Allie Dunnington

December 14, 2018

As one of the first tourists allowed to travel on an overnight sleeper through a remote part of North Korea, Allie Dunnington reports on how things have changed since she last visited a decade ago.

I don’t agree with boycotting countries. They never harm the regime, but hurt the people. That’s why I’m here, on Kim Jong-un’s ‘Orient Express’ in North Korea.

In this country led by a man who’s committed all but one of the 11 crimes against humanity, a country whose image is that of an evil, ruthless and unforgiving regime, I want to see for myself what life in the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) might be like. And what better way than traveling on a sedately moving North Korean train?

This journey will take me and my fellow travelers from the scenic eastern coastline northwards to the industrial city of Chongjin near the Russian border. We’re the first tourists ever allowed to travel on an overnight sleeper and to this remote part of North Korea. Carefully guarded by our two young North Korean guides, Mr Pak and Ms Kim, we’re given our first instructions: “You must always speak respectfully of our Dear Leader, Kim Jong-un. You can take photos while the train is moving, but please not in the stations. You must never walk alone. We are responsible for your safety and have to look after you”.

The next morning, we step outside to a view of the sea and tiny islands. Once an important trade port with daily ferries to Japan, a turbulent, violent past has stopped most of Wonsan’s international exchange: “We were invaded by the Mongolians, Jurchens and Chinese,” explains Ms Kim, “then the Japanese took over from 1910-1945. After this, the Imperialists [she means America] wanted to take our country. But our revolutionary army under the great leadership of our President Kim Il-sung defended our nation.”

An armistice was signed on July 27th 1953 between the DPRK, the UN South and North Korea, but after 65 years, there’s still no formal peace treaty. The Kims always had their country under tight control: Rights such as ‘freedom of speech or movement‘ may be in the constitution, but they don’t de facto exist.

It’s the government who decides what’s allowed or not, down to hairstyles. Any wrong-doing and you could end up in a prison or endure a lifetime of forced labor—and this can affect the wider family. Those who safely leave for China or South Korea continue to worry for families and friends who may be punished instead.

Next stop: Hamhung on the north-eastern coast. It’s a lesson in chemistry while holding our breaths, thanks to the noxious smell in one of the DPRK’s largest fertilizer plants, followed by a refreshing if freezing-cold swim in Korea’s East Sea and an unexpected clam barbecue beach party with our guides.

It’s welcome respite before a long stint on the train the next day. Soon, we are only 200 kilometers from the Russian border. Mr Pak puts on a stern face: “We are now entering Chongjin,” he tells us. “It is the third-largest city and was the main industrial hub for iron and steel production. We have worked very hard to get permission for you to visit, so please stick to our rules!”

I feel his concern and worry. Misbehavior reflects badly on guides and tour operators: there may be an inquiry, penalties or, worst-case scenario, accusations of being ‘Western collaborators’. With tourism in its infancy, visitors are even asked to sign a form that we will comply with the rules.

Trump praises Kim Jong-un’s leadership, wants Americans to stand to attention for him too https://briefnews.eu/trump-praises-kim-jong-uns-leadership-wants-americans-to-stand-to-attention-for-him-too/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-praises-kim-jong-uns-leadership-wants-americans-to-stand-to-attention-for-him-too/#respond Fri, 15 Jun 2018 15:27:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-praises-kim-jong-uns-leadership-wants-americans-to-stand-to-attention-for-him-too/ US President Donald Trump spoke in admiring terms about North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, praising Kim’s ability to get his people to “sit up at attention,” and wishing he could do the same.

“He’s the head of a country, and I mean he’s the strong head,” Trump said. “He speaks and his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the same.”

Twitter instantly reacted to Trump’s statement, which some of his opponents in the #resistance viewed as proof of his dictatorial ambitions.

The president was speaking to Fox News in an impromptu interview Friday morning, during which he unloaded on the FBI, China’s trade policy, and former President Barack Obama’s handling of North Korea.

“He was ready to go to war with North Korea,” Trump said, speaking about Obama. “I asked him, ‘have you spoken to him [Kim]?’ He goes ‘no’. I said, ‘do you think it would be a good thing to speak to him maybe?”

Trump talked up his achievements at this week’s Singapore summit with Kim, which resulted in the signing of a historic agreement between the two leaders. However, Trump’s critics have called the US’ suspension of military exercises with South Korea in exchange for a vague commitment by Kim to denuclearize an extreme concession to the dictator.

“It’s funny when you see the fake news… we signed an agreement where we get everything, but they say ‘Trump lost because he agreed to meet,” he said. “Of course you got to agree to meet. If you don’t agree to meet you’re going to have nuclear war.”

After his Fox News interview, Trump glossed over Kim’s abysmal human rights record, telling a reporter that he met with Kim because “I don’t want to see a nuclear weapon destroy you and your family.”

Part of Trump’s agreement with Kim involves the repatriation of the bodies of several thousand US servicemen, lying in North Korea since the Korean War was put on hold by ceasefire in 1953, a point that the president talked up several times on Friday. The president also touted North Korea’s demolition of its nuclear test site at Punggye-ri, its suspension of ballistic missile tests, and its release of three US hostages as victories for the US.

While Kim’s end of the bargain (a commitment to denuclearization) was vague, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday that the US hopes to achieve “major” nuclear disarmament within 2.5 years. After the Singapore summit, Pompeo met with Asian leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, to secure support for disarming Pyongyang and to coordinate ongoing sanctions against the Kim regime.

Further discussions between the Trump administration and the Kim regime will take place, but Trump was vague when asked about a potential White House visit from Kim.

“It could happen,” the president said. “Yeah, I would have him. I think it’s something that could happen.”

S. Korea allocates budget for ‘decapitation unit’ targeting Kim Jong-un’s government https://briefnews.eu/s-korea-allocates-budget-for-decapitation-unit-targeting-kim-jong-uns-government/ https://briefnews.eu/s-korea-allocates-budget-for-decapitation-unit-targeting-kim-jong-uns-government/#respond Fri, 08 Dec 2017 01:14:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/s-korea-allocates-budget-for-decapitation-unit-targeting-kim-jong-uns-government/

The South Korean government has allocated the first $ 310,000 to its newly created “decapitation unit,” which, in the event of war with Pyongyang, will be tasked with neutralizing its leadership and sabotaging crucial military facilities, local media report.

The ministry announced the first tranche of 340 million won ($ 310,000) Wednesday, South Korean media reported citing defense ministry sources. This sum, however, is just a fraction of the nearly $ 40 billion budget awarded to the ministry for 2018.

“The money will be spent on purchasing equipment for the special forces… The equipment includes suicide drones, surveillance drones and grenade machine guns,” a defense ministry official told the Korea Herald on condition of anonymity. Meanwhile, another official cited by Yonhap said the budget “will be used for such weapons as sub-machine guns for special operation purposes and drones.”

The ministry will reportedly be increasing the outfit’s budget as needed, with up to $ 23.7mn expected to be spent on boosting its combat power.

The so-called “decapitation unit” was established by the South Korean military under its Special Warfare Command on December 1. The team comprises roughly 1,000 highly-trained professionals and is modeled on the US Army Rangers, Delta Force, SEAL Team Six and the Green Berets.

Despite its somewhat misleading nickname, the decapitation unit is not necessarily tasked with assassinating North Korea’s leader himself. Instead, a source told the Korea Times following the launch, the elite squad’s mission will be to neutralize key government figures, or carry out an attack on heavily defended nuclear and missile facilities.

The launch came just days after Pyongyang’s ballistic missile launch on November 29. However, South Korean Defense Minister Song Young-Moo first referred to the unit’s creation in September, following Pyongyang’s sixth nuclear test.

Although the official launch has taken place and a budget awarded, the division will take time to become fully operational, according to experts cited by the Korea Herald. This is reportedly because it currently lacks some crucial assets, such as low-flying aircraft capable of delivering and deploying special warfare teams deep into North Korean territory.

North Korea: Illegal photos show what it’s like to live under Kim Jong-un’s rule https://briefnews.eu/north-korea-illegal-photos-show-what-its-like-to-live-under-kim-jong-uns-rule/ https://briefnews.eu/north-korea-illegal-photos-show-what-its-like-to-live-under-kim-jong-uns-rule/#respond Wed, 29 Nov 2017 15:49:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/north-korea-illegal-photos-show-what-its-like-to-live-under-kim-jong-uns-rule/

North Korea dictator Kim Jong-Un launched the sixth nuclear test missile since September last night.

The conflict between North Korea and America is growing steadily more worrying, as Trump has added North Korea to the US list of nations who sanction terrorism.

A state television broadcast a photo of Kim’s sign order, which read: “Test launch is approved. Taking place at the daybreak of November 29! Fire with courage for the party and country!”

US Defence Secretary James Mattis has since warned the nation is moving closer to a weapon that could cause grave danger to America.

But what is life really like living in North Korea?

Most photography is strictly prohibited in North Korea for tourists who visit there, meaning it is hard to get a clear picture of what life there is like.

However, photos by Imgur user CaptainBaps, which he somehow took under the heavily restricted regime, show photos from the capital Pyongyang.

The user wrote: “The first thing to clarify is that you can’t just go backpacking in North Korea. You have to go on an organised tour group.”

The photos themselves reflect the strict regime North Koreans and tourists alike are made to adhere to.

An internet cafe shows a row of women using the web, no doubt with a huge number of restricted sites, alongside a solder.

A picture of a river in North Korea, showing the sites of buildings alongside, shows no sign of advertising or lights in the region.

The riverside itself looks barren and empty: a far cry from a bustling area like London’s Southbank.

A view from a plane shows a barren landscape with grey, uniform houses and miles of empty field.

The plane photo is captioned: “You aren’t really allowed to take pictures from the plane so this was the last one I took seconds before we landed.”

Also in the photo collection there is a classroom with a photo of the dictator Kim Jong Un on the wall.

CaptainBaps also writes that he feels some scenes are faked for the benefit of tourists, masking the true reality of some parts of North Korea life.

“The whole time you are in DPRK you are constantly wondering, ‘Is this real?’ ‘Is this normally like this or just a show for tourists?'”

Nuclear bunker PICTURED: Shelter built to withstand war with Kim Jong-un’s North Korea https://briefnews.eu/nuclear-bunker-pictured-shelter-built-to-withstand-war-with-kim-jong-uns-north-korea/ https://briefnews.eu/nuclear-bunker-pictured-shelter-built-to-withstand-war-with-kim-jong-uns-north-korea/#respond Wed, 26 Apr 2017 16:34:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nuclear-bunker-pictured-shelter-built-to-withstand-war-with-kim-jong-uns-north-korea/

CEO of Shelter Co. Seiichiro Nishimoto let photographers into his nuclear bomb to reveal what to expect inside.

Shelter Co., a small Japanese company headed by Seiichiro, specialises in building nuclear shelters. The company revealed orders for the bomb-proof huts have gone through the roof as terrified civilians prepare for the worst.

And to guarantee his own safety Seiichiro has built his own nuclear bunker beneath his house in Osaka.

The bunker is a model for his company and has been fitted out with everything you could possible need to ensure survival – including a radiation-blocking air purifier in case of a power outage, gas masks, a blast door, emergency foods, and even palm tree wallpaper.

Seiichiro told Japan Today his business had been booming.

He said: “Over the past month, we’ve received over 200 requests for information.

“Although up to now we’ve sod about five or six shelters a year, in April alone we’ve sold eight so far. And our answerphone’s recorded over 100 inquiries. We can’t handle them all.”

There’s also been a sharp change in his customer base.

He added: “Up to now we dealt mainly with affluent people, like medical doctors, and fans of the science fiction magazine ‘MU’. But these days we’re fielding inquiries from people of all ages and occupations. I’ve been in the fallout shelter business for going on 55 years now, and this is a first.”

Last month, three North Korean missiles fell within Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

Tokyo has now encouraged local governments to carry out evacuation drills in preparation for an attack, heightening a sense of urgency among the public.

Since then, companies, alongside Seiichiro’s, selling bomb shelters and other civilian war equipment have recorded a huge increase in sales.

Oribe Seiki Seisakusho, based in Kobe, has sold out of 50 Swiss-made air purifiers, which are said to keep out radiation and poisonous gas.

These purifiers cost £4,390 while shelters cost an eye-watering £170,000 to build.

They can protect 13 people and survive huge blasts.

Nuclear war is a terrifying prospect, one that any rational person would hope to avoid. Express.co.uk has mapped the UK’s nuclear bunkers in the case of World War 3.

So where are the UK’s nuclear bunkers?

Malaysia says it needs kin’s DNA before releasing Kim Jong-Un’s half-brother’s body https://briefnews.eu/malaysia-says-it-needs-kins-dna-before-releasing-kim-jong-uns-half-brothers-body/ https://briefnews.eu/malaysia-says-it-needs-kins-dna-before-releasing-kim-jong-uns-half-brothers-body/#respond Fri, 17 Feb 2017 11:43:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/malaysia-says-it-needs-kins-dna-before-releasing-kim-jong-uns-half-brothers-body/ Kim Jong namAP Photo/JoongAng Sunday via JoongAng Ilbo, Shin In-seop

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Malaysian police said on Friday it will not release the body of the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un until it receives DNA samples from his next-of-kin.

Police are investigating the murder of Kim Jong Nam, the eldest son of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

Kim, 46, died on Monday after being assaulted at Kuala Lumpur International Airport with what was thought to be a fast acting poison.

Two female suspects, one an Indonesian and the other carrying Vietnamese travel documents, have been arrested. A Malaysian man has also been detained to help with inquiries.

Police are still hunting four men believed to have been accomplices in Kim’s murder.

South Korea’s spy agency told lawmakers in Seoul that it believed North Korean agents had killed Kim, acting on orders from North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un. U.S. officials told Reuters they also believed North Korean agents were responsible.

The North Korean embassy officially requested on Thursday, for the body of Kim Jong Nam to be released by Malaysia, having earlier tried in vain to persuade Malaysian authorities not to carry out an autopsy.

