The record-vying distributed denial-of-service attacks keep coming, with two mitigation services reporting they encountered some of the biggest data bombardments ever by threat actors whose tactics and techniques are constantly evolving.

On Monday, Imperva said it defended a customer against an attack that lasted more than four hours and peaked at more than 3.9 million requests per second (RPS).

In all, the attackers directed 25.3 billion requests at the target with an average rate of 1.8 million RPS. While DDoSes exceeding 1 million RPS are growing increasingly common, they typically come in shorter bursts that measure in seconds or a few minutes at most.

Big gaming companies get DHS help to keep players from becoming terrorists

Last December, the United Nations warned of an overlooked but critical “emerging terrorist threat”: extremists radicalizing members of online gaming communities.

Despite ample interest in saving gamers from such exploitation, experts say that a lack of research funding on the topic has put the gaming industry behind social networks when it comes to counterterrorism efforts. That’s starting to change, though. Within the past week, researchers told Ars that the US Department of Homeland Security has, for the first time, awarded funding—nearly $ 700,000—to a research group working directly with major gaming companies to develop effective counterterrorism methods and protect vulnerable gamers.

The new project will span two years. It’s spearheaded by Middlebury College’s Institute of International Studies, which hosts the Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism (CTEC). Vice reported that other partners include a nonprofit called Take This—which focuses on gaming impacts on mental health—and a tech company called Logically—which Vice says works “to solve the problem of bad online behavior at scale.”

Trump accused Biden of scheming to keep gas prices down but they’ve been in steady decline for months: ‘Right after the election it’s going to double’ https://briefnews.eu/trump-accused-biden-of-scheming-to-keep-gas-prices-down-but-theyve-been-in-steady-decline-for-months-right-after-the-election-its-going-to-double/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-accused-biden-of-scheming-to-keep-gas-prices-down-but-theyve-been-in-steady-decline-for-months-right-after-the-election-its-going-to-double/#respond Sun, 18 Sep 2022 07:43:27 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/trump-accused-biden-of-scheming-to-keep-gas-prices-down-but-theyve-been-in-steady-decline-for-months-right-after-the-election-its-going-to-double/ Former President Donald Trump takes the stage at a campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio., Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022.
Former President Donald Trump takes the stage at a campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio., Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022.

  • Former President Donald Trump slammed President Joe Biden for lowering gas prices.
  • Trump claimed the decrease was a politically motivated scheme.
  • "Right after the election, it's going to double up and go higher than anybody ever believed," Trump claimed.

Former President Donald Trump, while in Ohio to rally support for Republican Senate candidate JD Vance, slammed President Joe Biden for the recent decline in national gas prices.

Speaking at the 7,000-seat Covelli Centre in Youngstown, Trump — who himself schemed in an effort to overturn the 2020 election — claimed that shrinking gas prices are a ploy Biden is using for political gain.

In a tweet, the White House recognized Saturday as the 95th day in which gas prices have steadily declined since reaching record highs earlier this year. According to the White House, the national average for a gallon of gas sits at $ 3.68.

The administration — and Biden himself — have claimed that the drop in prices is the steepest decline in more than a decade. Insider was unable to independently verify the claim.

Trump slammed Biden for going into the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve to release crude in an effort to ease overpriced gas despite the reserve being "only for war." But Trump did the same during his administration when Saudi Arabia's crude production drastically decreased following attacks on its production facilities, per CNBC.

"He's using that to keep prices down as much as he can just before the election and right after the election, it's going to double up and go higher than anybody ever believed," Trump claimed at the rally on Saturday.

Trump claimed the current average is still "double and triple" what it was during his administration.

The Associated Press reported the national average was as low as $ 1.87 per gallon during May 2020, but the outlet attributed the low cost mostly to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

While the crowd cheered during Trump's rant on the current status of gas prices, some supporters didn't seem too bothered.

When an interviewer from Right Side Broadcasting Network pushed a woman clad in a pro-Trump hat to say the gas prices for her 5.5-hour drive were bad, the woman didn't agree.

"Wasn't too bad," the supporter said of the gas prices.

A spokesperson for Trump did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Sorry, Google — Apple is right to keep ignoring RCS for the iPhone https://briefnews.eu/sorry-google-apple-is-right-to-keep-ignoring-rcs-for-the-iphone/ https://briefnews.eu/sorry-google-apple-is-right-to-keep-ignoring-rcs-for-the-iphone/#respond Thu, 15 Sep 2022 11:45:58 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/sorry-google-apple-is-right-to-keep-ignoring-rcs-for-the-iphone/ With the release of iOS 16, Apple sees its Messages app pick up a slew of notable updates with one notable exception: RCS (Rich Chat Services).

Despite Google’s continued attempts at public shaming, the iPhone maker has covered its ears and steadily plowed around in building out its own fairly successful messaging service. After a look at the state of RCS in 2022, this may just have been the right choice.

RCS is still a mess

rcs google

Let’s do a quick recap of what RCS is. It’s an update to the SMS standard that’s powered by a mixture of Google and a handful of global carriers. It brings modern features like typing indicators, read receipts, and high res image support to regular texting. It has been pointedly ignored by Apple, killing its utility as an SMS replacement between iPhones and Android phones.

