Clarice Starling is no stranger to danger, but after Thursday’s episode, she might think twice the next time she decides to fly solo. (Eh, who are we kidding?)

After a search for Marilyn Felker (a.k.a., the leader of the clinical trial that the murdered women participated in) led Clarice to sister Luanne Felker’s medical facility, Starling found herself pumped full of psychotic drugs and chained to a hospital bed by none other than Marilyn, herself. Not being able to tell reality from psychosis, Starling’s trauma and PTSD ran rampant in her brain as she struggled to figure out how to escape the newfound horror show she found herself in. And while she wasn’t actually trapped in Buffalo Bill’s pit of despair, she might as well have been, seeing as she was once again in a fight for her life at the hand of a mad(wo)man.

Below, TVLine speaks with series lead Rebecca Breeds about Clarice’s traumatic past, the torture she endured during her imprisonment and how the Aussie actress learned to speak that tricky Appalachian dialect.

TVLINE | Clarice goes through absolute hell in Episode 5. Even though you’re mostly bed-ridden throughout, was this episode difficult to shoot?
REBECCA BREEDS |
This episode nearly killed me. [Laughs] It was so intense because even the times when I’m just lying in bed, the psychological trauma she’s going through is extreme. And then there’s all the pulling myself around on the floor in a drug stupor, paralyzed from the waist down… it was a very intense episode physically, emotionally, everything. It took so much of me and it was just so rewarding at the end of the day. You start the day off with these pages going, “How the hell are we going to do this? How am I going to act that and do that truthfully?” So much of it was stuff I’d never experienced. Line by line, moment by moment, I just threw myself into it with complete abandon. Every single part of this episode to me was like jumping off a cliff, like “I don’t know how to do this, but let’s go!”

As an actress, I went to places I couldn’t have conjured with my rational intellect. It was very much an instinctive experience and at the end of every day, I went home completely spent but so satisfied, like “Whoa, I did that today and I think it came out really good, and I’m really proud of that.” It was a huge learning experience for me.

Clarice Season 1 Episode 5 TVLINE | We see a lot of Clarice’s trauma manifest itself through the dreams and visions she has. I’m curious: Is it her trauma that drives her or is she simply running away from it?
BREEDS | Such a good question! It’s a really great thing to ask because we’re at a point in the show where she doesn’t know yet. I think that’s one of the reasons why she avoids dealing with her trauma because what if it is the thing that’s driving her? What if it is the thing that makes her good at her job? It’s like a really good musician. Once you find the love of your life and there’s no drama anymore, are you still going to be able to write a good song? If you feel like greatest hits are all break-up songs, what happens?

I think that’s part of her resistance to looking this stuff in the face. Will she completely fall apart? Maybe. Will she lose some of her drive or her efficacy as an agent? Is she going to be a better agent than ever? They’re all very real things she doesn’t know the answer to, and there could be some sacrifice there once she heals and deals with the trauma and puts it aside. What’s it going to take for her to finally say that maybe my well-being is more important than my job? I think we’re at a point where we’re pushing to a boiling point, where she might start to think that, but she’s not there yet.

TVLINE | Why is it that Clarice always seems to work by herself, despite all of the danger she gets herself into? What is it about her past or her makeup that makes her a bit of a loner?
BREEDS | I think she’s a martyr, for sure. She would rather put herself in danger than endanger others — because the whole point is to rescue people, to silence the lambs, not to put more people in harm’s way — and I don’t think she has a high self-value. She’s like, “Well, if I die, I die… I don’t want to put Ardelia or Esquivel in danger,” or “This could be nothing, I’m just following a hunch.” I don’t think she necessarily anticipates things to go as dark as they do. A lot of the times she’s just using her initiative and chasing a lead. I do that in my life often. I’m like, “Hey, I’ll just do it and show them how clever I am!” [Laughs]

[Clarice is thinking], “There are important stakes here, we have to save these people, more people could be getting killed, let’s just get on with it!” I think on an even deeper level, subconsciously, her dad worked alone as a nightwatchman. He got out there and did the job. He’s her hero and she wants to emulate him. He looked darkness in the face every night and he got on with his job, and she likes to think that she can do the same.

