Stock up on batteries, candles, and non-perishable snacks. Blackouts are coming.
For the first time in decades, the western world is preparing for widespread and rolling energy shortages. The US, UK, and EU have all been squeezed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, soaring costs for electricity and fuel, and record-breaking heat waves. While fall is just around the corner, the worst of the energy strain is likely still to come.
Even wealthy nations won't be spared, at least without broad broad policy change and private-sector overhauls. Add in the accompanying economic costs and extreme health risks, and you have a very difficult situation.
In California, it will materialize as outage warnings and restrictions on your air conditioning. Then in coming years, Texans, Illinoisans, and Missourians will join the suffering of their west coast peers amid sweltering heat and rolling blackouts.
And across Europe and the UK, residents not used to heat waves will either face skyrocketing energy bills or dangerously hot summers — a situation made worse by their reliance on Russian gas, the flow of which has been essentially cut off entirely.
Amid record-high temperatures on the west coast Tuesday afternoon, California's grid operator ISO urged residents to limit their energy use and cautioned that rolling blackouts could arrive.
Reddit user u/ZachTF
The text alert worked. Emergency precautions lifted at 8 pm PT without the need for widespread blackouts. The utility added that residents' energy conservation "played a big part" in bolstering the grid's reliability.
The relief was short-lived. Just 15 hours later, the ISO issued another alert calling on residents to use less energy throughout the afternoon. Californians were encouraged to avoid using large appliances, unplug unused electronics, and set their thermostats no lower than 78 degrees.
"I can't keep doing this," Twitter user @sdfashionista3 wrote in response to the ISO on Thursday morning. "Been in San Diego my entire life never seen the temp this high at night even during a Santa Ana."
And while the ISO's Tuesday alert helped stave off rolling blackouts, more than 50,000 Californians experienced some form of a power outage that afternoon, according to data from poweroutage.us.
The strain on California's power grid can be traced directly to climate change. Average temperatures have risen faster than residents' heat tolerance, meaning Californians are running their air conditioning significantly longer than they did just years ago. Yet utilities companies and regulators haven't bolstered the power grid accordingly, and soaring demand for electricity has pushed that infrastructure to the edge.
"Fossil-fuel based electricity has traditionally been seen as the most reliable," Romany Webb, an associate research scholar at Columbia Law School and senior fellow at the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, told Insider. "But the combination of gas being in shorter supply and more expensive, combined with these climate impacts, highlight that that's really no longer the case."
The alerts, while helpful on Tuesday, underscore the looming threat facing California and other states with hotter climates. Roughly 8 million Americans are already expected to experience temperatures above 125 degrees in 2022, levels deemed to pose "extreme danger," according to the National Weather Service. That count is expected to reach 107 million people in 2053 as climate change powers higher and higher temperatures, according to new research from First Street Foundation.
California won't be alone. All of Illinois and Missouri are set to feature 125 degree days by 2053, the foundation found. Parts of 23 other states will land in the belt.
Without massive investment in overhauling the country's energy grid, such heat waves could knock out power across states for days on end. That endangers millions who can't afford to cool down with a generator or a pool. A lack of power will also lead to widespread food spoilage as freezers and refrigerators shut down.
First Street Foundation
Countless business owners will be forced to close up shop, and those staying open won't get much traffic as Americans focus on beating the heat.
Americans requiring powered medical devices will be in the most immediate danger, especially as blackouts can come at a moment's notice.
"If we don't accelerate our action to mitigate climate change and prepare for the climate change that's already happening, we're likely to see more of these outages and have a less reliable grid," Webb said.
The EU and UK's energy problem has far more to do with their dependence on Russia. While the US can largely rely on its own energy commodities for power despite its struggles with its antiquated electric grid, western Europe leans heavily on Moscow for its natural gas and crude oil to keep prices steady.
The relationship, while rocky, lasted for several decades. That ended when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and sparked intense backlash from the West. The EU and UK quickly levied sanctions on Russia's energy sector, unveiling plans to quickly reduce their purchases of Russian goods and find those commodities elsewhere.
The pivot hasn't been an easy one. Western Europe has struggled with energy shortages throughout the year, and summer heat exacerbated the problem. Crippling heat waves emerged in the UK, Spain, Portugal, and France, with all-time-high temperatures causing large wildfires and thousands of deaths.
The hot spell was particularly dangerous because many affected countries "are not really trained to deal with the heat," George Havenith, Professor of Environmental Physiology and Ergonomics of Loughborough University, recently told Insider.
The heat wave has since eased somewhat, but Russia's retaliation to energy embargoes kicked off a new stage of pain. The UK and EU haven't fully weaned themselves off of Russian gas yet, leaving energy in shorter supply as the Kremlin cuts off westward flows.
That's left residents paying up for their everyday power needs. Britain's energy regulator lifted its cap on annual energy bills to £3,549 — about $ 4,189 — starting October 1, nearly doubling the previous limit and up 178% from last winter.
The hike presents low-income Britons with an impossible choice: go into debt to maintain their basic energy use, or endure a blazing hot summer and frigid winter rife with blackouts and health hazards.
Immediate solutions are few and far between, but as climate change rages on, the impetus to reinforce electrical grids with renewable power and efficient energy storage grows stronger.
"Unless we recognize the serious risks that climate change poses to our electrical system, we're likely to see more of these reliability issues," Webb said. "It's imperative that regulators, electric utilities, and system operators recognize that climate change is here."

