But it has also been busy studying Jupiter’s moons, including capturing images of Io and Europa and capturing not only the sights but also the sounds of the moon Ganymede. Now Juno will get to see Europa in even more detail as it is set to perform a close flyby of the icy moon this week.

On Thursday, September 29, Juno will pass within 222 miles (358 kilometers) of Europa and should be able to capture some of the highest-ever resolution images of its surface, as well as gather data on its interior and the edge of its atmosphere. Europa is a particularly exciting place to study because it is thought to be one of the best places in the solar system for life to have evolved apart from Earth. It is getting its own mission called Europa Clipper to be launched in 2024.

Jupiter’s moon Europa.
This image of Jupiter’s moon Europa was taken by the JunoCam imager aboard NASA’s Juno spacecraft on Oct. 16, 2021, from a distance of about 51,000 miles (82,000 kilometers). Image data: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS. Image processing: Andrea Luck CC BY

“Europa is such an intriguing Jovian moon, it is the focus of its own future NASA mission,” said Juno Principal Investigator Scott Bolton of the Southwest Research Institute, in a statement. “We’re happy to provide data that may help the Europa Clipper team with mission planning, as well as provide new scientific insights into this icy world.”

Getting the spacecraft to pass so close to the moon while keeping it safe requires tremendous coordination. The maneuvers required to get close to Europa will change Juno’s orbit around Jupiter from a period of 43 days to 38 days. And the relative speeds are extremely fast, so the team will begin data collection one hour before the spacecraft’s closest approach to the moon.

“The relative velocity between spacecraft and moon will be 14.7 miles per second (23.6 kilometers per second), so we are screaming by pretty fast,” said John Bordi, Juno deputy mission manager at JPL. “All steps have to go like clockwork to successfully acquire our planned data, because soon after the flyby is complete, the spacecraft needs to be reoriented for our upcoming close approach of Jupiter, which happens only 7 ½ hours later.”

As it is so far from the sun, the surface of Europa is very cold and is covered in a thick layer of ice. But researchers believe there is a saltwater ocean beneath this crust, which could potentially support life. They know this because previous research has observed plumes of water being thrown up into the moon’s atmosphere. If we are very, very lucky, there is even a chance that Juno could catch such a plume to observe it in more detail.

“We have the right equipment to do the job, but to capture a plume will require a lot of luck,” said Bolton. “We have to be at the right place at just the right time, but if we are so fortunate, it’s a home run for sure.”

Celgene is buying cancer drugmaker Juno Therapeutics for $9 billion (CELG, JUNO) https://briefnews.eu/celgene-is-buying-cancer-drugmaker-juno-therapeutics-for-9-billion-celg-juno/ https://briefnews.eu/celgene-is-buying-cancer-drugmaker-juno-therapeutics-for-9-billion-celg-juno/#respond Mon, 22 Jan 2018 12:32:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/celgene-is-buying-cancer-drugmaker-juno-therapeutics-for-9-billion-celg-juno/ CAR-T blood cancer cell therapyAP

  • Celgene is acquiring Juno Therapeutics, a company developing personalized cancer treatments in a deal worth $ 9 billion.
  • It’s the second deal in 2018 for the biotech giant, which has been under pressure from investors.
  • The highly personalized treatments Juno makes, called CAR T-cell therapy, are at the beginning of what some are calling “a big new field of medicine.”

Celgene is buying Juno Therapeutics.

The biotech giant is acquiring the cancer drugmaker in a $ 9 billion deal, Celgene said on Monday. Celgene, which already owned 9.7% of Juno’s shares, will pay $ 87 per share in cash.

Juno is known for its experimental, highly personalized cancer treatments called CAR T-cell therapy (CAR is short for chimeric antigen receptor).

“The acquisition of Juno builds on our shared vision to discover and develop transformative medicines for patients with incurable blood cancers,” Celgene CEO Mark Alles said in a news release Monday. Celgene, which has been under pressure from investors to make some changes after a rocky 2017, has now made two acquisitions this month, after picking up Impact Biosciences in a $ 7 billion deal on January 7.

2017 was a big year for these CAR-T treatments: the Food and Drug Administration approved two treatments, one to treat treat pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia in people up to age 25 and another to treat aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. And in August, Gilead Sciences nabbed CAR-T drugmaker Kite Pharma in a $ 12 billion deal.

Juno’s farthest-along treatment, JCAR017, is expected to be approved in the US to treat another type of blood cancer  called diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in 2019. Celgene said the treatment has the potential to hit $ 3 billion in global sales.

How CAR-T cell therapy works

These treatments aren’t your run-of-the-mill pill — or even a biologic drug, like insulin — that can be mass produced. Since the therapy is made from a person’s own immune system, the process can take about three weeks.

  • To start, a doctor removes some white blood cells, the part of our body’s immune system responsible for combatting infections and foreign substances, from a patient. In a healthy body, the immune system can recognize abnormal, cancerous cells, but for people with cancer, it doesn’t recognize that the cells are spreading.
  • Then the cells are taken to a manufacturing facility at which point the cells are reengineered to recognize cancer cells and wipe them out.
  • Those reprogrammed cells are sent back and administered to the patient.

