Moonlight director Barry Jenkins is back with another knockout drama: If Beale Street Could Talk, an adaptation of author James Baldwin’s celebrated novel. The film tells the story of Tish (KiKi Layne) and Fonny (Stephan James), a young black couple who are deeply in love and trying to make it in New York City in the 1970s. But when Fonny is falsely accused of rape, Tish is left to fight to clear his name – and fighting against systemic racism is never easy. (I encourage you to read our review from TIFF here.)
Last month, I sat down with Jenkins to talk about life post-Moonlight, how spontaneity and collaboration resulted in some of Beale Street’s most memorable moments, the challenge of adapting such a beloved novel, his work in television (including Dear White People and his upcoming adaptation of The Underground Railroad), and more. Read our full Barry Jenkins interview below.
Congratulations on this movie. It’s lovely and heartbreaking – I thought it was excellent. And congratulations on the success of Moonlight. I’m always curious about how directors’ lives change after a Best Picture Oscar. Have you noticed a significant shift in opportunities being available to you since then?
Yeah, definitely. What I like to say is, if I send an e-mail now, I actually know there will be a reply. Or if I leave a voicemail, somebody will return, which in this industry, in this town, your career is often geared around first trying to get people to say yes. Now I think my career is about trying to be very diligent and wise about how often to say no. That’s been the biggest change.
This movie is sensual in a way that most American movies aren’t. Is that feeling just something that’s baked into you as a storyteller? Where does that come from for you?
I’ve gotta say a couple things. I can’t say it’s baked into me as a storyteller. Both of these films [Beale Street and Moonlight] have been adaptations of other people’s work, James Baldwin and Tarell Alvin McCraney. So I think the credit must originate with them for creating these pieces that, one, speak to something very vital about American life, but without sacrificing the sensuality of everyday experience. I can’t say “unlike most American films.” You said that, not me.
(Laughs)
But I think it is something that we encounter in our everyday life. There are many different depictions of sensuality, so I see no reason to take that out of the work or to be afraid to revel in it, which I think, at times, in both these films, we do.
What kind of visual influences did you have for this one?
The biggest one for this – and [cinematographer] James [Laxton] was in Memphis yesterday giving a masterclass on cinematography and talking about this film in particular at Indie Memphis. He was saying, and I agree, is that the energy of James Baldwin, the way he writes – especially in this book – the detail with which he writes, was the primary source of inspiration. And then, the film is not a documentary, but we wanted to find references that really have fidelity to the experience of Harlem in the ‘60s and early ‘70s. We found that mostly in still photography and work by Roy DeCarava and Gordon Parks. So it was a blend of the lushness of Mr. Baldwin’s literal syntax, the way he constructs these sentences, and this beautiful photography of the period. It’s why the film is presented 2:1 as opposed to the more common aspect ratios of 1.85 or 2.35.
I think my favorite shot of the movie is of Tish and Fonny walking down a beautifully lit street under a red umbrella. They turn down a one way street – but they go the wrong way. Were those street signs in the script, or was that something that just happen while you were shooting?
See, this is what I love about making movies. All of that, it wasn’t an accident, but we didn’t bring in rain. It just poured rain that day. So there was not meant to be an umbrella. So much of the way we framed that was not meant to be. But even though this movie had more resources than Moonlight, it’s still a modest budget, so we had to work with the elements. So it just poured rain that day, so once we got to the setup, it was just like, “What’s the best way to film this gorgeous free rain that we have?” It was [actor] Diego [Luna] who was like, “paraguas,” which is how you say “umbrella” in Spanish. The whole thing just took on a life of its own.
As far as walking left vs. right, that road – I don’t know if you can tell in the film, but it kind of slopes down just a little bit, and I wanted them to walk uphill as opposed to walking down. So they went right instead of left.
That’s so cool that a moment like that which was unplanned sort of gives you more of a look into their intimacy. Just the way that he treats her, how they stand together.
To me, when you make a film or any kind of art, you have to be open to inspiration from the elements, from your collaborators. I think what I see in that scene that’s very lovely is, it’s one thing for them to walk down the street hand in hand. And this is somewhat patriarchal in a certain way, but for Fonny to hold this umbrella, there’s almost this nurturing quality to it. I think it makes the question he poses just that much more delicate, more intimate. “Will you come to my place?”
For sure. A lot of the movie is bathed in yellows and greens. Tell me about how you decided on the color palette.
