It was not so much any grand plan but a bit of online shopping that led Kaley Cuoco to the project that would net the Big Bang alum her first-ever Golden Globe nominations — plural, as both an actress and as an executive producer.

As Cuoco winningly detailed in a THR TV’s Top 5 podcast, years ago she was up late browsing for a new read when Chris Bohjalian’s The Flight Attendant caught her eye. “The cover was a woman with blonde hair, and she was running…. It was a very wispy, cool cover,” she shared.

Nearing what would be the end of Big Bang‘s run, Cuoco was being nudged to consider her “next act.” And after reading the thriller’s cover flap, she jumped to option the rights for what would be the first series from her production company Yes, Norman (named after the canine companion she heartbreakingly said goodbye to just weeks ago, after 14 years).

Not 24 hours after Cuoco’s Globes nods were announced (watch her emotional reaction here), the SAG Awards nominated her for Best Comedy Actress and the show for Best Comedy Ensemble. And somewhere in between it all, she hopped on the phone with TVLine to react to The Flight Attendant‘s clearly successful landing.

TVLINE | You have had a very emotional 2021 so far.
Yes. So many ups and downs…. This is definitely an up moment, for sure.

TVLINE | Who’s more excited, Kaley the Actress or Kaley the Executive Producer? Or are they taking turns?
Oh man…. You know, maybe Kaley the Actress, because I’ve been doing this for 30 years. Like, I’ve done it for so long and love being an actor so much, I don’t think of moments like this. And so I’ll never forget this moment. Like, I really won’t. I’m so bursting at the seams.

TVLINE | When you’re developing The Flight Attendant, and when you’re shooting it, obviously you want it to be very good, you want it to be high-quality…. But does it ever slip into your mind, “This could be award-worthy”?
No. If we started thinking that, that would be a problem. All that went through my mind for the past three-and-a-half years since I optioned this book is, “Oh my God, am I making a mistake? Are people going to hate this? Are they going to love it? Oh God, this is so bad, what am I doing? Why am I doing this?”

Being an EP now, you just know way too much, you see all the struggle. As an actor, I get to wake up and walk in, you do your job and then you leave, and you see the end product. But learning the road to the end product, it actually makes this even sweeter, because you know how hard the work is, and how much of a huge team effort it takes.

TVLINE | And all for a property that you bought based on the cover while online shopping one night!
[Laughs] That is very true, yes. I saw the cover of the book, and I read one sentence on Amazon. I then went through the option process for six months while I was reading it, and it was crazy. But I just loved Cassie, and I knew this could be a good show. I remember walking into the studio and saying, “I think this is the next show, but we’ve got to do it right. It’s international, and we can’t do this on a soundstage.” They go, “OK, but it’s going to be expensive,” and I was like, “Yes. Yes, it is.” And then I thought, “Oh God, they’re not going to make this thing. We can’t go around the world, like, what am I thinking?” But they did.

schitts-creek photos happy endingsTVLINE | You watch some TV. Are you familiar at all with any of your competitors in the comedy and comedy actress categories?
Yes, and I actually have a story. So, Catherine O’Hara is one of my favorite actresses ever, and I had not heard of Schitt’s Creek until maybe two years ago, when I was in Thailand shooting Flight Attendant. That was a great experience but it was rough, long hours, in a place I didn’t know, and I said to someone, “I’ve got to get into a new show, I need something to distract me.” They said, “Why don’t you watch Schitt’s Creek?”

I started watching Schitt’s Creek on set, in between takes, and I would literally walk around and talk to everyone like Moira, trying to do her voice. And they’d be like, “Oh God — Kaley’s engrossed in Schitt’s Creek. This is going to be a thing,” because I would, like, become Moira and just be this crazy person. [Laughs] Her scenes got me through shooting my show. So to be in this category with Catherine is something I wouldn’t have ever even dreamed of. I feel extremely honored.

