ABC is preparing to give viewers a Home Economics lesson, with a Spring 2021 comedy series starring and executive-produced by Topher Grace, TVLine has learned. The single-camera comedy explores “the heartwarming, yet super uncomfortable and sometimes frustrating relationship between three adult siblings: one in the 1 percent, one middle-class, and one barely holding on,” reads the official synopsis. Grace (That ’70s Show) will play middle sibling Tom, an intellectual/novelist who has had a couple of books that sold decently, though his last one did not. Caitlin McGee (Bluff City Law) portrays the eldest sibling, Sarah, a therapist for at-risk kids who is married to a teacher, and as such they’re often scraping to make ends meet. A doting mom to her two kids, she tries to be a guru to her two brothers, who obviously would be lost without her wisdom. Finally, Jimmy Tatro (Modern Family) will play third sibling Connor, who never met a corner he didn’t try to cut. Conner runs his own private equity firm and is outrageously wealthy. He has a keen financial mind, but he’s clueless about how to parent his young daughter Gretchen. He recently moved his family to the Bay Area so he could be closer to his siblings Tom and Sarah. But now he’s learning how his siblings actually feel about him. The cast also includes Karla Souza (How to Get Away With Murder) as Tom’s wife Marina, a proud New Yorker and former lawyer who would like to go back to work one day (if only to escape her children); SNL vet Sasheer Zamata as Sarah’s wife Denise, a superhumanly patient public-school teacher whose relentlessly positive attitude often perplexes the rest of the family; and a child actor ensemble populated by Shiloh Bearman, Jordyn Starr Curet, Chloe Jo Rountree and JeCobi Swain. Home Economics is written by Penguins of Madagascar’s Michael Colton and John Aboud and inspired by Colton’s family.

What a difference a year makes.
When How to Get Away With Murder‘s fourth season came to a close last March, Laurel Castillo’s father had been thrown in jail, her mother had gone off the grid, for better or worse, and life at Middleton University seemed to resume some version of normalcy (except for the lingering mystery of Gabriel Maddox, that is).
But during Thursday’s fifth season finale, the Castillo family made a comeback of sorts, reminding all of us — especially Laurel herself — that defeat won’t come so easily. First, let’s briefly break down what happened in the final Season 5 installment:
* Via flashbacks, we learn that Laurel’s brother, Xavier Castillo, had approached Ronald Miller a few months back, claiming that he could help make Miller the actual district attorney instead of just the interim guy — and it would start with the death of Nate Sr. Throughout the episode, we’re initially led to believe that Miller wanted to work with Xavier wholeheartedly, and that he was OK with Nate Sr.’s murder if it meant becoming D.A. Later, though, it’s revealed that Miller secretly tried to get Nate Sr. transferred from the prison on Wednesday night, a full 12 hours earlier than the Thursday-morning transfer that Xavier had requested, in order to avoid Nate Sr. getting killed.
Miller’s efforts, though, were all for naught. Xavier had found out that Miller was trying to play him, and he paid the prison guards to kill Nate Sr. when he was being moved at night. Miller had been heartbroken to see Nate Sr.’s death on the news, and even more devastated to realize that he’d gotten involved with someone very, very dangerous.
* Laurel sees the video footage of her brother meeting with Nate Sr. at the prison, and she’s convinced that her family has been behind all of these unsavory events ever since Wes died. Together, she and Annalise confront Xavier and reveal what they know: that Xavier had Nate Sr. killed, that he’s been working with Gov. Birkhead to destroy Annalise and that he killed Sandrine. (Xavier claims not to know anything about his mother’s whereabouts and insists he didn’t hurt her… but this is also Xavier Castillo we’re talking about, so I don’t exactly trust him.)
After Laurel and Annalise leave, Xavier calls Gov. Birkhead and reveals that his sister and Annalise foiled his master plan. “So, Plan B?” he asks the governor, to which she responds, “She’s given us no other choice.” Later, while Annalise and Laurel are walking down a Philadelphia street, Annalise answers a phone call from Tegan — and halfway through the conversation, she realizes that Laurel is no longer standing next to her. In fact, Laurel is nowhere to be found.
At the same time, Frank bursts into Laurel’s house and races up to Christopher’s nursery, only to find that Christopher is missing from his crib. “He’s gone, Annalise. They’re both gone,” Frank tells Annalise, who is left to helplessly scream Laurel’s name in the middle of the street.
