The next big terrorist threat in Europe could come from IS supporters currently in prison for minor terrorism-related crimes, according to Interpol Secretary-General Jurgen Stock. As they leave jail in the coming years, their radical beliefs are likely to trigger a relapse.

“In many parts of the world, in Europe but also Asia, this generation of early supporters will be released in the next couple of years, and they may again be part of a terrorist group or those supporting terrorist activities,” Stock said, estimating that the average jailed jihadist is serving a sentence of between two and five years.

Radicalized wives & kids of ISIS fighters ‘must be identified as jihadis’ – German intel chief

“We could soon be facing a second wave of other Islamic State-linked or radicalized individuals that you might call ISIS 2.0,” he told the Anglo-American Press Association, as cited by the Guardian.

Possible members of IS sleeper cells aside, there is an ongoing threat of returning terrorists fleeing Iraq and Syria since the demise of Islamic State. Those disenchanted fighters with nothing to lose have become a major issue for local law enforcement.

“The security agencies are concerned about when they are coming back because most of them are battle hardened, they are trained, and they are internationally connected,” Stock said, noting that going to Syria and Iraq in the first place “was a huge opportunity to network on an international level.”

“These contacts still exist and we shouldn’t forget that,” he said.

It’s a guessing game as to where the retreating jihadists are going to flee when they’re squeezed out of Syria and Iraq. One of the probable destinations is southeast Asia or Africa, where there are still terrorist hotbeds. Another option for the jihadists is to keep a low profile and try to sneak back into Europe.

“With ISIS defeated geographically, these individuals will either try to move to other areas of conflict in southeast Asia, or Africa, or remain in Europe to carry out attacks,” Stock said.

Interpol has some 45,000 suspected foreign fighters in its database but it’s a Sisyphean task for local police to track them down, as many have perished on the battlefield, some are holed up in Syria or Iraq, and the whereabouts of many others is unknown.

Intelligence agencies in many countries, including in Europe, which has seen a spate of Islamist-linked terrorist attacks in recent years, have sounded the alarm over the threat posed by returnees.

Germany’s intelligence chief has warned that the children of jihadists coming from war zones can grow up to follow in the footsteps of their parents. Hans-Georg Maassen called for both widows and children of IS fighters to be treated as jihadists, arguing that they pose a considerable security risk after being brainwashed by IS propaganda.

The same concerns were echoed by the authorities in France, which has welcomed at least 300 jihadist militants back from Syria and Iraq. There have been calls for French citizens arrested on terrorist charges in Syria and Iraq to be tried there rather than brought back to France.

‘Lonely hearts jihadists’ found guilty of Christmas bomb terrorist plot https://briefnews.eu/lonely-hearts-jihadists-found-guilty-of-christmas-bomb-terrorist-plot/ https://briefnews.eu/lonely-hearts-jihadists-found-guilty-of-christmas-bomb-terrorist-plot/#respond Tue, 09 Jan 2018 11:07:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lonely-hearts-jihadists-found-guilty-of-christmas-bomb-terrorist-plot/ A couple who met on a Muslim dating site called ‘SingleMuslim.com’ have been found guilty of plotting a terrorist attack with an Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) inspired ‘Mother of Satan’ bomb in Derby.

Sudanese asylum seeker Munir Mohammed, 37, volunteered for a “lone wolf” UK mission as he chatted on Facebook with a man he believed to be an IS commander, according to The Times. He enlisted the help of pharmacist Rowaida El-Hassan, drawing on her knowledge of chemicals needed to make a bomb after meeting her on the dating site. They have been dubbed “the lonely hearts jihadists” by the British media.

At the time of his arrest in December 2016, Mohammed, who was living in Derby, had two of the three components required to make triacetone triperoxide (TATP) explosives, known as ‘Mother of Satan,’ and thought he had the third. He was captured on in-store CCTV buying acetone-free nail polish from Asda in the mistaken belief that it was a chemical component for the bomb. Investigators believe that it was only his lack of English that resulted in him buying the wrong ingredient.

He was also in possession of a video that offered a step-by-step guide to producing Mother of Satan, and downloaded it the day after it was released by IS in November. The bomb-making guide, which had been posted on Facebook, YouTube and other sites, is understood to have been used by Salman Abedi, the suicide bomber in the Manchester Arena attack in May last year.

Mohammed had also researched the poison, ricin, while working illegally in a factory making sauces for supermarket chains. It is understood that he may have been planning to poison the food.

El-Hassan, 33, a former Boots pharmacist and divorced mother of two from Willesden in northwest London, met Mohammed on SingleMuslim.com, and they “rapidly formed an emotional attachment,” prosecutors said. Mohammed sent her gory videos of IS executions, including some carried out by children, while she asked him to “send more,” and helped guide him to the right chemicals for his bomb.

Mohammed had followed a migrant route through Turkey and Greece to Britain, abandoning his pregnant wife along the way after she had a miscarriage. He was smuggled into Britain in the back of a lorry and arrested as he walked along the M1 in Northamptonshire, claiming asylum on the basis that he was from Eritrea, although he had actually been living in Sudan.