Flight Attendant Annie CassieTVLINE | A few of our readers were surprised to see Flight Attendant competing as a comedy….
Well, [the show] is funny. I mean, I feel that we created a tone that you don’t see very often —  it wasn’t a drama, it wasn’t a comedy, it wasn’t sad, it wasn’t happy. It was such a range of stuff, and to be able to make you laugh through some horrors that we shot, I feel that’s why it was a comedy. There were moments that were lighthearted, really crazy comedic moments that we felt were very, very special, and that it lent itself to comedy.

TVLINE | Flight Attendant was Yes, Norman’s first big swing. How does this shape what you decide to pursue next as a production company?
I mean, this was literally our first swing. Yes, Norman came about after I optioned this book, and kind of was based around what this project would be. Also, coming off Big Bang, I got asked a lot, “Were you trying to find something that was so different than Penny?,” blah, blah, blah. The truth is — and I really mean this — I wasn’t. I wasn’t looking for something that was so opposite Big Bang. I didn’t care. I loved being part of Big Bang, but I like to go by my gut, and there was something about this that was very gut-driven, and that is how we work at Yes, Norman. We’re not searching for anything specific. If it hits us in the right spot, and it’s with the right people, then we want to do it.

Flight Attendant Kaley CuocoTVLINE | All right, tell me everything you know about Season 2….
God, I know nothing. We just literally got our writers’ room together, so as far as story, there’s nothing there quite yet. But as far as the emotional arc with Cassie, she is going to be trying to live a sober life. But as we know, she’s very impatient, so she thinks that things are going to be super-easy, that this is going to be no big deal, and she’s going to realize really fast that this is going to be a lifelong struggle for her.

TVLINE | Which is how alcoholism is.
Absolutely, but she wants things to be easy and quick, and she is going to realize really fast that this will not happen overnight.

TVLINE | I mean… she drank a lot.
She drank a lot. I had to pee so often on that set, I drank so much water. I was constantly drinking so much water out of those [airplane vodka] bottles….

Flight Attendant Season 2TVLINE | [Showrunner] Steve Yockey told me that there will be a “mind palace” device again, but it’ll obviously be different.
We will, yes. I don’t exactly know how they’re going to do it, but we’ve definitely confirmed that. I think there’s going to be a little bit of Cassie almost in her own mind, if that makes sense, her kind of talking to herself and facing her own demons truly head-on again.

TVLINE | I’m frankly worried for Rosie Perez’s character. Given her storyline, it’d be easy to kill her off and then she is with Cassie in a new mind palace.
We need to find Rosie’s character — Megan became such a fan favorite — and that will be a really big storyline. We’re excited to see where that goes.

TVLINE | Lastly, what are your wants for Season 2? Or, is there anything you’ll be mindful to not do?
What are my wants? You know, it’s so early to know…. We had such a great Season 1, but I want it to even be better, even though that’s hard to do. And I want to come out swinging. What I appreciate with the show, with Steve and our writers, is they really let me go ballistic. I mean, you saw it on-screen. I would like to go ballistic again and keep spreading my wings, because it just became its own entity and I don’t even know what I did half the time. I kind of just left it on the field and walked away, like, “Well, f–k, I hope that worked!”

Big Bang Theory’s Johnny Galecki jokes he’s unfollowed Kaley Cuoco after Instagram clip https://briefnews.eu/big-bang-theorys-johnny-galecki-jokes-hes-unfollowed-kaley-cuoco-after-instagram-clip/ https://briefnews.eu/big-bang-theorys-johnny-galecki-jokes-hes-unfollowed-kaley-cuoco-after-instagram-clip/#respond Mon, 11 Jan 2021 06:07:40 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/big-bang-theorys-johnny-galecki-jokes-hes-unfollowed-kaley-cuoco-after-instagram-clip/

The cast of comedy hit The Big Bang Theory have kept their sense of humour during the coronavirus pandemic after the sitcom came to an end in 2019. A recent Instagram video from Kaley Cuoco and husband Karl Cook led to an unexpected reunion with her CBS co-star Johnny Galecki.

