Israel is popular with many young travellers, being a hub for Gay Pride every year as well as having a bustling nightlife and beach city vibe, and will even host Eurovision in 2019.

The national carrier El Al has recently launched direct flights to Israel from Manchester, while easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways fly directly to Tel Aviv from London.

Many may no realise, however, that the capital city Jerusalem is less than an hour from Tel Aviv, lending itself to an easy day visit.

A long weekend could easily make a two city break to appease the whole family, with the modern city to the ancient walls.

Tel Aviv is certainly a young person’s city, with holes in the wall serving street food and drinks late into the night. While not cheap, there are a number of ‘bracelet’ bars, which is when a package can be bought, often for the price of two drinks, which allows unlimited alcohol all night. Their happy hour also differs to the UK: while it is often between 6pm and 8pm, once purchased, half-price drinks can be enjoyed all night.

Bars such as Sputnik, an outdoor steampunk-meets-jungle vibe, and Aria are some of the more upmarket joints, while Rutina is one for the cheap deals and Beer Bazaar offers a range of beers on the corner of the street.

While the nightlife is certainly what the city prides itself on, it doesn’t hide the history of the city. There was not much to it up until 1909.

With the 66 families based in Jaffa, the south of the city, over the next few years, 4,000 Bauhaus architecture buildings were assembled, similarly to the architecture in Berlin and Rio de Janerio.

With ‘Tel’ meaning old, this represents the ancient Roman, Greek and Turkish heritage, while ‘Aviv’ means the time it was established which was in the spring, representing new life.

This amalgamation of new and old best represents the city, which is best explored along the seafront.

Stay at the newly opened The Lighthouse hotel (prices from £124 per night) or Hotel Saul (prices from £102 per night) to be in the centre of the city.

Explore the seafront, which is regulated to ensure all prices are the same at each join, with the LA startup Bird, electric scooters that locals zip past on.

Whizz along the promenade down to Jaffa, where the markets and cafes are best explored for the best falafel wraps or local homewares.

However, spot the crowd at Hakosem where falafel pittas and pomegranate lemonade are worth the wait, and the cost.

When the busy city becomes too much, it is time to head out to Jerusalem. While the crowds are no less in number, the history of the ancient city is one to be explored.

Less than an hour by road and a simple route, walking through any of the gates of the ancient walls is taking a step back in time.

The Western Wall is where many go to pray, and people write their notes to put into the wall, although no photographs or pens are allowed near this area during Shabbat, the day of rest for Jewish people.

Even for the strictest of atheists, it can be hard not to get swept up in the old city and all that it represents.

Just outside of the walls, however, is the Holocaust Museum. Tastefully done, the free museum conveys the depths of the Jewish genocide, exploring the years before and how it came to create the sentiment that spread through WWII, as well as the aftermath.

A visit to Israel is also not without a visit to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth.

The Dead Sea, along the Israel-Jordan border, is somewhat hard to see off-the-beaten-track, with most points only pay-to-enter.

However, once down there, using the clay mud and floating in the water is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tourists are warned against wearing contact lenses or having open wounds due to the high salt content in the water.

Enjoying the unusual sensation before leaving to soft skin is a trip all of the family will enjoy, however.

By experiencing the two cities, both offering something of the Israeli history as well as a combination of beach-city and historical sites means it can please even the fussiest of travellers.

Israel ‘abducts’ Palestinian governor of East Jerusalem & intel chief suspected of ‘kidnapping’ https://briefnews.eu/israel-abducts-palestinian-governor-of-east-jerusalem-intel-chief-suspected-of-kidnapping/ https://briefnews.eu/israel-abducts-palestinian-governor-of-east-jerusalem-intel-chief-suspected-of-kidnapping/#respond Mon, 22 Oct 2018 04:42:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/israel-abducts-palestinian-governor-of-east-jerusalem-intel-chief-suspected-of-kidnapping/ Israel has confirmed detaining two senior Palestinian officials in charge of running Jerusalem’s affairs and suspected of aiding a kidnapping. The Palestinian leadership has condemned the detention as a “crime” and “abduction.”

