"He's obviously a big part of that team and playing very well," the Jets goalie said. "But I like my game. I like it a lot more."

The expansion Golden Knights lead the best-of-seven series 2-1 with Game 4 back at T-Mobile Arena on Friday and Game 5 in Winnipeg on Sunday.

A Game 6, if necessary, would be May 22 in Las Vegas and a Game 7 would be May 24 in Winnipeg.

When told of Hellebuyck's comment Thursday, Maurice replied "Sweet."

Fleury made 33 saves including 15-of-16 in the third period when Winnipeg pressed hard.

Hellebuyck was no slouch with 27 stops, although his miscue playing the puck behind Winnipeg's net in the second period led to a James Neal goal.

Playoff hockey requires self-assurance, so Maurice was pleased to hear of it from the Jets starter, who turns 25 on Saturday.

Maurice recalls pulling Hellebuyck last season and finding the rookie undaunted.

"Last year, when I did in fact pull him, I'd say, 'There were one or two (goals) I didn't like, but you had no chance on the fourth one.' He'd say, 'Oh, I can have the fourth one,"' Maurice said.

"It'll be across the crease, no chance in hell he's getting that puck, and he believes he can stop that puck. I don't plan to stomp that mentality."

In just his second NHL season, the six-foot-four, 207-pound Hellebuyck from Commerce, Mich., is one of three finalists for this year's Vezina Trophy that goes to the NHL's top goaltender.

He's up against Nashville's Pekka Rinne and Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Hellebuyck posted 44 regular-season wins, including nine straight to end the season. His playoff save percentage was .922 and his goals-against average was 2.34 in 15 games.

Fleury owns three Stanley Cup rings from his years with the Pittsburgh Penguins and has played in 128 career NHL playoff games.

Just when it looked like the Real Deal was out of the game, he was just getting started 0:52

Hellebuyck may be greener than "Flower", but his Jets teammates insist their goalie would never feel intimidated by the man at the other end of the ice.

"He's got an extremely high belief in his ability," centre Adam Lowry said. "You look at the way Carey Price moves around the net, I see a lot of similarities in the way he moves throughout the crease.

"He's done a real good job of bouncing back after games where he hasn't been thrilled with his effort.

Jets' Dustin Byfuglien poses big problem for Golden Knights https://briefnews.eu/jets-dustin-byfuglien-poses-big-problem-for-golden-knights/ https://briefnews.eu/jets-dustin-byfuglien-poses-big-problem-for-golden-knights/#respond Mon, 14 May 2018 06:00:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jets-dustin-byfuglien-poses-big-problem-for-golden-knights/

Dustin Byfuglien is a big problem for Vegas.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Winnipeg defenceman can do it all, as the Golden Knights saw up close when he helped the Jets win Game 1 of the Western Conference finals with a goal and an assist.

"We got moving our feet right away," Byfuglien said. "And the ice opened up."

Byfuglien has a powerful shot, as he showed with a slap shot 1:05 into the Jets' 4-2 victory .

The 33-year-old former forward, who played right wing for the Chicago Blackhawks during their Stanley Cup run in 2010, can join a rush on offence in even-strength situations and plays on the power play. The NFL-sized player is nimble enough to skate fluidly and he handles the puck with soft hands. Byfuglien can crunch opponents against the boards or on the open ice with checks and kill penalties with savvy positioning.

In Game 1, he did all of that and more.

Three 1st Period goals helped propel the Winnipeg Jets to a 4-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 1 of the Western Conference Final on Saturday night in Winnipeg. 2:06

'He's kind of one of a kind'

"You saw the Dustin Byfuglien spectrum," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "He can shoot the puck a ton. He can make soft-hand plays and he can be as big and strong as you want out there."

Vegas centre William Karlsson was asked to compare Byfuglien with any other player in the league. And he was stumped.

"He's kind of one of a kind," Karlsson said.

If the expansion Golden Knights can't figure out a way to keep the puck away from Byfuglien and work around him offensively, their inaugural season may not last beyond this series.

Game 2 is Monday night in Winnipeg.

Post-season performer

Byfuglien leads the league's defencemen with 15 points and five multi-point games in the playoffs.

"When he is on his game, he is as good as anybody," Vegas coach Gerrard Gallant. "He's a big strong man and can play the game any way you want to play it.

"Buf is a good player, but hopefully we don't give him too many chances to load up like we did [in Game 1] and take that big shot."