With Mike Richards‘ two-week stint as Jeopardy! guest host concluding on Friday, we’re offering up fans of the iconic game show something of a Sophie’s Choice: Who would you rather see behind the lectern full-time, Richards or inaugural interim emcee Ken Jennings?
Since his run began on Feb. 22, Richards — who doubles as Jeopardy!‘s exec producer — won over social media with his movie-star looks, warm demeanor and magnetic charm. The positive reviews are all the more impressive when you consider that the onetime Pyramid host was an 11th hour pick.
“I didn’t know I was going to be doing it until three days before, and so I had not prepared myself to host in the way that I know other guest hosts are,” Richards recently told USA Today. “So there was just a lot to unpack.
“Plus, I also only owned one suit, so there was a little bit of scrambling there,” he added. “It was very fun; humbling doesn’t begin to describe the feeling. It hit me like a ton of bricks when Johnny Gilbert announced my name. That’s of course the last thing you hear when you start to walk out. … and it was overwhelming in the moment.”
Richards picked up the guest-hosting baton from GOAT contestant Jennings, whose similarly well-received six-week tenure ended in mid-February. Jennings, in turn, on Monday will hand the gig off to Katie Couric. The former Today co-host will then be followed by NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers, 60 Minutes‘ Bill Whitaker and Big Bang Theory vet Mayim Bialik. Additional guest hosts will include CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Dr. Sanjay Gupta., as well as Dr. Mehmet Oz and Today‘s Savannah Guthrie.
Meanwhile, a decision on who will succeed the late Alex Trebek permanently may not be made until the launch of Season 38 next September. As Richards told USA Today, “Let’s make sure we get someone we are going to feel even better about in a decade than we do this year.”
Did Richards prove himself worthy of the full-time job? Or more pointedly, if it comes down to Richards vs. Jennings, who would you choose? Vote below!

Jeopardy!‘s Alex Trebek era came to a close on Friday with the game show airing the late host’s final episode. Trebek — who taped his last episode in late October, just 10 days before his death — ended the show with his traditional send-off, which indicates he did not know it would be his farewell. “Thank you ladies and gentlemen for spending the time with us,” he said. “We’ll see you again next week.”
Friday’s episode, which was originally scheduled to air on Christmas Day, also included a retrospective of Trebek’s 37 years as host.
Trebek died on Nov. 8 after a nearly two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 80.
Last January, Trebek revealed that he had already thought through what his final sign-off would look like. “It’ll be a significant moment for me,” Trebek said. “But I’ve kind of in my mind rehearsed it already. And what I would do on that day is tell the director, ‘Time the show down to leave me 30 seconds at the end, that’s all I want.’ And I will say my goodbyes.
“I will tell people, ‘Don’t ask me who’s going to replace me, because I have no say in that whatsoever,’” Trebek continued. “‘But I’m sure that if you give them the same love and attention and respect that you’ve shown me for the past thirty-however-many years, then they will be a success and the show will continue being a success. And until we meet again, God bless you, and goodbye.’”
Beginning Monday, Jan. 11, Jeopardy! G.O.A.T. contestant Ken Jennings will step in for Trebek as the first in a series of interim guest hosts. Former Today co-host Katie Couric will also reportedly serve a week-long stint as guest host.