Although Google has pushed for RCS to come to the iPhone and replace SMS time after time, Apple’s response has simply been a flat-out “seen.” The benefits are clear for Google. Being a “green bubble” wouldn’t necessarily be a source of shame if RCS were to land. Apple’s refusal here seems remarkably reticent until you read the fine print.

Google

Only 20% of Android users have been estimated to have access to RCS. This means that, despite the high installed base of Android, only a few users scattered worldwide will be able to take advantage of it — few being relative, of course.

Secondly, RCS is not necessarily a less confusing experience. Although it is nominally a carrier initiative, it is almost wholly run through Google’s servers. Some carriers like AT&T do have their own implementations. It’s an unstable mess resulting in a broken experience where two users on the same phone but with different carriers could end up with different versions of RCS. Even Google’s touted end-to-end encryption is only a feature of Google’s Messages app, not RCS itself.

Let them eat iPhones

Tim Cook unveiling the iPhone 13 at Apple's California Streaming event in September 2021.

“I don’t hear our users asking that we put a lot of energy in on that at this point,” Tim Cook was quoted as saying. “I would love to convert you to an iPhone.”

Cook’s response may seem unnecessary, but it does demonstrate one truth: there is choice. If you want interoperable messaging between Google and Apple devices, you can download Signal or WhatsApp. If you want an iMessage-replacement, well, you’re going to have to use iMessage on an iPhone. That Google’s own Chat service has yet to catch on and create an organic demand groundswell of its own is an indictment. It’s one thing to bank on potential. It’s another to try and fail.

“Apple is completely uninterested in RCS and doesn’t see any advantage in implementing it. I’d be surprised if they implemented it unless there was some sort of legal or standards-based mandate. Apple’s general stance on cross-platform messaging is that there are a ton of OTT choices which work great — WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Facebook — and so there’s no problem that needs to be solved here,” Sascha Segan, PCMag mobile analyst, told Digital Trends months ago. This analysis proved correct.

RCS doesn’t solve any problems for you or me

A hand holding a phone that shows app store listing for Snapchat app on its screen.

Although Google may paint its RCS goals as one of equity, the company is simply making a transparent ‘hail Mary’ play. RCS has been available for so long that my defunct Windows Phone can support it, provided it’s equipped with an RCS-compatible SIM. Notably, Google didn’t implement RCS then. Rather, only after the company failed in pushing proprietary messaging app after proprietary messaging app did it finally switch to RCS as the new best thing.

However, proprietary messaging apps are how people choose to communicate. They are often robust, agile in development, and already meet messaging needs worldwide with a secondary business infrastructure even blooming around apps like WhatsApp and Line. iMessage, despite being accessed in the Messages app, is more akin to Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp in implementation.

New features like Edit Message or Undo Send are possible because iMessage is proprietary. Certainly, RCS could be built out so that it can support such modern asks, but the very framework of the protocol means that it’ll take years to roll out. By then, the next big thing would already be here. Remember, RCS isn’t catching up to WhatsApp of today, it’s catching up to WhatsApp’s original release. Flashy features like end-to-end encryption and Google integration remain exclusive to Google’s Messages app. RCS is starting on a back foot, and it will always be on the back foot, and nothing about its chaotic implementation dispels that notion.

As iOS 16 drops, the conversation around iMessage and RCS reminds us that Apple’s biggest feature isn’t any singular feature — but ubiquity. The iPhone and iOS are everywhere, and users can be counted on to engage with them. Android, for all its very many advantages, doesn’t have that. If it did, then the conversation around RCS wouldn’t be happening. We would all be on Allo.

Top tax policy Democrat says Republicans want to keep the status quo so only ‘little guys’ get audited but ‘billionaire friends’ get off scot-free https://briefnews.eu/top-tax-policy-democrat-says-republicans-want-to-keep-the-status-quo-so-only-little-guys-get-audited-but-billionaire-friends-get-off-scot-free/ https://briefnews.eu/top-tax-policy-democrat-says-republicans-want-to-keep-the-status-quo-so-only-little-guys-get-audited-but-billionaire-friends-get-off-scot-free/#respond Thu, 08 Sep 2022 21:05:36 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/top-tax-policy-democrat-says-republicans-want-to-keep-the-status-quo-so-only-little-guys-get-audited-but-billionaire-friends-get-off-scot-free/ Ron Wyden
Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon speaks to reporters at the US Capitol.

  • Democrats' Inflation Reduction Act contains nearly $ 80 billion in funding for the IRS.
  • Republicans have said that the funding will go towards hiring an "army" of IRS agents.
  • Sen. Ron Wyden said that Republicans want to save their billionaire friends from audits.

The IRS is set to get nearly $ 80 billion from Democrats' big climate and tax spending package, earmarked to help the overstrained agency improve tax enforcement and customer service — and Republicans haven't been pleased.