The Blackhawks gave Byfuglien a shot to play in the NHL, taking a flyer on the Minnesota native in the eighth round with the No. 245 pick overall in 2003. He played his first full season in the league five years later and had 11 goals and five assists for Chicago during the 2010 playoffs.

Byfuglien didn't get to celebrate the championship for very long because the Blackhawks traded him to less than three weeks after hoisting the Cup. Chicago sent him to the Atlanta Thrashers, who became the Jets, to help manage its salary cap. He has become a three-time all-star with the franchise and a player respected enough on the blue+line to be in the running for the Norris Trophy six times.

Byfuglien, though, got off to a slow start offensively this season with a slump that seems improbable for a player with five goals in 13 playoff games this year. He began the season with a 29-game goal drought and finished with eight goals, his fewest in five seasons.

Businesslike approach

"He had a helluva year and it was masked by the fact that he didn't score a goal for a long time and didn't generate points," Maurice said. "The question was `What's wrong with Dustin Byfuglien?' And the answer was, `Absolutely nothing,' because our hockey team was winning and he was playing right."

Byfuglien has been businesslike around reporters lately, appearing to be focused on his tasks instead of showing off tricks with a cosmetic tooth he can pop in and out of his mouth with his tongue. When a reporter asked about the Atlanta hat he wore in the dressing room before Game 1, wondering if it was a nod to his season with the Thrashers, he wasn't in the mood to play along.

"The what?" he asked. "I don't even know what hat I got on."

Byfuglien also wasn't interested in comparing the Jets' run to his success with the Blackhawks.

"That was a while ago," he said.

Discussing the challenges of facing Vegas goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury also didn't interest him.

"Get it behind him," he said. "Shoot pucks and hopefully they go in."

His first shot against Fleury found the back of the net, and the blast probably pushed the netting to its limit because it was so powerful.

"That first goal was a bomb," Vegas defenceman Deryk Engelland said.

Failure to launch: Predators ground Jets' attempt at closing series https://briefnews.eu/failure-to-launch-predators-ground-jets-attempt-at-closing-series/ https://briefnews.eu/failure-to-launch-predators-ground-jets-attempt-at-closing-series/#respond Tue, 08 May 2018 09:15:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/failure-to-launch-predators-ground-jets-attempt-at-closing-series/ All of a sudden the best home team in hockey can't close the deal in front of their loud and loyal fanatics.

The Winnipeg Jets were stymied for the second straight game at Bell MTS Place by the Nashville Predators, this time by a 4-0 score that forced a seventh and deciding game back in Nashville on Thursday evening.

The Predators' dominant outing made for a quiet night in Winnipeg as the Jets fans inside and outside the arena were revved up and primed for a victory party. But the veteran Predators had another idea.

Nashville beats Winnipeg 4-0, ties series at 3-3. Pekka Rinne 34 saves.1:39

It wasn't a shocking result, considering the Predators advanced all the way to the Stanley Cup final last season, won the Presidents' Trophy this year and were the best team on the road in the regular season. They have also gone 5-0 in the post-season after a loss.

But the Jets failed to learn from their mistakes in Game 4 at home last week, in which they could not find a way to penetrate the Predators defensive wall in a 2-1 loss.

Game 6 was similar to Game 4. Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne was once again strong with a 34-save shutout, but the Predators also received an outstanding effort from their penalty-killing unit, which went four-for-four, and their top line.

Ryan Johansen, Viktor Arvidsson and Filip Forsberg accounted for all four of the Predators goals and combined for eight points. Arvidsson and Forsberg each scored two apiece.

The Jets' first line of Mark Scheifele, captain Blake Wheeler and Kyle Connor has come through for Winnipeg in this series, too, but on Monday, it was the Predators' top trio that shone.

Arvidsson ducked and managed to tip home a shot 62 seconds into the game. Forsberg went undetected behind Jets defenceman Ben Chiarot after the Predators left wing went to the bench to get a new stick for a second-period goal.

Forsberg made it 3-0 in the third period with a magical between the legs shot and Arvidsson finished the deal with an empty-netter.

"Most of our best offence never got to the net. Good sticks on them, great job blocking shots," Jets coach Paul Maurice said.

"We need to get a little faster, a little quicker. I know you get tired of me saying that, but it's the foundation of what we do. For whatever reason, we didn't have that tonight.

