Nigel Farage was snubbed by Jean-Claude Juncker today at the State of the Union address. The former Ukip leader attempted to give Juncker a pair of Union flag socks. However, a body language expert has told Express.co.uk how the European Union leader ends up “squashing Farage” in the exchange. Judi James said: “While the country self-implodes over the life-changing implications of our Brexit negotiations it’s clear from this body language vignette between Nigel Farage and Jean-Claude Juncker that some of the key players are more concerned with acts of bonhomie and non-verbal banter.” The two men attempt to put one another down in power play hidden behind friendly exchanges. Judi said: “This relationship snapshot of Farage and Juncker reveals a whole raft of put-down signals masquerading as playful rituals of relaxed friendship, with Juncker ending the gag by squashing Farage more comprehensively than Trump did when he announced him on stage without knowing where he was arriving from. “Gift-giving rituals do vary around the world but Juncker clearly saw a wind-up coming when Farage arrived with the small green box.” During this apparently jovial handshake “Juncker applies a thumb clamp to control the ritual and points with his right hand in a gesture associated with weapons and attack.” Judi said: “His mouth is wide open though and his eyebrows are raised, suggesting a humour-based approach.” However, Nigel hits back with his own finger point. Judi said: “The pointing finger is such a potent weapon signal that Farage draws his own weapon in knee-jerk response, returning the stabbing pointed finger with the hand that is holding the gift, bending as he shakes though, in an act that is now looking like submissive obedience. “The ‘fight’ continues as Juncker slaps Farage on the shoulder near the neck to dismiss him and he adds a top ‘licking’ hand gesture to the shake to register Farage has had his joke now and should go.” The final act comes as the EU leader is left alone with the “gift”. Judi said: “Any gift needs to be kept near the receiver but Juncker continues his put-down of Farage by handing the box away without opening it or owning it.” Donald Trump and Jean Claude Juncker’s body language was also analysed by Judi. The EU leader and the president sat in the Oval Office of the White House in July. Juncker said the US and EU were “not enemies” as he began talks with President Trump aimed at defusing the trade tensions between the two key economies. Donald Trump discussed Brexit with UK Prime Minister Theresa May during his trip to the UK. Former advisor to the President Steve Bannon said Donald “gave (Theresa May) some pointers and pulled her off to the side and said: ‘Hey, if I was doing this here is how tough you have got to be because these guys are not going to let you go.’”

Top Brussels official Jean-Claude Juncker, known for his somewhat eccentric behavior, has given Donald Trump an unusual gift – a photo of a cemetery. But it’s not an ominous threat.
The European Commission President visited Washington this Wednesday in an effort to avoid a trade war that has been brewing since the start of the summer.
Speaking on the results of the meeting with Trump, Juncker explained the symbolism of his gift, a photo of a military cemetery in Luxembourg, to the US president. The present wasn’t meant to be sinister, but was aimed at reminding Trump, who had repeatedly locked horns with EU officials, that Europe and the US share a common history, Juncker said.
The Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial has the remains of over 5,000 US servicemen, including a grave of renowned General George Patton who led the US army during the Allied invasion of Normandy back in 1944.

“Dear Donald, let us remember our common history,” a message written on the photo said, according to Juncker. “And we should do that even in more difficult times,” he stressed hinting at the strained relations between Washington and its transatlantic allies.
“At a time when tensions might feel strained, it is more important than ever for young people on both sides of the Atlantic to learn about the power of our past,” Luxembourg-born Juncker continued, saying that after the devastation of WWII “our parents and grandparents” vowed “Never again.”

It’s not clear how Trump, who is not exactly known for his subtlety, reacted to the cemetery photo gift. The US and the EU have been at loggerheads over trade after Trump announced tariffs on steel and aluminum, provoking a response from Brussels. US goods that have been impacted by the response from America’s traditional allies include Bourbon whiskey, orange juice and Harley Davidson motorcycles.
During the Wednesday meeting Juncker confirmed that the EU will build more terminals in order to import liquid natural gas (LNG) from the US, while Trump announced that the EU will be buying “a lot more” soybeans from the US, and that Brussels and Washington will work to eliminate tariffs, barriers and subsidies on “non-auto industrial goods.”