Once given a room in a shared house for asylum seekers, he used a friend’s Dutch identity card to work illegally. He worked in a car wash, washed dishes in a restaurant, and did a stint at a food-processing factory producing sauces for Tesco and Morrisons.
He also worked at a Toyota factory in Derby, and was buying second-hand luxury cars and re-selling them. When police arrested him, they found a BMW 1 series, an Audi A3 and a Seat Ibiza.

Judge Michael Topolski QC, at the Old Bailey, remanded the pair in custody and warned them that they will face jail when they are sentenced on February 22.

Scores of French jihadists received welfare payments after joining ISIS – report https://briefnews.eu/scores-of-french-jihadists-received-welfare-payments-after-joining-isis-report/ https://briefnews.eu/scores-of-french-jihadists-received-welfare-payments-after-joining-isis-report/#respond Fri, 27 Oct 2017 18:30:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/scores-of-french-jihadists-received-welfare-payments-after-joining-isis-report/

French jihadists who went to fight alongside Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Syria and Iraq received welfare benefits after joining the terrorists, local media are reporting citing police.

France’s Criminal Brigade, specializing in tracking down IS funding, has uncovered fraudulent welfare payments to jihadists totaling over €2 million ($ 2.3 million) from Europe between 2012 and 2017. Some €500,000 came from France, Le Figaro reported.

About 420 fraudulent welfare payments to French fighters were discovered last year, the newspaper said citing police. The money was passed through an international network of fundraisers. Police have identified at least 210 Turkish and Lebanese intermediaries, as well as 190 from France.

“Relatives used identity papers with photos to claim money from social security centers or family allowances on their behalf and later transferred the funds to them in the combat zones, in particular via Turkey,” an investigator told Le Figaro as cited by The Local.

“Probably” some 500 French militants are presently fighting alongside IS in Iraq and Syria, French Defense Minister Florence Parly told the Europe 1 radio station earlier this month. “That numbers are likely to shrink,” as some jihadists were killed on the battlefield, she added.

French interior minister Gerard Collomb said in August that 217 adult French nationals and 54 minors had returned from fighting in the Middle East. “The terrorist threat remains very high,” he told Le Journal du Dimanche.  He also announced that around 700 French militants had travelled to join the fighting in war-torn Iraq and Syria over the past years. The exact number of those who lost their lives is however not known.

Earlier in October, the French parliament approved a new anti-terrorist bill that extended the powers of the Interior Ministry, allowing it to set up security zones without the approval of a judge. The controversial new legislation came under fire from human rights groups who said it violated some civil liberties.

France has been on high alert since January 2015 when it was hit by a series of Islamic State-linked terrorist attacks. The deadliest strike occurred in November of that year, when 130 people were killed and hundreds injured in coordinated assaults in Paris and Saint-Denis, the capital’s northern suburb. In another major terrorist attack to hit France, a truck plowed into festive crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice in 2016, killing 86 people and injuring more than 400 others.

French authorities have detained “some” and are investigating the rest of the 271 jihadi militants who are known to have returned after fighting for ISIS in Iraq and Syria, the country’s interior minister has revealed, adding, that the terrorist threat in France remains “very high.”

Some 217 adult French nationals have returned to France from fighting in the Middle East, Gerard Collomb told Le Journal du Dimanche. In addition, some 54 minors have reportedly made it back home after fighting alongside self-proclaimed IS (Islamic State, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists.

An undisclosed number of them have been detained while the rest are being vetted by public prosecutors, the interior minister said. He revealed that an estimated 700 French militants had travelled to Iraq and Syria over the past years. Some of them have been killed with the exact number unknown.

With the growing number of returning radicalized fighters, the threat of terrorist attacks in France remains “very high,” the minister said, noting seven foiled plots so far this year.

Collomb added that in addition to returnees, another 18,500 people have been flagged under a preventative monitoring system for radicalized behavior, Reuters reported.

France has been on high alert since January 2015, when it was hit by a series of Islamic State-linked terrorist attacks. The most notable of these occurred in November of 2015, when 130 people were killed and over 360 injured in coordinated terror attacks in Paris and Saint-Denis, a northern Parisian suburb.

An attack in Nice on July 14, 2016, killed at least 84 people when a truck driven by an IS sympathizer plowed through crowds during Bastille Day celebrations. This year, jihadist attackers were involved in two incidents targeting police on the Champs Elysees in Paris.

Libyan strongman Haftar declares liberation of Benghazi from jihadists (VIDEOS) https://briefnews.eu/libyan-strongman-haftar-declares-liberation-of-benghazi-from-jihadists-videos/ https://briefnews.eu/libyan-strongman-haftar-declares-liberation-of-benghazi-from-jihadists-videos/#respond Thu, 06 Jul 2017 04:57:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/libyan-strongman-haftar-declares-liberation-of-benghazi-from-jihadists-videos/

After more than three years of fighting, the self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA) has liberated Libya’s second-largest city from Islamist militants, General Khalifa Haftar announced on state TV, declaring a “new era of peace” in Benghazi.