TVLINE | I really liked the final scene in this episode between Clarice and Ardelia. Are the two friends going to be able to patch things up?
BREEDS | I think beyond patching it up, they’re perhaps in a state of evolution. I think they’re going to have real chats… it’s real talk time! They’re going on this journey together and I think with their sense of family and friendship, they are committed to having the hard talks and eating the humble pie. They’re committed to learning and growing together, and when you do that your love only grows deeper. We get to witness that evolution, that journey, which is nice, but hard. It hurts, but it’s for the greater good, I think.

TVLINE | Lastly, you absolutely nail the West Virginian accent. How difficult was it to get that down?
BREEDS | Actually, the broad strokes of it came so quickly. I listened to a couple Appalachian accents on YouTube, and then I tried them and they just sat so well in my mouth, I don’t know why. There were a few exercises like “I might fly my kite” and “I thought I caught that dog,” and a couple of mouth positions. It happened in a couple of hours. From there, it was just a matter of gentle finessing, so I worked with a coach and he helped me with pronunciations and bits and pieces. Then, I just applied it to the work, and it really brought the character home for me. Getting the accent was a game changer.

A desperate young man was filmed jumping from the third story of a blazing shopping mall in Russia’s Kemerovo after smoke forced him to hang out of a window. A crowd of people can be seen on the ground attempting to catch him.

It was not immediately clear whether the jumper survived the ordeal, but Russia’s Investigative Committee said three women, one man and a child were presumed dead in the fire.

A video obtained by RT’s video agency Ruptly showed a crowd of people seemingly preparing to catch a person hanging from a third floor window as black smoke billows from it. People scream in terror as the young man jumps. He can be seen hitting the canopy on the ground floor before landing amidst the crowd. The video then shows an ambulance driving toward a person on the ground, whose ultimate fate is unclear.

The massive fire erupted in the Kemerovo shopping mall on Sunday afternoon. Emergency services rescued over a hundred people and continue to work at the site.

Jumping Ship https://briefnews.eu/jumping-ship/ https://briefnews.eu/jumping-ship/#respond Thu, 18 Jan 2018 01:03:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jumping-ship/

Senate Republicans are tossing aside a bipartisan deal to protect DREAMers and are going back to the drawing board, despite a threat by Democrats to shut down the government within days without one.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday Congress would be “just spinning our wheels” if it voted on an immigration deal reached by a bipartisan group of senators without assurances from President Donald Trump that he will sign it.

Democrats are vowing to withhold support for a bill to prevent a government shutdown Saturday unless a deal to revive former president Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, is included. Republicans overwhelmingly say there is no chance for a deal to get done by this week. And talks are restarting from scratch regardless. The party whips in the House and the Senate have formed a new negotiating group and have started meeting, while McConnell said he is waiting on direction from the White House.

“I’m looking for something that President Trump supports and he’s not yet indicated what measure he’s willing to sign. As soon as we figure out what he is for then I would be convinced that we were not just spinning our wheels going to this issue on the floor,” said McConnell.

McConnell’s deference to the White House comes after Trump has already said he would defer to Congress, telling lawmakers they would come up with a DACA solution “and I’m going to sign that solution.” Trump’s chief of staff also said Thursday after meetings with members of both parties on Capitol Hill that Congress would take the lead.

Adding to the confusion over the president’s priorities, Kelly told the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Wednesday morning that Trump’s campaign promise to build a wall along the entire length of the US-Mexico border was uninformed, two members who were at the meeting said. According to CHC cochair Rep. Ruben Gallego, Kelly said the Trump administration is no longer pursuing that promise.

“[Kelly] specifically said that there’s some areas of the border that don’t need a wall and the president didn’t know that when he was making his campaign promises,” Gallego said.

That leaves Congress set up for a major showdown in just two days. Even with the midnight deadline on Friday to keep the government open, Democrats are holding to their vow not to support a spending deal without DACA protections. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer insisted Democrats have the upper hand because Republicans control both chambers of Congress and the White House, saying a shutdown would be seen as their responsibility.

