  • Sharapova loses first set to brilliant Kerber
  • Djokovic takes first set against Ramos-Vinolas
  • Federer vs Gasquet (expected 10.30am)

Australian Open 2018 LIVE

9.25am: It’s all happening on Margaret Court. Djokovic spends five minutes on the floor with the trainer apparently trying to loosen up his back but getst back up again – and promptly breaks and holds to take a 4-1 lead in the second set. His movement doesn’t seem perfect but he is hitting the ball so sweetly, it hardly seems to matter.

Back on RLA, Sharapova has been broken again to trail in the second but she’s back immediately and it’s 2-2.

9.10am: A third break and the first set to Kerber. Sensational stuff! 6-1 she takes it.

8.55am: First blood for Djokovic over on Margaret Court. The Serb has looked pretty flawless since his return – but Ramos is going to push him. Djokovic saved break points in his second and third service games but then broke to lead 4-2, converting his seventh opportunity of the set.

And the former world No 1 has broken again to seal the first 6-2.

Sharapova meanwhile is deep trouble. She’s trying to bring the power to counter Kerber, but the German is firing everything back with interest! She now has a double break and leads 4-1 in the first serve.

8.45am: Worst possible start for Maria Sharapova. The Russian is broken in the first game of the match and Kerber consolidates with confidence. After the miserable year she had in 2017, it’s quite nice to see the former world No 1 playing with some swagger again. She is playing off her lowest seeding in six years but looks a far better player than world No 16 right now. Leads 2-0.

8.30am: Over on Hisense (Melbourne Park’s third court), it’s a bad start for Juan Martin del Potro. He’s lost the first set 6-3 and has been broken in the very first game of the second.

Then again, when does Delpo ever do it the easy way?

Djokovic and Ramos are still on serve, three games in.

8am: Right. I think we’re all caught up on Zverev now. That was a spectacular captiulation from the 20-year-old. Not good.

Let’s catch up on overnight. Simona Halep proved why she is world No 1, overcoming Lauren Davis in nearly FOUR HOURS. It took the Romanian, carrying an ankle injury, 227 minutes to beat her American opponent 15-13 in the third.

And Australia lost their last representative in the women’s singles, Ashleigh Barty beaten in straight sets by Naomi Osaka of Japan.

Meanwhile, in the men’s draw, Dominic Thiem conserved plenty of energy, beating Adrian Mannarino in three, while Fabio Fognini went the distance to win against Julian Benneteau.

Finally, Marton Fucsovics could Roger Federer in his first ever Grand Slam fourth round – the Hungarian beat Nicolas Kicker in three sets.

7.45am: There it is. After a couple of tantrums, Zverev has been beaten in five sets and walks off Rod Laver with a few boos ringing around. He completely went to pieces in that final set. That’s the end of the day session.

We’ve got Sharapova and Djokovic both due on at 8am – or just after. More drama to come, no doubt.

7.40am: Morning! I’ll give you a little round-up of the night’s action in a moment but first there is a big story developing: world No 4 Alexander Zverev is about to crash out to 21-year-old Hyeon Chung, who is serving for the fifth set at 5-0.

More as it happens…

U.S. Open: Japan's Osaka stuns defending champ Kerber in 1st round https://briefnews.eu/u-s-open-japans-osaka-stuns-defending-champ-kerber-in-1st-round/ https://briefnews.eu/u-s-open-japans-osaka-stuns-defending-champ-kerber-in-1st-round/#respond Wed, 30 Aug 2017 01:03:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/u-s-open-japans-osaka-stuns-defending-champ-kerber-in-1st-round/

Angelique Kerber left the U.S. Open last year on top of women’s tennis, with a second Grand Slam title and the No. 1 ranking.

She leaves this year after one match — unsure of exactly what went wrong during a season-long slump.

The sixth-seeded German was beaten by Naomi Osaka of Japan 6-3, 6-1, the first defending women’s champion eliminated in the first round of the U.S. Open in 12 years.

Naomi Osaka upsets Angelique Kerber in first round of U.S. Open0:36

“I think, yeah, it was not my day, completely not my day today,” Kerber said.

Not her year, actually.

Kerber is also on her way out of the top 10 after losing one of the only completed matches before most of the schedule was washed out on a rainy Tuesday. Canada’s Genie Bouchard was scheduled to play Tuesday and will now play her first-round match on Wednesday morning, while Denis Shapovalov will play his second-round match later in Wednesday night.

Earlier, No. 1 seed Karolina Pliskova won her first-round match, defeating Magda Linette of Poland 6-2, 6-1.

Fellow Czech Barbora Strycova also advanced quickly to the second round. The No. 23 seed beat Misaki Doi of Japan 6-1, 6-3.

Not since Svetlana Kuznetsova lost in the first round in 2005 had the defending U.S. Open women’s champion been ousted so early.

But perhaps it wasn’t too surprising after Kerber played so poorly following her breakthrough 2016, when she also won the Australian Open and lost to Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final before ascending to No. 1 with her victory here.

This year, she fell in the first round of the French Open, that first time that had ever happened to the women’s No. 1 seed in that tournament.