The detention of the Palestinian Authority Governor of Jerusalem, Adnan Ghaith, and the arrest of Jihad Fakih, Palestinian intelligence chief in the holy city, was confirmed by Israeli authorities on Sunday. Without providing exact details or the reasoning behind the arrests, the police spokesman noted, that Ghaith and Fakih are now being interrogated. The duo is currently being held at the Jerusalem Police Headquarters.

The military court has reportedly extended Ghaith’s detention until Tuesday, while Colonel Fakih has been confined until Wednesday.

While the authorities have yet to officially charge either of the officials, according to their lawyer, the Palestinians are being held on suspicions of aiding an abduction of a Palestinian resident of Jerusalem. Both Ghaith and Fakih deny the allegations.

A ‘kidnapped Palestinian resident’, reported to have both an Israeli ID and US citizenship, has allegedly been held in the West Bank for over a week. Palestinian authorities allegedly sought to detain the man for helping to sell an Arab home in the Old City to an Israeli owner. The US embassy acknowledged it was aware of reports a citizen was in detention, but refused to elaborate, due to privacy issues.

According to reports, Ghaith was abducted in Jerusalem’s Beit Hanina neighborhood on Saturday night by special units of the Israeli police, who stopped the governor’s car then drove away in an unknown direction with the official. The Colonel, according to Wafa, was detained at an Israeli military checkpoint in al-Judeira village in northwestern Jerusalem.

“The arrest of Geith and Fakih is a new crime against the Palestinian people,” the PA government said in a statement. “It’s also a crime against the Palestinian leadership and our eternal capital, the occupied Arab city of Jerusalem.”

  • Indonesia may be considering killing off a trade deal with Australia after it raised the idea of moving its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem.
  • Morrison told reporters he was “open-minded” on moving Australia’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
  • The statement provoked Indonesia, has the largest Muslim population in the world, no formal diplomatic ties with Israel, and strongly supports the notion of Palestinian statehood, a senior Indonesian Government source told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Indonesia may be considering killing off a trade deal with Australia after it raised the idea of moving its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem.

Morrison met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo met in September to discuss regional strategy, and announced they had concluded longstanding discussions towards a free trade deal between them. The deal, signed during Morrison’s inaugural trip as Prime Minister, was set to be signed before the end of the year and would secure lower tariffs on certain goods.

Palestine takes US to International Court of Justice over Jerusalem embassy move https://briefnews.eu/palestine-takes-us-to-international-court-of-justice-over-jerusalem-embassy-move/ https://briefnews.eu/palestine-takes-us-to-international-court-of-justice-over-jerusalem-embassy-move/#respond Sat, 29 Sep 2018 03:04:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/palestine-takes-us-to-international-court-of-justice-over-jerusalem-embassy-move/ The Palestinian authority has asked the International Court of Justice to compel the US to shut down its embassy in Jerusalem, because it violates the Vienna convention, which says an embassy must be located in a host country.

The Palestinian government submitted its application to launch proceedings against the US on Friday. The 14-page complaint, released by the UN’s principal judicial body, alleges that the US, as a party of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, has flouted its obligation by setting up an embassy outside the territory of the host state, Israel.

It points out that, in accordance with the 1947 UN Plan for Palestine and numerous subsequent UN resolutions to the same effect, Jerusalem should be placed under an international regime as a “separate body” or “corpus separatum.” Instead, Israel illegally took control over Jerusalem by “use of force” and a series of legislative and administrative means “in an attempt to annex the city.” Thus, the US had no right to open its embassy there.

“The relocation of the United States embassy in Israel to the Holy City of Jerusalem constitutes a breach of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 18 April 1961.”

The Palestinian suit is calling on the court to declare the US embassy move in violation of international diplomatic law and order Washington “to withdraw the diplomatic mission” from the city.

The US opened its embassy in Jerusalem in May after US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize the city as Israel’s capital in December. The move has drawn a fierce backlash – including from some of America’s allies in Europe – and was met with mass protests in Palestine and across the Arab world.