“We want to do everything we can to avoid a shutdown, but we Democrats believe that if there is one, it’ll fall on the Republicans’ backs, plain and simple,” said Schumer.

The decision by Senate Republicans to abandon the so-called gang of six DACA deal comes the same day that it was set to be officially introduced by its principal negotiators, Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin and South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. The bill would grant a path to citizenship to 690,000 DREAMers — undocumented people who entered the country as children. Trump announced in September he would cancel the program and it expires on March 5. The Graham-Durbin deal would also provide funding for border security and allow parents of DREAMers to stay and work in the country on a temporary basis.

The bill has already drawn opposition from some Republicans in the House and Senate. In the House, the far-right Freedom Caucus remains opposed to any deal that will give DREAMers a path to citizenship.

Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas said Tuesday he supports a path to citizenship, but he opposes the deal because it does not sufficiently fund border security. He also noted that the bill doesn’t address another major priority for the Trump administration: ending chain migration, the process of immigrants becoming citizens and then sponsoring family members.

Others cited similar reasons for not getting behind the bill or, like McConnell, pointed to Trump’s lack of support. “Hopefully Senator Durbin and others realize that the gang of six bill is not the path forward,” said Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn.

Emerging from a conference meeting of Republican senators Wednesday, Sen. Roger Wicker said, “Just listening in lunch I see no way that anything’s going to happen this week but a potential CR,” or short-term spending bill to keep the government open.

Republicans are currently working on a short-term funding bill that would keep the government afloat into mid-February, but it will need the support of nine Democrats to pass the Senate. Republicans are offering to include a six-year extension of funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program, a major priority for Democrats, in the hopes of getting their votes. Funding for CHIP, which provides subsidized health insurance for children of low-income families, lapsed in September, but Congress approved another injection of money to keep CHIP going at the end of the year.

Democrats will have to choose between sticking to their guns and potentially forcing a government shutdown over DACA or taking the CHIP funding for now and hoping for an immigration bill to pass before the March deadline.

Schumer said Wednesday there is broad agreement within his party to oppose any deal that does not include DACA and CHIP.

“There is very, very strong support not to go along with their deal,” said Schumer.

Remember Billy Blaze? Also known as Commander Keen, he is fondly remembered for his action platforming exploits in the early nineties. The Commander Keen games were in many ways leading the way in the pre-Doom shareware era and are still fondly remembered by many players. 25 years later, along comes a little series called Cally’s Caves. 12-year-old me would have played the hell out of its latest chapter, Cally’s Caves 4.

37-year-old me is pretty excited about this trip down nostalgia lane, too. While the focus is clearly on the action in this action platformer, you still, run, jump, and shoot your way through literally hundreds of small levels inhabited by weirdly mundane enemies such as mad soccer players and knife-throwing cooks.

The levels feel somewhat samey, but they’re short enough for you not to get bored. Besides, they give you ample opportunity to unload your whole arsenal on those baddies, which is rather satisfying. Weapons get stronger the more you use them and even evolve into much better weapons every few levels. This feels oddly compelling and drives you ever forward towards the simple, yet entertaining boss fights.

In general, “simple, yet entertaining” seems to be the series’ premise. While the production values are not always up to what you might call modern standards, these games make the best of it and even turn this apparent weakness into an advantage. I mean come on, those goofy jumping sounds are so 90s, it’s simply adorable! If you fondly remember the old shareware days, Cally’s Caves 4 is definitely worth your time.

You can purchase Cally’s Caves 4 from Steam for $ 9.99 – or download the iOS or Android versions for free. For more information, visit the game’s website and follow developers OHKO and Jordan Pearson on Twitter.

Bitcoin is in the midst of its worst weekly sell off since 2013, and almost every other major cryptocurrency slumped on Friday.

That’s especially bad news for the handful of companies who recently announced a pivot to blockchain or another crypto focus. Their stock prices skyrocketed after announcing their pivots to the red-hot space, but most have settled back down — some even lower than where they were trading ahead of the announcements.