While the treatments don’t work in all patients, it can have dramatic results in those who do respond. For example, in a trial of 63 patients treated with Kymriah — the first cell therapy approved — 83% were in remission after three months, and 64% were still in remission after a year.

‘A big new field of medicine’

With two CAR-Ts already approved and more in the works over the next few years including Juno’s, the field of cell therapies is starting to emerge.

“We’re at the very beginning of what’s going to be a big new field of medicine,” David Epstein, who helped license Kymriah from the University of Pennsylvania while at Novartis, told Business Insider in August after Kymriah was approved.

Epstein left Novartis in 2016 as CEO of its pharmaceuticals divisions. He’s now the executive chairman of Rubius Therapeutics, a biotech firm that’s also working with cell therapy to develop treatments like the CAR-Ts that don’t have to be as personalized. The hope is that one day doctors will be able to prescribe a cell therapy and use it that same day instead of waiting weeks to get it back.

Epstein said he envisioned cell therapies having much shorter life cycles than traditional drugs. Instead of getting a better, updated therapy for a disease every decade or so, we might begin to see second-generation cell therapies in a few years.

One challenge these therapies still face is how toxic they can be. CAR-T’s side effects can be deadly. In May 2017, Kite disclosed that one person had died in a clinical trial for its late-stage CAR-T therapy from cerebral edema, a condition in which excessive fluid causes the brain to swell. Juno said five people in its clinical trials had died, all from cerebral edema.

Eventually, cell therapies could go beyond blood cancers, and include solid tumors and maybe even autoimmune diseases like Type 1 diabetes, Epstein said.

On Monday, the Juno spacecraft made its eighth close flyby of the planet Jupiter, and this time the spacecraft flew over the Great Red Spot that has captured the public’s attention since its discovery in the 17th century. Why is it so big? So red? And why has this storm lasted for centuries?

Juno reached perijove on Monday at 9:55pm ET, and at the time, the spacecraft was just 3,500km above the planet’s upper clouds. It was still flying near the surface of Jupiter, at an elevation of 9,000km, when it passed over the Great Red Spot 11 minutes later. “For generations, people from all over the world and all walks of life have marveled over the Great Red Spot,” said Scott Bolton, principal investigator of Juno from the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. “Now we are finally going to see what this storm looks like up close and personal.”

Scientists get as excited as anyone about seeing new pictures of the mysterious worlds that populate our vast Solar System—from Mercury’s day-and-night terminator to Pluto’s icy mountains. For far longer than most people, astronomers imagined what these diverse planets, dwarf planets, and moons must look like from up close.

It’s true that planetary scientists such as Fran Bagenal are more interested in data than anything else, and this often goes far beyond pixels. But as an astronomer who has been involved with many of NASA’s Solar System probes, from Voyager to New Horizons and Juno, Bagenal fully appreciates the value of images of capturing the public imagination.

NASA’s Juno mission discovers Jupiter is really weird https://briefnews.eu/nasas-juno-mission-discovers-jupiter-is-really-weird/ https://briefnews.eu/nasas-juno-mission-discovers-jupiter-is-really-weird/#respond Sat, 27 May 2017 10:55:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nasas-juno-mission-discovers-jupiter-is-really-weird/

NASA’s Juno mission to Jupiter has sent back a ton of data about our solar system’s largest planet. The results from the orbiter’s first big data-collection pass, which took place last August, are finally in and it’s clear that Juno’s five-year journey to the planet was worth the trip.

Juno is being kept in fairly wide orbit around Jupiter’s poles, but every 53 days as it switches between north and south, it swoops in to take a closer look at the rest of the giant planet along the way. The flyby takes just two hours, but the six megabytes of data collected during the ride can take 1.5 days to transmit from Juno back to Earth.

So far, we’ve learned that Jupiter’s poles are riddled with densely-packed storms, all of which are about the size of Earth. And Jupiter’s classic belts, those lateral stripes up and down the planet’s surface, aren’t really what researchers expected. Some of them seem to extend deep into the planet’s atmosphere while others appear to shift and change just at the surface.

The mission has also sent back data on Jupiter’s magnetic field, which we knew beforehand was the strongest in the solar system but thought to be much like our own compass-directing fields. But it’s even more intense than researchers thought and irregularly lumpy. In some places it’s 10 times stronger than the strongest magnetic fields of Earth. And, like our planet, Jupiter has northern and southern lights, but as of now, its auroras look to be quite different from our own.

“We knew, going in, that Jupiter would throw us some curves,” Scott Bolton, Juno principal investigator from the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, said in a press release, “But now that we are here we are finding that Jupiter can throw the heat, as well as knuckleballs and sliders. There is so much going on here that we didn’t expect that we have had to take a step back and begin to rethink of this as a whole new Jupiter.”

The findings from this first pass are being released this week in 46 papers published in Science and Geophysical Research Letters. And the next flyby is scheduled for July 11th when Juno will fly over the iconic Great Red Spot.