Yeah, it was a really purely organic process of collaboration. In the run up to production, Mark Friedberg, the production designer, he would host these salons. It would be myself, Mark, Caroline Eselin the costume designer, and James Laxton our cinematographer, and we’d all just get together in Mark’s living room/kitchen, drink wine and eat hors d’oeuvres, and we’d just pass around color swatches or little still photos. Slowly, you saw us coalesce around these ideas. Not necessarily color blocking in an intellectual way – “this color means this, this color means that” – but you saw all of us really getting into color as a manifestation of how Tish feels. That became this series of golds and greens. These very warm, saturated colors. In the film, Tish is kind of in purgatory in a certain way. Fonny’s dealing with this ordeal, she’s bringing this child to term. But when she thinks of these moments, the walk in the rain or the first time they make love, that’s filtered through memory, and a very lush, beautiful memory. Almost a heightened depiction of what actually happened. As we had these salons, the colors started to assert themselves, and by the end of pre-production, it was very clear we were going to make this super saturated, vibrantly colored film. Very different than Moonlight.

Margot Robbie may be playing a Barbie girl in a Barbie world. The Oscar-nominated I, Tonya actress is in talks to star as the famous Mattel toy in a feature film possibly helmed by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins. Life in plastic may truly be fantastic.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Robbie is in talks to play the lead role in the long-gestating Barbie movie in development in Warner Bros. The studio is reportedly in early talks with Patty Jenkins, who helmed the wildly successful comic book film Wonder Woman and is currently directing its sequel Wonder Woman 1984, to direct the Barbie movie.
The studio picked up the project from Sony, which first announced in 2014 that it was partnering with Mattel to develop a Barbie feature film. In 2016, Amy Schumer was announced to star in the movie, which was billed as a subversive feminist twist on the classic Barbie story, following a Barbie who didn’t fit in with the impossibly high standards of the Barbie beauty ideals. However, Schumer dropped out of the project a few months later due to “scheduling conflicts,” and the project passed on to Anne Hathaway, who stepped into the lead role last year. The film was still wracked with scheduling problems until Sony dropped the project altogether, leaving it ripe for Warner Bros. to scoop it up.
It’s unclear whether the Warner Bros. version of the movie will follow the original logline of a Barbie out of step with the Barbie ideals, leading to her getting kicked out into the real world. Robbie is a talented actress with an underutilized comedic streak, but she still hews pretty closely to the Barbie standards of beauty. Even I, Tonya struggled to convince audiences that Robbie is anything but stunning. Then there’s Jenkins’ possible involvement as director. With Jenkins potentially on board, it’s possible that Warner Bros.’ yet-untitled Barbie movie won’t even be a comedy anymore. But what could this combination possibly produce? I have no idea. But both Robbie and Jenkins are gifted creatives, so any movie that teams them up goes immediately on my must-watch list.
Warner Bros. has not yet set a date for the Barbie movie, but Sony’s last scheduled release date for its version of the film was May 8, 2020. However, with the rights to Barbie reverting back to Mattel earlier this year, it could be a while until we see this version of the Barbie movie.

Female-led heist films are officially a trend. With Ocean’s 8 and Widows coming up later this year, a third heist movie is now in the works from indie filmmaker Miranda July. The project is still untitled, but she’s managed to secure Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) and Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) as two of her lead actors, and the idea of those two co-starring in a movie is almost enough to convince me to see it sight unseen. What’s that? Acclaimed character actor Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water, Bone Tomahawk) is in this, too? Well, then count me in.
Read more about the Miranda July heist movie below.
The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Miranda July, the filmmaker responsible for the 2005 indie darling Me and You and Everyone We Know, is getting behind the camera again to make a heist film for Annapurna Pictures and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.
The untitled film will follow a woman named Old Dolio “whose life is turned upside down when her parents, amateur con artists, invite an outsider to join their biggest heist yet.” Wood is playing Old Dolio (what a character name), Rodriguez will play the outsider, and Jenkins and Debra Winger (Terms of Endearment, The Ranch) will play the con artist parents.
I haven’t seen Me and You and Everyone We Know, which won a Special Jury Prize at Sundance and picked up another trophy at Cannes, but I have seen July’s other film, a 2011 indie called The Future.
I hated it at the time, but looking back on it, the film was wildly imaginative and couldn’t have been made by anyone else. A cat narrates it, the moon talks to a character at one point, and a T-shirt gains sentience and crawls along the street by itself. It’s very bizarre, and if The Future is anything to go by, it signals that July’s new feature won’t be a typical heist movie. Some of the writer/director’s surrealism seems sure to infiltrate this project, and I’m just hoping it doesn’t completely overshadow the story.
The cast is a compelling combination of personalities I wouldn’t expect to see thrown together, and I’m always a sucker for a good heist story, so I find myself actively looking forward to this one even though I wasn’t crazy about July’s latest cinematic effort. Production starts in May, but there’s no release date in place yet.

It’s official: Patty Jenkins is returning to direct Wonder Woman 2.
