It’s just before noon on Geelong Cup day and while it seems like half the city has shut down and is here to celebrate, there’s work to be done.

There’s 3am alarms, thousands of kilometres to travel each week and imminent danger at every turn.

But there’s nowhere else this quartet would rather be.

Inside the female jockey’s room at Geelong, Nikita Beriman, Katelyn Mallyon, Tahlia Hope and Jessica Eaton all came and went as the day went on.

It’s a pretty calm place away from the buzz.

Next door, “the boys”.

There’s banter and laughs, but ultimately they’re there to pit themselves against every other jockey — gender aside.

“I don’t really think (we are treated any differently) by other riders or trainers,” Beriman said.

“We work so hard to be known as an athlete, not as a female jockey or a male jockey. We all go out there and do the same thing.

“If you work hard, trainers are willing to use you. Things have improved dramatically and can only get better.”

Beriman arrived at the track long before most punters, and was found stretching and examining the form in the room well before her first race.

It’s changed a bit since she was the first female to ride a Group 1 winner in Victoria 10 years ago.

Now, the female jockey room can get “packed”.

And the work doesn’t end when the last race finishes.

They all put in “plenty of homework”, watching replays, doing speed maps and form.

When Beriman leaves the room and meets her trainer — Shea Eden for both rides — and chats to owners after a pinch and a “g’day” from former champion trainer Peter Moody on her way to the yard, she knows just about exactly where each horse should be and when.

As for finishing fourth aboard King Way in the second, there was “frustration” as she watched the replay for a third time.

“I want them all to win,” she grinned.

When Hope arrives, there’s some catching up to do before some swapping of gear and a word or two of advice.

“I absolutely love helping them,” Beriman said.

“I’m more than happy to watch a replay or give my opinion if it’s asked for. I don’t care about lending my gear — it’s not a big issue for me.

“It’s good to see the young ones coming through and doing really well.”

Mallyon was the only one of the four to ride in the day’s feature.

Her brother Andrew worked the jockey circuit long before her, but she has more than held her own now that it’s her time.

“He warned me more so just that it’s a hard industry, and it is – it’s hard for the best at the top,” Mallyon said.

Hope went to the same school as Mallyon in Seymour, and lived around the corner.

Now they share digs at the track.

“I used to look after her when she was little – I look after her here, now,” Mallyon said.

“We’re all fantastic mates but we’re not so much matey out there – it’s every man for themselves out there (in races). We’re always treated very well and I’ve never felt any different.”

Michelle Payne and Kathy O’Hara were idols to Mallyon as she rose through the ranks, while Linda Meech has proven a strong mentor for Eaton.

Eaton lives with Meech in Stawell, with her bedroom repurposed from its former use.

“The room I’m sleeping in used to be her trophy room,” Eaton said.

“She’s ultra-consistent, so that’s my aim.”

Eaton’s day didn’t go to plan.

The apprentice drove from Stawell for her first listed ride but didn’t get it, with Tiszo Wicked living up to her name, rearing as she left the yard and then getting scratched at the barrier when she flipped.

Eaton grabbed the bars above her and “let herself fall off” before the mare exited the front of the barriers facing backwards.

That is, as they say, racing.

The feeling?

“It’s mainly just disappointment rather than rattled,” Eaton, 24, said.

“You know that you’re safe. The barrier attendants do an amazing job, especially in those situations. You’ve got to deal with the disappointment and learn to get over it. It’s all experience and we live to fight another day.”

Hope, 19, says her friends understand the gig, but it’s hard to decline when they want to go out on a Friday night.

“You do and you don’t have a life, to a degree,” she explained, having travelled following Ballarat trackwork.

Racing in a Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate or Caulfield Cup on “something that’s a chance” is the goal for the child who used to be “parked in the jockey’s room” as trainer father Shannon saddled up his horses on race days.

She has often had grandfather Lee — also a trainer — trying to convince her to get out of the saddle.

“I think he loves it, but he’d never tell you that,” she smiled.

Hope broke her tibia, fibia and ankle this year — the perils of racing. There’s a plate and nine screws in there at the moment — it gets a bit stiff on a cold Seymour morning.

Beriman was once in Hope’s shoes, having her first ride in 2002.

The passion hasn’t waned.

Both of her parents were jockeys and her father a trainer – she’d ride work before school.

“It was probably bred into me,” she said.

“I couldn’t imagine getting out of bed to go to a 9-5 job in an office.

“And I’m the luckiest person in the world.”

It is the second year the club has held the fundraiser on Caulfield Cup day.

Racegoers are encouraged to wear a touch of pink and there will be entertainment after the final event.

Stewart will be among those donning the pink breeches at Doomben, where his most interesting mount is the resuming stakes winner Saint Patrick’s Day, who runs against older horses in the 1MW. “His trials have been OK and I think he’s matured mentally since we last saw him,” Stewart said.

Stewart spent six years in Singapore but hasn’t ridden at Kranji since he left in the 2011-12 season. He was sought out for the ride on Gold Faith in the El Dorado Classic and local owners and trainers obviously haven’t forgotten him, because he’s secured six other rides at the meeting as well.

Gold Faith runs in the race named after one of Stewart’s favourite horses, on which he won three Gold Cups in Singapore.

“My last ride in Singapore was on El Dorado, so it brings back a few memories,” he said. “It was nice to be able to pick up those other six rides as well, so hopefully I can have a bit of luck.”

