Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” was a wonderful breath of fresh air — an original film with a stellar cast and a funny, engrossing mystery with twists and turns. It reminded us that movies could be, ya know, fun. Seemingly the moment the movie ended, audiences wanted more. Specifically, they wanted the return of Benoit Blanc, the gentleman sleuth with the deep-fried accent, played to perfection by Daniel Craig. Sure enough, Netflix came calling, plunking down a huge chunk of change for Johnson to make not one but two more Benoit Blanc movies. But could Johnson ever match the mystery magic he created in the first film?

The answer is a resounding yes. With “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” Johnson has brought back Blanc for an even bigger, funnier, twistier whodunnit. Not only does Johnson recapture what made the first flick so special, he actually outdoes himself. Yes, “Glass Onion” is even better than “Knives Out.” The key ingredient to that success is that Johnson doesn’t try to remake the first film. Yes, Benoit Blanc is once again knee-deep in a murder mystery and surrounded by a cast of suspects, but Johnson isn’t interested in giving us the same old same old. Instead, he goes bigger, building a complex mystery that towers over the first film’s crime.

But best of all, Johnson has ramped up the humor. “Knives Out” was plenty funny, but “Glass Onion” is loaded with huge belly-laugh moments and the types of ultra-clever jokes that will make you want to cheer. What I’m getting at here is that this Rian Johnson fellow is very good at making movies.

A New Cast Of Suspects

“Glass Onion” begins by introducing us to our new cast of characters/suspects. There’s high-strung Senate candidate Claire (Kathryn Hahn); immensely clueless model turned fashion designer Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson) and her assistant Peg (Jessica Henwick); Duke (Dave Bautista), a men’s rights activist with a huge online following; Duke’s girlfriend Whiskey (Madelyn Cline); and Lionel (Leslie Odom Jr.), a scientist who works for a billion-dollar tech company. The tech company is owned by billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton), who is connected to all of these characters. And then there’s Andi (Janelle Monáe), Miles’ former business partner who had a falling out with Miles that resulted in a nasty court case.

All of these characters are invited to Miles’ private island for a weekend getaway. This is something he does with this group of friends every year, and this year, he wants to stage a murder mystery party. And who better to invite along than Benoit Blanc? Johnson plops the film firmly in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Blanc, who has been sheltering in place (remember when we did that?) has grown restless. He needs a case, and he jumps at the chance of heading to Mile’s island, even if it’s for a fake murder.

You can probably guess where this is going: the fake murder turns into a real one. But who gets bumped off, and how, I shall not say. The joys of “Glass Onion” involve the plot twists and shocking-but-hilarious revelations Johnson keeps throwing at us at breakneck speed. Every scene is loaded with lightning-sharp wit coupled with a genuinely engrossing mystery. Like Blanc, we’re hooked on the idea of solving this mystery.

Daniel Craig’s Best Performance Yet

In addition to the successful humor, Johnson also creates memorable set pieces that demand to be seen on the big screen. At one point, the lights go out at Miles’ massive compound, with a nearby lighthouse flashing occasional beams of light in the darkness as various characters scramble about.

Speaking of those characters, one of the draws of “Knives Out” was the ensemble cast, with Ana de Armas being a particular standout. But while the cast of that first film was swell, some of the characters felt undercooked or underused. With “Glass Onion,” Johnson remedies that by giving everyone a moment to shine. Hahn is her usual wonderful self, chewing her dialogue with gusto. Monáe is a huge standout, with a particularly tricky role. But everyone around her is also firing on all cylinders. Norton is particularly grand as the billionaire, playing the character with just the right amount of smug self-righteousness. And Hudson garners huge laughs with her dimwitted character. But make no mistake: this is Daniel Craig’s movie.

It might seem odd to claim that Craig’s best performance is in a “Knives Out” sequel; in fact, you might consider that hyperbole. But I stick by it. I have always enjoyed Craig’s work, but I have never enjoyed him as much as I did here. Blanc is even funnier this time around, and Johnson allows Craig to engage in some brief but uproarious slapstick. Forget James Bond — this was the role Craig was born to play. I can’t wait to see what case Benoit Blanc gets mixed up in next.