Katie Couric is reportedly ringing in as Jeopardy!‘s latest guest host.
According to the L.A. Times, the former network news giant will take the interim hosting reins for one week, succeeding the late Alex Trebek, whose final episode airs Friday, Jan. 8. A Jeopardy! spokesperson declined to confirm the Couric news.
Couric’s week-long stint will presumably follow that of fellow interim guest host Ken Jennings, who is set to take center stage on Monday, Jan. 11. Jennings, of course, has been mired in numerous controversies of late involving, among other things, his “unartful and insensitive” Twitter history.
Jennings’ ascension to guest host was foreshadowed last September when he joined the iconic game show as a consulting producer. In that new role, he presented his own special video categories, developed projects, assisted with contestant outreach, and served as a general ambassador for the show.
Trebek, who died on Nov. 8 after a nearly two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, kicked off his final week of shows on Monday by delivering a posthumous plea to viewers about the importance of showing love and compassion to those individuals impacted by COVID-19.
“This is the season of giving,” Trebek said at the top of Monday’s episode (watch video here). “I know you want to be generous with your family, your friends, your loved ones. But today I’d like you to go one step further. I’d like you to open up your hands and open up your heart to those who are still suffering because of COVID-19 — people who are suffering through no fault of their own. We’re trying to build a gentler, kinder society. If we all pitch in just a little bit, we’re gonna get there.”

On Friday, Jan. 8, legendary Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek — who died Nov. 8 after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer — will make his final appearance on the iconic game show. I am definitely not ready to say goodbye.
While I appreciate the fact that Sony Pictures Television prolonged the inevitable by scheduling two weeks of curated reruns over the holidays (Trebek’s last airdate was originally slated for Dec. 25), I now find myself wishing and hoping for another continuance.
Trebek is partly to blame for the state of denial I find myself in. In the episodes that aired immediately following his death, I found myself hyper-attuned to his physical and mental state, searching for clues that he was nearing the end of his cancer battle. But with each passing pre-taped episode, I found none.
As podcaster/comedian/onetime Jeopardy! contestant Louis Virtel so acutely observed on Twitter in early December, “Is anyone tabulating the emotional toll of watching Alex Trebek still do a tremendous job and tell us ‘See you next time!’ every night? It’s comforting and gutting every single time.”
Unlike Virtel and so many longtime Trebek acolytes, my affection for the TV legend does not date back to my childhood. I did not watch Jeopardy! as a kid. Or even as a young adult. Sure, I caught the occasional episode — typically while visiting my maternal grandparents, who never missed Jeopardy! or time slot sidekick Wheel of Fortune. But it was by no means a steady part of my TV repertoire.
That changed in 2014 when my husband’s own battle with cancer neared its conclusion. His parents were staying with us and every night the four of us would gather to watch Jeopardy! and Wheel. The routine proved to be an essential crisis panacea.
I turned to the soothing syndicated elixir again this past spring when the Trump-inflamed collision of COVID-19 and the murder of George Floyd made for a perfect storm of anger, sadness and hopelessness. Amid a steady stream of apocalyptic New York Times email alerts, I could count on Trebek’s steady, wise, reassuring presence to calm my fraying nerves.
And to remind me of my intellectual blindspots.
It’s odd that I get so much pleasure from watching Jeopardy! considering I am so aggressively terrible at PLAYING Jeopardy! Sure, I tend to do well with the TV-themed categories, but if the topic concerns anything of actual importance — like world history or geography or who invented cotton swabs — I’m typically at a loss.
Of course, that never stops me from loudly and confidently solving every single clue Trebek reads aloud like a cut-for-time SNL skit. The question involves a war, you say? I’ll cockily provide the name of said war before a single contestant buzzes in. Will it be the correct war? No. Will I even be in the right hemisphere or even century? Eh, probably not. Will I bounce back from the humiliating setback quickly enough to attack the next clue with the same level of misplaced bravado? You betcha.
Jeopardy! EP Mike Richards has said that Trebek’s super-human powers will continue to be on full display in his final five episodes (the first of which airs this Monday), even though those episodes were shot less than two weeks before his death — and despite the fact that he was, as Richards acknowledged, “in pain” at the time.
Will we see glimpses of the suffering he thus far has so miraculously shielded viewers from? Selfishly, I hope not. If at all possible, I would very much like to remain in denial through his final Jeopardy! sign-off. The harsh reality can hit me at 7 pm on Monday, Jan. 11, when interim host Ken Jennings takes the stage instead of Trebek. I’ll hopefully be ready by then.