* Gov. Birkhead goes on live television to tell the people of Pennsylvania that Emmett Crawford is a person of interest in both Nate Sr.’s death and Miller’s death. Even worse for Emmett? After pouring himself a drink in his office later that night, he falls to the floor, convulsing, having presumably been poisoned. (Or perhaps having a heart attack? He is clutching his chest, after all.) Emmett is still alive the last time we see him, even though he’s gasping for air — but on the other hand, Timothy Hutton did just book a pilot for the fall TV season. Hmm.
After screening Thursday’s finale, TVLine spoke with HTGAWM star Karla Souza, who portrays Laurel, to get her insights on her character’s mysterious disappearance (and what it means for a potential Season 6). Read on for her thoughts:
TVLINE | I was a little surprised to see Laurel’s family return in such a big way this season, given how nicely that storyline seemed to wrap up in Season 4. Were you surprised by that, as well, or was this something you and showrunner Pete Nowalk had previously discussed when Season 5 began?
Ever since my family was first revealed in the show at that dinner party [in Season 1], Pete had deliberately planned for my father, my mother and my brother [to be involved]. I had previously done an audition with someone to play [Castillo family friend] Dominick, and Gerardo [Celasco], who plays my brother, had auditioned with me. He was lovely, and he and I had a lot of chemistry, but I remember Pete saying, “I’m holding off because I think he looks like you too much. I don’t think he should play Dominick, I think he should play your brother later on in the show.” So, I had heard Pete’s idea to have my brother in the background, kind of as the Mini-Me version of my father. And seeing as my father was put in prison, I also had that idea of, “OK, that storyline’s kind of wrapped up, that’s it.”
But when I was talking to Pete creatively, as we have every year, we were talking about the implications of what it means to have a son in all of this. Once Christopher’s involved and witnesses a murder, I would definitely make a decision about that, as a new mom. I couldn’t just keep saying, “Oh, this isn’t safe for my son,” and just not do anything. Something must be done. Laurel sees that however much they try to get out of the danger zone, they just keep coming back, and then after she receives her mom’s scalp, she realizes that her premonitions of how evil her family can be are true. In a way, it adds to the guilt of Laurel feeling that her family has been involved in all of the bad stuff that’s happened to the Keating Five since Wes’ death. That’s why it makes this disappearance interesting. The fans might think that Laurel disappeared of her own accord, or that maybe Laurel was abducted by her family in some way, or killed. Those are two avenues that could very well be plausible because of Laurel’s constant fear of having Christopher in this world.
TVLINE | In this finale, the Keating Five learns that Laurel had the opportunity to take an immunity deal with the FBI, which she chose not to do. Did Laurel ever seriously consider taking the deal and getting out of there?
For sure. I definitely played, at least for me, that it was a possibility. If you had to decide whether to protect your son or protect your friends — as a mom, all bets are off when it’s regarding your child. [Laughs] But however close she comes to making that decision, she also realizes the loyalty she has for them. And because of the guilt she feels at her family being the motor of all the bad things going on, that’s why she decides to hold herself accountable and promise that she will be loyal to them. It’s her way of saying, “No, you guys have been loyal to me, I’ll be loyal to you,” and she has to think of another plan.
TVLINE | Laurel has a big confrontation with her brother in this episode, but he seems to be genuinely surprised by the news that something bad happened to their mother. Does Laurel have any doubts in that moment? Did Xavier perhaps have nothing to do with it?
As we were working that scene out with Gerardo and [episode director] Stephen Cragg, we said that Laurel’s been the No. 1 concealer of all her cards on the show. She’s been able to put on a front for anyone questioning her, she puts on a whole show for Gabriel. And because [Laurel and Xavier] are part of the same family… it’s open as to whether he knows or not. He plays it very well, but I would say let’s not be fooled by a Castillo. [Laughs] That’s all I would say about that.
TVLINE | And at the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, do viewers have reason to be suspicious of Laurel, as well? We never did see Laurel’s last conversation with her mom, and we don’t know for sure that she didn’t hurt Sandrine. Should we take Laurel’s words at face value and believe that she’s simply a victim of her terrible family?
