(When your elimination inspires a Change.org petition, you know you’re doing something right.)

TVLine spoke with the Fuller House actor after his surprising ouster, and he admitted the elimination was “heartbreaking,” despite being touched by the “outpouring of love and outrage and anger” from fans.

“People are so amazing, and the fans are so vocal, so I’m good. I’m really good,” Di Pace told us. “But I was still shocked and sad to lose. For me, it’s a talent and a love for dance competition. It’s heartbreaking when you work your ass off.”

In order to determine who goes home each week, Dancing With the Stars combines the judges’ scores (which can reach a maximum of 30 points) with votes from the home audience. But the current system weighs viewers’ votes more heavily, which means even a well-scored contestant like Di Pace can be sent packing if he doesn’t get enough support from the audience. In fact, Di Pace was sent home even after scoring perfect 30s for both of Monday’s performances.

DWTS Juan Pablo Eliminated“It’s like a chess game. Every moment, every interview, every dance, every comment from a judge could either hinder you or get you to the next week,” Di Pace said. “We knew we weren’t the ones with millions of fans. We were the ones with a lot of hard work and passion and talent. So I wasn’t sure I was going through.”

On the heels of Di Pace’s elimination, incensed fans are calling for changes to the voting system; some have even suggested the introduction of a “judges’ save,” through which Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli can spare a couple that would otherwise be booted. (And this isn’t the first time such an idea has been posed: Glee alum Heather Morris was also prematurely eliminated from Season 24, which sparked a similar discussion about changes to the voting.)

“The show’s been going on for 27 seasons, and looking at the thousands of comments I’ve got, people aren’t happy with the system. So, yeah, 27 seasons later, maybe it is time for a refresh, a little nip and tuck,” Di Pace offered. “Maybe instead of being completely a popularity contest, it could actually be more of a skill contest. But who am I to say? I think the fans’ outrage will probably work for something.”

Di Pace and partner Cheryl Burke have been invited to reprise their Argentine tango on Monday’s season finale — and even though “it’s not about the trophy” for Di Pace, he regrets that his partnership with Burke had to come to an early end.

“If I’m going to be objective, we were the ones bringing pieces of art to the show. We were bringing really good, amazing pieces,” he said. “For that reason alone — the fact that we didn’t get to perform one last freestyle, which was going to be out of this world — I’m sad.” (With reporting by Andy Swift)

Argentine military sub San Juan missing for 1 year found deep in Atlantic, military confirms https://briefnews.eu/argentine-military-sub-san-juan-missing-for-1-year-found-deep-in-atlantic-military-confirms/ https://briefnews.eu/argentine-military-sub-san-juan-missing-for-1-year-found-deep-in-atlantic-military-confirms/#respond Sat, 17 Nov 2018 07:30:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/argentine-military-sub-san-juan-missing-for-1-year-found-deep-in-atlantic-military-confirms/

The submarine ARA San Juan that vanished in the Atlantic over a year ago with 44 sailors on board has finally been detected at a depth of 800 meters, the Argentine military has confirmed.

The ARA San Juan was discovered by Ocean Infinity, an American company contracted by the Argentine military to lead the search effort. The company’s vessel, Seabed Constructor, “has positively identified” the missing submarine lying at a chilling depth of 800 meters, the Argentine Navy confirmed in a tweet on Saturday morning.

Previously, the navy said the Seabed Constructor detected what it said was “a point of interest.” The object was approximately 60 meters long and its shape resembled a submarine hull.

Relatives of missing sailors were notified before the news was broken by Argentine media. It also comes just days after families of the submariners gathered at Mar del Plata naval base to commemorate and mourn their loved ones.

Now, with the submarine lying so deep on the seabed, it may be nearly impossible to know what happened to it. The navy will seek to determine if the San Juan can be raised from its current spot.

One year ago, the ARA San Juan, laid down in 1983 in German shipyards, went missing in the Atlantic with 44 crew on board. The sub was on a routine mission, and its sudden disappearance gave birth to numerous theories and rumors.