The Palestinian government’s complaint cites the recent decision by Paraguay to return its embassy to Tel Aviv, cancelling the right-wing government’s previous decision.

Palestine was granted non-member observer status at the UN in 2012. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas recently indicated he is willing to go both to the International Criminal Court (ICC), which effectively serves as a war crime tribunal, and the International Court of Justice over the US policy, as well as alleged war crimes by Israel, such as ethnic cleansing, forcible evictions and demolition of Palestinian homes.

Apart from the embassy issue, Abbas said that he would sue the US over its decision to defund the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

In May, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry appealed to the ICC to launch an inquiry into Israeli “crimes against humanity” and its rampant construction of illegal settlements as well as other violations of the international law, including the killing of Palestinian protesters. The US has vowed to shield its ally Israel from criminal prosecution, threatening to sanction ICC judges and shutting down the offices of the Palestinian Liberation Organization in Washington, DC, in retaliation.

US ‘strongly encourages’ Paraguay not to move its embassy from Jerusalem back to Tel Aviv https://briefnews.eu/us-strongly-encourages-paraguay-not-to-move-its-embassy-from-jerusalem-back-to-tel-aviv/ https://briefnews.eu/us-strongly-encourages-paraguay-not-to-move-its-embassy-from-jerusalem-back-to-tel-aviv/#respond Fri, 07 Sep 2018 01:51:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-strongly-encourages-paraguay-not-to-move-its-embassy-from-jerusalem-back-to-tel-aviv/ Washington has urged Asuncion to think twice about the “historic relationship” between the US, Israel and Paraguay, and reconsider the decision to move the country’s Israeli embassy back to Tel Aviv.

After Paraguay announced the embassy move plans, Vice President Mike Pence was quick to get President Mario Abdo Benitez on the line. “The Vice President strongly encouraged President Abdo Benitez to follow through with Paraguay’s previous commitment to move the embassy as a sign of the historic relationship the country has maintained with both Israel and the United States,” the White House said in a statement on Thursday.

In May, Paraguay joined a tiny list of countries who have opted to follow US’ suit in moving their embassies in wake of Donald Trump’s recognition of the Holy City as the capital of the Jewish State.

On former President Horacio Cartes’ orders, Paraguay’s embassy officially moved to Jerusalem on May 21, less than a week after United States relocated its mission. Guatemala also relocated their diplomatic mission to the city which the Jewish nation views as its historic capital.

Yet despite the move, which was well-received by the Israeli politicians at the time, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Abdo Benitez, who took office in August, decided to reverse the relocation. In retaliation, Israel announced that it will close its embassy in the South American country.

The new president however rushed to defend his choice stressing that “Paraguay is a country of principles,” which strives to achieve “broad, lasting and just peace” between Israelis and Palestinians by following international law.

Amid massive disapproval from the Jewish community, the Arab League applauded Asuncion’s choice, while the Palestinian Authority branded Paraguay’s decision a “diplomatic achievement,” promising to “immediately” open its representation in the Latin American country.

Argentina pulls out of pre-World Cup friendly with Israel in Jerusalem amid Palestinian outcry https://briefnews.eu/argentina-pulls-out-of-pre-world-cup-friendly-with-israel-in-jerusalem-amid-palestinian-outcry/ https://briefnews.eu/argentina-pulls-out-of-pre-world-cup-friendly-with-israel-in-jerusalem-amid-palestinian-outcry/#respond Wed, 06 Jun 2018 00:37:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/argentina-pulls-out-of-pre-world-cup-friendly-with-israel-in-jerusalem-amid-palestinian-outcry/ A friendly match between the Argentinian and Israeli squads, set to take place in Jerusalem on Saturday, was nixed after Palestinians called out the team for “whitewashing” Israeli occupation and the crackdown against protesters.

Pressure for the football match to be cancelled has been rising since last week, with Palestinian activists staging protests near the prospective venue in West Jerusalem and sport officials penning letters to the Argentinian authorities, asking them to revise the decision in light of the recent deadly Gaza clashes and Israel’s insistence on holding the game in Jerusalem.