The UK has a new Prime Minister — meet Liz Truss, the tax-cutting Brexit convert taking over from Boris Johnson https://briefnews.eu/the-uk-has-a-new-prime-minister-meet-liz-truss-the-tax-cutting-brexit-convert-taking-over-from-boris-johnson/ https://briefnews.eu/the-uk-has-a-new-prime-minister-meet-liz-truss-the-tax-cutting-brexit-convert-taking-over-from-boris-johnson/#respond Mon, 05 Sep 2022 11:59:05 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-uk-has-a-new-prime-minister-meet-liz-truss-the-tax-cutting-brexit-convert-taking-over-from-boris-johnson/ Liz Truss
Liz Truss during the 2022 leadership campaign.

  • Liz Truss has been named the new prime minister of the UK in the wake of Boris Johnson quitting.
  • Truss, a Johnson loyalist, won a five-week campaign and is seen as offering continuity with Johnson.
  • Truss is a prominent Brexit supporter, despite once opposing it, and has pledged sweeping tax cuts.

Liz Truss has been named the new Conservative leader after a fierce leadership battle following Boris Johnson's resignation on July 7. The victory also makes her the new prime minister, due to take over on Tuesday.

Johnson was forced to step down after a string of scandals — including his handling of an accusation of sexual assault against one of his senior MP's and attending parties during the COVID-19 lockdowns — sparked the resignation of more than 60 members of his government in three days.

An ally of Johnson, Truss has often been described as the continuity candidate – but who is she, and what can we expect from her premiership?

Who is Liz Truss?

Born in Oxford, England, in 1975, Truss has been MP for West Norfolk since 2010, a minister for 10 years and a cabinet minister for eight. It makes her one of the most experienced operators in the UK's government.

Before being named Conservative leader, she was foreign secretary. Truss has also been trade secretary, women and equalities minister and environment secretary. She was the first woman to be Lord Chancellor and justice secretary.

During the 2016 EU referendum, Truss backed the Remain side, but later repositioned herself as an ardent Brexiteer to take positions more hardline than some who backed Brexit from the start, including Rishi Sunak, her rival for the leadership.

Truss also started out life supporting a different political party. As a student, she was a Liberal Democrat – the third-largest and most centrist party in the UK.

Unlike her predecessor, Truss attended a state-funded school, Roundhay, which she has criticised for having "let down" pupils. She went on to study Politics, Philosophy, and Economics at Oxford — a degree common to many in Britain's political elite.

What does Truss believe?

Her switch from the Lib Dems to Tories, and Remain to Leave has led some critics to suggest Truss is something of a shape-shifter.

She certainly hasn't shied away from controversy. A video of a young Liz Truss advocating for the abolition of the British monarchy — a fringe position she long since abandoned — went viral during her campaign.

More recently, Truss has placed herself on the right of the party, criticising "fashionable" policies on race, sexuality, and gender.

While Johnson attempted to emulate wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill, Truss has more often looked to Margaret Thatcher for inspiration, vowing not to give "handouts" but instead cut taxes in response to the growing economic crisis in the UK, which is facing high inflation and soaring energy costs.

As foreign secretary, she met with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov at the beginning of February as nations including the UK warned that the invasion of Ukraine was increasingly inevitable. It resulted in a frosty press conference with Lavrov complaining it was a conversation of "the mute with the deaf".

It later transpired that Truss insisted on visiting Russia against official advice. "The head of the Russia desk told her not to go, the head of security told her not to go," an official told The Times of London.

Within Westminster, Truss has gained a certain notoriety for her photoshoots including a Thatcher-esque tank ride, flying Britain's Union Jack flag (on an umbrella) on overseas trips, and a series of glossy shots for an interview with the Mail on Sunday.

She is also (in)famous for her stilted delivery during speeches, as shown in the compilation video below from London's Evening Standard newspaper.

A particularly awkward speech in 2014 resulted in memes that have followed her ever since, mostly focused on moments where Truss made an uncomfortable pause boasting of opening access to "new pork markets" in China and branding as "a disgrace" the extent to which Britons eat foreign instead of British cheese.

