In totally Unrelated news, Freeform has abruptly pulled the plug on black-ish creator Kenya Barris‘ latest comedy offering.

According to our sister site Deadline, Unrelated (fka Besties) — which centered on two estranged half sisters (played by Jordin Sparks and Gigi Zumbado) who are thrown into each other’s lives via an online genetics test — has been axed before a single episode was even shot.

Freeform ordered the sitcom to series last year; the cast was finalized in February. The network is expected to redevelop the premise with a new writer.

The project has experienced its fair share of growing pains in the past year. As noted by Deadline, Everybody Hates Chris scribe Aeysha Carr replaced Real O’Neals co-creators Casey Johnson and David Windsor as showrunner in April.

Barris, meanwhile, is now firmly entrenched at Netflix. Last August, the prolific writer-producer inked a multi-year production deal with the streamer. The first series under that pact — the single-camera comedy Black Excellence — will find Barris working behind and in front of the camera.

A village in Kenya is quietly disproving the biggest myth about basic income https://briefnews.eu/a-village-in-kenya-is-quietly-disproving-the-biggest-myth-about-basic-income/ https://briefnews.eu/a-village-in-kenya-is-quietly-disproving-the-biggest-myth-about-basic-income/#respond Sun, 31 Dec 2017 09:21:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-village-in-kenya-is-quietly-disproving-the-biggest-myth-about-basic-income/ edwine odongo anyangoChris Weller/Business Insider

  • A 12-year basic income experiment in Kenya is showing that people typically spend free cash on necessities.
  • Contrary to prevailing myths, people don’t seem to work less or waste the money on vices like alcohol.
  • More research will eventually reveal whether these initial findings are an anomaly or the typical experience of someone receiving basic income.

KENYA — Maurice Owiti is 47 years old and works as a caregiver in a rural Kenyan village. In a poor community such as his, Owiti is lucky to have a job. But until late 2016, spending even $ 20 a month on school fees for his son was a struggle.

Then a charity called GiveDirectly showed up in October and announced to Owiti and dozens of other residents that they’d be receiving $ 22 a month for the next 12 years. It was part of an experiment in basic income, a system that involves giving people a standard salary just for being alive, no strings attached. (At GiveDirectly’s request, Business Insider has concealed the Kenyan village’s name and location to protect the recipients there.)

As basic income has gained mainstream interest as a way to reduce poverty, people have started speculating how it might play out on a large scale. Would the system make people work more or less? Would they spend all the money immediately? Where would the funds come from?

A myth gets proven wrong, one transfer at a time

In the 13 months since GiveDirectly began its experiment, Owiti and his fellow villagers have slowly and quietly been disproving the biggest misconception about basic income — that people who receive free money will stop working and waste the cash on vices like gambling, drugs, or alcohol.

Anecdotal evidence and nearly all empirical research has shown that unconditional cash transfers help people help themselves. Recipients often use the income to pay for their kids’ school fees, buy medicine, repair their homes, and invest in their small businesses to further grow their wealth. While some use the money for so-called “temptation goods,” as economists call them, the majority of recipients defy the stereotype that people in poverty somehow lack moral character or responsibility.

As advocates often claim, what the poor seem to suffer from is actually a lack of cash.

“If this money were to be given to everybody, this would be a very good thing,” Edwin Odongo Anyango, a 30-year-old recipient in Kenya, told Business Insider.

Anyango earns money mostly through manual labor jobs. He said the basic income money has enabled him to buy milk on a more consistent basis and pay for his child’s preschool fees. His wife, also a recipient, has put the money into her business selling secondhand clothes.

“What this money does is it creates hope,” Anyango said. “And when people have hope, they are happy.”

Caroline Teti, the field director for GiveDirectly, works with villagers on a near-daily basis to make sure the experiment is running smoothly. The study expanded to include dozens more villages and thousands more people in mid-November, but so far Teti has only observed a few people who seem to misuse the money.

Even those, she said, tend to split the money between practical purchases and indulgences.

“People have needs,” Teti said. “Especially in poor communities such as this, if they get a basic income, it goes directly into those needs.”

