Around 47,000 troops from the Japan Self-Defense Force have been joined by more than 10,000 US servicemen for the Keen Sword 19 military exercise – the biggest drill of its kind since the biennial joint maneuvers were launched in 1986. The US forces participating in the drill include the bulk of the Seventh Fleet, as well as the Submarine Group 7 – both of which are based in Japan’s Yokosuka. Tokyo has deployed roughly a fifth of its of its military. Two Canadian warships are also taking part in the exercise.
The record-breaking drill is set to demonstrate “the strength and durability of the US-Japan alliance” and the nations’ “shared pursuit of a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” Lieutenant General Jerry Martinez, who leads the US troops stationed in Japan, told reporters as the wargames kicked off earlier this week.
The navies are tasked with practicing amphibious assaults and ballistic missile defense, as well as aerial combat, all close to Chinese waters. The US nine-ship strike group, led by the nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS ‘Ronald Reagan,’ is also engaged in training for anti-submarine warfare.
Military officials noted that Keen Sword showcases the allied fleets’ ability to jointly counter crises emerging in the strategically important Pacific region. To improve interoperability, the allied fleets practiced sharing logistic data and delivered supplies to each other’s ships.
Commander of the Japanese contingent, Rear Admiral Hiroshi Egawa, noted that the US-Japanese alliance is “essential for stability in this region and the wider Indo Pacific.”
Japan, led by the right-wing Liberal Democratic Party, has been ramping up its armed forces in accordance to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s pledge to enshrine a more assertive role of the military in the nation’s largely pacifist post-WWII constitution. In March, Japan created its first elite marine assault unit, the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade. In September, Tokyo sent its newest and largest warship – helicopter carrier JS ‘Kaga’ – on a two-month tour in order to promote a “free and open Indo-Pacific” and to foster stronger military ties with Pacific states like the Philippines.
Beijing, meanwhile, had been warning the US and Japan against violating its sovereignty by letting their ships and warplanes come near its territorial waters. Chinese officials had accused the US of abusing the ‘freedom of navigation’ principle, and are saying that its naval maneuvers contribute to the rise of tensions in the already contentious region. In September, a Chinese warship almost suffered a collision with Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS ‘Decatour’ as it was trying to fend off the US vessel Beijing said came too close to its waters in the South China Sea.
In response to Washington’s activity in the region, China announced that it will also step up its naval capabilities. The nation must “concentrate preparations for fighting a war” and increase the amount and scope of military exercises, President Xi Jinping declared last week.