EU leader Jean Claude Juncker showed the ultimate display of power today, according to a body language expert who an analysed the behaviour of European leaders at the European Union Council summit in Brussels.
The 63-year-old Luxembourgish politician has been in the role since November 2014, and was previously the Prime Minister of Luxembourg.
The European Commission President had prime ministers kneeling at his feet as he spoke to them at the roundtable meeting between the EU’s leaders.
A body language expert has analysed the footage exclusively for Express.co.uk.
“It was ‘An audience with…’ time at the EU summit as leader Jean Claude Juncker appeared to hold court, sitting splayed and slumped in his seat, while various other world leaders came to bend the knee in what looked like an over-congruent act of obeisance,” Judi James said.
“When Macron refused to both shake hands with the EU leader earlier while he stood and Juncker remained in his seat it did look mightily like a snub from the French president,” Judi said.
“But one glance at the body language alternative shown by Mark Rutte and Charles Michel suggests Macron’s was a smart move to avoid the status-crushing experience of stooping right to the floor to be tucked beneath Juncker’s armpit while he jabs his index finger in a stabbing gesture like the man who is calling all of the shots.”
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel sat with Mr Juncker’s arm draped over him as the pair spoke on Friday morning.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was then seen kneeling at the feet of Mr Juncker as the Commission remains in his seat.
Jean Claude Juncker took stayed in his seat throughout these interactions, in a way Judi suggests is similar to a patriarch.
She said: “The overall effect is to suggest that Juncker is commanding shows of obedience from other EU leaders and making them perform submissive rituals as they do so.
“The best you could describe it as is paternal although it is an unusual ritual to do to high-ranking adults.”
Juncker, who is the man charged with negotiating a new deal with Britain after Brexit, recently claimed Britain would be better off if he was prime minister.
Mr Juncker said Theresa May had not briefed him on the Chequers meeting of her Brexit negotiations “war cabinet” when ministers agreed a broad policy for the next stage of negotiations, on trade.
He then quipped: “I am not the British prime minister. It would be good for Britain if I was, but I’m not.”
Judi added: “Juncker raised his hand with the palm held towards himself to appear to conduct and choreograph the action, performing some sharp nods to get his views across. At one point two people rise from their kneeling only to be motioned back onto the floor again, popping up then back down again in unison.
“Sitting and making others kneel like this is the ultimate power-posture in many ways unless the person sitting is unable to get out of their chair. Bending the knee is an ancient act of submission and obedience, with the kneeler performing an act of inconvenience to perform it.”
British Prime Minister Theresa May and Jean Claude Juncker met today to talk Brexit and forge a deal between the UK and the EU.
Mrs May, 61, met with Mr Juncker, 62, in Brussels to seal the terms of Briton’s divorce from the EU.
Brexiteer Nigel Farage has slammed the Prime Minister when it comes to Theresa May’s Brexit deal, calling her actions a betrayal.
A leaked draft has appeared to show that Theresa May’s Northern Ireland Brexit deal may include no divergence of the single market and customs union rules on the island of Ireland – including the Northern Irish territory.
So, what does Theresa May and Jean Claude Junker’s body language show at today’s historic talks? A body language expert gave her professional opinion.
According to body language expert Judi James, Juncker has been especially cold towards the British Prime Minister, potentially not a good sign for the Brexit negotiations going forwards.
Judi said: “There’s a contagious awkwardness about these poses, especially from Juncker who is normally a fan of the warmest and most tactile of greetings, no matter who he’s meeting.
“He’s created an exaggerated spatial gap from May, as though he’d be happier keeping her at arm’s length.”
There are no signs of friendliness from the President of the European Commission, Judi explained, adding: “Even when the pair use eye contact there seems to be no attempt at closeness from Juncker, who only reverts to his signature style as they go to walk off, when he places an arm around May’s back.
“This would normally signal a parental-type of warmth but his hand is normally around shoulder height. Holding it lower here makes the gesture look more like a steer, hurry or even shove.”
Juncker means business, according to the body language expert, shown by his dominant display in his feet.
Judi said: “It is Juncker’s foot splay that suggests he still means business though.
“His foot stance hints he could still be holding firm despite the diminished power signals from the rest of his pose.”
However, Mrs May is fighting back. Judi said: “Interestingly May’s foot splay matches his evenly, showing mirrored confidence and resolve.”
Mrs May is the one making all the effort to be friendly in this exchange, the expert claims.
Judi said: “It is May working this pose to appear friendly but also dominant here.
“Given the gap between their bodies she has pulled Juncker’s hand towards her own torso in the shake in a gesture that shows she’s leading the choreography, and her fingers look as though she has his hand in a tight grasp.
“Juncker’s newly-fastidious distance-greeting combined with May’s determination to take control suggest this should make for an interesting meeting.”
Theresa May’s body language can reveal much to the British press about how the PM might be feeling during these Brexit negotiations.
Judi also gave her analysis on Mrs May as she arrived at the EU Summit on November 17.
European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker has invited the leaders of four Eastern European countries to dinner, Reuters reported, citing a letter sent to them. In an effort to ease tensions between these countries and wealthier western member states, Juncker wrote on October 2 to the leaders of Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Juncker stressed the “paramount importance” of EU unity, strained by disputes over immigration and other issues as well as by Brexit, according to the report.
Europe will come up with an “adequate” response and “within days” if the newly-signed US anti-Russian sanctions law hurts the interests of European companies working with Russia, European Commission Head Jean-Claude Juncker has warned.
European interests should be always taken into account when it comes to enabling new US sanctions, Juncker said in an interview to the German ARD-Europastudio Brussel.
“We must defend our economic interests even against the US. And that is what we are going to do,” Juncker said.
“We are ready,” he added, pointing out that EU reserves the right to take retaliatory measures in case its interests are violated. He also drew attention to the fact that the newly-signed US law can have “unpredictable” consequences for the EU in the field of energy security.
The new US sanctions can affect EU efforts to diversify its energy supply, particularly in the Baltic region, the European Commission head warned.
Nevertheless, he expressed hope that the US would still take Europe’s interests into account by saying “the US Congress stated that these sanctions should be imposed only in consultation with the US allies” and he “assumes” that the EU “is still a US ally.”
Juncker recalled his own statements made during the G-7 meeting in Italy and G-20 meeting in Germany that the EU would be ready to respond within a short period of time in case the US imposes new unilateral sanctions against Russia.
Pointedly though, he reaffirmed the EU commitment to the policy of sanctions against Russia and said that unity and close cooperation in the field of such policy between the G7 countries is necessary to facilitate the full implementation of the Minsk Agreements, which stipulate principles for a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian crisis.

