Enlarge / Kate Beaton (credit: Corey Katz / Kate Beaton)
For those who paid attention to the webcomics scene of the 2010s or simply enjoy good humor writing, the name Kate Beaton is likely a familiar one. The Canadian cartoonist’s Hark a Vagrant—a dizzying mix of the literary and historical references, lack of respect for institutions that didn’t deserve any, and gleeful silliness that ran through 2018—was a staple of Best Of lists for years, whether online or in its two print collections.
Outside of that work, Beaton has created kids’ books (The Princess and the Pony and King Baby, which both won awards) and earlier this year an animated series based on one of those books: Pinecone & Pony on Apple TV+.
This week her latest project hits shelves, and it’s arguably her greatest achievement to date. Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands is a memoir of her experiences working in the Athabasca oil sands in northern Alberta. It’s a serious, moving, and heartfelt piece of cartooning that is as kind as it is fearless and easily one of the most impressive graphic novels of this year, or works of any kind in the past decade.

Tuesday morning’s Good Morning Britain saw hosts Adil Ray and Kate Garraway take the reins in regular host Susanna Reid’s absence and following Piers Morgan’s permanent exit last month. The ITV presenting pair had plenty to get through, including interviews with Alex Salmond, Jonathan Ashworth and Nadhim Zahawi. However, many GMB viewers decided enough was enough after witnessing a number of interruptions throughout the interviews and made their opinions on the show clear.
While there were a number of talking points from Tuesday’s GMB, none more grabbed the attention than the interview with Mr Salmond.
The Scottish politician, who’s heading the new Alba Party to oppose Nicola Sturgeon’s Scottish National Party, became embroiled in several heated clashes with Garraway as he tried to discuss his party’s plans and quest for Scottish independence.
In one instance, Mr Salmond even had to ask the GMB presenter to stop interrupting as they “weren’t going to get anywhere”.
“It’s going to be very difficult to conduct the interview, can you let me answer the question?” Mr Salmond said as he tried to keep the chat on course.

But it wasn’t just during the chat with Mr Salmond that Garraway and Ray both came under fire for.
Both GMB hosts grilled Mr Ashworth on his and Labour’s stance on the possibility of Covid passports being rolled out in the future.
However, with Mr Ashworth insisting he found it “discriminatory”, Garraway and Ray both found themselves butting in to question why he was so firmly against the idea.
And it didn’t take long for both GMB hosts to begin trending on social media as thousands of fans voiced their disdain for the show’s outlook following Morgan’s exit in March.
“Watching @GMB and Kate Garraway is annoying talking over guests. They can’t even finish their points smh,” added a fourth.
While a fifth in response to the Mr Salmond interview penned: “Wasn’t much of an interview sadly thanks to Kate Garraway shouting over him.
“The amount of salary she takes you would at least expect her to be able to undertake the basics of her role.”
And a sixth didn’t mince their words: “Kate Garraway with a disgusting interview, not interested in what Alex has to say just throwing mud at him in the hope it will stick and constantly talking over him.”
A final viewer surmised: “@gmb the interview with @AlexSalmond with @kategarraway constantly interrupting him was one of the worst I’ve seen.
“It’s every show now it happens with a guest or cutting over a fellow presenter @benshephard. Somebody speak to Kate, it’s getting ridiculous now and it’s so rude.”
Garraway and Ray were filling in this week as Reid takes a break from presenting duties.
Ray will keep his place as the main host for the rest of April although ITV is still yet to announce a permanent replacement for Morgan.
Good Morning Britain continues weekdays at 6am on ITV.
“It is disappointing though for anyone under 50 that is now going to have to wait longer for their vaccinations than they might have otherwise done,” Hawkins said.
“Can you just clear up what is behind this issue with supply because the Prime Minister pointed to the fact there was a delay for various technical reasons.
“But we know that India’s Foreign Minister has told the parliament there that vaccine export conditions are based on the assessment of adequate availability at home. So is it to do with the Indian Government not wanting to release these supplies to us at the moment?”
“No, the Indian Government hasn’t blocked the export of this vaccines, there have been challenges at the Serum Institute and they’ve done a fantastic job, the volumes of vaccines they’ve produced is amazing. We will get this vaccine, it won’t interrupt the overall flow,” Dowden replied.