The Gunners have told the midfielder that he won’t be offered a new deal when his contract runs out at the end of the season and he will be allowed to leave.
The Bundesliga giants have been showing a keen interest in Ramsey’s contract talks with Arsenal, which have collapsed with the club looking to make some wage-bill savings.
And they would like to sit down and offer him a deal to move to Germany as soon as they are allowed under FIFA rules early in the New Year.
The news with be a blow for Manchester United, who have Ramsey near the top of their summer shopping list.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is also mulling over if he wants to get involved in what could become a bidding war for the former Cardiff City man.
But Chelsea are now having second thoughts about making a move for Ramsey after the early-season form of their England players Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Ramsey came off the bench in the 73rd minute during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool.
Liverpool took the lead thanks to James Milner, but a late strike from Alexandre Lacazette saw the two sides finish all square.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was happy with a draw at the Emirates.
“A point is a good result – Unai Emery can say the same,” Klopp said.
“But we had clear chances. When Arsenal chase the game they throw everyone on the pitch which is really cool and we were not as compact as I wanted.
“Our workhorses in midfield, we put too much on their shoulders. And it was one time we didn’t close Alex Iwobi and he plays the pass for the goal.”
Arsenal manager Unai Emery thought his side could have won, but was pleased with how his players performed.
“We wanted to win but the performance is good,” Emery said.
“We push and we work the match, doing our tactics and with our supporters pushing us with energy.
“For the supporters it is a great match and a good spectacle but I am only 50% happy because we wanted to win.”
When John Tavares decided to pass on signing an extension with the New York Islanders and test free agency, he became the most interesting man in hockey.
NHL stars don't ordinarily get to that point, and it led to Tavares going home to Toronto to sign a $ 77 million US, seven-year contract with the Maple Leafs. Fellow players were watching closely, too, and wondering what the long-term impact might be.
"Even if we weren't directly affiliated with it, it would've been interesting to follow because you don't see it that often," Islanders winger Anders Lee said. "Who knows if it's going to set a precedent or not or anything like that."
The early returns are mixed. Tyler Seguin hopes a long-term deal can get done with the Stars before the regular season begins next month, while Ottawa Senators forward Matt Duchene started wondering about what could be. Seguin said he hasn't gotten that far to imagine himself in Tavares' shoes.
"I didn't look into it really too much because my goal has still been to be a Dallas Star," Seguin said Friday. "That plan hasn't changed."
A lot of times there isn't a plan yet. While Seguin said there has been positive dialogue between his agent and the Stars in recent days, Duchene hasn't talked to the Senators about an extension and Ottawa captain Erik Karlsson is the constant subject of trade rumors with one year left on his deal.
Duchene feels better than at the start of previous seasons when he was less than happy in Colorado and didn't know where he'd be next. Only this time, his uncertainty doesn't feel so bad after watching Tavares get to free agency and have the chance to pick his destination.
"It gives you something to think about because you want to make the best decision for yourself," Duchene said. "Sometimes the way a team does things can trigger a different response from the individual and vice versa. It's not a cookie-cutter thing."
Tavares understands that. He had to weigh nine years with the Islanders against recent struggles to make the playoffs and the potential offered by teams like the Maple Leafs and Sharks.
His situation was so often compared to that Steven Stamkos — who re-signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning on the eve of free agency in 2016 — that Tavares doesn't expect Seguin, Duchene or anyone else to feel the same ways he did.
"Once I got through the regular season and kind of decompressing after a while and started kind of getting closer obviously to July 1, I realized that this might be my really only chance to go through something like this and have this opportunity to see what else is out there," Tavares said. "It obviously led to me making a change. I think it just depends on the type of person and the situation and I guess kind of the optics or the circumstances in that situation."
Karlsson could go the Tavares route next summer, though any team that deals for him between now and the trade deadline will likely want to lock him up long term. That could be the case for Duchene, too.
Seguin, who last week expressed concerns that a new contract with Dallas wasn't done yet, is far more likely to sign in the coming weeks in large part because of the talent the Stars have around him and the potential they have to contend. Captain and linemate Jamie Benn is signed through 2024-25 and doesn't feel like he has to sell Seguin on staying or give him any advice about going through the negotiation process.
"The contract will sort itself out," Benn said. "People think it's more complicated than it already is … but he's earned every amount of money that he's going to get and he's well-deserving of it."
Seguin, Karlsson and Duchene are going to get paid by some team over the next 10 months, as Tavares was. Oilers captain and Art Ross Trophy winner Connor McDavid went the more common route signing the longest-possible deal in Edmonton for the highest average salary in the league, and even he was watching the Tavares saga and came away glad it happened.
"Hockey's kind of always been the 'I do what I'm told' and 'I kind of go where I'm told' and whatnot, but he was one of the few guys that took his matters into his own hands and you really respect that," McDavid said.
"He could've signed the security deal and signed a long-term deal or a lot of money and never would've thought about it again. But he decided that he wanted to go a different route and live out his childhood dream and play in Toronto and you can't really blame him for that."

Yet it is implacable economic might that leads many today to conclude that the yuan, China’s currency, will supplant the dollar, just as sterling gave way to the dollar after 1945. The yuan is already one of five constituents of the Special Drawing Right, a basket of reserve currencies created by the IMF. And China is opening up to capital flows. This year foreigners have been the biggest buyers of Chinese government bonds.
It is tempting to see this as another milestone on the way to the yuan’s preordained supremacy. But it is an error to interpret current events in the light of an imagined future. Foreign buyers of Chinese bonds are not swept along by an unseen law of history. Rather they are spurred by more prosaic considerations.
Philip Pullman‘s His Dark Materials series is getting the adaptation treatment, again. The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper will helm a new adaptation of the YA fantasy series, and Logan breakout Dafne Keen will star. Also, rumor has it that Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda has joined the cast as well. More on the new His Dark Materials movie below.
Pullman’s His Dark Materials saga made the leap from page to screen in 2007 with The Golden Compass. The film was a disappointment, despite featuring a killer cast including Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, and Eva Green. At the time, studios were clamoring to adapt more YA books into film franchises to compete with the popular Harry Potter movies. Alas, The Golden Compass floundered at the box office, and the film series died before it could get started.
Now, Deadline reports His Dark Materials is getting another shot, thanks to The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper. Dafne Keen, who made quite an impression as Laura in Logan, has been cast to star in Hooper’s film as Lyra, the main character of the series. On top of that, Baz Bamigboye, a reporter for the Daily Mail, is claiming Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda has joined the cast as well.