Local media reported that before communication with the submarine was lost, its captain reported a short circuit caused by the entry of sea water into the battery compartment.

A fire breaking out inside could have triggered a blast on board, the navy said at the time, adding that its listening posts detected “abnormal, singular, short, violent” sounds “consistent with an explosion.”

The search for the diesel-electric submarine started immediately, involving ships and aircraft manned by personnel from 13 countries. On November 30, after a 15-day operation, the navy decided to end the operation. The rescuers allowed for twice the possible time that the crew could have remained alive.

In the months that followed, reports on the fate of the submariners continued to swirl in local media, including that the San Juan was being shadowed by the British and Chilean military around the time of its disappearance.

Jesica Medina, a local woman, reported her brother telling her that the submarine was sailing close to the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) when a Royal Navy helicopter started chasing them down, along with a Chilean ship.

“On Monday, an English helicopter was looking for us, and yesterday the Chileans, there has been a lot going on,” second sub-officer Roberto Medina told his sister in the message, according to Argentina’s La Gaceta newspaper. There was no official confirmation.

But the newspaper report revived memories of the brief 1982 UK-Argentina war over the disputed islands, in which 655 Argentine and 255 British servicemen lost their lives. Argentina still claims the islands as its own. The issue has emerged in recent years again as Britain has begun to explore possible offshore oilfields in the area.

OZY Media’s third prime-time television show, Breaking Big, airs Fridays at 8.30 p.m. ET on PBS stations, OZY.com and Facebook Watch. Join us as we explore the unexpected journeys to the success of some of the world’s most influential stars.

One year after Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, the U.S. territory is still struggling to rebuild. Meanwhile, President Trump continues to deny that as many as 3,000 people may have died from the hurricane, despite Harvard research putting the death toll at more than 4,000.

After Maria hit last year, the people of San Juan saw their mayor, Carmen Yulín Cruz, spring into action. She trudged through waist-high water, bringing food and supplies to devastated neighborhoods, and lived and worked out of shelters with thousands of displaced Puerto Ricans for weeks.

She also put on her boxing gloves. “I am done being polite. I am done being politically correct. I am mad as hell,” Cruz said in response to the astonishing lack of aid the island received from the U.S. federal government in the wake of the hurricane.

Cruz has received a heavy dose of criticism for her candid words, but she’s fighting for the people of Puerto Rico — something she’s dreamed about since childhood. After attending Boston University for college and Carnegie Mellon for graduate school, Cruz felt a pull to return home and enter public service. When she ran for mayor of San Juan in 2012, she beat the three-term incumbent, Jorge Santini, by 6,000 votes, stunning everyone in the process.

Though her job has been a frequent uphill battle, Cruz says she’s fallen in love with being mayor. “The government is a platform for equalizing — for getting everyone to the starting line at the same time, with the same skills,” she says.

As Hurricane Florence touches down on the Carolina coast, the U.S. is waiting to see how severe the damage will be — and how the government will respond.

Cruz had to make a big fuss to turn America’s attention to the devastation in Puerto Rico, but she doesn’t think she did anything special. “I screamed for help when people were dying. I didn’t look the other way,” she says. “That should be what people do.”

Rafael Nadal: Juan Martin del Potro reveals French Open support over centre court claim https://briefnews.eu/rafael-nadal-juan-martin-del-potro-reveals-french-open-support-over-centre-court-claim/ https://briefnews.eu/rafael-nadal-juan-martin-del-potro-reveals-french-open-support-over-centre-court-claim/#respond Fri, 01 Jun 2018 02:36:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rafael-nadal-juan-martin-del-potro-reveals-french-open-support-over-centre-court-claim/

Nadal complained after his first round win over Simone Bolelli that the Court Philippe Chatrier was more slippery than he had ever played on in the past, despite winning in straight sets.

The match had to be played over two days with weather interrupting play during the third set of what proved to be the world No 1’s 80th Roland Garros win, Nadal post-match blasting the lack of “proper grip” and claiming there are “no excuses” for the conditions.

Del Potro took to Chatrier yesterday to see off Julien Benneteau in the second round, winning 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 against the home hope.

And the fifth-seeded Argentine – who has never got past the semi-finals of the Grand Slam in Paris – agreed with Nadal that the court was tricky to play on, although he admitted that the surface was better than a week ago.

“I think it’s okay, but it could be better,” Del Potro told journalists.

“With the days they are certainly going to improve this. And also, in the middle [of the match], it rained a little bit so it got a bit wet, and so it was a bit slower, and then the sun came out. It was a bit faster.

“But you have to compare with the days when we practiced a week ago. I can tell you the court has improved a lot.”

Del Potro played only four clay-court singles matches matches ahead of the French Open – winning once and losing once at both the Madrid Open and Italian Open.

That was after enjoying a break following the Miami Open after an exhaustive first-half of the season involved a 15-match winning streak and the defeat of Roger Federer in the Indian Wells Masters final.

Asked about the level of his tennis, the 29-year-old said: “Very well. I feel better than in the first round.

“I was able to make more wins, to run better. The level of my game was a bit higher.

“So this made me feel good, and I’m happy to know that I’m improving day after day, that the day after tomorrow [Saturday] I have another match to try and feel good.”

Del Potro faces Albert Ramos in the third round (tomorrow, 10am) and on his clash with the Spaniard, he added: “I believe as he’s left-handed, his forehand is his best stroke and my backhand is my best stroke.

“The Spaniards, they like to play long matches, so it’s going to be a difficult challenge.”

Juan Martin del Potro: HUGE challenge laid down to Argentine after stunning recent form https://briefnews.eu/juan-martin-del-potro-huge-challenge-laid-down-to-argentine-after-stunning-recent-form/ https://briefnews.eu/juan-martin-del-potro-huge-challenge-laid-down-to-argentine-after-stunning-recent-form/#respond Wed, 04 Apr 2018 02:25:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/juan-martin-del-potro-huge-challenge-laid-down-to-argentine-after-stunning-recent-form/

That’s the opinion of Sky Sports tennis pundit and former British female No 1 Annabel Croft.

Del Potro’s 15-match winning streak saw him claim titles in Acapulco and Indian Wells – his first Masters 1000 success.

But the world No 6 fell short of claiming the ‘Sunshine Double’ by triumphing in the Miami Open as he was downed by eventual champion John Isner in the semi-finals.

Yet Del Potro’s incredible resurgence, having slipped as low as No 1,045 in the ATP rankings in 2016 after a lengthy absence followed surgeries on his left and right wrists, earned him huge acclaim over in the United States.

Del Potro – who even contemplated retirement a couple of years ago – had the stronger support in Miami even though American Isner was playing in front of his own fans as the 29-year-old played some of his explosive best tennis.

And the big-serving Argentine – whose exhaustion caught up with him against Isner having embarked on a taxing schedule over the past month – will hope to continue such performances when he returns to the circuit next month.

At least that is the expectation, according to Croft.

She said: “Del Potro has been the revelation during this hard court run.

“Everyone is marvelling at how he has recovered after he dropped to an all-time low emotionally and physically.

“I think he just ran out of steam in Miami. He has gained enormous respect from his fellow players.

“I think a lot of people are now looking at him to really kick on and take his tennis to another level.”

Del Potro has confirmed he will reduce the intensity of his clay-court season in order to rest up for the season’s second Grand Slam, the French Open – which starts at the end of May.

The 2009 US Open will play at most one event before Roland Garros as he looks to maintain his freshness to challenge Rafael Nadal in Paris.

Miami Open 2018: Juan Martin del Potro already thinking beyond tournament https://briefnews.eu/miami-open-2018-juan-martin-del-potro-already-thinking-beyond-tournament/ https://briefnews.eu/miami-open-2018-juan-martin-del-potro-already-thinking-beyond-tournament/#respond Tue, 27 Mar 2018 17:21:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/miami-open-2018-juan-martin-del-potro-already-thinking-beyond-tournament/

The Argentinian has enjoyed a fruitful start to 2018, winning two tournaments so far.

Del Potro picked up the Mexican Open in February before ending Roger Federer’s unbeaten run at the Indian Wells Masters.

The 29-year-old is now hot-favourite to win the Miami Open this week.

But Del Potro is already thinking beyond his time in Florida.

And the world No 6 admits he wants to be in top shape for the French Open in May.

“My body has started to feel tight because of all my success,” he said.

“But I’m enjoying a lot playing this tournament.

“I would like to stay longer because it’s a special tournament for me.

“I don’t like too much the tournaments on clay, so maybe I quit few tournaments from the start of the season, of the clay season.

“I will try to be 100 per cent for French Open.

“Maybe some tournaments before the French.”

Del Potro is preparing to take on Filip Krajinovic in Miami this evening.

A win would see him take on either Jeremy Chardy or Milos Raonic in the quarter-final.

Miami Open: Juan Martin del Potro can match Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic record https://briefnews.eu/miami-open-juan-martin-del-potro-can-match-roger-federer-and-novak-djokovic-record/ https://briefnews.eu/miami-open-juan-martin-del-potro-can-match-roger-federer-and-novak-djokovic-record/#respond Thu, 22 Mar 2018 08:02:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/miami-open-juan-martin-del-potro-can-match-roger-federer-and-novak-djokovic-record/

The Argentinian recently landed the Indian Wells Masters in style, beating Roger Federer in three sets.

And Del Potro is having a stellar year so far after also winning the Mexican Open last month.

The 29-year-old has returned to the top six of the ATP tennis rankings in recent months.

And Del Potro can join legends such as Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic if he is successful in America.

If the world No 6 wins his third tournament of the year this week, he will become only the 11th tennis star to win the ‘Sunshine Double’ in the same year.

This feat is accomplished by winning both the Indian Wells and Miami Open.

Federer achieved the record in 2005 and 2006.

While Djokjovic won both events in 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

But Del Potro isn’t currently worrying about future tournaments.

“I’m not thinking too much. I’m just enjoying the moment that I am living,” he said.

“I know what I have been through to get to this time and this place and this ranking.

“I am still calm.

“It will be my fourth tournament in a row.

“I’m tired, and mentally and physically it’s not easy to deal with all of these emotions.

“But then I will have a break, I will see what tournament we play on clay, because my body feels that surface, and I want to stay healthy during the whole season.

“That’s my biggest goal.”

Del Potro, who has bounced back from a series of wrist injuries, clinched his first Masters title after winning an epic three-setter 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.

Federer, who recorded his best ever start to a season when he clinched his 17th straight win in the semi-final against Borna Coric, wasted three Championship points.

But the Swiss legend had nothing but praise for his opponent after letting the result sink in.

“What a battle today,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Congrats on a fantastic tournament and match, @delpotrojuan.”

The love in between the two players started during ’s continued impact on the game of tennis.

“I’m still shaking, I think this is the worst part for me,” he said.

“First of all I want to congratulate Roger to a great week and great success in this historical year.

“You’re making history and I’m so happy to be just behind you, seeing what you do.

“It’s amazing for our sport and for the life so thank you very much.”

In his loser’s speech, Federer told Del Potro to “enjoy the moment” after his struggles with injury.

“Juan Martin well played today,” the 36-year-old said. “It was a tough match, but well done you deserve it.

“There was not much between us, but you deserved it.

“Well done and enjoy the moment.”

The Swiss master is 17-0 for 2018 so far and has picked up the Australian Open and Rotterdam Open crowns.

At 36, Federer is putting in the best performances of his career and faces an opponent in Juan Martin del Potro who has struggled against the veteran in the past.

Federer is the favourite heading into this clash but Del Potro is not a man to be ignored.

Follow the action LIVE with Express Sport tonight as Federer goes for a 98th career title.

ROGER FEDERER VS JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO LIVE

[final scheduled for 8pm]

First set: Federer 2-1 Del Potro

Roger Federer’s fitness was called into question before today’s showdown.

But the Swiss star looks in fine shape out there.

He goes 30-0 up on Del Potro’s serve but the Argentine managed to battle his way back to claim the game.