While there has been no official word on the fate of the match so far, Argentinian striker Gonzalo Higuain appeared to confirm the news while speaking to ESPN on Tuesday.

“They’ve finally done the right thing,” he said, referring to the Argentine Football Association’s apparent decision to scrap the game, which was scheduled to be the Lionel Messi-led team’s last warm-up before it takes the pitch at the World Cup in Russia next week.

In a statement on Monday, the Palestinian Football Association threatened to thwart Argentina’s bid to host the World Cup in 2030, if the game takes place as planned.

“The Palestinian Football Family calls upon the Argentinian Football association, and the Argentinian national team, to refrain from being used, by politicians in the Israeli Government, as a tool to normalize the illegal annexation of Occupied East Jerusalem, and to whitewash the Israeli systematic violations of international law and human rights,” the association said in a strongly-worded statement.

Last week, The association’s chief, Jibril Rajoub, launched a personal broadside at Argentine’s biggest star, Messi. Noting that the forward “has tens of millions of fans in the Arab and Muslim countries,” Rajoub went as far as to call on this multi-million army to “burn their shirts which bear his name and posters” unless the Argentinian refuses to partake in the game.

The calls for the Argentinian team to withdraw were echoed by Arab Israeli MPs, with Israeli Knesset member Yousef Jabareen (Joint List) meeting with the Argentinian ambassador to Israel last Friday. The MP said that by agreeing to play in Jerusalem, the Argentinian footballers would condone the “gross human rights violations” by the Israeli government while emboldening it further with a “dangerous message.”

As the cancellation emerged as the most likely option, the issue was raised at the highest intergovernmental level. It was reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Argentinian President Mauricio Macri, asking him to throw his support behind the match.

However, Macri reportedly told Netanyahu that the final decision was out of his reach, Haaretz reported.

The match was originally set to take place at the Sammy Ofer Stadium in Haifa. However, the Israeli authorities recently moved the game to Jerusalem’s Teddy Stadium, even though it has fewer seats.

British diplomats to use US Embassy in Jerusalem despite opposing relocation – report https://briefnews.eu/british-diplomats-to-use-us-embassy-in-jerusalem-despite-opposing-relocation-report/ https://briefnews.eu/british-diplomats-to-use-us-embassy-in-jerusalem-despite-opposing-relocation-report/#respond Wed, 23 May 2018 02:35:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/british-diplomats-to-use-us-embassy-in-jerusalem-despite-opposing-relocation-report/ The UK diplomats in Israel will do their business with Americans through the newly-inaugurated embassy in Jerusalem, a UK minister reportedly said. The UK snubbed the grand opening, voicing criticism over the move.

While being the US’ closest European ally, Britain joined the international community in boycotting the unveiling ceremony of the US Embassy in Jerusalem last week, which spurred violent clashes between Palestinian protesters and the Israeli army at the Gaza border. At least 60 people were killed in the altercation, including a baby that reportedly choked to death from tear gas, the Gaza Health Ministry said.

The protests, which left over 2,000 people injured, became the deadliest day in Gaza since 2014. The UK sided with the international outcry, calling on the Israeli forces to show restraint in quelling the unrest while denouncing the US decision. “We continue to believe that is playing the wrong card at the wrong time,” UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said at the time.

However, it has now been revealed that what was seen as the UK’s bid to defy its main ally may have been short-lived. A mere three days later, UK Middle East Minister Alistair Burt reportedly told members of the British Palestinian Policy Council that the UK is not ready to go as far as to refuse visits to the US embassy altogether.

“When we asked him to confirm [that] UK officials would not attend meetings at the embassy going forward, as the UK does not recognize it, he was very clear that they would attend,” a source who was present at the meeting with Burt told the Middle East Eye.