Business Insider rounded up the companies who recently announced pivots to see how much the share prices initially jumped — and where the dust settled after Friday’s slump:

WATCH: Drone captures footage of HUGE sea monster jumping out the ocean https://briefnews.eu/watch-drone-captures-footage-of-huge-sea-monster-jumping-out-the-ocean/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-drone-captures-footage-of-huge-sea-monster-jumping-out-the-ocean/#respond Sat, 02 Dec 2017 15:26:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-drone-captures-footage-of-huge-sea-monster-jumping-out-the-ocean/

Drone footage of a humpback whale is going viral after the pilot of the technology accidentally stumped across the great scene.

Imgur user AnotheroneSummer posted the unbelievable footage onto Imgur 14 hours ago.

Since then the stunning video has had well over a million views and hundreds of comments.

AnotheroneSummer said: “Guy flies his drone over water, accidentally gets this perfect shot.”

The initial scenes of the video shows just calm seas, nothing really to see other than the wonder of the ocean.

Seconds into the shot there is a commotion as the nose of a whale enters into shot.

Realising what was about to happen, the drone pilot swerves to make sure the camera is pointing in the right direction to capture ample footage.

The whale throws itself out of the sea and jumps into the air showing off its majestic, incredible body.

Before you know it, both flippers are out of the water and it’s playfully heading back into the sea on its back.

Appearing to be on its own, the whale splashes back into the sea with a great thud.

It flips back onto its front and disappears back into the abyss.

All the comments speak of the astounding footage. MagicSquid said: “Whale was attempting to eat the drone but missed.”

Jackalope2196 said: “Yeah, the water always looks peaceful, but I tell ya, there’s s*** swimming around down there.”

Another user, CaoimhinOHare said what we were all thinking: “Attenborough would be proud.”

And another joked: “It’s like God was all like ‘alright alright, watch this yo’.”

It comes after jaw-dropping footage shows a whale swimming under people at the beach.

Leapin' loser! Detroit police chase ends with suspect jumping onto oncoming minivan (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/leapin-loser-detroit-police-chase-ends-with-suspect-jumping-onto-oncoming-minivan-video/ https://briefnews.eu/leapin-loser-detroit-police-chase-ends-with-suspect-jumping-onto-oncoming-minivan-video/#respond Fri, 08 Sep 2017 21:43:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/leapin-loser-detroit-police-chase-ends-with-suspect-jumping-onto-oncoming-minivan-video/

A wanted man connected to an attempted murder had already evaded Detroit police once, but when he jumped a freeway median and ran into oncoming traffic, there was no escape even after he ran up the hood and roof of a minivan.

The suspect led Detroit police on two high-speed pursuits Friday, entering and leaving Interstate-75 northbound several times before his front driver’s side tire went flat before 1:00pm, KPRC reported.

The man abandoned his vehicle near the freeway’s concrete median, before jumping and running into oncoming traffic. As a Chrysler Town and Country minivan attempted to drive around him, he bounded onto its hood and fell onto its roof. It’s yet unclear what was going on in his head at this moment.

Homicide detectives had been chasing him in his charcoal gray SUV since 11:30am, Deputy Chief David LeValley told the Detroit Free Press.

A female victim was in extremely grave condition after being shot in the head Thursday morning in southwest Detroit, WJBK reported.

“The victim is at a local hospital in gravely critical condition,” LeValley said. “There was an exchange of gunfire with a small caliber gun and she was hit in the head. He was an associate in the neighborhood in southwest Detroit.”

Jumping The Gun https://briefnews.eu/jumping-the-gun/ https://briefnews.eu/jumping-the-gun/#respond Fri, 30 Jun 2017 05:45:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jumping-the-gun/

The Iraqi government declared Thursday that Iraq was rid of ISIS after its forces reclaimed Mosul, the country’s second largest city, from the terror group. There was just one problem: Almost no one agreed with the assessment that the war on ISIS in Iraq was all but over.

