Or Colin Kaepernick and policing? What about President Donald Trump and the economy?

You get the first episode of Take On America With OZY, taped at the War Memorial in Charm City with the midterm elections right around the corner. Unlike most town halls, this wasn’t about politicians answering questions from a cherry-picked crowd. The spotlight wasn’t on the celebrity guests but the people: civic leaders, businessmen, activists, students, educators and everyone in between. Before a televised audience, they tackled stereotypes and assumptions head-on. And they had plenty to say.

“You’re dealing with a white supremacy agenda,” Duane “Shorty” Davis, a longtime Baltimore activist and Black Republican, said of Kavanaugh. Yet others backed the controversial justice. “What happened to due process?” asked Derrick Hollie, president of the conservative group Reaching America. “We’re in a room full of Black men. What if we were accused and didn’t have a chance to prove ourselves?” Horace Cooper, a fellow at the National Center for Public Research, defended the presumption of innocence: “Fifty or 60 years ago, any one of the men here, all it would have taken was the accusation. You might not have even gotten to trial.”

We blame our fathers for the system murdering us. We’ve got to start blaming the system for the oppression it puts on us.

J.C. Faulk, diversity and inclusion consultant

Should Kaepernick be considered a hero? Columnist for The Atlantic and former ESPN anchor Jemele Hill — part of a star-studded panel including activist DeRay Mckesson, Maryland governor candidate Ben Jealous, actor Lawrence Gilliard Jr. and Senate candidate Tony Campbell, among others — said yes, the former 49ers quarterback is heroic. “The NFL, which has no problem welcoming in people who have been accused or convicted of domestic violence or sexual assault, have decided to blackball somebody from the league who stood up for justice,” Hill said.

“I will not uplift Kaepernick on a higher level than any other Black person who has been talking about this same issue for decades,” said 26-year-old poet Duke Porter, who nonetheless thanked Kaepernick for his protests. One audience member suggested hero worship is dangerous. Another believed Kaepernick’s Nike deal was a cynical profit play. “I’m going to call him a hero because they call White guys heroes for lesser things,” snapped back J.C. Faulk, a diversity and inclusion consultant. “I don’t care if somebody gets on their knee or stands on their head, the system that oppresses us has no right to tell us how to fight for our freedom.”

McKesson, a leader in the Black Lives Matter movement, noted how laws protect officers from prosecution, from California to Ohio. In Maryland, one statute says you can file an anonymous complaint for an officer for everything except brutality. The Baltimore police department’s chief spokesman, T.J. Smith, a Black man whose brother was shot and killed last year, said police agree they should be held to a higher standard. “Police leaders are more aware of that today than they were before,” Smith said.

“When a 10-year-old is shot and killed in the city, very little changes,” said James Evans, a local ad executive. “When an officer is shot in the city, neighborhoods are closed down; there are 10-mile-long processions. That’s the implicit bias.”

A week ago, Trump asked Black voters to “honor him” with their vote, considering his administration has presided over record-low unemployment numbers for African-Americans. “When he said, ‘Are you better off today than you were before?’ I think you have to say yes,” argued Senate candidate Campbell, a Republican. “When he said, ‘What do you have to lose?’ I think that’s an important point too.” That caused Jealous, a Democrat, to respond incredulously: “What you have to lose is your vote, what you have to lose is your health care, what you have to lose is funding for public education,” he said, before turning his back to Campbell.

When fatherhood came up, emotions rose. Gilliard Jr., known for roles in The Wire and The Walking Dead, spoke about growing up with a Vietnam veteran father who was addicted to drugs. “I try my best to not be my dad,” he said. Hill also spoke of her father’s heroin addiction and how, although he reformed his life, “once you create that distance, it’s there.” The diversity consultant, Faulk, is a single parent whose dad died at 31 from liver problems caused by alcohol abuse. He said he learned to channel his anger to another culprit. “We blame our fathers for the system murdering us. We’ve got to start blaming the system for the oppression it puts on us,” he said.

The day after the Baltimore event, Smith resigned as chief spokesman for the Baltimore police, a department in shambles with three chiefs this year alone — and a fourth coming after the interim chief announced he wouldn’t seek the full-time post. Although Smith said he made the decision beforehand, he appreciated how Take On America brought together the community. “It’s a good, noteworthy conversation to have,” he said.

  • Matt Damon reprised his role as Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh on the latest episode of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”
  • The actor, who was hosting the episode, appeared as Kavanaugh for an “It’s A Wonderful Life” spoof imagining what the world would be like if Donald Trump, played by Alec Baldwin, wasn’t president.
  • When Trump asked Kavanaugh how the Supreme Court was, Kavanaugh responded, “Me on the Supreme Court? With my temperament? Are you insane? Nah, nah. They went with that nerd, Merrick Garland. But on the plus side, when I tell people I like beer, they find it charming and not like I’m threatening violence.”
  • He also presented Trump with a calendar where each day was a different beer.
  • Other stars made cameos during the cold open sketch, including Ben Stiller as former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and Robert De Niro as special counsel Robert Mueller.