After prolonged discussions with Warner Bros. over the course of several months after the record-breaking box office success of Wonder Woman, Jenkins has been confirmed to direct the Wonder Woman sequel. And if previous reports are true, this has just made Jenkins the highest-paid female director in Hollywood.
Variety confirmed the news of Jenkins’ return to direct the Wonder Woman sequel on Monday:
Patty Jenkins has closed a deal to direct the sequel to the summer hit Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot has already signed on to return in the title role. The film is slated for release on Dec. 13, 2019.
Wonder Woman was a runaway — or rather, a flyaway — hit at the box office this summer, raking in $ 813 million worldwide and shattering records as the highest-grossing live-action film directed by a female director, the highest-grossing DC Extended Universe movie, the highest-grossing superhero origin movie domestically, and the winner of the summer movie season both critically and commercially.
A sequel was greenlit almost immediately after Wonder Woman surprised Hollywood with its extraordinary reviews and opening weekend, with star Gal Gadot set to return. As news reports came in that Jenkins was working on a Wonder Woman 2 script with DC Films co-head Geoff Johns (teasing a 1980s Cold War-era setting), the only thing that wasn’t confirmed was Jenkins’ participation behind the camera. It set the Interwebs ablaze with speculation: why would Jenkins not return to the film that rocketed the DCEU into the critically beloved superhero movie stratosphere after Warner Bros. struggled to make Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad both critical and commercial hits? And with Wonder Woman‘s pivotal role in Warner Bros.’ new mantra of optimistic and “fun” superhero movies, why wouldn’t Jenkins be at the helm of this new direction?
It turns out that Jenkins was hard at work on making sure she was paid adequately for what she achieved as the director of Wonder Woman. Much fuss was made over Gal Gadot’s base pay in Wonder Woman — though the reports turned out to be on false claims — but not as much notice was given to Jenkins’ pay. Women are critically underserved in Hollywood, both in front and behind the camera, and the wage gap can be seen regularly in Forbes’ annual highest-paid actors and actresses lists. There is a growing awareness that women get fewer chances to direct high-profile films than men, even after they’ve proven themselves in the television field or with a feature film hit.
Directors like Ava DuVernay are working to spotlight and hire more female directors and crew members, and it looks like Jenkins has been fighting the pay inequity fight. It seems to have paid off.
Wonder Woman 2 is set to hit theaters on December 13, 2019.

Wonder Woman has become one of the biggest superhero movies in history, earning $ 410 million in the US and another $ 405 million abroad. Its star, Gal Gadot, inspired major fan meltdowns at Comic-Con. And yet Warner Bros. waited months before figuring out who would direct the sequel. Now they’ve finally cut a deal with Patty Jenkins, who wrote and directed the first film. Jenkins will be getting $ 8 million, a bit of a raise from the $ 1 million she got last time.
This has been a roller coaster ride for Jenkins, who rocketed from the beloved indie director of Monster to one of Hollywood’s most sought-after blockbuster makers. She’s even aroused the ire (or perhaps envy?) of director James Cameron (Terminator, Avatar), who scolded her publicly for creating “an objectified icon” out of the hero from Themyscira. He said Wonder Woman is “just male Hollywood doing the same old thing… it’s a step backwards.” Jenkins seemed a little mystified at being called “male Hollywood.” She replied on Twitter that “there is no right and wrong kind of powerful woman” and that women can judge for themselves what kind icons they prefer.
Obviously Warner Bros. wants Jenkins to keep doing whatever it was that brought in almost a billion dollars. Variety reports that she’s already working on a script with DC film universe head Geoff Johns. Her contract reportedly involved her writing, directing, and producing the sequel, as well as “a substantial backend of box office grosses.” Godot is returning to star, and the movie is slated for release December 13, 2019.
]]>Sources say Jenkins will receive directing and writing fees in the high seven figures (think somewhere in the $ 7 million to $ 9 million range) on Wonder Woman 2 but, more significantly, will have a considerable backend. (At her peak, filmmaker Nancy Meyers earned in the $ 5 million range, according to sources.) The deal is a superheroic leap for Jenkins, who was paid $ 1 million for directing the initial Wonder Woman but was looking to get something more on the level of Zack Snyder’s pay after he helmed Man of Steel, according to sources. Just as Wonder Woman broke barriers for superhero movies, Jenkins’ deal breaks a glass ceiling for women directors.
To put it another way, Jenkins was paid only $ 1 million to direct a film that has raked in $ 800 million since its debut — and it’s still opening in countries around the world. Unacceptable, Hollywood.
Make. That. Bank.
Star Gal Gadot has already been confirmed to return for the sequel, which is slated for a December 13, 2019 release.