No, I don’t think Laurel is a victim. I definitely think she plays a part in it, and for me, that’s the more interesting part to play. We’ve seen, more and more often — I mean, she hid that [engagement] ring from Michaela for so long [in Season 1]. She’s capable of a lot of things to get her own way. And now, her own way is protecting her son, so she’s capable of hiding and portraying whatever she needs to in order to have that plan work.
TVLINE | The show hasn’t been renewed for Season 6 just yet, but this finale ends on a major cliffhanger. Were there ever any discussions with Pete, or the writers, about giving this episode a tidier ending since the show’s future is uncertain?
I genuinely think… you know, it would be wrong of me to speak for Pete, but for us, as we’re reading the season, we’re seeing how our show still has a strong fanbase. We’ve never doubted that the show would be picked up. Having Viola Davis at the forefront of a show for network TV — I feel like they’re lucky to have her. I don’t think the writers were thinking that this would be our last season, and I never got the sense from Pete that he felt he had to have a Plan B. I do think he has confidence in the show and the writing.

Sorry, Carmen Sandiego. After that How to Get Away With Murder premiere, we’re more concerned with someone else’s whereabouts.
The ABC drama returned for its fourth season on Thursday, and of the many questions we were left with after the episode, one of them is especially worrying: Where is Laurel’s baby?
Laurel, who’s already having a sufficiently miserable year, kicks off the episode by announcing to her father — aka the man responsible for Wes’ death — that she was pregnant, but had an abortion weeks ago. It isn’t until later in the hour that we learn Laurel actually plans to keep the baby, with a due date five months from now, but decided to keep the truth from her meddling dad.
An early frontrunner has emerged in the race for this year’s Unluckiest TV Character: How to Get Away With Murder‘s poor, poor Laurel Castillo.
Her onetime beau, Frank, went MIA for weeks — and when she tried to get information on his whereabouts, she was forced to sign her life away to her father. She barely survived a house fire that killed her next boyfriend, Wes, and she’s unexpectedly pregnant with his child.
And, although she doesn’t know it yet, Laurel can add one more thing to her long list of adversity: Her own father was responsible for Wes’ death. Granted, it wasn’t Mr. Castillo who physically killed Laurel’s boyfriend. But he did mastermind the explosion at Annalise’s house, and seemingly recruited a family friend, Dominic, to off Wes before the place went up in flames. (Connor, on the other hand, really was just trying to save Wes that night, after he found him unconscious in the basement — a result of Dominic drugging Wes, gagging him and suffocating him before cutting the house’s gas line.)
Until she finds out who’s actually behind Wes’ demise, though, Laurel is left to zero in on another likely suspect during Thursday’s season finale: Charles Mahoney. When Skeezy McSlimeball gets released from jail, Laurel enlists Michaela and Asher to help her confront the man about Wes’ death. But as she rushes down a crowded New York City street toward the Mahoney son, with a gun stashed in her purse (?!), Laurel is interrupted by none other than Dominic — don’t hug him, Laurel! He murdered your man! — while Charles Mahoney drives off in a taxi.
Laurel also comes to find, during a very public and vulnerable moment on the witness stand, that the contract she signed for her father all those weeks ago was not what she initially thought. Rather, it was an affidavit, stating that Laurel committed perjury as a teenager when she claimed she was kidnapped. D.A. Denver blindsides Laurel with this information during a hearing for Annalise’s case, and just like that, any opportunity that Laurel had to help her professor is lost.
Now that we know #WhoKilledWes, TVLine hopped on the phone with Karla Souza to discuss the episode’s major revelations — but first, a few other events of note from the two-hour finale:
* When Oliver hacks A.D.A. Atwood’s Wi-Fi, he discovers a blocked number that Atwood both dialed and received calls from on the night that Wes died (and the day his body was moved). Despite protests from his peers, Asher dials the mystery number… and a burner phone in Denver’s desk drawer begins to ring.
Realizing that the D.A.’s office has been framing her all along, Annalise comes up with a way out of her season-long legal bind: She’ll present Denver with a voicemail that Wes left on her phone the night of the fire, seemingly incriminating him for the deaths of both Sam and Rebecca. If Denver brings that voicemail to the judge in Annalise’s case, with a new theory that Wes actually killed himself due to intense guilt, then Annalise and Frank will go free, and the whole investigation can be called off. If not? Well, Annalise is ready for a fight. (Naturally, Denver chooses the former option, because no one in their right mind actually wants to go to head-to-head with Annalise in a courtroom.)