NBC reveals it sat on discrediting info about Kavanaugh ‘witness’ https://briefnews.eu/nbc-reveals-it-sat-on-discrediting-info-about-kavanaugh-witness/ https://briefnews.eu/nbc-reveals-it-sat-on-discrediting-info-about-kavanaugh-witness/#respond Sat, 27 Oct 2018 01:03:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nbc-reveals-it-sat-on-discrediting-info-about-kavanaugh-witness/ As the US Justice Department prepares to investigate media-hound attorney Michael Avenatti and Kavanaugh “victim” Julie Swetnick for making false accusations, NBC admitted they knew Swetnick’s story was falling apart weeks ago.

More than three weeks after an NBC interview where Kavanaugh accuser #3 Julie Swetnick contradicted the sworn affidavit she gave Avenatti, the network is publishing text and phone exchanges with a supporting “witness.” Recorded around the time of Swetnick’s interview, the second woman appears to tell two different stories when Avenatti is around and when he isn’t.

The supposed witness signed an affidavit, made public by Avenatti on October 3, describing in no uncertain terms how she saw a young Brett Kavanaugh (now a US Supreme Court Justice) spike the drinks of girls at student parties so that they could then be gang-raped. When questioned by NBC, however, she said she hadn’t actually witnessed it, and Avenatti had grossly misrepresented her words in the document she had only “skimmed” before signing.

NBC then spoke to Avenatti, who had provided the second woman’s contact information in the first place, to try to straighten out the stories, but the plot only thickened. The hot-tempered lawyer expressed his “disgust” with the outlet and at one point said “on background, it’s not the same woman. What are you going to do with that?“

They then reached out to the “witness” again, and she backed Avenatti and the affidavit – only to insist in a phone call minutes later that she never saw Kavanaugh do anything and she wouldn’t speak to Avenatti anymore.

Swetnick’s own early-October interview to NBC revealed a story that markedly diverged from her written narrative. Questioned on camera, she could no longer be certain that Kavanaugh was among the boys who supposedly gang-raped her, or that he had spiked the punch at the party. It later emerged during the FBI investigation of her claims that Swetnick had a history of making false accusations of sexual misconduct.

Earlier this week, Judiciary Committee chair Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) referred Avenatti and Swetnick to the Justice Department to be investigated for conspiracy to defraud, making false statements to federal officials, and obstructing a federal investigation.

South Park Targets Brett Kavanaugh With Help From Mr. Hankey — Watch https://briefnews.eu/south-park-targets-brett-kavanaugh-with-help-from-mr-hankey-watch/ https://briefnews.eu/south-park-targets-brett-kavanaugh-with-help-from-mr-hankey-watch/#respond Mon, 08 Oct 2018 20:14:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/south-park-targets-brett-kavanaugh-with-help-from-mr-hankey-watch/

South Park is depicting Judge Brett Kavanaugh as he really is: an actual turd. Wednesday’s episode (Comedy Central, 10/9c) draws inspiration from Kavanaugh’s contentious Supreme Court confirmation hearings, substituting Mr. Hankey — the show’s beloved Christmas character, not seen since 2012 — for Kavanaugh.

Here’s the episode’s official synopsis: “Mr. Hankey must defend his character or lose everything that is important to him in an all-new episode. … Mr. Hankey’s offensive behavior puts him in jeopardy of being fired as the Director of the Annual Christmas Pageant. Meanwhile, at South Park Elementary, Strong Woman and PC Principal face a whole new set of challenges in their relationship.”

In addition to those expectedly ludicrous details, Comedy Central also released a clip from the episode, during which Mr. Hankey if he recalls accusing everyone in South Park of being a douchebag 14 years ago. “Yes, that was a bad attempt at a Christmas joke,” he admits — though “Mr. Waithouse” is quick to point out that his explanation makes absolutely no sense.

The episode’s title, “The Problem With a Poo,” is also worth noting. It’s clearly a take on The Problem With Apu, a 2017 documentary exploring how characters like The Simpsons‘ Apu Nahasapeemapetilon have reinforced negative cultural stereotypes, given how little representation South Asian and Indian people have had on American television over the years.

Lindsey Graham gets his ‘thug life’ memes in afterglow of Kavanaugh saga https://briefnews.eu/lindsey-graham-gets-his-thug-life-memes-in-afterglow-of-kavanaugh-saga/ https://briefnews.eu/lindsey-graham-gets-his-thug-life-memes-in-afterglow-of-kavanaugh-saga/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 23:08:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lindsey-graham-gets-his-thug-life-memes-in-afterglow-of-kavanaugh-saga/

Sen. Lindsey Graham didn’t mince his words defending Brett Kavanaugh as his Supreme Court nomination was debated, slamming his political opponents and smugly dismissing protesters. So ‘thug life’ memes were called for.

