RELATED STORIES

Despite Julie and the Phantoms being a TV show about rock ‘n’ roll ghosts, the Netflix comedy’s most pleasant surprise is neither musical nor supernatural.

It’s the relationship between drummer Alex (played by Knight Squad‘s Owen Joyner), who is revealed to be openly gay in Episode 2, and fellow ghost Willie (played by Descendants‘ Booboo Stewart).

Without spoiling their entire journey over the show’s nine-episode first season, the pair’s connection is not only respected but celebrated, resulting in the kind of refreshingly positive representation of a same-sex relationship that you don’t often see in programming targeted at a younger audience.

“The way that Alex deals with his issues — including finding acceptance from his chosen family, instead of his given family — is a cool thing for kids to see,” Joyner tells TVLine. “You’ve got your friends, too, and you can lean on them,”

Read on for our full Q&A with Joyner about bringing Alex (back) to life, fanboying over Cheyenne Jackson and developing an on-screen relationship with Stewart:

TVLINE | I have to say, this was one of the most bingeable shows I’ve watched in a minute. This must have been a dream project for you.
Oh, I was excited as soon as I first read the breakdown for the show and the characters. I’d been with Nickelodeon for six years, where I did two shows and one pilot, but I never got to bring that musical side of myself into any of my projects. And I’ve been doing musical theater since I was 10, so singing, playing the drums and acting are the three things I love to do. I also hate to dance, and I figured that I wouldn’t have to dance as the drummer. I was wrong.

TVLINE | Uh-oh, what happened?
I think it was on the first day of rehearsals. Kenny came in and said, “Owen, I’ve got the perfect thing for you — a dance number with Carrie!” I was like, “What do you have in mind?” And he was like, “Oh, something small.” The way Kenny works is that he’ll pitch something to you that he knows you’re nervous about, but he’ll make it seem like nothing. And then you end up doing an entire choreographed dance in front of, like, 70 background and crew members. It was actually a lot of fun.

Julie And The Phantoms CalebTVLINE | Speaking of the show’s music, has any particular earworm gotten stuck in your head?
They’re all in my head at this point, but I had a few favorite ones on set. I watched Madison do “Wake Up,” which is such a beautiful song, and I hadn’t heard the mastered version yet. And then we had the sun that came up in the background, which was beautiful, and Kenny was tearing up. To see [Madison Reyes] sort of find her place on set was a really cool moment — I was happy to be there for it. I also grew up doing musical theater, so I knew all about Cheyenne Jackson. We had already gotten our parts when Kenny was looking for someone to play Caleb, and when he brought up Cheyenne Jackson, I pooped myself a little bit. I was like, “Oh, yeah, that’d be cool.” So “Other Side of Hollywood” was insane to film, because I just sat there watching Cheyenne Jackson doing his thing.

TVLINE | Well, I’m now a Sunset Curve fan. You guys really do have great chemistry as bandmates.
We had a big six-week rehearsal process before we started shooting. When we started it, we figured that they just want us to learn the songs and instruments, but it actually went way past that. [Kenny] wanted us to bond and become friends, and it worked. I’ve made friends for life.

TVLINE | Let’s talk about Alex. I won’t lie, when I heard there was an openly gay character on this show, I thought, “Cool, he’ll have two lines and no love interests.” I was wrong.
[Laughs] No! You should have faith in Kenny Ortega.

TVLINE | I really should. How does it feel to play an openly character on a show directed at a slightly younger audience? It’s kind of a rarity.
At first, I was very excited because I thought it was a story that the younger generation could benefit greatly from seeing. And the way that Alex deals with his issues — including finding acceptance from his chosen family, instead of his given family — is a cool thing for kids to see. You’ve got your friends, too, and you can lean on them. I just wanted to play Alex honestly and respectfully. I wanted to do something that people would be proud of, and I hope they are. I just trusted Kenny when he said he wanted me to play it, and I gave it my best shot.

TVLINE | And I’m not sure kids can appreciate how much courage it must have taken Alex to come out back in 1995.
Yes! He’s been himself since ’95. And that’s another thing that was so important for Kenny. Alex never really had a big coming-out episode. Kenny and the writers knew that this kid has always been proud to be himself. And I think it’s cool to make it a normal thing within television. His struggles are less about “How am I going to come out?” and more just about acceptance.

TVLINE | Well, I’m pretty sure that Alex is TV’s first openly gay drummer — definitely the first openly gay ghost drummer.
[Laughs] I’m hoping he’s a first in something.

