“The Munsters” is one of those old-school ’60s sitcoms that couch potatoes of a certain age watched and rewatched throughout their formative years. We absorbed these shows’ quirks and themes and catchphrases so completely that the merest of references can trigger a flood of childhood memories. They weren’t the acme of broadcast art, but they filled our afternoons with machine-manufactured laughs, and we loved them for it.

So when a studio goes chasing nostalgia bucks by transferring a popular TV show to the big screen, they’re best off playing it safe and emulating the vibe of the original. Barry Sonnenfeld’s “The Addams Family” movies did this to perfection, and were handsomely rewarded at the box office. On the other hand, Blumhouse’s “Fantasy Island” transformed the celebrities-of-the-week formula that made the ABC series a cheesy guilty pleasure into a charmless horror flick, and audiences loathed it.

Rob Zombie’s “The Munsters,” which premieres today on Netflix, appears to be a blend of new and old. Herman (Jeff Daniel Phillips), Lily (Sheri Moon Zombie), and Grandpa aka The Count (Daniel Roebuck) look very much like they did on television over 50 years ago, but instead of portraying them as a settled family unit, Zombie, who flashed his super-fan credentials back in 1998 by recording a song dedicated to Grandpa’s legendary hot rod, has opted to tell an origin story of sorts. For instance, we now know that Herman’s lumbering, reanimated body is powered by the brain of a stand-up comic. How did this impact the actors’ interpretations of these beloved roles?

Herman Munster, Teenager

In an interview with /Film’s B.J. Colangelo, Phillips explained that his Herman is quite unlike Fred Gwynne’s version of the character in that he’s come “right off the slab.” They just created the guy by Dr. Wolfgang,” said Phillips. “So he’s trying to figure it all out. His brain’s trying to get this whole body to move. I use this analogy, it’s like his brain’s used to driving a Ford Fiesta, and now he’s in a GTO, and he’s just trying to make it all work.”

In other words, Phillips’ Herman is a work-in-progress of sorts, not unlike a kid hitting puberty:

“He’s very cocky. He’s almost like a teenager. That’s how I approached it, and wide-eyed. Where Fred Gwynne was like, he had this charm and yeah, he was childlike too, but I was just trying to get somebody who was trying to find their voice. And that’s why his voice would crack and it was a little higher.”

While Phillips admits that he’s not an impressionist, long-time fans can take heart that he learned how to deliver Herman’s trademark laugh. Will he also throw tantrums like Gwynne’s big, bratty lug? We’ll find out soon enough!

A Blue Origin rocket with no crew onboard failed just over a minute after lifting off on Monday. 

The New Shepard rocket that took off from Blue Origin's West Texas facility on Monday was carrying cargo for research that it was going to send to the edge of space.

A livestream of the launch showed the New Shepard bursting into flames around 29,000 feet above ground. The capsule above the booster rocket then detached itself and parachuted back to the ground.

 

Blue Origin said on Twitter there was a "booster failure" on the flight, triggering the escape system. The capsule "successfully separated" from the rocket, the spaceflight company added.

It was the first major incident for billionaire Jeff Bezos' spaceflight company since it opened commercial services to the public in 2021.

The Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, is investigating the incident, which it called a "mishap" in a statement sent to Insider.

"The capsule landed safely and the booster impacted within the designated hazard area. No injuries or public property damage have been reported," said the FAA.

"Before the New Shepard vehicle can return to flight, the FAA will determine whether any system, process, or procedure related to the mishap affected public safety. This is standard practice for all mishap investigations," the FAA added.

When Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos decided to accuse David Pecker, the CEO of National Enquirer’s parent company, of blackmail on Thursday, he chose an interesting way to do it: a post on Medium. 

Medium is a blogging media site founded by Evan Williams, one of the founders of Twitter. Bezos also tweeted about his blog post, to his 834,000 followers, so that’s a double score for technologies created by Williams and used by Bezos in this drama. (Just in case you haven’t been following closely: intimate photos and text messages between Bezos and the woman he was having an affair with were obtained by the Enquirer, which published some of the trove and threatened to publish others).