The videos of him interacting with protesters, or rather shrugging off protesters, have gone viral as supporters professed their love to the controversial senator from South Carolina. Some of them revived the ‘thug life’ meme of circa 2015 that glorified a cool self-image and was usually combined with depictions of White suburban stereotypes. Might be appropriate, as Republicans are gloating over the successful end to the roller coaster nomination process.

KAVANAUGH IS CONFIRMED: Embattled Supreme Court nominee secures 50 votes in the Senate https://briefnews.eu/kavanaugh-is-confirmed-embattled-supreme-court-nominee-secures-50-votes-in-the-senate/ https://briefnews.eu/kavanaugh-is-confirmed-embattled-supreme-court-nominee-secures-50-votes-in-the-senate/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 13:58:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kavanaugh-is-confirmed-embattled-supreme-court-nominee-secures-50-votes-in-the-senate/ Judge Brett KavanaughGetty Images

  • Judge Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court the votes of 50 senators, bringing to a close weeks of bitter partisan fights and protests over the nominee, who faced multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and doubts about his truthfulness under oath.
  • A conservative who served in President George W. Bush’s White House, Kavanaugh will replace the court’s swing vote, Justice Anthony Kennedy, and will likely move the court to the right for decades to come.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court in a narrow 50-48 vote in the Senate on Saturday afternoon, bringing to a close the most divisive high court confirmation battle since the 1990s.

Protesters — many of them women and sexual assault survivors — flooded Capitol Hill on Saturday, continuing weeks of mass protests against a nominee whose alleged history of sexual misconduct transformed a partisan debate over ideology into a cultural battle fueled by the #MeToo movement. Republicans condemned the demonstrators, some of whom interrupted the final vote with shouts as they were dragged out of the chamber, characterizing them as a special interest-funded “mob.”

How ‘the Forrest Gump of Republican politics’ Brett Kavanaugh became the Supreme Court’s most embattled justice in decades, after controversy over sexual misconduct allegations https://briefnews.eu/how-the-forrest-gump-of-republican-politics-brett-kavanaugh-became-the-supreme-courts-most-embattled-justice-in-decades-after-controversy-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations/ https://briefnews.eu/how-the-forrest-gump-of-republican-politics-brett-kavanaugh-became-the-supreme-courts-most-embattled-justice-in-decades-after-controversy-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 11:35:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-the-forrest-gump-of-republican-politics-brett-kavanaugh-became-the-supreme-courts-most-embattled-justice-in-decades-after-controversy-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations/ brett kavanaughChip Somodevilla/Getty Images

  • The Senate voted 50-48 on Saturday to confirm President Donald Trump’s nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, to the Supreme Court.
  • Kavanaugh’s nomination appeared to be in jeopardy for weeks, after multiple women came forward to publicly accuse him of sexual misconduct in high school and college. Kavanaugh has denied the allegations in statements and testimony.
  • But several key senators on Friday announced they intended to vote for him on Saturday regardless, paving the way for his confirmation.

After several tumultuous weeks of uncertainty, Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed to the Supreme Court on Saturday.

The Senate voted 50-48 on Saturday to confirm Kavanaugh, after several days of speculation over how key senators viewed as “swing votes” would decide. Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia were pivotal in confirming Kavanaugh, voting “yes,” while Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski opposed his confirmation.

But the multiple sexual misconduct allegations lodged against Kavanaugh in recent weeks still hangs over Saturday’s news, prompting furious backlash from the protesters who for weeks lobbied Collins, Manchin, and other senators to vote against Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Christine Blasey Ford, 51, accused a teenaged Kavanaugh of forcing himself on her at a high school party in the early 1980s. Deborah Ramirez, a former Yale University classmate of Kavanaugh’s, said Kavanaugh exposed himself to her without her consent at a dorm-room party during his freshman 1983-84 school year.

Kavanaugh categorically denied Ford and Ramirez’s accounts in separate statements before delivering a fiery testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee. An additional FBI background check into the allegations concluded less than a week later with no corroboration for the accounts.

Kavanaugh was born and bred in the Washington, DC area and has a long history in conservative circles. Top Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin once called Kavanaugh the “Forrest Gump of Republican politics,” because he was present for so many key moments in modern political history.