Julie And The Phantoms Alex & WillieTVLINE | I was excited to see that Alex and Willie ended up as the show’s main couple. How was it building that dynamic with Booboo Stewart?
So cool. He’s the best. He’s the coolest guy ever. He was a guest star, so he wasn’t with us at our seven weeks of rehearsals and training. We had all become best friends by then, and we were going into filming the show with this real relationship. Booboo and I were worried because we had to create a relationship out of nowhere, but he touched down the day before we started filming and was like, “Can I come over and run lines?” So we did that for a couple of hours. He’s just the coolest guy ever, so it was all really natural.

TVLINE | Do you believe Willie really has feelings for Alex, that he wasn’t just getting close to him at Caleb’s behest?
If I were to write it, yes, I think there are feelings there. As an actor, I really hope so, because I had the best time with Booboo. If we get a second season, I know it would be the best time again.

Big Brother: Julie Chen Moonves Sheds Light on Sign-Off: ‘Black Lives Matter and Now Is the Time to Speak Up’ https://briefnews.eu/big-brother-julie-chen-moonves-sheds-light-on-sign-off-black-lives-matter-and-now-is-the-time-to-speak-up/ https://briefnews.eu/big-brother-julie-chen-moonves-sheds-light-on-sign-off-black-lives-matter-and-now-is-the-time-to-speak-up/#respond Sat, 15 Aug 2020 14:39:17 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/big-brother-julie-chen-moonves-sheds-light-on-sign-off-black-lives-matter-and-now-is-the-time-to-speak-up/

Veritably answering two of TVLine’s recent TV Questions, Julie Chen Moonves has shed light on the intent of her feel-good Big Brother All-Stars sign-off messages.

Whereas the host traditionally ends her on-camera appearance by saying, “From outside the Big Brother house, I’m Julie Chen Moonves. Goodnight,” she capped the Aug. 5 season opener by inviting viewers to “Be safe, be well, and be good to one another.” And at the conclusion of the Aug. 13 episode, she cued the audience to “remember the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Chen Moonves has since explained to EW that these closing messages are not any set of cryptic clues to upcoming in-game twists (as some theorized), but simply positive inspiration for outside the Big Brother house.

“I mentioned the Golden Rule because I believe that if EVERYONE followed that principle, we’d ALL be better off as a society, as a nation, as a world,” Chen Moonves wrote to EW. “I chose to close with those words because Black Lives Matter and now is the time to speak up.

“If the number of Black lives that have been taken happened to people of your heritage, you would be saying (fill-in-the-blank) Lives Matter! It’s my faith in God that is getting me through these uncertain times. We CAN be better. Why not try? It can’t hurt. It can only help. Most of all, it’ll help the person who rises to the occasion,” she said.

Big Brother‘s 22nd season is currently underway with 16 returning houseguests vying for the $ 500,000 prize. Participants include former winners Nicole Franzel and Ian Terry, in addition to fan favorites like Janelle Pierzina, Tyler Crispen and Da’Vonne Rogers. The show aired its first live eviction episode Thursday. (Find out which houseguest was the first evictee.)

‘Aquaman’ Gets a Spoonful of Sugar from Julie Andrews https://briefnews.eu/aquaman-gets-a-spoonful-of-sugar-from-julie-andrews/ https://briefnews.eu/aquaman-gets-a-spoonful-of-sugar-from-julie-andrews/#respond Sat, 24 Nov 2018 20:42:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/aquaman-gets-a-spoonful-of-sugar-from-julie-andrews/ Julie Andrews in Aquaman

With Mary Poppins Returns heading to theaters next month, you might think that it’s a no-brainer that the original film’s star Julie Andrews would be making some kind of appearance in the Disney sequel. However, the actress has already confirmed she didn’t want to take away from Emily Blunt inheriting the role of the magical nanny, so she’s not popping up in Mary Poppins Returns. Instead, another major December release has been graced with the talents of Julie Andrews.

Aquaman has been completely finished for a little while now, with reactions from early screenings already hitting the web and other early screenings planned one week before the film officially hits theaters everywhere. But we’re only just now hearing that Julie Andrews is lending her voice to a certain character in the DC Comics adaptation.

Find out where you’ll hear Julie Andrews in Aquaman below.

Entertainment Weekly found out the Sound of Music star would be voicing a mythical undersea creature known as the Karathen. The character who holds the key to helping Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) broker peace between Atlantis and the surface world.