A cute and insightful Instagram video from Kaley Cuoco and her husband Karl Cook received a sarcastic comment from her former Big Bang co-star Johnny Galecki over the weekend.

The pair recently took to social media for a ‘walk and talk’ video explaining more about their shared love of showjumping and their experiences as a couple.

Cuoco captioned the post: “A cup of walking and taking! Get it? Horse showing with your significant other. Do’s and don’ts!”

Before quarantining together during the coronavirus pandemic, Cuoco and professional equestrian Karl Cook lived separately and train with separate showjumping teams.

Fans loved watching their dynamic play out on camera, and one half of CBS’s iconic sitcom couple seemed particularly taken by Penny’s real life partner.

Leonard Hofstadter Johnny Galecki commented: “I watched almost half of this. The result is that I am Unfollowing you and now Following @mrtankcook [Karl Cook].”

His comment sparked an uproarious reaction from Big Bang fans, including one who said: “Love that all of you are still best of friends. Please stay safe and healthy from covid Johnny.”

Cuoco and Galecki privately dated for around two years after the show first started back in 2007, and have remained on good terms since separating.

She also met her current husband through her second passion, showjumping, and used her Instagram platform to detail how she balances her career and personal life.

Cuoco said: “Even though we go to the same shows a lot of the time and we stable next to each other – and now it’s been many years, our teams know each other. But, there’s no cross-cantering.”

Cuoco’s puns caused Cook to put his head in his hands, and at one point he sighed: “Your analogies, honey…”

The equestrian pro then explained: “A lot of people they ask the question, ‘what’s it like showing together? It must be hard’.”

“A lot of people have this assumption that it is hard. I don’t think it’s hard; does that mean it was always easy? We figured out that it works for us.”

Following the new post, another fan commented: “Omg y’all are such an awesome couple! Cross cantering, I love it!”

Although The Big Bang Theory has been off screens for well over a year, the cast remain squarely in the public eye and Kaley Cuoco has proven she’s still a star to watch out for.

The Big Bang Theory is available to watch on Netflix.

Performer of the Week: Kaley Cuoco https://briefnews.eu/performer-of-the-week-kaley-cuoco/ https://briefnews.eu/performer-of-the-week-kaley-cuoco/#respond Sat, 19 Dec 2020 15:10:00 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/performer-of-the-week-kaley-cuoco/ THE PERFORMER | Kaley Cuoco

THE SHOW | HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant

THE EPISODE | “Arrivals and Departures” (Dec. 17, 2020)

THE PERFORMANCE | As intense as her performance was during the Episode 6 meltdown, the dramedic thriller’s eighth and final episode gave Cuoco something new and differently engaging to do: play Cassie Bowden as someone just a bit more sober, and thus a bit more able to sincerely engage with those around her. And we were rapt.

Take the scene in which Cassie caught up to fellow fly girl Megan at her Rome hotel room, to finally be honest and recognize the fact that after so many years of traveling the world together, yes, they are absolutely “friends.” What could have come off as a platitude was so much more, because of the way Cuoco warmly played the declaration. Similarly, what would be Cassie’s “goodbye” to Alex (after he cleaned all the blood off himself!) made us wish we had seen more of their whirlwind romance.

On the more out there front, the mind palace encounter between Cassie and her younger, guilt-ridden self (played by Audrey Grace Marshall) was arguably one of Cuoco’s very best scenes of the season. For as ineffectual as her words would be, Cassie advising — nay, begging — the tween to never blame herself for her father’s drunk-driving death revealed so much about the pain she has lived with for decades.

Last, but sweetest, was Cassie’s dialogue with Enrico’s nonna, who surmised that the sudden need for his grandfather’s gun was to help his “luminous” friend. Working with plainer words as she navigated Italian, Cuoco showed a new layer to Cassie’s vulnerability, only hinting at the insane, dangerous odyssey in which she was enmired. Though we had spent eight hours witnessing it in full, her candor with Nonna broke our hearts anew.

