The story of Kenya's only men's hockey team has hit the internet right in the feels. With only enough players to create one team, the Kenya Ice Lions had never played a game against an opponent — until now. In a three-minute video sponsored by Tim Hortons' called "The Away Game", the Ice Lions make their way to Canada and are greeted by new custom jerseys and full sets of gear. But the day gets even better when the Kenyan players realize they'll be joined on the ice by Pittsburgh Penguins' captain Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche, both of whom have endorsement deals with the coffee shop company.
"I couldn't say anything," Arnold Mburu told the Toronto Sun. "I had no idea. We were all dressed up and because we were a few guys short, they told us they are going to get extra guys. But then Crosby walks in. And MacKinnon's face is right behind them. And I can't believe it." The setting was a huge change from the Ice Lions' home rink in Nairobi, Kenya. The first ice rink in East and Central Africa, it has no boards and is just 1,400 square metres in size. The moment was something special for Crosby and MacKinnon as well. "One of the things I love about hockey is how it's able to reach so many people from so many countries around the world and bring them together," Crosby said in a statement about the event. More than 225,000 people have already watched the video on YouTube, and thousands more have voiced their support on Twitter. Kiprono, 30, was moving in on the finish line when he was struck by a car that had ignored closed street signs, according to reports. Arboleda was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. In a tweet, the organizers expressed their condolences to the runner’s friends and family. Elsewhere on Sunday, Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge smashed the men’s marathon world record in Berlin, finishing in two hours, one minute and 39 seconds – shaving more than a minute off the previous record.

NAIROBI (Reuters) – Kenyan police killed at least 33 people in the capital during a crackdown following elections in August, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch said on Monday.
Excessive force by police against protesters and residents in strongholds of opposition leader Raila Odinga caused the deaths in Nairobi, the report said.
President Uhuru Kenyatta defeated Odinga in the Aug. 8 election and days of protests followed. The Supreme Court last month voided the election citing procedural irregularities and ordered a re-run, which is to be held on Oct. 26.
“Researchers found that although police behaved appropriately in some instances, in many others they shot or beat protesters to death.”
The report is likely to bolster the case of Kenyan activists and rights groups who accuse police of brutality and extrajudicial killings but say few officers are charged and convictions are extremely rare.
Police spokesman Charles Owino did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Police have said only looters and thugs were killed or injured in the violence.
The report said a 9-year-old was shot dead while standing on a balcony and a woman who was eight months pregnant fainted from inhaling teargas and was trampled to death.
The parents of a six-month-old baby told Reuters during the violence their child was clubbed by police in her home and died from brain trauma at a hospital several days later.
Odinga withdrew last week from the re-run saying the vote would not be fair, leaving Kenyatta as the only candidate. The president said the election would proceed.
Political uncertainty has blunted growth in Kenya, a Western ally that has East Africa’s richest economy.

For the past two weeks, police used tear gas to disperse opposition demonstrations held twice weekly in the country’s three biggest cities. The protesters had been calling on the election board to make reforms to ensure a fair poll.
On Thursday the government banned demonstrations in the central business district of Nairobi, the coastal city of Mombasa and the western city of Kisumu.
A group of U.N. human rights experts called for the government’s ban on protests to be listed and denounced a “pattern of police brutality” in response to recent demonstrations.
The report brings the nationwide number of killings by police after the Aug. 8 vote to more than 45. Human Rights Watch last month documented 12 killings by police in western Kenya, the main opposition stronghold.
The country receives substantial financial support for its security services from the United States, Britain and other international donors.

Silantoi doesn’t campaign like a regular politician because she isn’t one. At just 23, the musician-turned-activist is the youngest-ever senatorial candidate in Nairobi and, to many, she represents a budding revolution in Kenyan politics.
Granted, Silantoi has chosen a difficult time to run for office. This year’s election has very high stakes. The fear of violence looms over the campaign and both presidential candidates are fighting for their legacy. Raila Odinga, the perennial opposition leader, is making his last stab at the presidency, while incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta is desperate to avoid becoming Kenya’s first one-term president.

At the regional level, 14,550 other candidates are competing in the August 8 election for positions in Parliament and the Senate. And Nairobi City County — home to 4 million people and 60 percent of the country’s GDP — is a prized seat.
Silantoi is challenging seven other aspirants — all significantly older men. And she is taking the route least traveled, running as an independent candidate, campaigning car door–to–car door and crowdfunding every penny of her campaign budget through mobile payments from supporters.
Kenyans are not keen to try new things during this election, especially when there is fear of violence.
Justin Willis, professor of history at Durham University
“We can’t keep electing the same type of politicians and expecting different results,” says Silantoi, sitting in a coffee shop in downtown Nairobi. Most candidates meet the press in five-star hotels, but she was in the neighborhood. It’s only 9 a.m. and this is already her third meeting, yet she insists she’s not tired. “I’ll probably crash after the election, but now we’re running on adrenaline,” she laughs, nursing a mug of lemon ginger tea to soothe her sore throat.