"We didn't move the puck particularly well on [the power play], but that was also in the five-on-five game, not just the five-on-four game."

Time to regroup

The Jets now have two days to regroup. No team has been able to win back-to-back games in this series and Winnipeggers surely hope this trend continues.

The Jets looked tentative in Game 6. They didn't move the puck well, especially when they enjoyed zone time in the Predators' end. Some of this was because of the Predators' strong defensive game, but some of this was on the Jets, too.

"I know this: Pittsburgh lost tonight — a pretty good team," Maurice said, referring to the back-to-back Stanley Cup champions being eliminated by Washington on Monday.

"They've learned all those lessons you're supposed to learn — killer instinct — all the words that will come out today that we didn't get, and they lost. It's playoff hockey. For all the good things [the Predators] did tonight, it wasn't their last game and we were a pretty good team.

Maurice added that the series probably deserves to go to seven games and the two teams are evenly matched in their desire to move on to the next round.

"It's been back and forth, up and down, so it's probably right that it's going seven games. There was lots of stuff we didn't like. The idea that you're going to go out there and win every night because you won the last one, well, we'd have a whole bunch of teams going 16-0.

"There have been an awful lot of [Game 7s] that have happened in the history of the National Hockey League and somebody was 3-2 in every one of those. They were good on the road, we were good in our last game [in Nashville]. We want to win the game just as bad as they do."

Predators stifle Jets' attack to knot series 2-2 https://briefnews.eu/predators-stifle-jets-attack-to-knot-series-2-2/ https://briefnews.eu/predators-stifle-jets-attack-to-knot-series-2-2/#respond Fri, 04 May 2018 05:04:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/predators-stifle-jets-attack-to-knot-series-2-2/

Pekka Rinne made 32 saves as the Nashville Predators defeated the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 on Thursday to even their second-round series 2-2.

Ryan Hartman and P.K. Subban scored for the Predators.

Patrik Laine replied for the Jets, who got 29 stops from Connor Hellebuyck.

Game 5 of the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal goes Saturday in Nashville, with Game 6 set for Winnipeg on Monday.

Game 7, if necessary, would be back in Nashville next Thursday.

Neutral zone clogged

While not really at fault on any of the five goals he allowed in the Predators’ 7-4 loss in Game 3, Rinne still rebounded in impressive fashion behind a team that played much better defensively and won the vast majority of the 50-50 battles.

The Jets had far less space in the neutral zone to operate, but also saw a couple of golden opportunities just bounce over their sticks.

Leading 1-0 after the first period, the Predators stretched their lead to two with 5:24 left in the second when Subban blasted a one-timer on Nashville’s first power play of the night through Hellebuyck for his third goal of the series, and third of the playoffs.

Booed by the thunderous white-clad crowd every time he’s touched the puck the last two games, Subban seemed to feed off the noise directed his way at the cauldron that is Bell MTS Place.

The Jets had a couple of great chances to tie the game earlier in the period, with Kyle Connor missing on a pass from Bryan Little in the slot on a man advantage before Mark Scheifele saw the puck skip over his stick on a 2-on-1 with Blake Wheeler moments before Subban silenced the home crowd with his power-play blast.

Laine scored on a 6-on-4 advantage with 50.2 seconds left in the third — his third of the playoffs and first of the series — but the Predators held on from there to wrestle back home-ice advantage.

Nikolaj Ehlers was back on the Jets’ top line alongside Scheifele and Wheeler after switching spots with Connor following Tuesday’s disastrous opening 20 minutes that saw Winnipeg fall behind 3-0. Connor once again skated with Laine and Paul Stastny.

Close throughout

Nashville opened the scoring with 2:40 left in the first when Hartman scored his second of the playoffs off a scramble in front. An attempted clear by Winnipeg’s Ben Chiarot in front instead went off defence partner Tyler Myers and right to Hartman, who was quickest to the loose puck before beating Hellebuyck upstairs.

The teams traded chances earlier in the period, with Hellebuyck stopping Roman Josi and Scott Hartnell on 2-on-1 breaks, while the butt end of Rinne’s stick got in the way of Josh Morrisey’s backhand chance along the ice at the other end.

Winnipeg advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since relocating from Atlanta in 2011, brushing aside the Minnesota Wild in five games. The old Jets, who left town in 1996 to become the Phoenix Coyotes, only made it beyond the first round twice in their history, with the last coming in 1987.