Prime Minister Theresa May was reportedly urged to call last week’s general election by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in order to strengthen her hand ahead of Brexit talks. The plan spectacularly backfired.
Juncker is said to have advised May to call an election because her then 17-seat parliamentary majority was not seen as strong enough to guarantee a strong negotiating position. A larger majority, he allegedly told May, would help her dictate the terms of the divorce bill.
The Tories now have no majority.
“During bilaterals, in the margins of summits, Juncker repeatedly told her he thought she should [call a snap election],” an anonymous EU diplomat told the Guardian.
“People don’t understand. We want a deal more than anyone. We are professionals, we have a mandate to get a deal and we want to be successful in that,” another EU source told the paper.
When announcing she would be dissolving government, May argued new elections were needed to stop the UK opposition’s “political game playing.”
“If we do not hold a general election now, their political game playing will continue as the negotiations with the European Union will reach their most pivotal stage in the run up to the next general election,” the PM told reporters outside 10 Downing Street on April 10.
“Division in Westminster will risk our ability to make a success of Brexit, and it will cause damaging uncertainty and instability to the country. So we need a general election and we need one now.”
But after last Thursday’s election, May’s Conservative Party has been left nine seats short of a majority.
The now infamous last encounter between Juncker and May at Downing Street ended up being leaked to the German press, with the European Commission president saying the British PM “lived in another galaxy” and did not understand what she was dealing with.
He also made several digs at Britain following the meeting, including the suggestion that the English language was “losing importance.”