Republicans have seized upon the idea that the increased funding could result in an "army" of 87,000 agents, although that number comes from a Treasury Department report estimating that the IRS could hire that many new employees by 2031, according to Time, and a Treasury Department official told Time that the majority of the new hires won't even be IRS agents.

"If Democrats are going to keep declaring everything to be free, Biden is going to need a lot more taxpayer money," Senator Rick Scott, a Republican from Florida, said in prepared floor remarks on Wednesday, speaking on his legislation to rescind the funding for the IRS. "That, my fellow Americans, is how we get full circle back to the supersized IRS. It's a vicious cycle to fund a radical, socialist agenda.

But Senator Ron Wyden, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, isn't humoring that argument.

"Even senators who should supposedly know better are spinning wild fantasy stories about 87,000 agents who are armed to the teeth and coming to the doors of innocent small business people," Wyden said in floor remarks on Wednesday.

Instead, he said, "by attacking the IRS, Republicans are helping high-flying tax cheats get away with breaking the law." The agency is "badly outmatched" by wealthy tax cheats, Wyden said; IRS commissioner Charles Rettig has said that the amount of taxes going uncollected every year could be upwards of $ 1 trillion. A 2021 study from IRS researchers and academics found that the top 1% of American earners did not report about 21% of their income.

"What so many Republicans want to do is preserve the status quo, so only the little guys get audited while billionaire friends" get off scot-free, Wyden said.

Instead, Wyden stressed that some of the funding would go towards customer service, something that the embattled agency has particularly struggled with since the onset of the pandemic. With a shrinking budget and low staffing levels compounded by new pandemic-era responsibilities like stimulus checks, the IRS accumulated a backlog of millions of unprocessed returns — which it's still digging its way out of. Those processing delays — paired with the IRS's inability to answer the phone and provide prompt customer service — have meant some Americans waited months to receive thousands in tax refunds.

"The far right and the wealthy tax cheats want the IRS to apparently continue to struggle because it makes it easier to attack and vilify. That's why we've heard so many falsehoods about thousands of new IRS agents," Wyden said. "I don't know where this number came from, absent nonsense, conjured out of nothing."

  • US stocks fell Tuesday, turning lower in the post-Labor Day session.
  • Stocks gave up earlier gains after a stronger-than-expected ISM services report.
  • That bolstered views that the Fed sees the economy as strong enough to take on more rate hikes.

US stocks closed with a loss Tuesday as investors saw a stronger-than-expected report on service-sector activity as providing further reason for rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.

The S&P 500 fell for a third straight session, led by losses in the consumer services and energy sectors. The decline was softened somewhat by gains among sectors considered defensive — real estate, utilities, and health care. Wall Street's major equity indexes have lost ground over the past three weeks.

Stocks gave up gains earlier Tuesday and Treasury yields rose after the Institute for Supply Management said its August index on service-sector activity rose to 56.9%. The reading outstripped Econoday's consensus estimate of 55.4% for activity that drives more than a third of US economic growth.

The Federal Reserve has indicated it sees the US economy slowing but strong enough to withstand more interest rate increases to pull down inflation toward its 2% target.

Here's where US indexes stood at the 4:00 p.m. closing bell on Tuesday:

"The combination of peak hawkishness from the Fed and the frustratingly slow pace at which inflation is cooling could continue to weigh on stocks for another month or more," LPL Financial strategists said in a note published Tuesday.

"Still, we could see potential upside for stocks over the balance of 2022. Some inflation relief is likely coming, which can help foster interest rate stability. Friday's jobs report that many are calling 'Goldilocks,' sets up some needed cooling of labor markets," they said.

Last Friday's jobs report showed the US added 315,000 payrolls in August, beating the forecast for 300,000 new jobs but down from July's scorching addition of 528,000 jobs.

Around the markets, Digital World Acquisition Corp. shares tumbled after the company gave its shareholders more time to vote on a proposal to extend a deadline to merge with Donald Trump's social media company. Truth Media & Technology Group runs the Truth Social networking app.

Nobel laureate Paul Krugman called for gradual interest-rate hikes to avoid crushing economic growth and employment.

Saudi Arabia is lowering oil prices for Asia and Europe but hiking them for most US buyers.

Oil prices tuned lower. West Texas Intermediate crude slipped 0.1% to $ 86.64 per barrel. Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell 0.2% to $ 92.69.

Gold fell by 0.7% to $ 1,711.40 per ounce. The 10-year Treasury yield increased by 14 basis points to 3.33%.

Bitcoin fell 4.5% to $ 18,848.12.

He explained: “To be honest with you, I told my agent immediately, and my agent was like, ‘OK, Tobes, don’t say anything, because, you know, we’ve still got to negotiate next year’s fee.'”

And when the actor tried to argue, his agent reiterated: “‘No, don’t say anything! Because we’ve got to negotiate next year’s fee.’

“So I was like, ‘Alright, cool. I’ll keep it under wraps.’”

However, at the end of season nine, Tobi felt it was the right time to let the show’s creators know his plans.

“I eventually just told my agent, ‘Look, man, I need to say something, because I want to make sure that it’s not going to be a story that’s not befitting of seven years on the show. I want them to build into it,’” he continued.