Royal expert and Telegraph associate editor Camilla Tominey appeared on This Morning to explain the origins of the Kate and Meghan rift. A story last year claimed Meghan Markle left Kate, the Duchess of Sussex in tears after the pair clashed over bridesmaids dresses for the 2018 royal wedding. Ms Tominey said that two insiders had approached her with the details and fought against Meghan’s allegation that it was, in fact, Kate’s fault.

Health Minister Nadine Dorries joined Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard on Good Morning Britain today to discuss the health department’s recommendation that NHS staff in England should receive a one percent pay rise next year. NHS staff have been excluded from a pay freeze for most public sector workers but Garraway clashed with Dorries over the “pitiful” suggestion.
Garraway said: “There are problems with saving lives as well as the economy, that’s the problem.
“But you know of course we know in our heads that needs to be but I think the problem is we’ve had so many words from Government about the wonder of the NHS, about the brilliance of nurses.
“They’ve been part of the most successful bit of the Government programme, delivering the vaccine, they’ve been the people doing the delivering.
“We’ve all clapped for carers, we’ve all said praise and then the reality looks like a one percent reward for a 100 percent effort and it’s going to sit uncomfortable.”

“You said you hoped they understood but the unions don’t, do they?” Garraway asked.
“The unions don’t understand they think it’s pitiful and I wonder if any of your former colleagues that you worked with have been in touch, have you talked to them?
“Have you got any nursing friends? Are you still in touch with that side of it to know what that reality must feel like for them?”
“I’ve literally just been speaking to one of them on the phone and via WhatsApp just a few moments ago,” Dorries replied.
“It was important for us that the NHS did receive a pay rise and I really hope that nurses understand that protecting people’s jobs, people’s livelihoods, continuing with the furlough scheme, continuing to keep people in work has to be our priority coming out of a pandemic.”
Garraway continued: “What we can predict is there’s trouble ahead not just with the economy but with the health service and particularly in your area in terms of mental health and provision in the community.
“Where you surprised and disappointed not to see any sort of social care put into place by this budget because that is going to be really important for all the areas, isn’t it?”
“The reason why I’m here today is actually to talk about the £79million that we’ve announced this morning to go into children’s mental health as part of the £500million we mentioned in the spending review on top of the £2.3billion we’re investing in mental health year-on-year.
“The announcement we made this morning is to specifically help children and young people who have been affected by the pandemic.”
Garraway interjected: “It’s much bigger than that though you know that and it’s great, well done.
“But it’s much bigger than that it’s not just related to that although it’s a very worthy cause it’s across the bond mental health problems for many areas of society and social care failings is something this Government committed to sorting out at the very beginning.”
“Those discussions are taking place and that is a priority also,” the Health Minister replied.

Kate, 53, was left heartbroken last March when her husband Derek, 53, was admitted to hospital after contracting coronavirus. Since then, the father-of-two has remained in a coma and although he’s made small steps with his recovery, the doctors are still unsure as to the full extent of the damage the illness has had on his body. The journalist has provided fans and Good Morning Britain viewers with updates on her spouse’s condition frequently on the show but in a new ITV documentary, she will speak candidly about the devastating toll the last year has had on her and the couple’s children.
The one-off special, entitled Kate Garraway: Finding Derek, will see the presenter discussing the events of 2020 and beyond.
A description for the show reads that the presenter will give: “An unflinching account of the profound effects on her family and on others.”
A journalist in her professional career, the mother-of-two will also talk about the longer-term effects of COVID-19 and what this means for people who have recovered after admission to hospital.
“As Kate lays bare in the film, her family, along with many others who have suffered the effects of the virus, is now facing the reality of adjusting to a very different way of life to the one they lived before the pandemic hit,” the description continued.
Kevin Lygo, managing director of media and entertainment at ITV has also offered viewers an insight into what to expect from the documentary.