The abuses are few and far between

Agrippa Agida Onywero Krispo, a 40-year-old day laborer, said he’s used the money for small home repairs and new shoes. He’s also used it for gambling and to record a CD of him singing. Recently, the money he put toward the CD was stolen by his recording partner, who disappeared when it came time to sell the freshly made copies.

“I think for my next project, I am going to be more careful,” Krispo said. “I’m not going to make the same mistake, because I think about that money that I put into the production, that I can’t now get back. And I feel very angry.”

Other research has found that people’s spending on alcohol and cigarettes actually went down when they received direct cash transfers. Faced with a brighter future, many people stop using temptation goods as a way to cope with a hopeless situation, researchers have discovered. In the village GiveDirectly is working with, interviews with nearly a dozen recipients showed that most people have actually worked more since the study began.

The research isn’t conclusive, however. There is still a possibility that follow-up studies will find GiveDirectly recipients used their cash on vices after covering their basic needs.

But so far, the findings are hopeful. When people in need are given the means to improve their lives, that’s exactly where the money goes.

Kenya could be the heart of moon colonization, says ‘The Martian’ author Andy Weir — here’s why https://briefnews.eu/kenya-could-be-the-heart-of-moon-colonization-says-the-martian-author-andy-weir-heres-why/ https://briefnews.eu/kenya-could-be-the-heart-of-moon-colonization-says-the-martian-author-andy-weir-heres-why/#respond Tue, 14 Nov 2017 19:17:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kenya-could-be-the-heart-of-moon-colonization-says-the-martian-author-andy-weir-heres-why/ kenya africa moon animals safari night darkness shutterstock_447131782Shutterstock

  • Andy Weir, author of “The Martian,” released a novel called “Artemis” on Tuesday.
  • In the book, tourists get to the moon by launching in spaceships from Kenya.
  • Weir thinks building a lunar spaceport in an African country isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds.
  • Kenya could circumvent out-of-date US space regulations, launch rockets with less fuel, and improve the economics of space travel.

Kenya isn’t the first country you’d think of to locate a spaceport for launching people to and from the moon, but in “Artemis“, a new sci-fi novel by “The Martian” author Andy Weir, that is precisely the case.

Weir’s tale takes place during the 2080s at Artemis — humanity’s first and only lunar city. It’s a riveting story about a high-stakes heist featuring Jasmine “Jazz” Bashara, a Saudi-born woman and witty smuggler who has lived inside the aluminum bubbles of Artemis since she was a kid.

moon colony lunar city illustration artemis sci-fi novel andy weirSamantha Lee/Business InsiderTrue to Weir’s typical style, the book is built around real-life science, engineering, and — at least this time around — economics. He says the point of doing this is to make his stories seem more real, and thus engaging and entertaining.

But if that’s the case, why skip an established space center like Cape Canaveral, Fla., and start fresh in Kenya?

“One of the biggest impediments to the commercial space industry right now isn’t technology, its policy,” Weir told Business Insider. “I’ve listened to the things that commercial space companies have said — I’ve been at SpaceX a few times — and the consistent thing that pretty much everybody says is, it is such a pain in the ass to deal with the policies. That’s always their biggest problem.”

Kenya, however, doesn’t really have such rules — which could make it the perfect place to base an enormously expensive lunar-launch facility.

Our spaceflight regulations are out of date

The disdain against spaceflight regulations is not for wont to skip safety rules, says Weir — far from it: A safe track record is one of the most valuable assets of a space business.

What he’s talking about are sometimes strange rules created in the 1950s and 1960s to satisfy the Outer Space Treaty, which curtails weaponizing spacecraft, among other concerns. But it couldn’t plan too much for the rapid advance of space technologies.

“In the US, which is kind of in the forefront of commercial space, we have a whole bunch of really antiquated rules — like 50, 60 years old,” Weir said. “And they’re really, really out-of-date.”

As an example, Weir mentioned the work of Moon Express team, which is trying to win the Google Lunar X Prize by launching a robot to the moon and beaming live video.

moon express landerNASA/Moon Express

“They’ve gotten to the point where they can do it for about $ 300,000” by shrinking down electronics and hitching a ride in a normally unused part of a powerful rocket, Weir said.