She looks her age — and many criticize her for it, arguing she can’t possibly have enough experience to govern. Indeed, Silantoi has never held public office or even studied a relevant subject. She is an artist. The daughter of well-off consultants, Silantoi is an accomplished pianist with a degree in music who always wanted to be of service, something music alone didn’t satisfy. So when a position opened at a local health care nonprofit three years ago, she took it — and the job changed her. “Seeing how deeply underserved Nairobians truly are, despite the city’s vast resources, made me realize the need for honest people to take our place in running things.”
So she began to study, poring over state budgets and obscure Senate provisions. And her outrage grew. Now, she sounds like an exasperated accountant talking about all the ways in which Nairobi’s budget is being squandered — from the misallocation of youth development funds to the cash the city should be collecting from park meters, which, she estimates, would be enough to cover its entire health care bill.
This analytical thinking is what wooed many voters who watched her take part in the Nairobi senatorial debate on July 21. “She was so eloquent!” says Jedidiah Kimathi, a 36-year-old taxi driver. “Suzanne is exactly what this city needs, an independent voice that will refuse to be corrupted.“
Silantoi believes her age is an advantage because Kenya has a very young voter base. Fifty-one percent of voters are under 35, yet only 13 percent of political candidates are in that age group. “We can’t assume young voters will choose a candidate just because she is young,” says Justin Willis, a professor of history and an expert on Kenyan politics at Durham University in England, “but it is important to have someone who is championing their issues and can be an example for the next generation.”
Age is not the only thing that sets Silantoi apart. She also considers herself a “tribeless” candidate — a bold statement in a country with 42 tribes, where electoral agendas are often set along ethnic lines. This tribe-first mentally fueled the postelectoral violence in 2007–08 and threatens to disrupt this year’s election.
Silantoi’s call for ending tribal favoritism is resonating with many young Kenyans clamoring for accountability instead of ethnic clientelism. “What Suzanne is trying to do is a very difficult thing, but that is why it’s so meaningful,” says Shikoh Kihika, founder of Tribeless Youth, an organization working to promote peace and civic engagement.

To be sure, there are countless obstacles in the way of the aspiring senator — from a dwindling marketing budget to misogyny and voter skepticism. “Kenyans are not keen to try new things during this election, especially when there is fear of violence,” Willis explains.
Polls show Silantoi ranking third out of seven, behind the two candidates from both major parties. A victory, in her eyes. “Change won’t come quick, but we are making headway,” she says.
So what will she do after tomorrow’s election? “Campaigning has only reaffirmed my commitment to serve,” she says, “so I will. …” Her assistant interrupts us. “You haven’t finished your tea? We have to go!” As Silantoi gets whisked away to another meet and greet, she turns to chug the rest of her cold ginger tea and says, “I will not leave politics. This is our time. And I’m just getting started.”

The remote town of Iten has gained an international reputation as the breeding ground for Kenyan running champions like Wilson Kipsang, David Rudisha and Florence Kiplagat. Now, a ragtag crew of enthusiasts is looking to see if this region can produce stars in another sport: pro cycling. Their immediate goal is to get a handful of Kenyans into the Tour de France (currently underway). Their ultimate goal will take longer: grooming the Kenyan Riders to become the first all-Black African team to compete in cycling’s biggest race.

On this rainy May morning, the objective was attainable, if daunting: Cycle up 3,000 feet over 7 miles in less than 30 minutes. The rickety black mambas are a far cry from racing bikes, but they’re what Kenyans know.
Those on road bikes represented about half of the Kenyan Riders — a development team that hopes to send its best cyclists to the German-funded Bike Aid team, which itself aims to get African athletes into the Tour de France. At least three Kenyan Riders expect to make it: Suleiman Kangangi, Salim Kipkemboi and Geoffrey Langat. “I have a dream that in the future, we’re going to make cycling like how running is in Kenya,” Langat, a 26-year-old with a slight frame and surprising power, said after the race.
There’s no reason physically that a Kenyan cannot match a European cyclist.
Ciarán Fitzpatrick, coach of the Kenyan Riders
On the black mambas, Rashid Kosgei was among the first to break into the lead. “Rashid was awkward and showed almost no sign of talent when he started coming with his brother,” said Ciarán Fitzpatrick, the team’s mild-mannered Irish coach, as he trailed his riders in a car. “He’s far better than what I expected when I first saw him, which I suppose is a lesson.”

