Sylvester McCoy, who featured in three series as the Time Lord said he was “always surprised by who they pick” to take on the lead role. “It has to be someone with lots of character. It can’t be someone bland and beautiful, rather handsome and characterful. “I was surprised when they got Matt Smith. He looked about 12, and yet he was brilliant! “One minute he looks 12, the next he looks 125. He has the perfect Doctor Who face. “So, a surprise. A person of colour would be great,” he told Radio Times. Jodie Whittaker, 38, is currently starring as the 13th incarnation of the infamous Time Lord on Doctor Who, exploring the depths of time and space with her companions Yaz Khan (played by Mandip Gill), Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole) and Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh). The last time viewers of the BBC sci-fi drama saw the trio together, they’d just managed to defeat an army of Cyber-Time Lords and the time travelling Gallifreyan was imprisoned by the Judoon. For fans of the on-screen drama, they will have to wait for the action to resume at Christmas, but for avid listeners of the Big Finish audio recordings, it seems the Tardis controller is about to face an old rival. However, could the events off-screen lead to a new and delayed feud unfolding for viewers of the sci-fi hit? During the programme’s six decade rein on television, The Doctor has ran into Time Lord High President Rassilon several times. The character’s most recent appearance was back in 2010 when Timothy Dalton’s, 74, incarnation of the time traveller came face-to-face with the tenth Doctor played by David Tennant, 49. It’s fair to say the meeting wasn’t friendly as the villain was assisted by The Master (John Simm) to bring back Gallifrey from the past, therefore allowing the Time Lord’s to come back from the time lock they’d been stuck in with the Daleks. Since then, he hasn’t been seen, but the character is making a sensational comeback for a new instalment of the Big Finish series, delving deeper into what happened during the Great Time War. Former Robin Hood star Richard Armitage, 48, has been cast in the role, so could he soon face Jodie’s Doctor on-screen in a future season? READ MORE: Doctor Who’s former writer Steven Moffat returns for special spin-off Speaking of voicing the villainous character, Richard said: “Rassilon is one of those defining spines of this lore. “I’ve watched enough sci-fi to know that there has to be an omnipotent being that has a self-aggrandising mental state which puts him above everybody else, like a malevolent, maniacal dictator. “I grew up with Doctor Who. The Daleks and the Cybermen were definitely my ‘hiding behind the sofa’ baddies. But I loved being frightened. “Tom Baker was my Doctor. He had that voice. In a way, what I have tried to do with Rassilon is a little bit Tom Baker-esque.” By season 12, Gallifrey was back on the map, so could the Time Lords make their return to cause havoc for Jodie’s Doctor, with Rassilon leading the charge? The Time Lord High President isn’t the first of the intergalactic species the time travelling hero and numerous companions have encountered. Over the years, The Master (Sacha Dhawan) has caused a great deal of trouble for his childhood friend. This has led to the destruction of Earth on several occasions and it has always been believed he was the greatest enemy of the Gallifreyan. The Doctor has also done battle with The Rani (Kate O’Mara), a deranged scientist known for enslaving entire planets to test her theories. Neither have managed to topple their Time Lord nemesis as of yet, so could the Time Lord High President prove too great a force for The Doctor to succeed? It’s not yet known when season 13 of the sci-fi hit will resume filming, after production was put on hold in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, after the Christmas special, it could be a little longer before the hero faces a new batch of enemies. Doctor Who is set to return on Christmas Day on BBC One. Episode 5, Are You From Pinner?, featured some surprising moments from Killing Eve’s ruthless hired killer Villanelle. As the black comedy continues its acclaimed third season on BBC and AMC, Jodie Comer revealed some insight on the latest revelations. The rest of the cast sat out in the latest episode of Killing Eve as Villanelle (played by Jodie Comer) returned to her home town to visit her mother Tatiana (Evgenia Dodina) and the rest of the family. Audiences were treated to some surprisingly sensitive moments between the serial killer and her family, with Villanelle and her mother’s longstanding grudge was also explored. Her pleasant visit was finally put to an end when Tatiana ordered Villanelle to leave, who then remained true to her violent dispositions by torching the house to the ground. However, several fans were surprised when Villanelle spared her younger brother by warning him before the house went up in flames. Villanelle also left him