Mandalorian pedro PascalHONORABLE MENTION | It wasn’t until 16 episodes into the Disney+ series that Pedro Pascal got to do his best “unmasked” acting as The Mandalorian. Well, let’s just say that the Season 2 finale was a very special occasion. Upon meeting the Jedi who came calling for Grogu, Mando was rightly the protective pop. But once this stranger avowed that he will protect the Child’s life with his own, Mando agreed to part ways with his powerful ward, telling him, “That’s who you belong with. He’s one of your kind,” adding: “I’ll see you again. I promise.” Then, when Din doffed his helmet at the Child’s urging, the look on Pascal’s face added volumes to the mere 10 words to come. “All right, pal. It’s time to go,” he said, as the kid’s big eyes took in his protector’s true face, which his wee hand then touched. “Don’t be afraid.” This is the way… to our hearts.

The Christmas SetUpHONORABLE MENTION | The most groundbreaking aspect of Lifetime’s first LGBTQ-themed holiday movie The Christmas Setup was not that it had a gay couple at its center. It was that it was actually really good. Yes, all the yuletide tropes were present and accounted for, but there was genuine warmth in place of cheese, and much of the cozy credit goes to Fran Drescher. Playing the mother of a gay son (Arrow‘s adorably neurotic Ben Lewis), Drescher’s Kate was supportive without being cloying, doting but not oppressively so. And when her pride and joy found love under the proverbial mistletoe with his high school crush (played by Lewis’ swoon-worthy real-life husband Blake Lee), Drescher layered her alter ego’s unabashed glee with notes of genuine happiness. In a sea of indistinguishable, cookie-cutter holiday movie matriarchs, Drescher gifted us with a true Christmas miracle: an actual human being.

The Stand JK SimmonsHONORABLE MENTION | J.K. Simmons only had one scene in the opening hour of The Stand, but for our money, it was the most compelling one of the episode. As Gen. Starkey, the enigmatic and little-seen military man overseeing a CDC facility in Vermont, Simmons brought a solemnity that made our hearts ache for this character we’d only just met. With no men left to command — they were all dead of the Captain Trips virus, which Starkey himself had also contracted — the general was both resolute and devastated in the face of imminent death. Simmons’ recitation of the Yeats poem “The Second Coming” is now among the year’s most stirring line readings, and the tears in his eyes as Starkey prepared to take his own life softened a man that we initially viewed as intimidating and powerful. Of the many characters who perished in The Stand‘s first hour, Starkey quickly became the one we’ll miss most, largely due to Simmons’ episode-stealing work.

Kaley Cuoco’s Flight Attendant Has a Toxic Hookup in HBO Max Trailer https://briefnews.eu/kaley-cuocos-flight-attendant-has-a-toxic-hookup-in-hbo-max-trailer/ https://briefnews.eu/kaley-cuocos-flight-attendant-has-a-toxic-hookup-in-hbo-max-trailer/#respond Tue, 20 Oct 2020 17:08:39 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/kaley-cuocos-flight-attendant-has-a-toxic-hookup-in-hbo-max-trailer/

Kaley Cuoco’s titular Flight Attendant has a one-night stand to remember in the HBO Max series’ first trailer. And yet, she apparently has forgotten critical (deadly?) parts of the impulsive encounter.

HBO Max also has revealed the rollout plan for the The Flight Attendant, which (akin to Love Life and Raised by Wolves) will premiere with three episodes on Thursday, Nov. 26, followed by two more episodes on Dec. 3, two episodes on Dec. 10, and then the season finale on Dec. 17.

Based on Chris Bohjalian’s 2018 novel of the same name and described as “a story of how an entire life can change in one night,” The Flight Attendant follows the Big Bang Theory alum’s titular Cassandra Bowden, who wakes up hungover in a Dubai hotel room… with a dead body next to her, and no idea what happened. Instead of informing the police, she joins her fellow crew members on a flight to NYC, where she is met by FBI agents with a few questions about her recent layover. Unable to piece together what happened, Cassandra begins to suspect that she might be the killer.