But that day’s lesson was for the Kenyan Riders, none of whom beat the 30-minute target by the end of the race. They made their way back to the training camp, weary and deflated.
“I think they can get to the top; there’s no reason physically that a Kenyan cannot match a European cyclist,” Fitzpatrick says. He’s willing to concede that the team lags behind in terms of hard skills and tactics, but “for the amount of power they can output for certain lengths of time, we’re not far behind.”
Nicholas Leong, the Singaporean who started the Kenyan Riders team, first came to Kenya in 2005, following a group of Kenyan runners who had competed in the Singapore Marathon. He was working as a commercial photographer, but cycling was his obsession since childhood. Over time, he became fixed on the question of whether the genetic gifts and elevation training that makes Kenyans superhuman runners could translate to cycling. “I wondered why cycling was just the last sport to become inclusive,” he says.
At the time, Kenya had nothing resembling a biking culture — as opposed to Europe, where pro cyclists are known to say they started riding soon after taking their first steps. Leong’s method for finding talent was unorthodox. A heavy guy, he would stand at the bottom of an especially steep hill and ask one of the local bike-taxi guys to deliver him to the top as fast as possible. “And I would time them,” Leong says with a half-smile.

“The thing that wins you the Tour de France is being able to climb, and a climbing specialist is built like a Kenyan marathon runner,” he explains. But most Kenyans he met barely knew how to ride a bike.
As Leong began looking for sponsors to support a fledgling team, Fitzpatrick arrived in Iten from Ireland in 2007 to train as a runner. That career stalled, but he fell in love with the area and learned Swahili. Soon, Leong had brought him on as a cycling coach. “Nicholas figured I knew running and knew Kenya, so I could learn cycling,” Fitzpatrick says.
Assessing the task before them, Leong and Fitzpatrick are both clear-eyed and upbeat. “A team of cyclists that has an East African focus — that’s possible within the next three to five years,” says Leong. “A full Kenyan team is some ways off.”

Paul Sherwen, a seven-time Tour de France contender who’s now an expert cycling analyst for the event, agrees with that time line, noting that Chris Froome, the Tour’s three-time winner, spent most of his life in Kenya, even if he competed for the U.K. “I sincerely believe we can have a Black Kenyan rider in the Tour de France in the near future,” he says. “To get a team, the fast-track way to do it would be an East African team.”
The morning after the training race in Iten, Leong sat down for bacon and eggs with Brother Colm O’Connell, a revered local figure for having coached dozens of Kenyan runners who became Olympic gold medalists and world champions. “Don’t see potential; just be open to it,” O’Connell said.
Leong turned the conversation to the King of the Mountain race later this year in Taiwan, where he expects the grueling, uphill course would play to his team’s strengths. Even if the Tour de France dream is years off, he hopes a Kenyan Rider will bring home prize money from Taiwan — and then inspire the next Chris Froome to pick up a bike. “When people start coming back with meaningful amounts of money,” says Leong, “that’s when cycling will start catching on.”

Footage of an extrajudicial killing of a young man reportedly shot multiple times by police has caused outrage in Kenya, sparking an investigation into the shooting.
The video shows an undercover police officer shooting at two young man on a busy street in Nairobi’s Eastleigh on Friday. One of the men was killed in the incident.
The footage is taken from a nearby balcony. An officer, dressed in a maroon polo shirt, is seen grabbing a young man as a crowd watches. Another man is lying bleeding on the ground next to them.
The officer shoots the gun six times as the camera cuts to the balcony from where the woman is filming. She can be heard screaming over the gunfire.
When the camera pans back to the street, the man is on the ground and the officer is pinning him down with his foot, as another man in a striped shirt passes him a new gun and takes the original one.
The man aims his gun at the man on the ground and five gunshots ring out as the camera shakes. The man appears to reload his gun before returning to his victim – who is still moving – to fire another bullet in his back.
According to local media, the dead men are believed to have belonged to the Gaza or Superpower gangs notorious for robberies and killings in the area. Police had reportedly been chasing the two men before the shooting took place.
Another video shows the scene from a closer vantage point, and appears to have been taken just before the above footage was captured.
It shows the other man lying on the ground and the officers and the victim arguing. The man in maroon is seen punching the boy, who then puts his hands up in surrender. The officers remove a weapon from his trousers.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet condemned the violence and ordered a probe into the incident and the officers involved in the act.
“I have ordered thorough investigations on the shooting incident that occurred in Eastleigh,” he told Capital FM News. “I have seen the video and I condemn those actions. Investigations have already started and I can assure you action will be taken against officers involved.”
To some, the killings were warranted given the violence reportedly committed by the gangs.
According to Tujo.co.ke, the officers were part of Pangani 9 branch of special police and were looking for gang members who killed a fellow police officer in Kayole.

Police commander Japheth Koome, who originally claimed the video was “not true, it was acted,” said the suspect was wanted for killing two police officers.
“I buried a corporal from Kayole yesterday. The same gangsters shot dead another officer yesterday,” he said. “Tell all gangsters out there that when they kill an officer I am ruthless and they will get it from me.”