Julie Andrews hasn’t appeared in a live-action movie since The Tooth Fairy back in 2010. However, she has lent her voice to the Despicable Me franchise as Gru’s mother, as well as the Queen mother of Princess Fiona in the Shrek franchise. But this is the first time her voice has been lent to a major live-action blockbuster in over a decade. She previously voiced the narrator in Disney’s Enchanted.

So how did we get the voice of Julie Andrews in Aquaman? Producer Peter Safran explains:

“We wanted the Karathen to have the voice of a classic British actress, albeit somewhat digitally altered. And when we found out Julie was interested and available and excited to do it, casting her was a no-brainer. Who knew that Aquaman would have the real Mary Poppins this Christmas?”

Aquaman will be opening in theaters on December 21, 2018, just a couple days before Mary Poppins Returns arrives in time for Christmas. But you’ll be able to catch it a week earlier if you have an Amazon Prime membership. Which one will top the box office during the Christmas holiday weekend? Early projections have Aquaman with an edge over Mary Poppins Returns, but we won’t know for sure until the movies hit theaters.

POV podcast: U.S. hockey great Julie Chu on living with the enemy https://briefnews.eu/pov-podcast-u-s-hockey-great-julie-chu-on-living-with-the-enemy/ https://briefnews.eu/pov-podcast-u-s-hockey-great-julie-chu-on-living-with-the-enemy/#respond Tue, 25 Sep 2018 14:03:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pov-podcast-u-s-hockey-great-julie-chu-on-living-with-the-enemy/

Considering she's a leader of Canada's arch-rival in women's hockey, Julie Chu is remarkably well respected in this country.

The former United States captain has done just about everything a person can do in her sport, and now she's working for the future of women's hockey while playing for her Montreal-based pro team, Les Canadiennes.

On this week's Player's Own Voice podcast, Julie settles in with host Anastasia Buscis to talk about "living with the enemy" (she and her partner, Team Canada's Caroline Ouellette, are raising their daughter in Montreal) and her proudest moment in hockey — when the American women stood together in 2017 and refused to play in the world championships unless they got equal treatment to the men's team.

They won that battle and went on to beat Canada for Olympic gold in Pyeongchang, which was an interesting experience for Chu — how hard do you cheer when your team is winning but your couchmate's team is taking it on the chin?

Chu is the latest elite athlete to share her story on the POV podcast, which takes an unconventional approach to sports conversations. Like CBC Sports' Player's Own Voice essay series, the POV podcast lets athletes speak to Canadians about issues from a personal perspective.

To listen to Julie's chat and others in our growing list of athletes, Player's Own Voice is available free on iTunes, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Tune In or wherever you get your podcasts.

Julie Chen Reacts to Les Moonves Allegations: 'I Support My Husband' https://briefnews.eu/julie-chen-reacts-to-les-moonves-allegations-i-support-my-husband/ https://briefnews.eu/julie-chen-reacts-to-les-moonves-allegations-i-support-my-husband/#respond Sat, 28 Jul 2018 00:33:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/julie-chen-reacts-to-les-moonves-allegations-i-support-my-husband/

Julie Chen is standing by embattled husband Les Moonves following an explosive New Yorker investigation in which six women accused the CBS CEO of sexual misconduct.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the host of CBS’ The Talk and Big Brother said, “I have known my husband, Leslie Moonves, since the late ‘90s, and I have been married to him for almost 14 years. Leslie is a good man and a loving father, devoted husband and inspiring corporate leader. He has always been a kind, decent and moral human being. I fully support my husband and stand behind him and his statement.”

Four of the women — Illeana Douglas, Janet Jones, Christine Peters and Dinah Kirgo — spoke on the record with The New Yorker‘s Ronan Farrow about their interactions with Moonves. They detailed incidents of unwanted kissing and touching by Moonves, as well as intimidation, that occurred across multiple decades.

Moonves acknowledged that “there were times decades ago when I may have made some women uncomfortable by making advances. Those were mistakes, and I regret them immensely. But I always understood and respected — and abided by the principle — that ‘no’ means ‘no,’ and I have never misused my position to harm or hinder anyone’s career.”

Mamma Mia 2: Julie Walters admits fearing sequel Here We Go Again would be ‘awful’ https://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-julie-walters-admits-fearing-sequel-here-we-go-again-would-be-awful/ https://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-julie-walters-admits-fearing-sequel-here-we-go-again-would-be-awful/#respond Sat, 30 Jun 2018 15:10:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-julie-walters-admits-fearing-sequel-here-we-go-again-would-be-awful/

But news that the ABBA-inspired movie would be returning sparked inevitable concerns from fans that it wouldn’t live up to the original.