THE FAMILY of critically injured jockey Melanie Bolwell is keeping a bedside vigil at Gold Coast Hospital after a horrific three-horse fall over the weekend that killed popular country jockey Darren Jones.

Apprentice jockey Melanie Bolwell is suffering bleeding on the brain and remains sedated, her father Jason told the Daily Telegraph this morning, after the fatal accident at Warialda races in northern NSW on Saturday.

“She’s opened her eyes a few times over the night, but she’s still heavily sedated and on a ventilator,” he said.

Mr Bolwell said his daughter, age 22, had been an apprentice jockey to Tamworth trainer Sue Grills for the past two years and that he and wife Narelle had accepted the dangerous nature of their daughter’s chosen career.

“She’s had injuries before – it goes with the trade – but nothing as serious as this,” he said, adding that Melanie was the only jockey member the family.

“We’re not that silly,” he said.

The apprentice remains unaware that her mentor was killed in the same accident.

NSW RACING INDUSTRY MOURN LOSS OF DARREN JONES

Ms Grills said she was getting regular updates on Melanie’s condition.

“It’s still early days,” she said. “Melanie has really looked up to Darren over the past two years, she saw him as a bit of a mentor,” she said.

Racing NSW’s general manager of industry welfare and jockey safety officer, Maurice Logue, said last night it could be up to 72 hours before doctors make a call on whether surgery would be needed.

“It’s quite common for serious head injuries that they don’t know the full extent immediately and a number of days might go by before they have a better idea of what the outcome is going to be,” he said.

The third jockey involved in the horror pile up, Leanne Henry, is expected to undergo surgery this afternoon.

Ms Henry, who sustained a fractured collarbone in the accident, was discharged from

Tamworth Hospital yesterday.

“I don&apos;t remember anything, I have no memory of what happened,” she told the Daily Telegraph this morning, from the Sydney rooms of Racing NSW’s orthopedic surgeon Dr David Duckworth.

“I’ve had plenty of other falls but this is probably the worst in 20 years (racing).”

At today’s race meet in Armidale, a minute’s silence will be observed for Darren Jones and jockeys will wear black armbands to mark Saturday’s tragedy.

In Sydney on the same day, two jockeys took a serious tumble during the Sydney Cup at Royal Randwick, resulting in the racehorse Almoonqith being euthanised on the track. The riders, Blake Shinn and James Doyle, limped from the course but the race was called off for safety reasons.

Racing NSW will decide today if and when the race will be rescheduled.

According to the National Jockeys Trust, 15 jockeys have been killed in as many years since 2002.

BRISBANE’S leading apprentice Tiffani Brooker gave the credit to her mount Dreams Aplenty after she won the second heat of the National Apprentices series on Wednesday.

The race drew apprentice jockeys from across Australia to Eagle Farm and Brooker’s win followed Brooke Stower’s win in the race last year on Fleur D’Orage.

Despite drawing the extreme outside barrier Brooker allowed Dreams Aplenty ($ 1.90) to cross the field and lead after 600m.

Dreams Aplenty, who ran second in the Group Two BRC Sires last winter, was too good for the Class 3 Plate field winning by 2 1/4 lengths from All That Is ($ 51) ridden by Perth’s Randy Tan.

Tasmania’s Hayley McCarthy was third 1 1/4 lengths back on Mishani Sleuth ($ 7.50).

Brooker has been in great form leading the Brisbane apprentices premiership on 20 wins for the season while it was her 127th career victory.

“Dreams A Plenty is obviously a good horse. in fact he was the best horse in the race. He didn’t begin as well as I would have liked but he worked his way to the lead and was too strong.”

Trainer John Zielke thought so much of Dreams Aplenty that he took the gelding to Flemington in the spring for the Danehill Stakes.

“But he was injured in the run and we had to come home. This time we will work him along slowly with his first target probably the Weetwood Handicap in Toowoomba on April 8,” Zielke said.

“Nozi Tomizawa who has won a Weetwood as a jockey came to me and said the way Dreams Aplenty works up the hill at Toowoomba he would be ideal for the Weetwood.”

“We just need some more prize money and we could sneak into the Weetwood on a light weight.”

Zielke is also looking at the three year old races up to 1600m in the winter for Dreams Aplenty.

In form jockey Luke Dittman, who produced another top ride to win on Hidden Budget ($ 4), has decided not to appeal an 11 days suspension which started Wednesday night.

Dittman was able to bounce Hidden Budget to the lead from barrier 16 and was never headed in the Three Year Old Fillies Maiden Plate (1300m).

“I will use the time off from the suspension to have a holiday and visit my family,” said Dittman who was riding on an automatic stay from March 1 when he was suspended.

The son of champion jockey Mick Dittman has been making a big name for himself of late and is averaging a winner a race meeting in recent weeks.

“That was a clever ride and Luke has a lot of his dad in him,” winning trainer Kelly Schweida said.

Jeff Lloyd inched ever closer to Chris Munce’s Brisbane metropolitan jockeys record of 103 winners when he had his 98th success for the season on Novative ($ 2.80).

The win continued trainer Ben Currie’s success with horses bought from Darley dispersal sales.

Trainer Stuart Kendrick is looking to stepping former Melbourne galloper Margin Trader up in distance after he won the Class 4 (1835m).