“But one of the rules, one of the laws, is ‘Hey, if you’re gonna launch from from the US, then you have to be able to communicate on these FM frequencies … ‘so that we can monitor it and ensure that you’re not violating the treaty,” Weir said.

These days, however, many smaller, more efficient, and higher-bandwidth radio technologies exist, and Moon Express plans to use one of them to win millions of dollars.

“And so what sucks is that this ball of requirements is … they also have to have this other clunky radio that just sucks their battery dry aboard, to meet this kind of arbitrary and ludicrously out-of-date rule,” Weir said, significantly adding to their spacecraft’s size and weight. “And it’s really holding them up.”

Kenya has launch appeal

That’s why in “Artemis”, Weir routes all passengers and cargo to the moon through the fictional Kenya Space Corporation.

“So what I thought was, there are market forces at play that people haven’t tapped into yet, and reducing policy could bring a space industry to your country,” Weir said. “And so that’s what Kenya did [in my book] — Kenya said like, ‘Hey we have two things that people want: we can set policy to be as friendly as possible for a space industry, and we’re on the equator.'”

Being located as close to the equator for rocket launches is not a new idea. Author Jules Verne had the foresight in his 1865 novel “From the Earth to the Moon” to place a fictional US location for launching a bullet to the lunar surface near Cape Canaveral.

The closer one is the equator, the less fuel it takes to make it to orbit.

Photographers take pictures as the Soyuz MS-04 spacecraft carrying the crew of Jack Fischer of the U.S. and Fyodor Yurchikhin of Russia blasts off to the International Space Station (ISS) from the launchpad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, April 20, 2017. REUTERS/Shamil ZhumatovThomson Reuters“By being on the equator, that makes launching cheaper because you get 500 meters per second of the Earth’s rotational speed for free, which is a big deal,” Weir said. “So within the story the idea is they said, ‘We’ll commandeer the land … We will tax you less than you get taxed anywhere else. You don’t have to worry about union rules, you can do whatever you want…’ Just as pro-business-friendly as they possibly could be. And within the story, that works.”

Weir said he considered other countries for placing his fictional KSC launch complex, like Brazil, but ultimately stuck with Kenya because it seemed more interesting.

“Of the African countries on the equator Kenya it is the most advanced, in terms of economics. They have the strongest economy, they have the most stable government, and so on,” Weir said. “Artemis was built about 50 years from now, so I can say, ‘Oh yeah, things got a lot more stable in Africa.'”

He added that other Cold War-era US rules also made Kenya an appealing location by not applying.

“One of the main things is that every [employee] has to be American citizens … Also, you’re not allowed to cooperate or work with China in any way, which is kind of rough if you want to do some sort of mass-production, right?” Weir said.

“It’s just this huge pain in the ass that’s set up for a world where only governments do space missions,” he said. “So it would be nice if that didn’t exist.

Kenya just became the third country in the world to nullify a presidential election result https://briefnews.eu/kenya-just-became-the-third-country-in-the-world-to-nullify-a-presidential-election-result/ https://briefnews.eu/kenya-just-became-the-third-country-in-the-world-to-nullify-a-presidential-election-result/#respond Fri, 01 Sep 2017 14:43:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kenya-just-became-the-third-country-in-the-world-to-nullify-a-presidential-election-result/ kenya presidential election invalidBaz Ratner/Reuters

History was made on 1 September, 2017 in Kenya after the presidential elections was declared null and void.

Kenya became the first country in Africa to nullify a presidential election after the country’s Supreme Court on Friday nullified the August 8 presidential elections which declared the incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta winner.

The Supreme Court found out that Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) breached the constitution in the transmission of the election results and therefore ruled the results invalid.

The court has called for a rerun of the presidential elections within 60 days as stated in the constitution.

Globally, Kenya joins Austria and Maldives to become the only countries so far to cancel presidential results.