In addition to Cuoco, who also serves as an executive producer (alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and others), The Flight Attendant‘s cast includes Zosia Mamet (Girls), Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones), Rosie Perez (Rise), T.R. Knight (Grey’s Anatomy), Colin Woodell (The Originals), Michelle Gomez (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Merle Dandridge (Greenleaf), Griffin Matthews (Dear White People) and Nolan Gerard Funk (Awkward).

How Kaley Cuoco Found Harley Quinn’s Voice — and Whether the Bawdy Baddie’s Language Got Too Foul for Her https://briefnews.eu/how-kaley-cuoco-found-harley-quinns-voice-and-whether-the-bawdy-baddies-language-got-too-foul-for-her/ https://briefnews.eu/how-kaley-cuoco-found-harley-quinns-voice-and-whether-the-bawdy-baddies-language-got-too-foul-for-her/#respond Thu, 28 Nov 2019 21:47:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-kaley-cuoco-found-harley-quinns-voice-and-whether-the-bawdy-baddies-language-got-too-foul-for-her/

RELATED STORIES

“Party’s over, you pieces of s–t!”

The ever-irrepressible Harley Quinn makes her grand entrance this Friday on the DC Universe digital subscription service, while spitting out those choice six words. But make no mistake, that last word — like scores upon scores that follow — is not bleeped or otherwise censored in this TV-MA ‘toon.

“Look, I love going in the booth and screaming and cussing for two straight hours,” says Big Bang Theory alum Kaley Cuoco, who voices the titular villainess. “I usually do that alone in my bedroom, so I’ve been able to experience that in a whole other way.”

With Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern (of the DC Comics-based Powerless sitcom) serving as showrunners, Harley Quinn finds “Joker’s girlfriend” fed up with being described and dismissed as just that. So she breaks up with her “Puddin’” and ventures out to make her own name as a crime kingpin, assembling a crew of “the f–king worst” bad guys available.

Lake Bell (Bless This Mess) voices Poison Ivy, who fast emerges as a BFF to Harley, while other cast — many of them also voice acting vets — includes Diedrich Bader (American Housewife) as Batman; Alan Tudyk (Firefly) as both Joker and Clayface; J.B. Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm) as Ivy’s “roommate,” Frank the Plant; Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU) as a hard-drinking Commissioner Gordon; Ron Funches (Undateable) as King Shark; Jim Rash (Community) as Riddler; Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) as Lex Luthor; Rahul Kohli (iZombie) as Scarecrow; Sanaa Lathan (The Affair) as Catwoman; Jacob Tremblay (Room) as Damian Wayne/Robin; and James Adomian (BoJack Horseman) as a mercilessly and amusingly mocked Bane.

Season 1 consists of 13 episodes, to release weekly every Friday (a la DC Universe’s Titans and Doom Patrol). But Cuoco in fact had a few of those first entries already in the can once she truly found Harley’s perfect voice.

“After a a few weeks, it became more manic and hysterical, so I wanted to go back and re-record [the earlier episodes] to make sure it was just as badass from the beginning,” Cuoco tells TVLine.

Harley Quinn“I think with any character, especially when on a new show, it takes some getting used to,” she continues, describing voice acting’s unique process. “I’ve perfected certain looks and facial expressions over the years, so this in a way was harder — also because I’m voicing someone as iconic as Harley. And also, my voice is very recognizable, so I didn’t want to force an accent or try to be someone I’m not. I’m ‘Kaley as Harley,’ and accepting that early on enabled me to me free and very authentic.”

But was Cuoco prepared for just how “free” Harley Quinn would be with swear words, cusses, expletives and racy banter? (Episode 2, for example, has a subplot involving Penguin’s nephew’s bar mitzvah and… fingerbanging.) Did any of the dialogue, especially in aggregation, ever give her pause?

“Not for a second,” she asserts with a laugh.