On Thursday afternoon, Jeff Bezos took to Medium to excoriate David Pecker and his company American Media Inc.—which owns the National Enquirer—for attempting “extortion and blackmail.” Rather than comply with their demands, the Amazon founder and CEO (who also owns The Washington Post) has published emails from AMI executives threatening to publish a number of embarrassing photos of Bezos and a woman the Enquirer claims is his mistress.

The kerfuffle all started several weeks ago, when the National Enquirer published text messages it alleged proved an affair between Bezos—who is married—and another woman, Lauren Sánchez. As a result, Bezos commissioned an investigation into how the paper obtained the text messages, an act which he claims has enraged Pecker. Bezos writes that AMI subsequently contacted his lawyers demanding a halt to the investigation. Should Bezos’ lawyers not comply, the Enquirer would publish 10 purloined selfies of Bezos and Sanchez, one of which described as a “d*ck pick”.

The following day, Bezos writes that he received another email that he also reproduced in full on Medium. The message demands that he and his lead investigator, Gavin de Becker, make public statements to the effect that “they have no knowledge or basis for suggesting that AMI’s coverage was politically motivated or influenced by political forces, and [they make] an agreement that they will cease referring to such a possibility.”

  • The retiring Republican Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona urged members of his political party to challenge the president, days before he is scheduled to retire from Capitol Hill.
  • “Somebody does need to challenge the president,” Flake said in a CNN interview on Friday. “I think that the country needs to be reminded what it means to be conservative, certainly on the Republican side, and what it means to be decent as well, because we need a lot more of that in our politics.”
  • Flake had terse words for Trump, who despite saying he was “proud to shut down the government,” flipped and blamed Democrats for the ongoing partial government shutdown.
  • “Anytime you stand and say ‘I own the shutdown,’ then you own it,” Flake said.

Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, one of the few outspoken Republican critics of President Donald Trump, urged members of his political party to challenge the president, days before he is scheduled to retire from Capitol Hill.

  • A seasonal Amazon worker, who wrote an anonymous column in The Guardian, described the induction talk they were given on their first day.
  • A manager took an image of an inverted pyramid, labelled the bottom “least important” and said that CEO Jeff Bezos thinks he belongs at this end of the diagram.
  • Amazon’s customers and warehouse workers were right at the top of the inverted pyramid.
  • The anonymous staffer went on to savage Amazon’s working conditions, saying that employees in the warehouses are treated as “disposable.”

Amazon workers are told that Jeff Bezos considers himself the least important person at the company.

That’s according to a seasonal worker, who wrote an anonymous column for The Guardian in which they described their introductory talk from a fulfilment center manager.

With Alec Baldwin presumably still indisposed — how do you not riff on the Trump/Jim Acosta press conference kerfuffle? — NBC’s Saturday Night Live this weekend instead opened with ousted/forcibly-resigned Attorney General Jeff Sessions bidding adieu to his friends from the White House.

Discovered by Sarah Huckabee Sanders hiding under his desk (waiting to give Matthew Whitaker “a scare”), Sessions marveled at how unqualified his interim replacement is. “A shady businessman, with no experience, blindly loyal to Donald Trump….” And then he got it.

After turning in his ID card to Sanders, Sessions got to packing his things in the file box he “was born in” — including the Bible he “justified a lot of bad things with” and the Bob Woodward book in which Trump described Sessions as “mentally retarded.”

When Mike Pence stopped by, Sessions questioned his ouster, reminding the VP, “I put kids in cages! I said no to gays! What more did you all want?” Don Jr. and Eric Trump were up next, with the latter asking of the looming Mueller investigation, “Are we going to get some penis?” — meaning subpoenas (unless they do wind up behind bars, that is).

Alas, the boys’ dad (typically played by the recently embattled Alec Baldwin) was nowhere to be seen, leaving Sessions to embrace a framed photo of POTUS and croon Adele’s “Someone Like You.”

Mueller (played again by Robert De Niro) was the last to pay a visit, with Sessions begging for hints about the report he has been putting together. “Am I in it…?” the ex-AG asked, excitedly. “More than you’ll ever know,” Mueller assured.
