The CW’s bonkers young adult drama keeps piling on the twists, and this week’s episode of Riverdale was no different. Fans were genuinely stumped by the latest chapter, ‘Fire in the Sky’, which seemed to confirm extraterrestrial invaders had infiltrated the town.

The small town of Riverdale had yet another brush with the supernatural in the latest episode of the show’s unpredictable fifth season.

After jumping ahead by seven years, Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa) and his friends return home in their mid-20s in hopes of restoring their old high school to its former glory.

Unfortunately, the situation in the town has only gotten worse over the years, and the gang find themselves once again pulled into various conspiracies.

This week’s instalment, ‘Fire in the Sky’, saw Archie volunteer at the local fire department.

Meanwhile, Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) tries to coax Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) out of isolation, and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) uncovers yet another serial killer.

Where the show may start to lose viewers is when struggling author Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) stumbles upon a mystery of his own.

Fans were already gripped before the series took a two week break as the previous episode warned of a mysterious Mothman who could be stalking the town.

Now the series appears to have fully embraced the supernatural as Jughead could become the victim of an alien abduction.

“This Mothman thing is getting very Scooby Doo,” said one viewer.

“I feel like they’re gonna unmask an alien in the finale and be like “It was Old Man Mr. Jenkins this entire time!” and explain how everything was done using magnets and holograms.”

The series has certainly come close to introducing other-worldly concepts when the Gargoyle King was still in town, as well as the gang’s ordeal with Edgar Neverever (Chad Michael Murray) and the Farm.

While this fan rightly pointed out that Riverdale’s latest spooky conspiracy will probably be revealed as yet another elaborate hoax, others had their doubts.

Another viewer said: “On the one hand I don’t want this show to add aliens.

“But on the other hand any non-alien explanation is probably gonna be dumb as all hell so I guess I’m doomed to have this show melt my brain either way.”

The series remains as addictive as ever, but long-suffering fans may have to suspend their disbelief to dizzying degrees in the coming episodes once Jughead starts to investigate further.

Riverdale season 5 continues Wednesday, March 17 on the CW and the following Thursday on Netflix.

Riverdale has returned to The CW and Netflix and already there has been plenty of weird and wonderful drama for fans to get their teeth stuck into. From Veronica Lodge (played by Camila Mendes) teaming up with Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) to create their maple syrup-based rum, to Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) selling tickling videos online for hundreds of dollars, there is never a quiet moment in the suburban town. There are still many mysteries which have yet to be solved but could the death of Riverdale’s beloved writer bring another two characters closer together?

When Riverdale first started back in 2017, Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) had a massive crush on her childhood friend and neighbour Archie Andrews (KJ Apa).

Her feelings were sadly unrequited by the redhead but that was soon swept under the carpet with the introduction of Veronica and Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse).

Jughead was an old friend of Archie’s but spent less time together in recent years until they eventually reconnected once more.

Veronica was the new girl in Riverdale in the first season, having moved there from New York.

Quickly enough, Archie and Veronica got together and so did Betty and Jughead and this is how it has been for the majority of the show.

However, Riverdale fans will remember one particular moment which could have potentially ruined the two couples for good.

After Betty broke up with Jughead and following the ongoing problems caused by her father Hal Cooper (Lochlyn Munro) who is better known to many as the Black Hood, she confides in Archie.

They go on a mission together to find out the serial killer’s identity but when the pair are waiting in a car and Betty gets upset, they end up sharing a passionate kiss.

They do pull away from each other and then agree to carry on with what they were meant to be doing, hunting down the Black Hood.

Thankfully for Archie, when he tells Veronica what happened, she quickly forgives him as they weren’t together at the time and labelled it as a “my life is at risk” kiss.

The kiss has never been mentioned again but going by the latest episode, there still could be a chance for “Barchie” yet.

Will Archie and Betty get together after Jughead ‘dies’ in Riverdale?

Since the season three finale, Riverdale has been showing brief flash forwards which indicate Jughead has been killed but under what circumstances is still unclear.

But in the latest flash forward which was shown at the end of Quiz Show, a tearful Betty is sitting alone in Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe when Archie sits with her.

“I don’t think I can do this anymore Arch”, she said.

“Keep waiting for Jughead to come back and he doesn’t and he won’t, he won’t ever come back.

“And I don’t know how I’m supposed to keep going.”

He replies: “Day by day, we’ll get through this together.”

“I’m a weirdo.”

Riverdale has always been weird to some extent, using its Breakfast Club spirit to connect with a largely teenage audience — but it doesn’t always work to the show’s advantage, as seen by the latest kickback it’s received.

[Warning: This contains minor spoilers for the events of Riverdale’s tenth episode.]

Archie Comics’ oddball has always been Jughead Jones. In Riverdale, gone is the apathetic, aloof wanderer. The new Jughead, played by Cole Sprouse, is a much more jaded individual. He’s the poster boy for the type of teenager who would rather sit at home and listen to Joy Division or Bauhaus and stream classic horror movies. He’s an outsider, sitting on the fringe of the normal high school student, and Riverdale never lets you forget that.

The overbearing, borderline comical teenage angst Jughead carries with him came to a tipping point in the most recent episode. In one particular scene, Jughead is talking to Betty about just how weird he is. He’s not just weird. He’s really weird. It’s not that he doesn’t fit in, he specifically aims to swim against the stream. He’s an individual, a self-proclaimed “edgy” teen, and people are digging into that.

It’s a particularly cringe-worthy moment for the character, who already plays into an exaggerated caricature. It didn’t take long after the scene aired for people to start mocking Jughead and his angst, but in the week following the episode’s airing, the joke has grown beyond the show’s regular fan base.

This isn’t a usual case of “something happens in a game or show and becomes a meme within that same industry” that we’ve seen time and time again.

The subject matter of the scene transcends genre television, opening the door for those who aren’t interested in Riverdale to join in on the joke.

One of the best versions of the joke going around also happens to be based on another meme, simultaneously taking over Twitter: creating music playlists that use the titles of different songs to spell out a message. In this case, one Twitter user managed to compile a list of tracks that spells out Jughead’s entire speech.

Networks like Nickelodeon have also decided to get in on the fun, tweeting out its own version of the speech focusing on Hey Arnold!’s titular character.

Sprouse, an avid Twitter user, has embraced the sensation his character has caused. He’s retweeted those who have sent him their own versions of the scene in question and only once asked his haters to politely step off.

Sprouse hasn’t said anything about whether his character will get any weirder in the remaining episodes of Riverdale’s first season, but it’s pretty apparent that Jughead is okay with being the oddball out.

Riverdale airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on the CW.