A 2021 profile by Politico noted that Truss had always been a nervous public speaker, but worked on honing her delivery after getting more prominent jobs.

During the five-week campaign to win the Conservative leadership, Truss stuck to her guns on tax, promising to reverse the 1.25% rise in National Insurance tax introduced by rival Rishi Sunak.

She also pledged not to introduce any new taxes and said she would scrap a planned 6% rise in corporation taxes.

Although this has been criticised as regressive, helping the richer in society more, Truss told the BBC it was fair because the richest paid more tax to begin with.

"Of course, there are some people who don't pay tax at all," she said on Sunday. "But to look at everything through the lens of redistribution I believe is wrong because what I'm about is about growing the economy and growing the economy benefits everybody."

However, on Monday morning – hours before she was confirmed as the new party leader  – The Daily Telegraph reported she was now considering freezing energy bills to avoid "Armageddon".

British Foreign Secretary and Conservative leadership candidate Liz Truss speaks with a worker as she attends a Conservative Party leadership campaign event at Condimentum Ltd at the Food Enterprise Park on August 25, 2022 in Norwich, England.
Liz Truss speaks with a worker as she attends a Conservative Party leadership campaign event at Condimentum Ltd at the Food Enterprise Park on August 25, 2022 in Norwich, England.

Truss has adopted a similar approach to Johnson when it comes to Europe and Brexit.

As foreign secretary Truss has threatened to trigger Article 16 over the Northern Ireland Protocol, which unionists claim is damaging the UK's integrity. During the campaign, sources suggested she could do this within days of becoming prime minister.

Asked whether French President Emmanuel Macron was a friend or foe to the British state, Truss replied "the jury is out". This earned her some criticism, although Macron appeared to make light of it, leaving Johnson to insist that Macron was a "tres bon buddy".

While she appears aligned with Johnson on Brexit, one area where the two disagree is the environment. Truss has called solar panels as "a blight on the landscape," and plans to cut the green levy, a portion of energy bills that goes towards social and environmental projects.

Who did she defeat?

Conservative leadership hopefuls Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak appear together at the end of the final Tory leadership hustings at Wembley Arena on August 31, 2022 in London, England.
Conservative leadership hopefuls Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak appear together at the end of the final Tory leadership hustings at Wembley Arena on August 31, 2022 in London, England.

Former chancellor Rishi Sunak was the second cabinet member to resign when Boris Johnson was Prime Minister and thus played a huge role in triggering the leadership election.

The two differed on their economic pledges, leading to some fiery moments in the campaign and making it unlikely he will hold a government post under the Truss administration.

While Truss pledged to reduce taxes immediately, Sunak wanted to look to do this after the UK had "gripped inflation."

Sunak led the parliamentary stage of the contest, winning the backing of a majority of Conservative MPs, but lost that edge as the race continued, eventually polling more than 30 points behind Truss in the last few weeks.

A prominent Tory donor warned that Britain will be seen as racist for not selecting Sunak, who would have been the UK's first non-white prime minister had he won.

What happens now?

While Truss has been named as Conservative party leader, she must wait another day before officially becoming prime minister.

Truss becomes prime minister on Tuesday when she will travel to meet the Queen at Balmoral in Scotland. It is the first time the Queen has handed over power outside of London, owing to concerns about the 96-year old monarch's mobility.

Johnson is due to first inform the Queen of his resignation formally and become a backbench MP.

Truss will then announce her new Cabinet, with changes expected as early as Tuesday evening. Allies including Kwasi Kwarteng, James Cleverly and Therese Coffey are all likely to be rewarded with big new jobs while Dominic Raab, Michael Gove, Steve Barclay and Sunak, are likely to lose out.

Per reports in UK outlets, Truss is likely to oversee an emergency Budget, with a possible date of September 21.

Truss does not have to call a General Election and can hypothetically continue with the parliamentary majority which Johnson won until January 2025. But polls suggest Tory popularity is declining.

With a looming economic and energy crisis, as well as the ongoing war in Ukraine and the never-ending fall-out from Brexit, the new prime minister has a mammoth task ahead of her.

Grand Army Premiere: Maliq Johnson on the Netflix Drama’s ‘Authentic’ Look at Issues Facing Black Teens in America https://briefnews.eu/grand-army-premiere-maliq-johnson-on-the-netflix-dramas-authentic-look-at-issues-facing-black-teens-in-america/ https://briefnews.eu/grand-army-premiere-maliq-johnson-on-the-netflix-dramas-authentic-look-at-issues-facing-black-teens-in-america/#respond Sat, 17 Oct 2020 08:32:40 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/grand-army-premiere-maliq-johnson-on-the-netflix-dramas-authentic-look-at-issues-facing-black-teens-in-america/

Warning: This interview contains mild spoilers from the premiere of Netflix’s Grand Army.

Netflix’s newest teen addiction is no Riverdale — and that’s a very good thing.

Loosely based on a 2013 play by series creator Katie Cappiello, Grand Army follows five diverse students at a public high school in Brooklyn. The series, which dropped its first nine episodes on Friday, offers an unflinching look at the experiences of Gen Zers in America, including some challenges that more commonly face teens of color.

“Katie is really big on making it as authentic as possible,” Maliq Johnson, who plays sophomore musician Jayson Jackson, tells TVLine. “If there was a scenario where we felt like things would have gone differently for us in our own lives, she was very open to letting us tell her that. And if there was a way she could do it, she would put it in the show.”

Compared to some of his fellow classmates — who immediately find themselves tackling issues surrounding sexual identity, poverty and slut-shaming — Jay’s life feels comfortably undramatic from the outset. “He’s a goofball and he can be mischievous, but he doesn’t do anything with bad intentions,” Johnson says. “He’s a good kid.”

Unfortunately, like so many young Black men, Jay’s spirit is tested by a series of tragic circumstances. “Jay isn’t really aware of his responsibilities, and how different it is for him as a Black man in America… until something happens on the show that forces him to pay attention to his Blackness,” he teases.

Johnson continues, “I was raised with my parents telling me, ‘You’re a Black man. It’s different for you. If you get into a certain encounter, you have to think about how it’s going to be different for you, how the consequences are going to be more extreme. If something happens to you, it’s going to be hard to get a second chance.”

And this is just one example of the all-too-real problems tackled in Grand Army, whose first episode kicks off with a school-wide lockdown prompted by an incident of domestic terrorism nearby.

“Partly because of the virus and partly because he’s running out of friends,” the comedian continued.

Clearly finding Angus’ new segment amusing, she noted: “I’ve been looking forward to you doing that.”

The shut down didn’t come until the presenter had a general conversation with Angus, stating it must be a “great time” for stand-up comics to get material with so much happening in the news.

Knowing the actor had travelled to Leeds especially to appear on the show, Steph asked: “How was your first night in Leeds?”

Jokingly hitting back, he replied: “None of your business,” with his dry humour once again leaving her in tears of laughter.

Nicola Sturgeon accused of trying to ’embarrass’ Boris Johnson by setting COVID-19 agenda https://briefnews.eu/nicola-sturgeon-accused-of-trying-to-embarrass-boris-johnson-by-setting-covid-19-agenda/ https://briefnews.eu/nicola-sturgeon-accused-of-trying-to-embarrass-boris-johnson-by-setting-covid-19-agenda/#respond Tue, 01 Sep 2020 09:38:26 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/nicola-sturgeon-accused-of-trying-to-embarrass-boris-johnson-by-setting-covid-19-agenda/

Nicola Sturgeon has been accused of deliberately trying to cause the UK Government “maximum embarassment” by setting her own coronavirus agenda. The Scottish First Minister was confronted over her decision to part ways with Boris Johnson‘s plans by ITV host Lorraine. Ms Sturgeon insisted that the only thing driving her plans was keeping people as safe as possible.

The host asked: “It’s really interesting because you seem to be setting the agenda here.

“You were with the UK Government at first, and now not following their lead while they do screeching U-turns on masks, exams, school meals over the summer.

“Is that sort of the plan? To cause maximum embarassment to the UK Government?”

The First Minister denied the accusation and insisted that “nothing could be further from her mind”.