The Predators, meanwhile, disposed of the Colorado Avalanche in six games in the opening round, and are looking to get back to the Stanley Cup final after losing out to the Pittsburgh Penguins in last year’s final.

Nashville collected an NHL-high 117 points in the regular season to win the Presidents’ Trophy, while Winnipeg finished with to come second. But because of the NHL’s playoff format, the two Central Division rivals are meeting in the second round instead of potentially tangling in the Western Conference final.

Jets' surprise deal for Stastny a coup for GM Cheveldayoff https://briefnews.eu/jets-surprise-deal-for-stastny-a-coup-for-gm-cheveldayoff/ https://briefnews.eu/jets-surprise-deal-for-stastny-a-coup-for-gm-cheveldayoff/#respond Tue, 27 Feb 2018 01:00:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jets-surprise-deal-for-stastny-a-coup-for-gm-cheveldayoff/ The top six teams heading into the final six weeks of the NHL season played an impressive game of Keeping Up with the Joneses in the days, hours and minutes leading up to the trade deadline.

After the Boston Bruins (Rick Nash, Brian Gionta) and Toronto Maple Leafs (Tomas Plekanec) beefed up over the weekend, the Nashville Predators (Ryan Hartman), Vegas Golden Knights (Tomas Tatar), Tampa Bay Lightning (Ryan McDonagh, J.T. Miller) and Winnipeg Jets (Paul Stastny, Joe Morrow) improved their respective lineups on Monday.

The biggest deal of the day, one that saw 18 trades involving 37 players, was the McDonagh and Miller move from the New York Rangers to the Lightning in exchange for Vladislav Namestnikov, junior prospects Brett Howden and Libor Hajek, a 2018 first-round pick and a conditional 2019 second-round selection.

But the most intriguing move was the Jets landing Stastny from the St. Louis Blues for a 2018 first-round pick, a conditional 2019 fourth-round choice and Providence College third-year left wing Erik Foley.

St. Louis will receive a fourth-round pick if Foley doesn’t sign an entry-level deal with the Blues before Aug. 15, 2019.

The hockey world was abuzz the last week or so with names that could be on the move, such as McDonagh, Evander Kane — who wound up with the San Jose Sharks — and defencemen Mike Green and Erik Karlsson, both who stayed put in Detroit and Ottawa, respectively.

But nobody mentioned Paul Stastny, especially with the Blues still in the hunt for a playoff spot despite only winning three of their past 11 outings entering Monday night.

According to Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, St. Louis GM Doug Armstrong sent his Winnipeg counterpart a text over the weekend to measure his interest if Stastny was made available.

Waived no-trade clause

Sure, the 32-year-old Stastny is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, but he had a full no-trade clause in his contract. The Jets and Blues worked out the particulars of the trade on Sunday evening. Now the big question was would Stastny want to leave home in St. Louis for a chance to move to a contender in Winnipeg?

He said yes. His friend and Jets captain Blake Wheeler played a role in convincing Stastny. They played together during the 2012-13 lockout in Munich and on the 2014 United States Olympic team.

“The opportunity to contend was more attractive than anything I was going to say,” said Wheeler, trying to downplay his contributions.

Stastny and Wheeler could end up linemates, but in the meantime, the new addition not only strengthens the Jets up front, his presence gives this rather green playoff team some post-season experience. Stastny has played in 55 career playoff games, including a trip to the West final two years ago.

It was four years ago that McDonagh pushed the Rangers into the Stanley Cup final against the Chicago Blackhawks. Among the finalists, McDonagh played the second-most minutes per game at 26:49. Only Chicago’s Duncan Keith was on the ice more at 27:49.

McDonagh’s arrival in Tampa Bay addresses its weak spot, its depth on defence. He’s only 28 and will be a nice fit anchoring the Lightning’s second pairing behind Victor Hedman and Anton Stralman.

The move was yet another solid one in Hockey Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman’s career as an executive.

He has won a world championship as Canada’s GM in 2007, a Stanley Cup as vice-president of the 2007-08 Detroit Red Wings and two Olympic gold medals as Canada’s executive director in 2010 and 2014.

In Tampa, he made a deft trade in moving a disgruntled Martin St. Louis four years ago and convinced Steven Stamkos to re-sign with the Lightning two years ago when he was on the verge of becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Now we’ll see if the moves from Yzerman or Cheveldayoff, or someone else at the deadline, will be enough.