Apart from the US, only two other countries, Guatemala and Paraguay, followed the US’ lead and moved their embassies to Jerusalem, which Israel considers to be its “united and undivided” capital, a notion that has found no support from the international community. As with the majority of the countries, the UK backs the two-state solution in which Jerusalem is envisaged as a shared capital of the states of Israel and Palestine.

A pro-Palestinian protest in Istanbul on Monday.

Controversy over the UK’s plans to allow its diplomats to visit the US Embassy in Jerusalem is another ambiguous signal from London over the recent developments in the Palestinian-Israeli standoff. On Friday, the UK abstained from a UN Human Rights Council vote to launch a war crimes probe into the brutal crackdown on Palestinian protesters by Israel. Only two countries, the US and Australia, voted against the resolution. The decision was slammed by shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry,  Labour Party, who said she was “disgusted” that the UK government did not support the independent investigation.

The way Britain went from standing up to the US to pandering to US President Donald Trump in just a few days screams of hypocrisy, Peter Ford, former UK ambassador to Syria, said. He rejected the argument that by maintaining contacts with the US Embassy in Jerusalem, the UK can have better leverage with Washington.

“I would personally totally reject that. I think it’s laughable, the idea that British diplomats in Tel Aviv by trotting up to meet American diplomats in Jerusalem can have any influence over that embassy which is in the stewardship of the American ambassador, who is very extreme, is laughable,” Ford said.

The former diplomat argued that things would be very different had it not been the US that moved its embassy, but Russia.

“Would the British position be to continue doing business with it? No way. There would have been horrified exclamations, legal arguments would have been found to justify Britain’s position of having nothing to do with this Russian embassy. It’s double standards.”

The UK’s inability to back up its words with deeds further emboldens Trump and sets a dangerous precedent in light of the US exit from the Iran nuclear deal, he noted.

“It’s a missed opportunity. It makes it look like Trump is able to bully his way past the Europeans and that’s a very bad precedent in the context with Iran.”

Israeli police use stun grenades against ultra-Orthodox rioters in Jerusalem https://briefnews.eu/israeli-police-use-stun-grenades-against-ultra-orthodox-rioters-in-jerusalem/ https://briefnews.eu/israeli-police-use-stun-grenades-against-ultra-orthodox-rioters-in-jerusalem/#respond Mon, 16 Apr 2018 15:44:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/israeli-police-use-stun-grenades-against-ultra-orthodox-rioters-in-jerusalem/

Israeli police launched stun grenades at hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem, who were protesting against plans to arrest a female draft-dodger.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said that law-enforcement units dispersed rioters ‘with stun grenades’ after four policemen sustained minor injuries in clashes.

The protests were triggered by the decision to arrest an ultra-Orthodox girl for not presenting herself to deal with her draft notice. The decision triggered public outrage and hundreds took to the streets to riot outside the IDF draft office in Jerusalem on Sunday night.

One of the strongest military powers in the Middle East, Israel requires both men and women to serve in the military upon reaching the age of 18. While men are supposed to serve for two years and eight months, women are expected to serve for two years. That law, however, does not apply to ultra-Orthodox Jews. As members of a radical fringe of the religious population, ultra-Orthodox men can be excused from military service on condition that they are engaged in religious study. Young men must report to the army to receive a deferral of service, which Jerusalem faction leaders have defied and some seminary students have refused to do also.

The issue of the ultra-Orthodox exemption from military service was brought up again in March and resulted in a clash of opinions which almost brought down the right-wing government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The government compromised by offering controversial legislation that allows ultra-Orthodox Jews to be largely exempt from enlisting in the IDF.

Known for strictly observing the rules of Judaism in all aspects of daily and spiritual life, the ultra-Orthodox vowed to “fearlessly defend the walls of true Judaism” and continue serving their society through prayer.

The reason for the girl’s arrest was her ‘not religious’ appearance which does not conform with the strict ultra-Orthodox rules, ultra-Orthodox newspaper, Behadrei Haredim, reported. Judging by her Facebook photos, in which she wore ‘revealing clothing,’ she did not appear to show that she outwardly adhered to a religious lifestyle and was therefore suspected of draft-dodging, the paper said.