Several Islamist militant and jihadist cells belonging to the so-called Revolutionary Shura Council of Benghazi managed to capture the cradle of the Libyan uprising in 2014, prompting competing centers of power in the fractured country to battle for the city.

After three years of fierce fighting, which began in May 2014, Field Marshal Haftar, the leader of the Libyan National Army (LNA), finally announced that his forces are now in full control of Benghazi.

“After a continuous struggle against terrorism and its agents that lasted more than three years… we announce to you the liberation of Benghazi from terrorism,” Haftar said in a speech broadcast on television.

Adding that his forces are now sweeping the city for remaining mines and bombs, Haftar promised peace to the residents of the city.

“Today Benghazi enters a new era of peace, security, reconciliation…. and, reconstruction,” Haftar noted.

With Benghazi liberated, the LNA now exerts control over the eastern part of the country, which is still struggling to recover from the repercussions of the NATO-backed uprising.

Libya descended into chaos after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi, with multiple ‘governments’ and centers of power competing for control of the oil-rich country.

The first is the Presidential Council (PC), which has been based in Tripoli since March 30, 2016 and created following the signing of the UN-brokered Libyan Political Agreement (LPA) in December 2015. The Presidential Council presides over the internationally recognized Government of National Accord (GNA).

The second ‘government’ is the rival National Salvation Government (GNC) headed by Prime Minister Khalifa Ghwell. The GNC was installed after a coalition of armed groups supporting it won the battle for control of Tripoli in 2014.

The third center of power, headed by the anti-Islamist Marshal Haftar, is based in Tobruk and is aligned with Egypt. It completely rejects the GNC but partially recognizes the authority of the GNA. Libya’s foreign minister recently announced that Haftar was “the commander-in-chief of the Libyan army” as long as he recognizes the UN-backed GNA as the only authority.

‘Foreign jihadists’ among militants terrorizing Philippines https://briefnews.eu/foreign-jihadists-among-militants-terrorizing-philippines/ https://briefnews.eu/foreign-jihadists-among-militants-terrorizing-philippines/#respond Fri, 26 May 2017 04:11:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/foreign-jihadists-among-militants-terrorizing-philippines/

The Maute group confronting the Philippine army in Marawi City is no longer considered a local terrorist organization as it has been reinforced by jihadists of Malaysian, Indonesian and “other nationalities,” the country’s authorities have announced.

“Before it was just a local terrorist group. But now they have subscribed to the ideology of ISIS (Islamic State). They want to make Mindanao as part of the caliphate,” Solicitor General Jose Calida told a news conference, according to Reuters.

He added that Indonesians and Malaysians are among the Islamist radicals who are fighting the army.

Meanwhile, an army spokesman said six foreigners were killed in Mindanao on Thursday, including militants of Malaysian, Indonesian and “other nationalities.”

Former Head of Cobra demands UK deport jihadists NOW ‘We can't allow them to roam free' https://briefnews.eu/former-head-of-cobra-demands-uk-deport-jihadists-now-we-cant-allow-them-to-roam-free/ https://briefnews.eu/former-head-of-cobra-demands-uk-deport-jihadists-now-we-cant-allow-them-to-roam-free/#respond Thu, 25 May 2017 12:45:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/former-head-of-cobra-demands-uk-deport-jihadists-now-we-cant-allow-them-to-roam-free/

He spoke to Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard on today about what can be done to help reduce the threat of terror in the UK.

“We have the finest intelligence services and finest police services in the world and they have protected us time and time again,” he noted.  “Hundreds of attacks have been stopped, thousands of terrorists have been put in prison.

“The problem is that there are 3,000 known jihadists on the streets of the UK today, our intelligence services, our police services, no matter how good they are they can’t monitor all of them, they can’t control all of them.”

He went on to add that security services have to “prioritise” those they focus their attention on and “sometimes get it wrong”.

Colonel Kemp insisted that the only way to help them was to deport those who pose a threat, commenting: “Every single person who we have intelligence upon, who is known to be involved in terrorism, who is not a UK citizen, and who we cannot prosecute in this court, we deport and send them back to where they came from.

“We do not allow them to roam free on our streets and murder and maim and disfigure our children like they did in Manchester.”

Kate raised the point that Salman Abedi, who detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) as children and their parents left the Manchester Arena on Monday night, was a British citizen, which meant he could not be deported.

But Colonel Kemp hit back: “I’m well aware of the complications but we don’t have to make excuses because there are complications, if he is a British citizen then we intern him if he can’t be deported.”

His comments came after Steve How, who lost his wife Alison during the heartless attack, and more needs to be done to combat terror.

He told the ITV hosts that he “can’t put into words” how his family feels following their loss, adding: “We’re broken in half.”