Selangor state police chief Abdul Samah Mat told Reuters the body would not be released until next-of-kin DNA had been obtained to confirm the identity of the victim.

“We are still waiting for the next of kin application, we have not received it yet. We have only received the application from the North Korean embassy yesterday,” the police chief said. “We need to collect DNA samples from the next-of-kin in order to get conclusive evidence on the victim’s identity.”

North Korea has made no public reference to Kim Jong Nam‘s death, and calls to the embassy in Malaysia were unanswered.

Kim Jong Nam had spoken out publicly against his family’s dynastic control of the isolated, nuclear-armed North Korea.

South Korea’s intelligence agency told lawmakers in Seoul that Kim had been living with his second wife in the Chinese territory of Macau, where he received China’s protection.

He had been at the airport to catch a flight to Macau when he was killed.

Cornelia Charito Siricord, director of forensics within the science ministry, told Reuters that an analysis was being carried out on samples taken from the body to help the police establish the cause of death.

  • Kim Jong-Nam’s death described as “brutal and inhuman” by South Korea.
  • It is thought Kim Jong-Un’s half-brother was stabbed with poison-tipped needles or had chemicals sprayed in his face.

SEOUL (AFP) – The assassination of the North Korean leader’s half-brother illustrates the “brutal and inhuman” nature of the regime in Pyongyang, Seoul said Wednesday after Kim Jong-Nam was reportedly killed in Malaysia by female agents.

Two women are believed to have used some kind of poison for the Cold War-style killing, with reports from Malaysia and South Korea suggesting Kim Jong-Nam had been stabbed with poison-tipped needles or had chemicals sprayed in his face.

“He told the receptionist at the departure hall that someone had grabbed his face from behind and splashed some liquid on him,” Selangor state’s criminal investigation chief Fadzil Ahmat was reported as saying by Malaysia’s The Star newspaper.

“He asked for help and was immediately sent to the airport’s clinic. At this point, he was experiencing headache and was on the verge of passing out,” said Fadzil.

“At the clinic, the victim experienced a mild seizure. He was put into an ambulance and was being taken to the Putrajaya Hospital when he was pronounced dead.”

South Korean reports had earlier suggested the two female assassins had used poison-tipped needles during the killing, before fleeing in a taxi.

A post mortem will be carried out later in Malaysia.

Kim had at one time been set to assume the leadership of his isolated country, but fell out of favour after an embarrassing attempt to get into Japan on a fake passport in 2001.

He has since lived in exile, mostly in the gambling haven of Macau, but he has also been spotted in other Asian countries and there have been reports of his playboy lifestyle.

Kim, 45, is believed to have been in Malaysia on a passport bearing the name Kim Chol, a known alias, according to South Korean media.

But Seoul on Wednesday confirmed that the dead man was a member of the Kim dynasty.

“Our government is certain that the murdered man is Kim Jong-Nam,” said Chung Joon-Hee, a spokesman for Seoul’s unification ministry that handles inter-Korea affairs.

“If confirmed, the murder of Kim Jong-Nam would be an example that shows the brutality and inhumane nature of the North Korean regime,” acting leader Hwang Kyo-Ahn told a meeting of top security officials earlier, according to his spokesman.

“We’re taking this incident very seriously and we’re keeping close tabs on the North”, Hwang said.

Kim’s killing is thought to be the highest-profile death under the Jong-Un regime since the execution of the leader’s uncle, Jang Song-Thaek, in December 2013.

Jong-Un has been trying to strengthen his grip on power in the face of growing international pressure over his country’s nuclear and missile programmes, and regular reports have emerged on purges and executions.

Jong-Nam, known as an advocate of reform in the North, once told a Japanese newspaper that he opposed his country’s dynastic system of power.

Cheong Seong-Jang, senior researcher at Seoul’s Sejong Institute think-tank, said Jong-Nam had been living in near-exile so it was unlikely that Jong-Un saw him as a potential competitor for power.

“But if Jong-Nam committed an act to damage Jong-Un’s authority, I think it’s possible that the Reconnaissance General Bureau may have directly conducted the assassination under the orders of Jong-Un since it has been in charge of closely watching Jong-Nam,” he said.

SEOUL/KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – The half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been killed in Malaysia, the Yonhap News Agency and other South Korean media outlets reported on Tuesday, citing unidentified sources.

Yonhap, citing a South Korean government source, said Kim Jong Nam was killed on Monday morning in Malaysia. It gave no more details.

TV Chosun, a cable television network, said separately that Kim was poisoned at Kuala Lumpur airport by two women believed to be North Korean operatives, who were at large, citing multiple South Korean government sources.

Malaysian police told Reuters an unidentified North Korean man died en route to hospital from a Kuala Lumpur airport. The police said the man’s identity had not been verified.