Dame Julie Walters, it seems, was no exception.

Walters plays Rosie in both movies; part of a double-act with Christine Baranski.

“I couldn’t see how it could work and what they could do with us,” she told Good Housekeeping.

“My first reaction when my agent told me they were making Mamma Mia 2 was, ‘oh God no, it is going to be awful’.

“But the script was so good. I think it is fantastic. I think it is better than the first one.”

Walters also praised Cher, with whom she stars in Here We Go Again.

“It was heaven having her there, she’s a really great girl. I’m a massive fan,” she beamed.

“I always loved her as a kid. She was great and she sings this song at the end which makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck.”

Also reprising their roles in the follow-up are Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Dominic Cooper and Meryl Streep.

Lily James, meanwhile, joins as the younger version of Streep’s Donna.

Colin Firth and Julie Walters Explore Marc Munden’s ‘The Secret Garden’ Remake https://briefnews.eu/colin-firth-and-julie-walters-explore-marc-mundens-the-secret-garden-remake/ https://briefnews.eu/colin-firth-and-julie-walters-explore-marc-mundens-the-secret-garden-remake/#respond Sun, 29 Apr 2018 20:07:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/colin-firth-and-julie-walters-explore-marc-mundens-the-secret-garden-remake/ the secret garden remake

The Secret Garden will bloom once again. The Secret Garden remake is in the works, with Marc Munden (Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams) helming the “fantastical reimagining” of Frances Hodgson Burnett‘s classic children’s novel. And it already has the perfect, quintessentially British cast led by Colin Firth and Julie Walters.

Firth and Walters are set to star in The Secret Garden remake for Studiocanal and Heyday Films, according to Deadline. David Heyman, who is best known for steering the Harry Potter franchise, is producing.

But this won’t be The Secret Garden you recognize. Instead of being set in the Edwardian era in which it was first published, the script by Jack Thorne transports the story to 1947, on the eve of Partition of India and in the aftermath of World War II in Britain. This is an intriguing twist, since the beginning of the story sees Mary Lennox’s parents killed in a cholera epidemic, which leads to her being sent to live with her gloomy uncle Archibald Craven in the moors of Yorkshire, England. The Partition of India was marked by bloody and brutal riots in the aftermath of Britain relinquishing colonial rule and clumsily dividing the country into India and Pakistan. It’s a chaotic setting to kick off the story of a spoiled, wealthy girl who is suddenly thrust into the real world after the death of her parents, and will definitely make for a striking start to the movie. The 1993 feature film adaptation of The Secret Garden, which co-starred Maggie Smith in an BAFTA-nominated role, also upped the drama of Mary’s orphaning, killing her parents in an earthquake.

The Secret Garden begins principal photography Monday. In the announcement of the production start, Munden said:

“This is a fantastical reimagining of The Secret Garden. I can’t wait to explore it. It’s an opportunity to immerse ourselves in an uncanny and wondrous world, which will play to the imaginations of adults and children alike.”

After 10-year-old Mary (to be played by Genius star Dixie Egerickx) is sent to live with her brooding uncle in the isolated Misselthwaite Manor, she begins to discover the secrets that her family and the vast grounds are hiding, including a sickly cousin named Colin (Edan Hayhurst, Genius) and a wild, walled-off garden. “Together, the two damaged, slightly misfit children heal each other — partly through their exposure to a wondrous secret garden, lost in the grounds of Misselthwaite Manor,” according to Deadline.

Walters will play Mrs. Medlock, the strict head housekeeper at Misselthwaite, while Firth will bring back familiar brooding skills (I’m expecting Mr. Darcy levels!) to play Archibald Craven.

I’m excited for a new take on The Secret Garden. I grew up loving Hodgson Burnett’s book, fascinated by the unlikable protagonist Mary Lennox, and its kid-friendly approach to Gothic Romance. I even had a pop-up book that was tied with the release of the 1993 movie! This is a timeless story that has had many great adaptations — I also recommend the web series, The Misselthwaite Archives — and this new reimagining sounds like a bold new take on an age-old story.

The series stars SNL alum Sasheer Zamata and Odd Mom Out‘s Sean Kleier as Riley and Kyle, two hopeless romantics who are both on the verge of settling for the wrong partner and unaware they might be soulmates. Klausner will play Amy, a friend of Riley’s who works with her at a law firm.
