The Ottawa Senators have given interested teams permission to negotiate a contract extension with superstar defenceman Erik Karlsson, according to Larry Brooks of the New York Post.

Karlsson, who is a free agent at the end of the 2018-19 season, has been the target of trade speculation dating back to last year and this moves the team one step closer to dealing the former Norris Trophy winner.

Reports Sunday stated the Senators had offered Karlsson an extension, something that was promised months ago. No details were released on what that offer was, but many believe Karlsson is seeking something close to what the Los Angeles Kings just gave Drew Doughty (eight years, $ 88 million US).

"We don't really want to talk about roster players, contract negotiations, trades, all these things, but I think we owe it to our fans and we made a promise at the town hall that we would make a contract offer to Erik Karlsson and we've done so," Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said Sunday. "We're not going to talk any more about it, but we talked about it previously and that's about all we're going to say on the subject."

The relationship between Karlsson and the Senators has been waning for months, coming to a head in June when reports came out about former teammate Mike Hoffman's fiancee harassing Karlsson's wife Melinda. Hoffman was traded shortly after.

Karlsson, who this past season produced 62 points in 71 games, is set to count $ 6.5 million against the cap in the final year of his deal.

The 28-year-old has won the Norris trophy as the league's best defenceman twice (2011-12, 2014-15).

William Karlsson scored 8:17 into overtime and the Vegas Golden Knights bounced back from a blown lead late in the third period to beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3 on Monday night to take a 2-1 series lead.

After Tomas Hertl tied the game with 1:57 left in regulation, the expansion Golden Knights rebounded and won in overtime despite failing to convert on two early power-play chances.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 39 saves, including a brilliant one to rob Logan Couture early in the overtime. Couture had another chance in the sequence before the winning goal.

But the Knights broke out with the loose puck and Karlsson beat Martin Jones with a wrist shot high to the stick side and was mobbed by his teammates.

Jones made 29 saves.

The Sharks rallied to tie the game and force a second straight overtime with two goals in the third period. Evander Kane scored just seconds after the end of a power play midway through the third to set the stage for Hertl.

Hertl drove to the net with a strong power move. With the Sharks swarming in front of Fleury, Hertl whacked at a loose puck and knocked it in for the equalizer with 1:57 to go, sending the towel-waving crowd into a frenzy.

Colin Miller, Jonathan Marchessault and Reilly Smith scored in a span of less than five minutes in the second period to put the Golden Knights in control but they couldn’t hold onto the lead.

Timo Meier opened the scoring with a power-play goal for the Sharks, but undisciplined play in the second period helped erase that lead and put San Jose in a hole.

Tables turn

Brenden Dillon held David Perron to give Vegas a power play less than a minute after Meier’s one-timer off a perfect cross-ice pass from Chris Tierney gave the Sharks the lead.

San Jose had an 11-1 edge in shots on goal in the period at that point as the Sharks were controlling the play. But that quickly turned as James Neal held the puck below the goal line and fed Miller with a pass that Marc-Edouard Vlasic nearly broke up for a tap-in that tied the game.

About three minutes later, Hertl was called for roughing Neal well behind the play, giving the Golden Knights another chance with the man advantage.

They converted again when Marchessault one-timed a cross-ice pass from Alex Tuch past Jones to give Vegas the lead.

Smith then capped the three goals in 4:46 when Marchessault fed Karlsson, who was left alone at the side of the net. He deftly sent a blind, backhand pass through the crease to Smith, who tapped it in for the 3-1 lead that silenced the crowd until the third-period theatrics.

The Sharks came out energized by a raucous crowd and the presence of celebrity door opener and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in their first home game of the series.

San Jose got 16 shots on goal in the first period, but were unable to get anything past Fleury, who rebounded well from his first loss of the post-season.

The Golden Knights didn’t manage as much pressure on Jones but did get the lone power play in the first period on a delay of game by Mikkel Boedker. San Jose killed the penalty to keep the game scoreless after one.

Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson won’t play Wednesday night against the Buffalo Sabres, and coach Guy Boucher says he’s not expecting the defenceman to join the team for its final two games.

The Senators let Karlsson determine his playing schedule so he could be close to his wife after their baby was stillborn two weeks ago. Karlsson played the past four games after missing three of four.

Though he’s not anticipating Karlsson to play, Boucher says he’s holding onto the possibility of the two-time Norris Trophy winner rejoining the team before Ottawa closes its season Saturday at Boston.