The US military said Thursday at least three other ISIS-controlled Iraqi cities face the kind of military campaigns that have all but destroyed other cities in the push to free them. Aid organizations said life in Mosul remains fragile, even after its near liberation. And a report released Wednesday by a top counter terrorism research group noted that the liberation of Iraqi cities hasn’t ended ISIS’s threat to the country; according to the report by West Point’s Combating Terrorism Center there’ve been 1,468 ISIS attacks in Iraqi and Syrian cities after they’d supposedly been freed from ISIS control.

“Pushing the Islamic State out as the formal governing party in a territory is not a sufficient development when it comes to ending the group’s ability to enact violence against individuals in Iraq and Syria,” the report concluded.

Still, Iraqi officials celebrated what they called the recapture of Mosul, symbolized by Iraqi troops’ occupation Thursday of the al-Nuri Mosque, the historic site where ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared the creation of the Islamic State nearly three years ago and where ISIS sappers demolished its famed leaning al-Habda minaret only days ago. ISIS fighters now control only two areas in the city, both US and Iraqi officials said — the warren of streets immediately around the mosque and a hospital complex, both on the city’s west side.

“The return of al-Nuri Mosque and al-Hadba minaret to the fold of the nation marks the end of the Daesh state of falsehood,” Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in a statement, using an Arabic term for ISIS.

Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool, an Iraqi military spokesman, reportedly told state television that the “fictitious state has fallen.”

Photos from the city showed Iraqi troops moving among the rubble of the mosque in what was a climax to an eight-month campaign to retake the city. But fighting is likely to continue for a while longer as Iraqi troops clear the remaining pockets of ISIS fighters, Army Col. Ryan Dillon, a spokesman for the US military campaign in Iraq and Syria, told reporters at the Pentagon.

The complete liberation of Mosul is “closer to days versus weeks” away, he said.

After that, a new war front will open, Dillon said. The Iraqi government will decide which ISIS-controlled Iraqi city to liberate next, with help of a barrage of coalition strikes – al Qaim, Tal Afar or Hawijah, he said. In all, there are 150,000 Iraqi citizens still living under ISIS control in those cities, including 75,000 children, Wendy Taeuber, Iraq country director for the International Rescue Committee, said in a statement.

The cost to liberate Mosul – and other ISIS-controlled cities before – has been high. Piles of rubble are all that remain of neighborhoods in the liberated cities of Fallujah and Ramadi, and Mosul’s west side bears deep scars from months of combat, Dillon said.

Only 191,000 residents have returned to the city’s eastern half since it was retaken by government troops in January – and it is far less damaged than the west. In all, 900,000 residents have fled Mosul, according to aid groups.

Moreover, Iraq’s counter terrorism force, which has fought ISIS in at least a half-dozen Iraqi cities, has had an attrition rate — dead and wounded — of roughly 40 percent during the Mosul campaign.

Past campaigns to liberate Iraqi cities so far have failed to turn Iraqi cities into inhabitable communities again.

The West Point study noted that in Fallujah, which was liberated from ISIS a year ago, “the citizens of the city are still facing an array of challenges, from destroyed buildings to live Islamic State munitions buried in the rubble to the continuing threat of Islamic State attacks.” As of March, the mayor of Fallujah had yet to return to the city to live; instead, he visits periodically from his home in the Iraqi city of Irbil, the study said.

Since the liberation two years ago of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, ISIS has struck there 163 times, according to the West Point report.

Aid groups already are warning that even in liberated parts of Mosul, residents face water and medicine shortages. The children of Mosul face particular hardships, according to UNICEF.

In western Mosul’s old city, “children are facing multiple threats to their lives. Those stranded in the fighting are hiding in their basements, fearful of the next onslaught. Those who try to flee, risk being shot or wounded. Hundreds of civilians have already been reported killed and used as human shields,” Peter Hawkins, UNICEF’s representative in Iraq, said in a statement. “Boys and girls who have managed to escape show signs of moderate malnutrition and carry psychosocial scars of the conflict, as a consequence of what they have been through.”

Dillon said the US military would not be involved in rebuilding Mosul. That would fall to the Iraqi government, with help from the State Department, USAID, and non-governmental organizations.

“The liberation of cities in Iraq and Syria has proved to be much more of a mixed bag for those living in the aftermath,” the West Point study concluded.