* Wes wasn’t Wallace Mahoney’s son — he was Charles Mahoney’s son. Gasp.
* A rare moment of happy news: Asher and Michaela love each other! And Oliver proposes to Connor! (But doesn’t get an answer! Yet!)
* In the finale’s closing scene, Annalise explains to her Alcoholics Anonymous group the bond she had with Wes, and how she tried to look after him during his time at Middleton. But when she draws a parallel between Wes’ death and the death of her own infant son, Annalise breaks down over losing Wes: “He felt like my son… because he was my son,” she sobs. “He was my son. And he’s gone.”
Below, while you tear through a fresh box of Kleenex, Souza breaks down the finale’s most shocking moments — and the emotional arc that awaits Laurel in Season 4.
TVLINE | What was your reaction when you learned who was behind Wes’ death? Was Laurel’s dad someone you ever suspected?
I definitely never thought my dad would have involvement with killing the love of my life. And in the episode where I decided to sign my soul away to him, we now find out that I was actually signing a piece of paper that said I was never kidnapped, even though I was. The fact that he just keeps ruining my life is definitely something that will grow in Season 4. It was a shock to know my dad was involved in that, and I don’t even know how I’m going to deal, Laurel-wise, with that. It took us all by surprise.
TVLINE | Was there ever a part of you that suspected Laurel had killed Wes, given that she was in the house at the time?
Oh, God. [Laughs] No, I did not suspect that Laurel killed Wes. If that had been the case, Laurel would have been very psychotic, because she was actually in love with him. I knew that’s what I was playing.
TVLINE | The last time we saw Laurel meet with her dad, she was seeking information about Frank. What do you think his motives were to come back into her life at this juncture and kill Wes, of all people?
We don’t even know if the father intended to kill Wes specifically. Who knows who he thought was going to be in the house? He did blow up Annalise’s house, and we don’t know if Wes was supposed to be there in the first place. Whether Dominic was intending to kill Wes — he’s supposed to be a close family friend, so that’s going to be a jarring moment of realization for Laurel. And [showrunner] Pete [Nowalk] is really bringing it back [to the early seasons]. In Season 1, I had a moment with my family at the dinner table where I told them about Annalise and how dark all the things that were happening in my life were. I’m not surprised if my dad had someone investigate what was going on and find out about all the murders, and then decided to save me in his own way.
TVLINE | Have you spoken with [showrunner] Pete [Nowalk] about Laurel’s emotional trajectory in Season 4 at all? Even at the end of this finale, she didn’t really have closure about Wes’ death.
We’ve talked a lot about it, especially the pregnancy. She’s still going through grief while being pregnant, and she has a big decision to make. And now, she has the fact that she committed perjury — or, at least, that’s what people are making it out to be. Her world is crumbling in, but I do think there’s a lot of fight left in Laurel. She’s going to want to come to the end of avenging Wes’ death and finding out what really happened. We’re definitely going to dive into Laurel’s family in Season 4.
TVLINE | Speaking of the pregnancy, we saw Laurel discuss options with her doctor in this episode. How do you predict she’ll move forward with the decision to keep the baby or have an abortion?
Personally — and this is just Karla talking — I want Laurel to keep the baby. It’s all she has left of Wes and that love of her life. It would be very interesting to see what it’s like to have a baby while at law school. She has the financial means. Her family can definitely help in that respect. There’s always options; she could give it up for adoption. But I would definitely like to see us touching upon what it would mean for a law student to be pregnant and to make that decision — what the effects, psychologically, of being pregnant in school might be. That would be a very interesting storyline.
TVLINE | Before Dominic approached Laurel on the street, she seemed dead-set on using that gun in her purse on Charles Mahoney. Would she have killed him, given the opportunity?
I don’t think that was… [Sighs] You know what? I actually do. She was so hyped up. Perhaps, if they had gotten into an altercation, she maybe would have done something that she would have regretted afterward. But she really just wanted to confront him and get the truth [in that moment]. She’s thinking, “All is lost. All I want is to be able to know what happened to Wes.” But then when Dominic intercepts her, she’s relieved in a way, because outside on the street is probably not the best way to confront a man with a gun. [Laughs]