In 2016, Austria’s highest court annulled the result of the presidential election won by the former leader of the Greens, Alexander Van der Bellen, by just 30,863 votes or less than one percentage point.

In 2013, Maldivian supreme court annulled the results of the September 7 presidential election and ordered a fresh one.

Kenya’s presidential verdict is likely to have a spiral effect across the continent and inspire other courts to follow suit whenever they feel elections were not free and fair.

Trading floor of the future

MOBILE money is ubiquitous in Kenya. Someone tapping on their phone might be paying school fees, sending money home or donating to a church. Soon they might be trading bonds. On June 30th the Kenyan government was due to launch M-Akiba, the world’s first sovereign bond to be sold exclusively through mobile platforms.

The bond is marketed at small investors, who will not need a bank account to take part. They can register on their phone in a few minutes and invest as little as 3,000 shillings ($ 29), far less than the 50,000 shillings needed to buy other treasury bonds. “Akiba” means savings in Kiswahili. The government is keen to promote thrift and is offering a juicy 10% annual return on the three-year bond, about three percentage points above deposit rates at commercial banks. Coupon payments are made through mobile money.

A pilot offer in March lured over 100,000 people to register. But only 5,692 of them went…

‘Black-ish’ Creator Kenya Barris Joins Moshe Kasher for an Insightful Discussion of Cultural Appropriation https://briefnews.eu/black-ish-creator-kenya-barris-joins-moshe-kasher-for-an-insightful-discussion-of-cultural-appropriation/ https://briefnews.eu/black-ish-creator-kenya-barris-joins-moshe-kasher-for-an-insightful-discussion-of-cultural-appropriation/#respond Wed, 19 Apr 2017 15:52:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/black-ish-creator-kenya-barris-joins-moshe-kasher-for-an-insightful-discussion-of-cultural-appropriation/ As a hip-hop-obsessed Jewish kid growing up in Oakland in the 1980s and ’90s, Moshe Kasher knows a little something about cultural appropriation, which was the topic of last night’s debut episode of his new Comedy Central talk show, Problematic with Moshe Kasher. Like A&E’s Black and White, on which hosts Sherrod Small and Christian Finnegan conducted awkward, necessary, and often funny conversations about race in America, Problematic invites guests and audience members to take part in deliberately uncomfortable, and hopefully entertaining, discussions about controversial issues.

Black-ish creator Kenya Barris has already demonstrated his willingness to “go there” (see: Black-ish, and also this much-needed public shutdown of the “diversity” question), so it wasn’t surprising to see him on last night’s premiere. Barris, whose own family was the inspiration for the Johnson clan on Black-ish, described growing up in Inglewood, broke, as did his wife — “she’s mixed,” he added, “so she was kind of white-broke.” (“I’m Jewish, raised on welfare,” Kasher interjected. “Very, very rare. If you catch me I’ll grant you a wish but I’m very tricky.”)

Barris continued: “We got married and had kids and I looked around and they were not what I remember little black kids being. They were a bit more black-ish. But then all their little white friends who would be at the house were a little bit more black. They were a little bit black-ish, too.” The difference between his generation and his children’s, he said, is that now, the fact that white kids like to “dress black” and listen to rap music is totally out in the open.

Some degree of cultural appropriation is inevitable in this country, and Barris and Kasher nimbly tease out the question of when it’s offensive to adopt another culture’s styles and traditions, and when it’s not. Cultural appropriation, Barris said, is “a borrowing” of such traditions, and is fine as long as the appropriator is fully aware of what it is she’s wearing or doing or saying, and what it means in context. He explained:

That’s not to say you shouldn’t wear cornrows. That’s not to say you shouldn’t wear a [Native American] headdress. Acknowledge it. You know what I’m saying? Acknowledge it, that’s all I’m saying. That’s the part of what makes America great — we’re greatest when we’re sort of mixed in, when we understand and acknowledge each culture has something that we bring to what this place is.

“It’s not really about the cornrows, it’s not about the Native American headdress. It’s everything that happened underneath the cornrows and the headdress for the last 500 years,” Kasher summed up. “The issue underneath the issue is always the power dynamic.”