Teasing the network’s Spring coverage, Kevin said: “Also announced as part of the schedule is a special one-off film titled Kate Garraway: Finding Derek.
“[It] will offer viewers an intimate insight into coping with the impact of COVID-19 as her husband Derek Draper remains seriously ill a year on from contracting the virus,” he continued.
Taking to Twitter, some fans have already reacted to the news, with one writing: “Brave and dignified throughout, we love Kate Garraway.”
As recently as Thursday morning, the mother-of-two opened up about not being able to see her husband during the current UK lockdown.
“We’re not used to not having relatives at the bedside, and I think that added dimension to it, for you, and all the relatives that it is just, just horrible,” he continued.
“So my heart really goes out to you,” Dr Down told the presenter.
The last time Kate was able to see her husband in ICU was during the Christmas period when the couple’s children were reunited with their father for the first time since he was admitted to hospital in March.
As well as featuring in a new ITV documentary, the mother-of-two will also be publishing a book about her family’s ordeal later in the Spring.
Entitled, The Power of Hope, Kate is hoping by talking about her own experience, she will be able to help others in a similar position.
The journalist said back in January: “I’ve been taking time to gather myself and focus like everyone else on getting through this latest lockdown.
“The pandemic is far from over and so is Derek’s journey but I have decided to share our story and what’s helping to keep me going, as we all try to work out what our new futures will look like.
“I am really hoping that it will help you with all that you are going through,” she wrote on her official Instagram page.

Kate McKinnon will no longer be stepping into the role of disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, our sister site Deadline reports.
The Saturday Night Live staple was set to play Holmes in The Dropout, a Hulu limited series based on the ABC News podcast of the same name. The project, which snagged a series order in April 2019, will reportedly continue with a new actress in the role. McKinnon was also attached as an executive producer.
Once billed as the next Steve Jobs, Holmes founded a privately held health technology company called Theranos in 2003 when she was just 19 years old. By 2013, the company — which claimed to have developed more accurate blood tests that required less blood than traditional exams — was worth about $ 10 billion, but a series of reports and scandals eventually exposed Theranos as a scam.
ABC News describes its podcast as follows: “The story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos is an unbelievable tale of ambition and fame gone terribly wrong. How did the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire lose it all in the blink of an eye? How did the woman once heralded as ‘the next Steve Jobs’ find herself facing criminal charges — to which she pleaded not guilty — and up to 20 years in jail? How did her technology, meant to revolutionize healthcare, potentially put millions of patients at risk? And how did so many smart people get it so wrong along the way?”
Are you disappointed that McKinnon won’t be playing Holmes? (Don’t worry, she’s still playing Carole Baskin!) Whatever’s on your mind, drop it in a comment below.

Following the news that travellers into the UK will now be required to show a negative COVID-19 test result as the Government tries to halt the spread of coronavirus, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps joined Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway to discuss all about the new strategy. Those entering the country will also be required to self-isolate for 10 days upon their arrival, but the new measures left the GMB pair baffled as to why they were being introduced now as opposed to when the outbreak first started. And just a few moments into the ITV debate, things took a tense turn.
Just moments after Mr Shapps joined Ben and Kate via video link, the GMB pair had one topic of discussion on their minds.
“One of the things that you’re announcing today is that people travelling into the UK finally need to have a negative COVID test.
‘Why has it taken 10 months to put this into place?” Ben hastily put to the Transport Secretary, referring to the fact that testing at borders has now been implemented.
Defending the Government’s stance, Shapps explained: “We’re specifically bringing it in now because there are things like the variants and the mutations of the virus, not the Kent one as there’s no reason to think the vaccine won’t work with that-“