Ottawa has been eliminated from playoff contention and plays Friday at Pittsburgh.

Karlsson’s future in Ottawa is uncertain. Though he has one year left on his contract, the Senators are unsure if they can re-sign Karlsson to a long-term extension. They attempted to trade him this year.

Boucher also announced goalie Mike Condon will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a concussion in practice Tuesday.

Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson and his wife Melinda say their son, who they named Axel, was stillborn.

In a statement shared by Karlsson on his Twitter account Wednesday, the couple thanked supporters for the outpouring of condolences they received and for respecting their privacy after news of the loss of their son spread on social media.

“At this extremely difficult time it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but we know one day we’ll get there. We would like to thank everyone for the love and support we have received and also for respecting our privacy and the process that we need to go through,” the statement read. 

“We feel very lucky to be Axel’s parents. Even though he was stillborn, we know we will hold him again one day under different circumstances and the joy he gave us will be with us forever.”

The Ottawa Senators are heartbroken for their grieving captain.

The club revealed Tuesday that the son of Erik and Melinda Karlsson has died.

The couple announced they were expecting in November 2017. Karlsson had previously said the baby was due in mid-April, around the start of the NHL playoffs. 

The 27-year-old defenceman didn’t suit up in the Senators’ 7-2 loss to the Florida Panthers Tuesday night. Following the game, his teammates and head coach Guy Boucher offered their condolences. 

“Everybody is heartbroken, it’s awful,” Boucher said. “We definitely feel for Erik and his wife and his family.

“It’s been a tough year but this is a real personal, devastating blow to them. We feel for them and Erik is going to take the time he needs to come back and once he does we’ll do our best to support him. It’s definitely a sad day.”

Sens rally around their captain

Defenceman Mark Boroweicki said he couldn’t even imagine what the Karlssons are going through. 

“It puts perspective on life and what’s going on here. It’s important they take time to grieve and be together,” he said.

“There is so much love coming out of this dressing room for them. Erik is a huge part of this team and Erik and Melinda are a huge part of this community and this city. We really are a family in here and it hurts all of us deeply.”

In particular, Karlsson’s loss resonated with Senators forward Zach Smith.

“As expecting parents it hits a little deeper,” he said. “I don’t know what else to say. It’s devastating and I just feel terrible for them. I just hope they’re doing OK and we’ll be here to support them.”

Earlier Tuesday the organization issued a statement, offering its thoughts and prayers to the Karlsson family.

Condolences also poured in on Twitter.

Marc Savard, a former NHL player from Ottawa, also offered sympathy.

Erik Karlsson was still an Ottawa Senator after the NHL trade deadline and hopes to remain one for many more years.

The star defenceman was the centre of trade speculation for weeks ahead of Monday’s deadline but the club reportedly never came close to dealing the two-time Norris Trophy winner.

Karlsson, who can become an unrestricted free agent after the 2018-19 season, now hopes to sign a new deal to stay in Ottawa. Talks on a contract extension cannot begin until July 1.

“I’ve been here for a long time,” the nine-year Senator told reporters in Washington prior to Ottawa’s road game versus the Capitals on Tuesday night. “I’ve made Ottawa my home and it’s always going to be my home.

“When that time comes, I hope there’s a place for me in the future.”

The 27-year-old, who said he didn’t ask to be dealt. had never been involved in trade talk before. He didn’t like it.

“It’s been an extremely stressful time for me and my family,” he said. “I have a wife that’s halfway through a pregnancy.

“We just bought a home in Ottawa, so it’s been a new experience for me and for everybody that’s close to me.

“I never wanted to leave. That’s a different part of the business that I can’t control. Hearing your name being thrown around as much as it was is very stressful and not something I enjoyed going through. I love it here and I’ve always loved it here.”

Speculation on Karlsson’s future is likely to start up again in the summer, particularly leading up to the NHL draft in June in Dallas. GM Pierre Dorion has said he plans to offer Karlsson an extension July 1 if he’s still Ottawa property.

Concentrate on hockey

Karlsson said he’ll worry about that when the time comes. For now, the Senators captain is relieved to go back to concentrating on playing hockey.

Karlsson said he has felt back in top form since December after undergoing surgery to repair torn tendons in a foot last summer.