Sadiq Khan leaves GMB hosts speechless over Boris Johnson admission ‘Extraordinary!’ https://briefnews.eu/sadiq-khan-leaves-gmb-hosts-speechless-over-boris-johnson-admission-extraordinary/ https://briefnews.eu/sadiq-khan-leaves-gmb-hosts-speechless-over-boris-johnson-admission-extraordinary/#respond Tue, 14 Jul 2020 19:06:10 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/sadiq-khan-leaves-gmb-hosts-speechless-over-boris-johnson-admission-extraordinary/

Following their guest’s admission, Garraway remarked: “That is extraordinary,” before going on to ask why he thinks the Prime Minister hasn’t made contact with him.

Mr Khan replied: “I think it’s for the Prime Minister to explain why that is. I hope it’s not because he’s playing petty party politics.

“I put aside party differences to work with the Government,” he continued.

Express.co.uk have contacted a representative of Number 10 Downing Street for comment on Mr Khan’s claims.

Taking to Twitter, viewers were just as confused by the admission, with one writing: “Did I hear London Mayor Sadiq Khan correctly there – he hasn’t spoken to PM Boris Johnson since 10th May?? #GMB.”

Another added: “@SadiqKhan hasn’t spoke to @BorisJohnson since May. @fmwales included hasn’t spoke to him in March/May???? What are you doing Boris???? #GMB #Covid_19.”

Given the floor, Peston grilled the Prime Minister over the fact there had been calls for Mr Cummings to resign as he didn’t follow the UK Government guidelines.

The political journalist addressed how Mr Johnson’s chief aide seemed to have breached not one, but three of the lockdown rules.

These included leaving the house where someone who lives there has Covid-19 symptoms, spending hours in the same vicinity as someone who could be infected and travelling to a second home.

Just as he had started the briefing, the Prime Minister defended his colleague’s actions and as he went on to speak with another reporter, it was clear the ITV journalist was unimpressed with the answer.

‘The show’s gone downhill!’ Piers Morgan’s ‘attack’ on Boris Johnson loses GMB viewers https://briefnews.eu/the-shows-gone-downhill-piers-morgans-attack-on-boris-johnson-loses-gmb-viewers/ https://briefnews.eu/the-shows-gone-downhill-piers-morgans-attack-on-boris-johnson-loses-gmb-viewers/#respond Fri, 01 May 2020 00:45:41 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-shows-gone-downhill-piers-morgans-attack-on-boris-johnson-loses-gmb-viewers/

The leader of the Conservative Party was battling coronavirus in an intensive care unit just a few weeks ago, and just as he was about to return to work his partner, Carrie Symonds gave birth to their first baby together; a boy.

Downing Street released the news alongside an image of Johnson – which was taken at an unknown date – on what is presumed to be a staircase from the coveted house, looking extremely happy.

Morgan, who has been a regular criticiser of Johnson and his party on GMB wasted no time in discussing the Prime Minister’s facial expression.

Kicking off the show just after 6am, Morgan said: “I don’t want to rain on the happy parade of the Prime Minister, I really don’t.

“I think it would be churlish to do that when he’s just become a father again and Carrie Symonds has just had her first baby.

“They’ve both been through a lot – they’ve both had the virus, Boris nearly died and it must have been a very worrying few weeks at the late stage of pregnancy. So I wish them all the best,” he continued.

“But you can’t get away from this jarring sense of every front page of a very happy Boris Johnson bounding up the steps inside Downing Street, released by Downing Street.

“And many newspapers have used that picture alongside very bad headlines of the death toll in this country now accelerating to the second worst in the world.

“Yet again, I’ve turned off due to the incessant drivel spouting from Piers Morgan. We don’t want to hear his constant criticism of basically anything he disagrees with. Megan Markel, Boris Johnson ….government in general!!#GMB,” one wrote.

An alternative tweet read: “Criticising Boris for being happy at the birth of his child, this show has gone downhill!#GMB.”

A spokeswoman for the Prime Minister and his partner said both mother and baby are “doing very well”.

BBC reported Johnson is expected to take a “short period” of paternity leave at some point later this year, Downing Street said.

However, they also declined to say whether the baby was born prematurely, and did not provide details of the weight, timing, nature or location of the birth.