However, Ben was keen to make clear his view that testing should have been in place from the beginning of the pandemic, interrupting: “Could we not have put it in for the original virus regardless of variants?”
Shapps again hit back: “It’s not the case that nothing’s been happening, what we’ve had is the complete quarantine so, just to explain-“
But this time it was Kate’s turn to interject and cut off Mr Shapps: “I don’t think Ben said there’s been nothing happening.”
She added: “He was just wondering why. Because you said when you announced it you wanted to take decisive action.
But the debate was far from over as Kate hit back once more: “I know but look, look.
“Sorry, Mr Shapps, quarantine as we know is very hard to enforce. You’re having to rely an awful lot on trust and that;’s been lots of problems with self-isolation and the spread of it anyway.
“If someone gets off a plane testing negative at that moment, you know they haven’t got COVID – and that’s a very good start.”
Mr Shapps was quick to correct Kate, however, explaining: “Unfortunately, that’s not true.
“That’s one of the things which is difficult to get across. It sounds logical what you said – actually that’s not what it (the test) shows you,
A “clash of the impostors” is on tap when Season 2 of the rejiggered Batwoman arrives on The CW.
As well reported over the past eight months, Ruby Rose and the Arrowverse series parted ways at the close of Season 1, so Javicia Leslie (God Friended Me) will now headline things as Ryan Wilder, a young woman who will come to claim the Batmantle.
The CW has now released a full synopsis for the Season 2 premiere, airing Sunday, Jan. 17 and titled “What Happened to Kate Kane?” It reads:
As friends and family hold on to hope that Kate may still be found, a homeless 25-year-old named Ryan Wilder stumbles upon Kate’s Batsuit. Focused on no longer being a victim, Ryan takes the suit to use as armor and goes rogue in the streets of Gotham, taking out various members of a new gang called the False Face Society.
Meanwhile, both Jacob Kane and Luke Fox launch searches for Kate, Mary Hamilton grapples with losing yet another family member, Sophie Moore struggles with things left unsaid to her first love, and Alice is furious that someone got to Kate before she could exact her revenge.
As Alice should be! Oh, sorry. Wait, there’s more:
At the same time, “Bruce Wayne” (played by guest star Warren Christie) returns under the pretense of searching for Kate, but the truth is he wants his suit back and it becomes the clash of imposters as “Batwoman” and “Bruce” square off in the action-packed season premiere.
Are you still curious to witness this change-up in Batwomen? And can anyone in a million years guess what song “Bruce Wayne” sings to himself during his skirmish with Ryan?

Kate McKinnon succeeded Brad Pitt as Saturday Night Live‘s Dr. Anthony Fauci this weekend, appearing opposite Heidi Gardner’s Dr. Deborah Birx to provide the latest information on COVID vaccine distribution.
“Here’s how we’re going to do it: First, healthcare workers [will get the vaccine],” Fauci explained. “Your McSteamys, your McDreamys, what have you.” Next will be “super-seniors,” which Birx described as “anybody named Mildred, Horace, Blanche, Mable or Walter.” After that, “we’ll move on to prisoners, then teachers, then sick people,” all of whom will be vaccinated by “July 20-bada-bada,” Fauci confirmed.
Throughout their interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Fauci was interrupted by multiple women who hurled their bras in his direction. “Throughout this whole thing, I’ve been the only one saying facts, so some people gotta crush on me,” he explained. “They say stuff like, ‘Can you be my face mask?’ I respect it. Any other year, I’m a 2. This year, I’m a 10.”
Despite his newfound fame, Fauci remained hopeful that enough Americans would eventually receive the coronavirus vaccine and forget all about him. “That’s my goal: to have zero name recognition with Americans, because that means I’ll have done my job well,” he said. “I want to go back to being an anonymous hunk. But you have my promise that no matter who is in charge, I’ll do everything possible to ensure that you are able to safely see your loved ones, once again.”