enough cash for him to attend an Elton John concert after bonding over the iconic English singer earlier in the episode. While her gesture was one of a small number of touching moments from the otherwise ruthless killer, Killing Eve star Jodie Comer recently commented on the effective instant of character growth. During an interview with entertainment news outlet TVLine, Jodie discussed whether or not this moment was ‘out of character’ for the psychopathic assassin. Jodie explained: “People are like: ‘That’s so out of character,’ but what I keep finding as I play her is that she’s ever growing.” Although the Emmy-winning screenwriter of Fleabag helped the series reach its initial heights, each new season enlists a brand new show runner to keep things fresh. Emerald Fennell took over head writing duties for season two, while Suzanne Heathcote is the current script boss for season three. Season four is confirmed to be in the works, which will also feature a new female head writer. Finally, Jodie concluded: “It’s hard to keep that up and it not get tedious. We have to grow with her.” “We have to listen to what it is she’s saying and what she’s experiencing. And I think that felt true to where she’s at right now.” Killing Eve has not only been praised for its complex cat-and-mouse relationship between the two leads, but also for Jodie Comer’s realistic portrayal of an assassin with psychopathic tendencies. Audiences are hoping the comedic thriller sensation can keep shaking things up as the ongoing plot thickens across multiple seasons. Killing Eve airs Sundays on AMC and BBC One and Monday mornings at 6am on the BBC iPlayer. Liverpool-born Jodie, who beat co-star Sandra Oh to an Emmy, told Variety: “It’s nice to bring your parents to these things. But I just said, ‘Oh no, sit this one out. Now’s not my time.’ I’m probably not going to ever live that one down with them – they’ll be coming to every single thing now.” The actress said she was stunned when her name was called out. She said: “I was in a complete state of shock. During the day I was strangely calm because I didn’t think it would be me. But it also happened so fast. You’re standing in front of all of these people – you want to say the right thing and don’t want to miss anybody. “You want to soak it up, not rush it, and take it all in. I feel like I blabbered on a lot.” The BBC drama features Sandra Oh as an MI5 agent on the tail of Jodie’s Russian assassin. It also stars actress Fiona Shaw. Jodie said there were “no hard feelings” after beating Sandra to the Emmy last Sunday. The pair have gone head to head for acting accolades before but Jodie said it did not make them feel uncomfortable. “I think people think it’s more awkward than it is,” Jodie said. “I’ve always said I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a show that has two female leads that are complex and in the same category. “It’s pretty special that we’re both in there together. “We’re so celebratory of each other, as is the whole crew. There are no hard feelings.” Jodie, 36, seems to have won over Doctor Who fans as she made her highly anticipated debut on the BBC sci-fi show earlier this year. The casting was announced in a short clip last summer with Jodie officially taking over from Peter Capaldi, 60, at the very end of the 2018 Christmas special. Although the BBC could have anticipated Jodie’s debut would be a ratings success, they may not have realised her inaugurnatioqnal season would give the show the best viewing figures in almost a decade. However, the viewing figures took a dip after the season 11 premiere with a decrease of 4 million viewers for the finale. The premiere received an audience of over 10 million viewers who tuned in to see the first ever female Doctor meet her new companions, Yaz Khan (played by Mandip Gill), Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole) and Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh). As a whole, the season pulled in an average of 7.7 million viewers according to statistics from the British Telecommunications PLC. This is the largest audience the show has received since Matt Smith, 36, made his debut with 8.05 million tuning in to watch him take over the role from David Tennant, 47, in 2010. However, although Jodie’s debut got off to a stellar start, only 6.48 million tuned in to watch the Doctor face gruesome villain Tzim-Sha (Samuel Oatley) in the season finale. Jodie managed to uphold a bigger audience for the first five episodes of the season with an average of 8.55 million tuning in to watch the Doctor reunited with her Tardis and meeting Rosa Parks (Vinette Robinson). Matt Smith still managed to beat Jodie however, as the first five episodes of his debut season received an average of 8.76 million. Hoping to draw in viewers one final time this season, Jodie will return in a New Years Day special in a break from the shows 13-year tradition of airing a Christmas Day special. A teaser for the episode entitled Resolution, revealed the TARDIS team will face off against the most dangerous creature in the universe. The Doctor and her companions will return to Earth after their many off-world adventures, only to discover an evil force is rising after stirring for centuries. Some believe the foe could be one of the Time Lord’s greatest enemies, the Daleks, who have not yet made an appearance this season. Speaking of the monsters’ return, Yaz star Mandip Gill, 30, told Entertainment Weekly: “Well, like you say, they’re just rumours, aren’t they?” However, the episode will be the only one to air in 2019 as another season is not expected to air until 2020. The news was announced on the shows official Twitter page in a tweet which reads: “Series 12 is on its way and will be returning to BBC One in early 2020. #DoctorWho.” However, fans should not fear about Jodie’s role as it was confirmed she and the three companions will all be returning. A post on the BBC website read: “Series 12 will see Jodie reprise her role as the Doctor and she will once again be joined by Bradley Walsh (Graham), Mandip Gill (Yasmin) and Tosin Cole (Ryan).” Who and what will Jodie’s Doctor face in the future? Could viewers see the return of familiar foes such as the Cybermen?” Doctor Who continues New Years Day at 7pm on BBC One. Just a few hours before wrapping Doctor Who‘s current season on Sunday, BBC America confirmed that Jodie Whittaker‘s adventures through time and space are far from over. “The Doctor and her friends will land again with an all-new season on @BBCAMERICA in early 2020,” read a tweet posted from the show’s official account. “Her” also confirms that Whittaker will once again be playing the Doctor (not that we had any doubt), a role she assumed to much fanfare earlier this year. Whittaker and the rest of the cast dropped by TVLine’s San Diego Comic-Con suite this summer to discuss all of the changes coming to the show, explaining that Season 11 would serve as a solid entry point for new fans curious about checking out the show for the first time. Additionally, BBC America released a first look at the series’ annual New Year’s Day special, airing — you guessed it — on Jan. 1, 2019. According to a tweet from the show’s account, this year’s special finds the Doctor going up against “the most dangerous creature in the universe.” (No big, right?) Watch the trailer below: TVLine’s Cable Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect Doctor Who‘s renewal. Are you looking forward to its 12th season? What did (and didn’t) you love about Season 11? “All of this is new to me. New faces, new worlds, new times. So if I asked really, really nicely, would you be my new best friends?”
That’s the question Jodie Whittaker poses to her three new companions played by Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill, and Tosin Cole in the first official Doctor Who season 11 trailer, but it’s also a question directed at us longtime Doctor Who fans who are always a little wary whenever the Doctor regenerates and a new actor takes on the beloved role of the time-traveling alien. Will we accept Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor — the 13th actor to take on the role, but only the first woman to do so? Yes, yes we will.
The trailer for Doctor Who season 11 has debuted following the BBC sci-fi series’ panel at San Diego Comic-Con! And though the trailer is brief, it’s jam-packed with exciting new adventures, plenty of action, and lots of awestruck faces pulled by Walsh, Gill, and Cole, the humans who are brought along for an adventure across time and space with Whittaker’s eccentric Doctor. Cole plays Ryan Sinclair, Gill is Yasmin Khan, and Walsh is Graham O’Brien, who we were all introduced to in the first Doctor Who teaser.
The trailer is only 40 seconds long, but it gives us a sense of what this new Doctor will be like under the guidance of new showrunner Chris Chibnall. The most noticeable thing, for one, is Whittaker’s beaming smile and her thick Northern England, Yorkshire accent. It almost feels like a nod to the first Doctor to kick off the current Doctor Who revival, Christopher Eccleston, who played the Ninth Doctor and had to suffer countless questions asking why an alien sounds like he’s from the North.
We also got a peek at the Thirteenth Doctor’s new sonic screwdriver which, upon closer inspection of pictures from the Doctor Who panel at Comic-Con, is super cute and slightly pink-hued. It reminds me of Sailor Moon’s Transformation Pen, which only makes me infinitely more excited and emotional.

The new sonic screwdriver was designed by Arwel Wyn Jones, who said at the panel, “It’s a privilege to have been asked to redesign the iconic Sonic Screwdriver for the Thirteenth Doctor and a new generation of audiences. I can’t wait for people to see how the Doctor acquires it.”
Collectible replicas of Whittaker’s sonic screwdriver will be available for pre-order starting July 25, 2018, and you can get one right here.
Whittaker’s first season as the star of Doctor Who will premiere on BBC America in fall 2018.

DOCTOR WHO season 11 is set to air this autumn according to speculation. But fans of the acclaimed BBC One show can now get a sneak peak at an opening scene from the season’s first episode after it has been leaked online. ![]()
THE SHOW | Killing Eve
THE EPISODE | “Nice Face” (April 8, 2018)
THE PERFORMANCE | Villanelle is the villain of this story. Villanelle is a psychopath. Villanelle kills people. So why do we find ourselves liking Villanelle so much? It must be due to the vibrant, mesmerizing work from Comer, who wasted no time in grabbing our attention in Sunday’s Killing Eve premiere.
When we first met Villanelle, she was sadistically dumping a dish of ice cream into a little girl’s lap, and Comer’s devilish grin let us know that Villanelle isn’t like the rest of us. She’s a contract killer, and a very good one, using her feminine wiles to slip in and out of crime scenes undetected. She’s got a sick sense of humor, too — she pranked her handler by pretending to commit suicide — and Comer added a heavy dash of dark humor to Villanelle that helped brighten up the blood-soaked proceedings. She also showed us Villanelle’s seductive side, as the killer charmed her way into a picturesque Italian wedding, only to gleefully murder a guest with a poison hairpin. Villanelle can basically do anything, it seems… except get caught.
Sandra Oh stars as Eve, the intelligence analyst chasing Villanelle, and she is, not surprisingly, excellent. (You should expect to see her celebrated in this space in the next few weeks.) But Comer comes as a pleasant surprise, effortlessly combining action, comedy and serial-killer horror in a bravura performance that equals Oh’s. We’re not exactly rooting for the killer here… but we are hoping it takes a little while for Eve to catch Villanelle, so Comer can continue to, well, kill it.
HONORABLE MENTION | Tough weeks for Homeland‘s Carrie Mathison tend to bring out the best in Claire Danes — and this was a tough week. Carrie’s hardened defenses broke down when she learned her sister Maggie was fighting for custody of Franny, and Danes was heartbreakingly fragile as a chin-quivering Carrie pleaded for another chance. Then all hell broke loose when Carrie rushed to the hospital to save Dante, almost backing over Franny in the process. The trauma of the near-miss sent Carrie into a full-blown psychological meltdown, and Danes played it raw and jagged as Carrie endured horrific hallucinations, finally collapsing and crying out in sheer terror. It was harrowing, to be sure, but thanks to Danes, we didn’t dare look away.
HONORABLE MENTION | No, we’re not singing Daniel Levy‘s praises a week after his Schitt’s Creek sibling Annie Murphy’s because we’re still on a post-binge high. He more than deserves a dog treat for his sublimely sincere work in the finale. Though his outré David had been burned so often that he was “the human equivalent of the inside of a roasted marshmallow,” he realized while encouraging Ted to trust Alexis with his heart that he should do the same with Patrick. And when he finally said back to his boyfriend the three little words he’d only ever uttered to his parents and Mariah Carey, his portrayer’s performance, from tone of voice to body language, was just like the moment: perfect. Except for that missing cup of tea.
HONORABLE MENTION | A bad audition is every actor’s nightmare, and Sarah Goldberg‘s aspiring actress Sally endured a doozy in a soul-crushing scene from this week’s Barry. Sally was thrilled to get an audition for an upcoming pilot (a TV version of We Bought a Zoo!), but her face fell when she learned an obnoxious former co-star of hers was already cast as the lead, and only brought her in as a favor. The normally upbeat Sally was heartbroken, and Goldberg was devastatingly vulnerable as Sally faked her way through congratulating her frenemy before completely bombing the biggest audition of her life. It actually takes great acting to play a bad actor — and Goldberg was very bad this week indeed.

During an interview with the Radio Times, she revealed her distain for superhero movies made on huge budgets.
Foster said: “Going to the movies has become like a theme park.”
Foster continued: “Studios making bad content in order to appeal to the masses and shareholders is like fracking – you get the best return right now but you wreck the earth.
“It’s ruining the viewing habits of the American population and then ultimately the rest of the world.
“I don’t want to make $ 200 million (£150 million) movies about superheroes.”
However when asked if there was a situation where she could see herself making a superhero movie, Foster did relent slightly.