Piers Morgan rips into ‘disintegrating’ lockdown as Boris Johnson returns as PM https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-rips-into-disintegrating-lockdown-as-boris-johnson-returns-as-pm/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-rips-into-disintegrating-lockdown-as-boris-johnson-returns-as-pm/#respond Mon, 27 Apr 2020 07:42:37 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-rips-into-disintegrating-lockdown-as-boris-johnson-returns-as-pm/

The presenter has been outspoken about the necessity of lockdown measures in recent weeks.  Piers opened the morning news show on ITV by telling host Susanna Reid that he thinks the lockdown is falling apart.

He said: “Strange weekend- I went out a couple of times, Kensingston High Street absolutely rammed, cars everywhere, Holland Park was packed.

“The lockdown has unlocked, people have decided they’re just not going to do it and this is why I’m thrilled Boris Johnson is back at work.”

The Prime Minister is due to return after having three weeks off due to a battle with COVID-19.

But Piers was not full of praise about Mr Johnson’s return: “There’s a very good argument that with his lax activity before he got sick got us into this position.

“So forgive me if I just take a bit of a beat before I’m joining in the euphoria – I’m not euphoric about the way this lockdown is disintegrating.

“We’re in this ridiculous limbo where we’re not really sure what to do and there is a lack of leadership.”

Piers Morgan has also apologised to Ofcom after asking his fans to bombard the TV watchdog to support his “grilling” of Care Minister Helen Whately.

Mr Morgan tweeted: “Apparently nearly 2,000 people have now complained to Ofcom about me grilling Care minister Helen Whately too ‘unfairly’ when she couldn’t answer even basic questions.

“If you think I should continue grilling ministers in the way I’ve been doing, please tell Ofcom.

“Thanks.”

Lockdown measures were originally introduced on March 23 by Boris Johnson to stem the spread of COVID-19.

Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab has since extended the lockdown to May 7.

Mr Raab told Sky News: “If you look at the public mood, it is overwhelmingly that they are concerned that we might ease up too soon.

“If we started proposing one or other measure that subsequently, down the track, we found out we couldn’t implement you would be saying that we had jumped the gun.

“You would be criticising us for that and the public would be getting mixed messaging.”

Boris Johnson on the spot over lack of COVID-19 tests – ‘Germany doing 10 times more’ https://briefnews.eu/boris-johnson-on-the-spot-over-lack-of-covid-19-tests-germany-doing-10-times-more/ https://briefnews.eu/boris-johnson-on-the-spot-over-lack-of-covid-19-tests-germany-doing-10-times-more/#respond Wed, 01 Apr 2020 08:06:51 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/boris-johnson-on-the-spot-over-lack-of-covid-19-tests-germany-doing-10-times-more/

Boris Johnson pledged the NHS would receive an increasing number of coronavirus test kits to ensure patients suffering from symptoms and frontline medical staff are able to be tested for the deadly virus. While the number of tests conducted across the UK has steadily increased, Housing Secretary confirmed the Government will be able to guarantee only up to 15,000 tests by the end of the week compared to the 25,000 pledged. The confirmation sparked the fury of Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan, who challenged Mr Jenrick: “Why is Germany doing 10 times as many tests?

“No Government minister can give a straight answer to a very simple but very important question.

“Why is it that your chances of surviving this are 10 times better in Germany now than here because they’ve got the tests and we haven’t? That’s what it boils down to.”

Mr Morgan added: “You just said testing is key. If testing is key to saving lives, and they are doing ten times as much…”

The Housing Secretary dismissed claims extra testing would ensure the UK is able to save extra lives, but he insisted the Government is working hard to ensure the tests needed are made available soon.

At this difficult time for frontline doctors and nurses, sign up here to show your support now to our brave NHS Heroes.

Mr Jenrick said: “I’m not sure that assertion is correct, that your chances of surviving the virus are ten times more likely in Germany than it is in the UK.

“Testing is key but it’s not correct to say that individuals in Germany are 10 times more likely to survive.

“It’s why you and I, who are not medics, should be cautious about making statements like that that are not founded in medical science.”

He added: “Germany is testing more people than the UK is now, I am acknowledging that.

“We want to test far more people.”