While His Dark Materials consists primarily of three books – Northern Lights (1995, published as The Golden Compass in North America), The Subtle Knife (1997), and The Amber Spyglass (2000) – Deadline claims Hooper has negotiated to turn the new adaptation will consist of an eight-part series. Author Pullman wrote several additional short stories and books set in the Dark Materials world – Lyra’s Oxford, Once Upon a Time In the North, The Collectors, The Book of Dust – so perhaps Hooper’s adaptation will borrow from them as well. Or perhaps Hooper will simply break the three books up into eight specific segments.
BBC One ordered the film series, penned by Wonder screenwriter Jack Thorne, in 2015. Since then, Hooper has been working behind-the-scenes to land the directing gig, and now he has it. In Philip Pullman’s books, the main character Lyra lives in a parallel world in which human souls can take the form of lifelong animal companions. Here’s a synopsis for the three main books:
These thrilling adventures tell the story of Lyra and Will—two ordinary children on a perilous journey through shimmering haunted otherworlds. They will meet witches and armored bears, fallen angels and soul-eating specters. And in the end, the fate of both the living—and the dead—will rely on them. Phillip Pullman’s spellbinding His Dark Materials trilogy has captivated readers for over twenty years and won acclaim at every turn. It will have you questioning everything you know about your world and wondering what really lies just out of reach.
The books have religious undertones – the stories are inspired, in part, by Paradise Lost – and have met with a fair share of controversy. Religious groups have criticized the books for promoting atheism, and Pullman, for his part, hasn’t shied away from the controversy. According to the author, the books aren’t so much anti-God as they are anti-organized religion. Whether or not these potentially controversial themes will make it into Hooper’s film remains to be seen.
The eight-part series is rumored to air on BBC One in late 2019 or early 2020.

Nolan, whose films include Dunkirk, Interstellar and The Dark Knight, was asked on Desert Island Discs about rumours he would be directing the next 007 film, due for release in November 2019.
He replied: “I won’t be the man, no, no.
“I would love to make a Bond film at some point. I think those producers Barbara [Broccoli] and Michael [Wilson] do a tremendous job and so has [director] Sam Mendes.
“I have always been very inspired by the films.”
He told host Kirsty Young how he started working with a Super 8 camera in 1977 at the age of seven after seeing Star Wars.
He made short films starring his action figures.
At 12 he discovered the job title film director and knew that was what he wanted to be after being inspired by the Ridley Scott films Alien and Blade Runner.
With his family based in America, he was sent to Haileybury boarding school in Hertfordshire, where he had won an art scholarship.
He said of boarding school life: “It did suit me.
“It is very sink or swim, it’s a very Darwin environment and you either thrive or not.”
Later he read English Literature at University College London where he met his wife, Emma Thomas, on the first day.
She later co-produced films such as The Prestige (2006), Inception (2010), The Dark Knight trilogy (2005–2012), Interstellar (2014) and Dunkirk (2017) with him.

Old Trafford officials have been working to complete a deal with Arsenal for the £35m-rated Chile forward, with midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan going the other way in part exchange.
United manager Jose Mourinho has made it clear that he wanted Sanchez in his plans for the trip to Turf Moor, but United would have to have him registered by noon in order for him to be able to play.
Sanchez has already agreed a contract worth a staggering £505,000-a-week over four-and-a-half years.
United’s kit manufacturers Adidas were confident enough that they were already selling ‘Alexis 7’ shirts at their flagship store on London’s Oxford Street yesterday.
However, the finer details of Mkhitaryan’s move to Arsenal were still being ironed out, as his agent Mino Raiola arrived in London to discuss his client’s personal terms.
Raiola made clear earlier this week that the Armenia captain, who trained with United at Carrington yesterday, had to agree to a move before the Sanchez deal could be completed.
Mourinho had considered the possibility of asking United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to go ahead with a deal for Sanchez even if Mkhitaryan could not agree a move
But he is reluctant to antagonise Raiola, who also represents United players Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
For that reason, Raiola has been given every chance to secure Mkhitaryan’s move to Arsenal, as Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger seemed to be cranking up preparations for life after Sanchez when he made him train away from the rest of the Arsenal squad.
The Frenchman is convinced his move to Manchester United is reaching a critical stage, having said first thing yesterday morning: “It’s the deadline now: in the next 24 to 48 hours this will happen… or not.”
But having insisted he had no qualms about including him in the team for tomorrow’s game against Crystal Palace after leaving him out against Bournemouth on Sunday, Wenger made Sanchez train with the kids while what the Gunners’ boss described as a “lawyer’s battle” played out between Arsenal and United.
“I would say our fans know Alexis will not extend his contract and they have accepted that Idea,” said Wenger. “The fact it will not be one-way traffic makes the whole thing a bit smoother, maybe, a bit less disappointing. We lose a player yes but we could gain another player.”
Wenger all but ruled out the possibility of Mesut Ozil following Sanchez through the exit and played down the chances of signing Malcom from Bordeaux.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is a different story, however, and Wenger was adamant there was a place for him at Arsenal.
“Yes [he’d fit in], because character can be a very positive note and it can be a very negative note,” Wenger said.
“I believe overall you look at the achievements of a player during his career and usually, when a career has been very positive, the character has been used in a positive way.”
His comments did not play well with current club Dortmund, however, who will not be including him for their game against Hertha Berlin amid fears his head had been turned.
“We regard it as disrespectful that Arsene Wenger expresses himself about players of other clubs,” the club said.
Sporting director Michael Zorc added: “There is no contact on our part with Arsenal. Arsene Wenger certainly has enough currently to deal with the performance of his own players.”