At 30-30 in the third game, Federer then produces a sublime forehand. He closes the game out as Del Potro hits into the net.

And we’re off!

Roger Federer vs Juan Martin del Potro is LIVE.

Still nearly there

Bit of a delay but Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro will kick off any minute now.

Both men are warming up.

Nearly there

Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro are about to walk out on court…

Federer reveals tactic

Roger Federer has revealed how he aims to topple Juan Martin Del Potro today.

“When you are confident and experienced and you have that combination, there’s no real need to panic,” he said.

“Because you can assess the situation quite easily. You’re understanding that the opponent is playing better. It’s breezy. It’s hard to play offence.

“But you need to have a very positive mindset.

“You need to be match-tough, you need to be confident, have experience, and I think I have a bit of all of that right now.”

Del Potro knows how to beat Federer

Juan Martin Del Potro thinks he can spring a major upset and beat Roger Federer today.

“We play great matches together,” he said about his rivalry with the Swiss.

“I love to play against him. He’s the favourite to win tomorrow, but I will try to do my best tennis.

“I beat him in the past, and I know how can I do to repeat that, but is not easy.

“It will be a good challenge to see how my level is against him.

“And then I think everybody was expecting that final, and I will try to enjoy the atmosphere on court.”

Juan Martin del Potro on Indian Wells weather

Juan Martin del Potro is desperate for the windy weather to die down before his final with Roger Federer.

“I would like to play in different conditions tomorrow,” Del Potro said after beating Milos Raonic in his semi-final in California.

“But I don’t know what the weather is going to be.

“Anyway, I play my game and don’t look too much at the conditions.”

Roger Federer previews the final

Roger Federer spoke after his semi-final win over Borna Coric, previewing today’s final.

“I put a lot of effort to get the record (17-0), now the focus is on the final,” Federer said.

“We have had a lot of great matches [with Del Potro].

“We know what the other would do and we are trying to stop each other.”

Roger Federer vs Juan Martin del Potro head to head

Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro have enjoyed a 24-match rivalry over their careers.

Federer dominates Del Potro in the form stats, having carved out a W18 L6 record over the years.

That would suggest Del Potro has a 25 per cent chance of winning this tie.

He last beat Federer back in the 2017 US Open, when the Argentine edged his rival 7-5 3-6 7-6(8) 6-4.

Del Potro also famously beat Federer in the 2009 US Open final.

But Federer has twice beaten Del Potro since Flushing Meadows last year, in the Shanghai Masters semi-finals and the Basel Open final.

Gruellingly for Del Potro, that last win was the third time Federer has beaten him in the Basel final.

Juan Martin del Potro admits Roger Federer relief but blasts Indian Wells Masters draw https://briefnews.eu/juan-martin-del-potro-admits-roger-federer-relief-but-blasts-indian-wells-masters-draw/ https://briefnews.eu/juan-martin-del-potro-admits-roger-federer-relief-but-blasts-indian-wells-masters-draw/#respond Thu, 08 Mar 2018 04:50:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/juan-martin-del-potro-admits-roger-federer-relief-but-blasts-indian-wells-masters-draw/

The Argentine is playing in his eighth BNP Paribas Open but he feels every year he is forced to play the world’s best players early on.

Del Porto is so annoyed with the competition that he no longer looks at the draw when it is made.

“Always. It doesn’t change. That’s the draw, what I expect for sure,” the world No 6 said when he found out his potential opponents.

The 29-year-old won the Mexican Open last week so heads into the Indian Well in top form.

He was grateful to be drawn in the opposite half to world No 1 Federer, however, he still has to face the likes of Marin Cilic, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev if he wishes to reach the latter stages.

But Del Porto insists he is confident ahead of the California event, which gets underway today.

“I’ve got much confidence,” he added.

“Looking forward to playing good tennis in this tournament.

“I beat top opponents during the Acapulco tournament, which means something good to myself and I’m very excited to keep playing at the same level as I did last week.

“If you want to win a title like this, you must play good tennis and beat many other good players, too, and that’s my biggest goal.

“So I need to go step-by-step, match-by-match and see how far can I go.”