As the final vote for Kavanaugh’s confirmation approaches, here’s a look at how the born-and-bred conservative rose to become the court’s most pivotal nomination in decades:

  • Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court on Saturday by 50-48 votes in the Senate. He was sworn in that evening in a private ceremony.
  • Before, during, and after the vote, protesters and activists flooded the areas outside the Supreme Court and the US Capitol to oppose his confirmation.
  • Kavanaugh’s confirmation process has been marred by controversy following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh was narrowly confirmed to the Supreme Court on Saturday, after the Senate voted 50-48.

Protesters and activists came out in droves before, during, and after the vote to voice their opposition to Kavanaugh’s confirmation, which comes following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and heated testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Kavanaugh was sworn in Saturday evening in a private ceremony, as the crowds of protesters flooded the steps leading up to the Supreme Court, even knocking on the front doors.

After Kavanaugh’s first accuser, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, came forward with her accusations, polls showed that Americans’ opinions of Kavanaugh plummeted, and according to numerous polls, Kavanaugh has lost the most support from women and Democrats.

Scroll down for photos of the tumultuous protests taking place ahead of his confirmation:

The protests began early Saturday, hours before the final vote is set to take place.

Kavanaugh’s expected confirmation comes after sexual-assault survivors across the nation came out swinging against the judge’s nomination in light of the allegations against him.

Palin, Rice mull challenging Alaska & Maine senators whose Kavanaugh votes sparked outrage https://briefnews.eu/palin-rice-mull-challenging-alaska-maine-senators-whose-kavanaugh-votes-sparked-outrage/ https://briefnews.eu/palin-rice-mull-challenging-alaska-maine-senators-whose-kavanaugh-votes-sparked-outrage/#respond Sat, 06 Oct 2018 18:59:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/palin-rice-mull-challenging-alaska-maine-senators-whose-kavanaugh-votes-sparked-outrage/

America may see an interesting female showdown as a spin-off of the Brett Kavanaugh saga. Susan Rice and Sarah Palin hinted they may run against Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, who voted in a way they deem unacceptable.

The soap opera begins with Susan Collins (R-ME), who was initially sitting on the fence when it came to whether she would vote in favor of the Supreme Court nomination of Kavanaugh. This invited some of Kavanaugh’s fiercest critics to put pressure on her to vote against his confirmation – pressure which Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) called “vicious, vile, and dangerous actions.”

Collins finally put an end to the speculation on Friday, announcing in a 44-minute speech that she would be backing Kavanaugh.

But Susan Collins’ decision angered another Susan by the name of Susan Rice (who served as national security adviser under Barack Obama).

READ MORE: Senators Flake, Manchin, Collins have their offices surrounded by protesters after Kavanaugh vote

Rice’s discontent was revealed following a tweet by Jen Psaki, who served as Obama’s communications director. “Who wants to run for Senate in Maine?” she tweeted. It took Rice 11 minutes to respond with “me.”

She later clarified that she was not making any announcements, but stressed that she is “deeply disappointed in Senator Collins’ vote for Kavanaugh.”

However, Rice isn’t without her own controversies. For starters, she was serving as national security adviser when the Benghazi attack happened in 2012, which resulted in the killing of four Americans. Republican lawmakers have accused her of underplaying the attack as a random act of violence in response to an anti-Muslim film. However, Obama admitted it was premeditated. She has also been accused of revealing the names of associates of Donald Trump that appeared in intelligence reports last year.

And as with just about anything these days, the internet weighed in on the possibility of Rice running against Collins, with many immediately pledging their support.

Others, however, were quick to bring up her past controversies.

It goes both ways

But just as Rice is unhappy with Collins for promising to vote in favor of Kavanaugh, former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin is mad at Sen. Lisa Murkowski – a Republican from Palin’s home state of Alaska – for crossing party lines and announcing that she will be voting ‘no’ when it comes to Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Palin tweeted directly at Murkowski, saying: “Hey @LisaMurkowski – I can see 2022 from my house…”

READ MORE: Most ridiculous apologies forced from those who didn’t toe media line on Kavanaugh (VIDEO)

That tweet wasn’t without a dose of humor, as it stems from Tina Fey’s remarkable impression of Palin on Saturday Night Live in which Fey delivered the line “I can see Russia from my house” when talking about foreign policy on the show. While Palin never actually muttered those words, she’s often credited with doing so.

Palin’s tweet came one day after she had urged Murkowski to “do the right thing” when it comes to Kavanaugh.

The former Alaska governor, who ran as vice president on the McCain ticket in 2008, was often mocked for her statements during her run, and long after. Some of her most famous gems include stating that America needs to stand with its North Korean allies and declaring that gun-free zones amount to “stupid on steroids.”

She also said that the world looks at Russian President Vladimir Putin as someone who “wrestles bears,” while Obama was looked at as someone who “wears mom jeans.”

And, of course, the Twittersphere had a few things to say about Palin’s tweet, with responses ranging from eager support to laughs and criticism.