“I’m just going to worry about finishing this season as good as possible and try to make sure that some of the younger guys that are going to have regular spots next year are as comfortable as possible for when we start up next year,” he said. “There’s been a lot of changes made here recently and I’m sure there’s going to be a lot more as we head into the summer.

“Where that’s leading, I don’t know. I can’t speculate on that, so there’s no point for me to worry about that right now.”

A wide grin crossed Boucher’s face as the press conference room on Madison Square Garden’s fifth floor dissolved into laughter.

“Like all the other top quality stars that evolve into winners — whether it’s the [Sidney] Crosbys or those guys — that’s what he has,” Boucher said.

“That’s why those stars become winners.”

The Senators have reached the Eastern Conference final for the third time in franchise history, making it that deep into the playoffs in 2003 and 2007.

Ottawa won its best-of-seven series with New York 4-2, and awaits the winner of the Penguins-Capitals semi.

Game 7 of that series is Wednesday at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.

“We want more,” said Mark Stone, who along with Mike Hoffman and Jean-Gabriel Pageau also scored for the Senators. Craig Anderson stopped 37-of-39 shots.

Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider scored for New York. Henrik Lundqvist made 22 saves.

Loss especially tough for New York

For the second time in three years, the Rangers’ season ended on home ice. And for 22nd straight year, they begin their summer without a Stanley Cup to celebrate.

“It’s an emotional and tough loss for everybody,” New York coach Alain Vigneault said.

This might be the most painful defeat as Lundqvist turned 35 earlier this season, and there has been season-long speculation that general manager Jeff Gorton may attempt to either trade or buy out veteran defencemen Dan Girardi and Marc Staal in an attempt to get younger and free up salary cap space.

According to CapFriendly.com, New York has 18 players signed to NHL contracts worth $ 63.8 million US, and has $ 9.2 million in available cap space. The Rangers have six restricted free agents (Zibanejad, Brandon Pirri, Jesper Fast, Matt Puempel, Oscar Lindberg and Adam Clendening) and two unrestricted free agents (Tanner Glass and Brendan Smith).

“We are just going to have to wait and see,” Lundqvist said. “All you feel is disappointment and it’s a numb feeling. It’s not a great feeling.”

Hoffman deftly redirected Karlsson’s slap pass from the point 4:27 into the game to stop the Senators’ series-long trend of allowing the game-opening goal. Karlsson began the sequence which culminated with Hoffman’s fourth of the playoffs by blocking a Nick Holden shot before leading the rush up-ice.

‘That was something we needed’

Ottawa very nearly took a 2-0 lead with 6:49 left in the period on a Karlsson slapshot from the right wing, but Lundqvist made a dazzling glove save as he fell to the ice. But there was nothing the New York goalkeeper could do on Stone’s goal 1:36 later.

Stone’s goal, his fourth of the playoffs, was challenged by Vigneault as the Rangers believed Kyle Turris was offside. A review upheld the ruling on the ice.

“That was something we needed,” Karlsson said about playing with a lead. “We took care of the few [offensive opportunities] we got and made it hard for them to get through the neutral zone and create anything really dangerous.”

Zibanejad, an ex-Senator, halved the lead with a snapshot past Anderson’s glove at 13:32 of the second period.

The goal was Zibanejad’s second of the playoffs. But for all intents and purposes, Karlsson’s snapshot from the low slot at 15:53 ended the series. The goal was his second of the playoffs and his 13th point overall. It also finished a chain in which Mats Zuccarello’s diving, desperate cross-ice pass to Zibanejad was knocked away, leading to Karlsson’s counterattack with Bobby Ryan.

“That’s what special players do,” Stone said of Karlsson. “He’s, for me, a one-of-a-kind player. You don’t see guys do what he does on a night-to-night basis.”

Kreider’s third of the playoffs 53 seconds into the third cut the Senators’ lead to 3-2. Kreider had a chance to tie the game nearly five minutes later, but Anderson’s pad save kept Ottawa ahead. New York pressed in the third, but couldn’t score the tying goal. The Rangers outshot Ottawa, 15-5, in the period and 38-26 for the game.

“We had a lot of chances that I think we let slip through our fingers,” New York centre Derek Stepan said.

Pageau’s empty-netter with seven seconds left in the third ended the scoring.

Amongst the 18,006 in attendance were tennis legend John McEnroe, comedian John Oliver, Canadian singer Paul Anka, actress Debra Messing, actor Cuba Gooding Jr., and retired New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck.