She said she had been practicing well and was confident, despite some minor nagging injuries she had bothered her throughout the season.

“I’m still the same player and the same person, so I think it’s just — yeah, I think it’s just the matches and how I played last year from the beginning and how I’m struggling this year,” Kerber said.

Top seed Pliskova advances to 2nd round of U.S. Open1:02

Kerber and Osaka had the stage to themselves after play was suspended on all courts other than Arthur Ashe Stadium, which has a retractable roof that was closed midway through No. 1 Karolina Pliskova’s 6-2, 6-1 victory over Magda Linette of Poland.

Kerber then took the same court where she beat Pliskova for the title last year and took another stinging defeat.

The left-hander fell to 25-18 with no titles in 2017. She needed to make it to at least the round of 16 to stay in the top 10 and couldn’t get close. She had been in the top 10 since Oct. 5, 2015, a run that would total 101 weeks before she falls out.

Seeds falling fast

With No. 2 Simona Halep’s loss to Maria Sharapova on Monday night and seventh-seeded Johanna Konta also falling, three of the top-seven seeds on the women’s side were gone by the mid-day Tuesday — with Williams not playing because she’s pregnant.

Osaka broke for a 5-3 lead in the first set, then seized control when she broke twice in the second set to open a 4-1 cushion. She finished off the 65-minute victory when Kerber dumped a forehand into the net on match point before quickly departing for the locker room.

It was Osaka’s first victory over a top-10 opponent after she was oh-so-close to beating a top player here last year, blowing a 5-1 lead in the third set and losing to Madison Keys in the third round.

“I just want to play good,” Osaka said. “I played good today, so I want to carry that on to my next match.”

Nadal an easy winner

Rafael Nadal has improved to 13-0 in U.S. Open first-round matches by beating Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic 7-6 (6), 6-2, 6-2.

The No. 1 seed dominated after a first set that lasted more than an hour. With rain wiping out most of the day’s play, Nadal became the first man to complete a match Tuesday.

World #1 Nadal easily advances at U.S. Open1:15

With his victory, the two-time U.S. Open champion assured that Roger Federer has to reach the semifinals for a chance to regain the No. 1 ranking.

Federer was to play later Tuesday against American Frances Tiafoe.

Stosur reigns as top Aussie1:00

Tennis: Sam Stosur defeated fellow Aussie Daria Gavrilova in 3-sets at the Strasbourg International.

World No. 1 Angelique Kerber has been dumped out of the French Open in the first round.

WORLD No 1 ANGELIQUE Kerber has been sensationally dumped out of the French Open in an exit which has implications for Australia’s Sam Stosur.

The first women’s top seed to crash at the first hurdle at Roland Garros in the Open era, the German was whipped 6-2 6-2 by Russian Ekaterina Markarova.

A dual grand slam champion, Kerber has struggled throughout the European claycourt season with just two wins from six matches.

And it quickly became clear the left-hander had severe confidence issues as Makarova pummeled her with ballistic forehand drives.

Her departure notionally simplifies Stosur’s passage.

The Queenslander was seeded to face Kerber in the fourth round but, on the evidence of her latest display, Makarova could be even more dangerous.

Inflicting Kerber’s 13th loss from only 32 matches this year, Makarova hit 27 winners to Kerber’s 16 but had only 19 unforced errors to her opponent’s 25.

Also a first-round casualty here last year when she wasn’t ranked No 1, Kerber could now lose her ranking crown to either Karolina Pliskova or Simona Halep.

Olympic champion Monica Puig advanced 6-3 3-6 6-2 over Italian 31st seed Roberta Vinci, while Swiss 30th seed Timea Bacsinszky thumped Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-1 6-1.

A former semi-finalist in Paris, Bacsinszky next plays American Madison Brengle, a 1-6 6-3 13-11 victor over German Julia Georges.

Eugenie Bouchard may have found her groove.

After beating rival Maria Sharapova on Monday, the Canadian prevailed 6-3, 5-0 (retired) over top-seeded Angelique Kerber on Wednesday at the Madrid Open.

Bouchard has now won four of six matches against the German. Three of those victories have come in six straight sets.

After losing six straight tour-level matches following the U.S. Open, Bouchard now owns a three-match winning streak in Madrid.

On Wednesday, it was Kerber finding herself on the wrong end of Bouchard’s new-found confidence before retiring with a left thigh injury down 5-0 in the second set.

Bouchard defeated Sharapova Monday for the first time by taking advantage of the Russian’s 49 unforced errors and struggles on serve, including nine double faults. The victory backed up Bouchard’s comments referring to Sharapova as a cheater who should be banned for life.

Bouchard defeated Alize Cornet in three sets in the first round.

She is set to face eighth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova on Thursday in the quarter-finals.

Raonic advances

Earlier Wednesday, Raonic moved on to the men’s third round with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller.

The world No. 6 from Thornhill, Ont., never faced break point and broke Muller twice on five opportunities. Raonic, seeded fifth in Madrid, will next face ninth seed David Goffin of Belgium on Thursday.

Raonic is playing in his second tournament since returning to action following a hamstring injury. He advanced to the final of the Istanbul Open last week before losing to Marin Cilic.