The Chase is very much on for ABC, now that the network has officially ordered to series an adaptation of the popular UK quiz show.
In The Chase, which originated across the pond on ITV in 2009, four contestants work for the benefit of the team as they face “The Chaser,” a “ruthless quiz genius who is determined to stop them winning at all costs” (as described by UKGameShows.com).
As previously rumored, Jeopardy! GOATs James Holzhauer, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter are now double-secret confirmed to take turns as The Chaser, who challenges the players to think faster than they ever thought possible. (The trio’s head-to-head-to-head battle in ABC’s multi-night Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time tournament way, way, wayyyyy back in January scored huge numbers for the broadcast network, delivering north of 15 million total viewers at one point and above a 2.0 demo rating.)
The View‘s Sara Haines, meanwhile, has been tapped to serve as host. A premiere date will be announced at a later date.
With some slight gameplay tweaks, The Chase was first adapted for U.S. audiences in 2013 by Game Show Network. Brooke Burns hosted and English quizzer Mark Labbett served as “The Chaser,” who was also nicknamed “The Beast.” Holzhauer appeared on that version, setting records for both the early Cash Builder round and the Final Chase (in which he contributed 19 of his team’s 26 correct answers, compared to The Beast’s six).
ABC’s The Chase is produced by ITV America’s ITV Entertainment, with Adam Sher, Bernie Schaeffer and Vin Rubino serving as executive producers.

And following the reports, bookmakers Ladbrokes has slashed its odds on the highly-anticipated series of I’m A Celebrity to be scrapped.
Odds on the show’s cancellation now stand at just 2/1 – before Mr Johnson has even made any official announcement.
Ladbrokes spokesperson Jessica O’Reilly said: “It looks like it’s going to be touch and go for ITV bosses,
“And despite all the money spent getting this year’s show off the ground, it could still fall at the final hurdle.”

With season 11 being brought to an earlier expected close, Mac still has unfinished business with Sam and Callen (Chris O’Donnell).
Gemmill confirmed the new to TV Line earlier this year, stating: “Our guys get sucked back in to help Mac,
“And (they) find themselves racing against the clock to prevent Argento (Juan Riedinger), and those secretly working on his behalf, from getting away with murder.”
NCIS: Los Angeles season 12 premieres on CBS in late-2020.

What’s a Saturday Night Live Christmas episode without some “Ho, Ho, Hos” courtesy of the one and only Velvet Jones?
As part of host Eddie Murphy‘s veritable “Greatest Hits” performance, which earlier in the night brought back a hint of Bill Cosby, followed by Mr. Robinson, Buckwheat and Gumby, Velvet Jones popped up as a contestant on Black Jeopardy! — but struggled to fit into these modern times.
Because no matter the category or answer, Velvet’s every question segued into a promotion for one book of his or another, each promising its female reader the chance to make “$ 1,500 a week” — starting with the classic I Wanna Be a Ho, followed by How to Dance Like a Ho.
Velvet was repeatedly reprimanded by Black Jeopardy! host Darnell (Kenan Thompson) for his use of the H-word, only to zag the next time around by pimping the how-to guide Ass for Cash. (When Darnell brought up the #MeToo movement, Velvet feigned familiarity, responding, “You like hos? Me too!”)
After getting in a dig at Idris Elba’s Cats character (“How will he ever attract a good ho” without a three-piece suit, a tiny gold chain and long, processed hair?), Velvet used the final clue to seemingly get with the times and suggest a woman doesn’t need to have sex to make money… by reading his latest guide, How to Be an Instagram Ho.
Watch a classic Velvet Jones infomercial below, from Murphy’s original SNL reign:
