After 13 years, the world junior hockey championship is back in British Columbia.

Co-hosts Vancouver and Victoria will split first round games as the tournament gets underway Wednesday in both cities.

Canada enters the tournament as favourites to repeat as gold medallists following last year’s victory in Buffalo, but faces strong squads from the United States and Finland, as well as traditional rivals Russia and Sweden.

It concludes Jan. 5 with the gold-medal game at Vancouver's Rogers Arena. Before then, here are some of the players to watch from each of the 10 participating countries.

Canada

Cody Glass – C – Drafted 6th overall in 2017 by Vegas Golden Knights

  • Expected to be Canada's first-line centre, Glass has exploded offensively for his WHL team this season, recording 54 points in just 26 games with the Portland Winterhawks.

Alexis Lafrenière – LW – 2020 draft eligible

  • A potential phenom in the making, Lafrenière will be the first 17-year-old to play for Team Canada since Connor McDavid. He's scored an absurd 54 points in just 31 games for his junior team in Rimouski of the QMJHL and has the ability to emerge as one of the stars of the tournament.

Czech Republic

Filip Zadina – LW/RW – Drafted 6th overall in 2018 by Detroit Red Wings

  • Zadina hit the net seven times in as many games at last year's world juniors and will be among the most talented goal-scorers in B.C.

Martin Necas – C/RW – Drafted 12th overall in 2017 by Carolina Hurricanes

  • Necas was the co-leading scorer of the 2018 world juniors with 11 points in seven games and is known for using his skating and stickhandling to create opportunities.

Denmark

Mads Sogaard – G – 2019 draft eligible

  • The Danish goalie has had a strong final few weeks of 2018 for the Medicine Hat Tigers, awarded the WHL's goalie of the week honour on Dec. 17. A strong run of play has made him a possible selection at next summer's NHL draft.

Finland

Holiday tradition: B.C. ready for world junior hockey championship https://briefnews.eu/holiday-tradition-b-c-ready-for-world-junior-hockey-championship/ https://briefnews.eu/holiday-tradition-b-c-ready-for-world-junior-hockey-championship/#respond Tue, 25 Dec 2018 18:54:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/holiday-tradition-b-c-ready-for-world-junior-hockey-championship/

Officially, it's the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, but in Canada it's known simply as the world juniors.

The annual holiday tournament of the top teenaged male hockey players has grown from a niche event hosted in boutique European towns, to a cult classic of a sporting spectacle that in Canada at least, rivals major pro sports in audience and attention.

This year, the tournament returns to British Columbia for the first time since 2005/06, with games split between Vancouver and Victoria, starting on Boxing Day Wednesday and concluding Jan. 5 with the bronze and gold-medal games.

Here's what you need to know about this year's world juniors:

Who's playing?

Ten teams are drawn into two pools for the opening round. Pool A is based in Vancouver, with games at Rogers Arena. Pool B is based in Victoria, with games at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

POOL A

  • Canada
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Russia
  • Switzerland

POOL B

  • Finland
  • Kazakhstan
  • Slovakia
  • Sweden
  • United States

The top four teams in each pool qualify for the quarter-finals on Jan. 2 in Victoria and Vancouver. The winners advance to the Jan. 4 semifinals in Vancouver, with the bronze and gold-medal games the following day.

When does Canada play?

Canada begins its schedule Wednesday (Boxing Day) against Denmark. The team's opening-round schedule grows increasingly tougher, ramping up to the New Year's Eve clash against Russia. All games start at 8 p.m. ET.

  • vs. Denmark — Dec. 26
  • vs. Switzerland — Dec. 27
  • vs. Czech Republic — Dec. 29
  • vs. Russia  — Dec. 31

Who are the notable players?

The top teams at the tournament are brimming with talent and the stage is always set for unknowns to emerge.

Jack Hughes — United States

  • The likely first overall selection in next summer's NHL draft, Hughes is expected to be among the stars of the tournament. The 17-year-old is a dynamic skater and puck-handler. He'll anchor a strong American team alongside older brother Quinn, an attacking defenceman selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the first round of last year's draft. Jack is ranked as the top undrafted player by NHL Central Scouting.

American Jack Hughes is expected to be a top pick in the next NHL draft and among the top players at the 2019 World Juniors. (Carlos Osorio / The Associated Press)

Kaapo Kakko — Finland

  • Kakko is likely the most hyped prospect of the tournament after Hughes. Currently playing in Finland's top league against men, Kakko, 17, has the combination of size and puck-handling to dominate games.

Adam Boqvist — Sweden

  • Boqvist, 18, is an aggressive offensive defenceman who looks to lead the charge from the back. A first-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, he's known for his speed and willingness to carry the puck in an effort to model his game after his idol, San Jose Sharks blue-liner Erik Karlsson.

Cody Glass — Canada

  • The Vegas Golden Knights' first-ever draft pick lit up the scoreboard with his junior team last season, scoring 37 goals and 102 points in 64 games for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League. Glass, 19, is a fast-skating, physical centre who'll be counted on for leadership as a top-six forward on Team Canada.

Centre Cody Glass, left, was cut from the Canadian team a year ago, but is expected to play a key offensive role on this year's squad. (Aaron Lynett / The Canadian Press)

What are the marquee 1st-round matchups?

U.S. vs. Slovakia — Dec. 26 in Victoria

  • The second game of the tournament and first in the B.C. capital. It'll be the first glimpse at the Americans, led by the Hughes brothers, in a matchup against a Slovakian team that nearly upset last year's silver medallists from Sweden.

Canada vs. Czech Republic — Dec. 29 in Vancouver

  • This will be Canada's third game of the tournament and likely toughest to that point after opening against Denmark and Switzerland. The Czechs are a step below the elite tier of teams at the tournament but boast a strong core of skilled offensive players, including NHL first-rounders Filip Zadina (Detroit) and Martin Necas (Carolina) that will test the Canadian defence.

Czech Republic forward Filip Zadina scored seven goals in as many games at last year's world junior tournament. (Jeffrey T. Barnes/Associated Press/File)

Canada vs. Russia — Dec. 31 in Vancouver

  • The traditional rivals and gold-medal contenders meet in the final game of pool play on what is traditionally the biggest night of the opening round. The winner of what is typically an emotional contest will earn an easier quarter-final matchup and big boost of momentum entering the elimination round.

Finland vs. United States — Dec. 31 in Victoria

  • The Hughes' vs. Kakko and company in a meeting featuring some of the tournament's highest-profile players and two favoured teams in Pool B.

Hockey Canada announces World Junior selection camp roster https://briefnews.eu/hockey-canada-announces-world-junior-selection-camp-roster/ https://briefnews.eu/hockey-canada-announces-world-junior-selection-camp-roster/#respond Mon, 03 Dec 2018 20:54:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hockey-canada-announces-world-junior-selection-camp-roster/

Canada will have just two players returning to defend its gold medal from the 2018 world junior hockey championship.

Forwards Alex Formenton and Maxime Comtois, both 19, are among the 34 players chosen by Hockey Canada that will attend selection camp ahead of the 2019 world junior championship that begins on Boxing Day.

The majority of Hockey Canada's selections come from the Canadian Hockey League, with 29 of the 34 named to camp currently playing in either the OHL, QMJHL or Western Hockey League.

Defencemen Ian Mitchell (Denver), Jacob Bernard-Docker (North Dakota) and Cameron Crotty (Boston University) and forward Shane Bowers (Boston University) are the lone Canadians playing outside the CHL to make the cut.

The Canadian squad will also have forward Gabe Vilardi joining them at camp. His status was unknown after starting the year on the injured list with the L.A. Kings, but he has recovered and is currently on a conditioning assignment in the American Hockey League.

The battle in net will be between Michael DiPietro, Ian Scott and Matthew Villalta.

Forward Alexis Lafreniere is the youngest player invited at only 17. He isn't eligible for the NHL draft until 2020.

Forwards Robert Thomas and Michael Rasmussen were hopefuls for the squad but haven't been released by their NHL clubs. They still could, though it appears highly unlikely.

Selection camp, which was announced in Calgary, will take place from Dec. 10 to Dec. 14 in Victoria and will be followed by three exhibition games against a group of U Sports all-stars.

The Canadian team hits the ice on Dec. 26 for its world junior opener against Denmark in a Group A matchup at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. All Group B games will take place at Victoria's Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

Selection Camp Roster

Goaltenders: Michael DiPietro, Ian Scott, Matthew Villalta

Defencemen: Calen Addison, Nicolas Beaudin, Jacob Bernard-Docker, Evan Bouchard, Josh Brook, Cameron Crotty, Noah Dobson, Pierre-Olivier Jospeh, Jared McIsaac, Ian Mitchell, Markus Phillips, Ty Smith

Death toll rises to 15 in Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team bus crash https://briefnews.eu/death-toll-rises-to-15-in-humboldt-broncos-junior-hockey-team-bus-crash/ https://briefnews.eu/death-toll-rises-to-15-in-humboldt-broncos-junior-hockey-team-bus-crash/#respond Sat, 07 Apr 2018 21:56:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/death-toll-rises-to-15-in-humboldt-broncos-junior-hockey-team-bus-crash/ The death toll from a horrific crash involving a Saskatchewan junior hockey team bus has risen to 15.

The RCMP said a 15th person died Saturday, after 14 fatalities were announced overnight. Another 14 people were injured — some critically — in the collision near Tisdale, Sask.

The president of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team fought back tears Saturday as he described being “heartbroken and completely devastated” by the crash.

Head coach Darcy Haugan was one of the victims who died when the bus collided with a semi-trailer.

Tyler Bieber, who worked with Humboldt radio station 107.5 Bolt FM, is also confirmed dead.

Broncos team captain Logan Schatz, 20, and players Adam Herold, 16, and Jaxon Joseph, 20, were among those killed in the crash.

A close family friend said Matthieu Gomercic, from Winnipeg, survived the crash with “minor injuries.”

Derek Patter, Greyson Cameron and Nick Shumlanski also were among the injured.

“These young men have had a significant impact, on our homes, on our families, on our children,” said Humboldt Broncos president Kevin Garinger at a news conference attended by about 200 people in Humboldt, Sask., on Saturday afternoon.

Humboldt Mayor Rob Muench was also emotional as he spoke of the widespread impact the crash has had, adding that he had spoken to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier in the day.

“This tragedy has hit a number of people, not just us but I think everybody can relate to this experience,” said Muench.

“Throughout Canada we see teams going out into the Canadian winters on buses all the time and it’s always a thought in parents and fans minds about what can happen and unfortunately has happened here.”

Police say there were 29 people on the bus at the time of the crash, including the driver.

Garinger said all families of the deceased have been notified.

Speaking at the news conference on Saturday, RCMP Saskatchewan Assistant Commissioner Curtis Zablocki revealed new details about the crash and the investigation.

He said the male driver of the semi-trailer was not injured and, although he was detained temporarily after the collision, he has now been released.

Zablocki said it was too early to comment on the cause of the collision but he confirmed the semi-trailer was travelling westbound on Highway 335 when it collided with the bus travelling northbound on Highway 35.

“This is a very involved investigation and, due to the large amount of evidence, information, and the number of victims, this work will take some time,” said Zablocki.

Bill Chow, the president of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, had to pause as he was overwhelmed with emotion at Saturday’s news conference.

“The worst nightmare has happened. As a league, we will support the Humboldt Broncos in every way possible,” he said.

A GoFundMe page raising money for families affected by the crash had raised $ 1 million of its $ 2 million goal by 2 p.m. Saturday, 18 hours after it was created.

Tom Straschnitzki, the father of Ryan Straschnitzki, one of the players injured in the crash, said his son suffered a severe back injury.

“He’s alive and breathing, and from what we know he has a broken back, and as of now, can’t feel anything from his waist down.”

“I think he’s still in shock, still asking how everyone is and who perished and who didn’t.”

Broncos team member Ryan Straschnitzki suffered a severe back injury in the crash, according to his father Tom.(Submitted by Straschnitzki family)

“He remembers he was in the middle of the bus and then he remembers waking up when the paramedics took him off the bus … and he said, ‘I thought the semi T-boned right in the middle,’ but he said, ‘no, it was in the front of the bus.'”

Tom and his wife will be leaving Airdrie, Alta., today to see their son.

Horror crash

The Nipawin Hawks of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League say the crash involved the team bus of the Humboldt Broncos, who were on their way to Nipawin for Game 5 of its SJHL semifinal series. The crash happened about 30 kilometres north of Tisdale, Sask.

The Hawks had been scheduled to play the Broncos on Friday night, but said on Facebook shortly after 6 p.m. CST that the game was cancelled because of the crash.

“Our community is in utter shock and we are trying our best to comes to grips with this unimaginable tragedy,” Broncos president Kevin Garinger said on Saturday morning.

Like others in the small community of nearly 6,000, he said he knew each of the young men and staff on the team personally, and had been billeting one of the players at his home.

We are just in utter disbelief and shock at the loss that’s fallen upon us.– Broncos president Kevin  Garinger

“This is much larger than anyone can begin to imagine.”

Garinger had been in Edmonton visiting a nephew in the hospital, when he got a call from a fan, asking about reports of the crash. Once he started making phone calls, he learned of the extent of the collision.

“We are just in utter disbelief and shock at the loss that’s fallen upon us.”

He said the entire Broncos organization wanted to share their “deepest thoughts and prayers” to those most impacted by the crash, as well as their thanks to the emergency personnel who responded to the crash.

Humboldt’s Elgar Petersen Arena was turned into a mobile crisis unit, as people gathered to support one another. Some made phone calls as they attempted to learn more about the status of their loved ones.

The father of one of the injured players posted this photo on Twitter. From the left are Derek Patter, Greyson Cameron and Nick Shumlanski. (Twitter/rjpatter)

Daigon Elny was a member of the team last year, and was one of the people at the arena.

“We were a family,” he said. “You come to the rink… what’s better than that?

“Now I don’t know what goes on now.”

Premier, prime minister offer condolences

“Words can not describe the loss that we feel tonight,” wrote Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe in a Facebook post. “To the City of Humboldt, the entire Broncos organization, and the families impacted by this tragedy, please know you are in Saskatchewan’s hearts.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences as well, writing on Twitter, “I cannot imagine what these parents are going through, and my heart goes out to everyone affected by this terrible tragedy, in the Humboldt community and beyond.”Aerial footage shows aftermath of deadly crash between truck and junior hockey team bus0:58

U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter that he had spoken to Trudeau to “pay my highest respect and condolences to the families of the terrible Humboldt Team tragedy. May God be with them all!”

The collision took place Friday evening on Highway 35, about 30 kilometres north of Tisdale, Sask., near the junction of Highway 335, when a semi-trailer collided with the bus, the RCMP said.

STARS air ambulance says it sent two helicopters to the scene.

A few family members contacted by CBC News said they were waiting to hear more concrete details about their loved ones on the team.

The team includes 24 players, all from Western Canada, ranging in age from 16 to 21.

Traffic on the highway will be blocked or restricted for several hours and drivers can expect lengthy delays. Drivers are asked to avoid the area, if possible.

‘It’s going to hit the community hard’

Humboldt Mayor Rob Muench said he first heard about the crash on social media.

“It was horrifying,” he said, noting there are a few “local kids” on the team.

“It’s going to hit the community hard.”

A team bus carrying fans was also headed to Nipawin for the game.

The Nipawin Apostolic Church, located at 109 Fourth Avenue East, is serving as a gathering place for families, and more information will be shared there, according to the RCMP. Emergency services and Victim Services representatives will also be on site.

The community was coming out to help, with local grocery stores bringing food, while others brought phone chargers and help to connect families with relatives. Those who had heard news about their loved ones quickly left to go to nearby hospitals, while others were still waiting to hear news, he said.

Parents and family of individuals seeking information about their family members who may have been in the collision can call 306-752-8700.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority issued a statement Saturday commending medical workers for their response to the crash.

“They, along with other emergency services including police, fire departments and STARS, came together as one single team to provide care and comfort to those affected by this terrible event,” said chief executive officer Scott Livingstone.

The health authority said it has sent counsellors to various affected sites to provide support.Fourteen are confirmed dead after a collision involving a junior hockey team’s bus in Saskatchewan0:34

This is the second time a Saskatchewan team with the name “Broncos” has been involved in a highway crash.