Harley Quinn Trailer: Kaley Cuoco Dishes Out Big Bangs! Pows! Thunks! as Gotham’s Infamous Queenpin https://briefnews.eu/harley-quinn-trailer-kaley-cuoco-dishes-out-big-bangs-pows-thunks-as-gothams-infamous-queenpin/ https://briefnews.eu/harley-quinn-trailer-kaley-cuoco-dishes-out-big-bangs-pows-thunks-as-gothams-infamous-queenpin/#respond Sun, 21 Jul 2019 11:13:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/harley-quinn-trailer-kaley-cuoco-dishes-out-big-bangs-pows-thunks-as-gothams-infamous-queenpin/

“Big bang” takes on a whole new meaning for Kaley Cuoco in her upcoming animated series Harley Quinn, a new trailer for which was released Saturday night in conjunction with the DC Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

Mouthing off as Gotham’s saucy queenpin, infamously played by Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad, Cuoco, who is also an executive producer on the show, kicks series butt — and to the tune of “Love Is All Around,” the Mary Tyler Moore Show theme, no less.

Spotted trading blows and/or glances with the anti-heroine in the action-packed clip are the familiar faces of, among others, Batman, serious as ever, Poison Ivy and the Joker, who winds up on the receiving end of a punch as well as a punchline.

The irreverent (and that’s putting it mildly!) cartoon — whose pilot was screened during the panel as well — is set to make its debut on the digital subscription service this fall. Its leading lady, of course, just wrapped a wildly successful 12-season run as Penny on CBS’ already-missed Big Bang Theory.

To check out the trailer, press PLAY on the video above. Then riddle us this: Will you be going on Harley Quinn’s wild ride? Or will you hold out for Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) to hit theaters?

The Big Bang Theory season 12 spoilers: Kaley Cuoco teases her ‘unforgettable’ finale https://briefnews.eu/the-big-bang-theory-season-12-spoilers-kaley-cuoco-teases-her-unforgettable-finale/ https://briefnews.eu/the-big-bang-theory-season-12-spoilers-kaley-cuoco-teases-her-unforgettable-finale/#respond Thu, 04 Apr 2019 02:55:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-big-bang-theory-season-12-spoilers-kaley-cuoco-teases-her-unforgettable-finale/

Just three more episodes of the hit CBS show remain and Penny Hofstadter star Cuoco has posted an emotional video on Instagram of her thoughts as the finale approaches.

The video features her and her dog as they reflect on filming.

She told fans: “There’s only three more Big Bangs after this – that’s crazy,’ she began. ‘I had so many friends and family here tonight. I feel very loved and supported. Everybody wants to be there for the last few and it feels really, really good so thank you for that.

“These next few weeks are going to be very, very unforgettable.”

The star has spoken out previously about the ‘heartbreaking’ finale and revealed why the live audience will be cut for the season finale.

She told E!News: “We’re actually going to pre-shoot the whole thing, so we’ll have shot it, and then we will have an audience taping. That was probably because they knew I’d be crying the entire time.

“So we still want the audience experience. We’re gonna still do the audience, but we will have taped it and shot it beforehand, so if the tears come unexpectedly, then that’s just what’s going to happen, because I guarantee you it’s going to happen.”

When the news of the air date for the final episode was announced, Cuoco put it on her Instagram story with the caption: “I’m not crying, you’re crying.”

She also admitted in August last year she was “drowning in tears,” at the announcement the show was to end.

She is clearly in love with the show and admitted to PopSugar about the ending: “It’s going to be a surprise to all of us. Everyone is struggling to let go of this show, even the writers.

“I know that we’re all going to freak out reading that final episode. I hope that whatever loose ends they felt [they] needed to tie up will be tied up.

“I’m sure they want to see where all these characters end up, and I think the writers don’t want to leave some sort of ending.

“They want these characters to live on in people’s minds and hearts, so it’s going to have to be written in a very special way.”

Seemingly the Big Bang Theory’s biggest fan, she will also release a behind-the-scenes book of over 2,000 polaroids taken by her since 2006.

She clearly wants to cling onto the hit show for as long as possible after the emotional season finale.
