Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s new album “Everything is Love” is now available to stream on Spotify Premium and Apple Music, as well as to download on Amazon Music.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z dropped the album unannounced on Saturday, June 18. Initially the album, recorded under the name “The Carters,” was only released on Tidal, Jay-Z’s own digital music platform.

  • Two of the founders of Jay-Z’s fledgling music service Tidal are building a startup focused on mobile location data.
  • The two executives, Thomas Walle and Kjartan Slette, have raised $ 17.5 million to expand Unacast, which supplies data from hundreds of mobile apps to ad targeting companies.
  • The plan is to build out the company’s tech and team of data scientists – and to expand beyond advertising.


Thomas Walle and Kjartan Slette helped launch WiMp, a product that eventually morphed into Tidal – which of course is the music service now shepherded by Jay-Z.

Then in 2016, the two Norwegian entrepreneurs founded Unacast, a tech company that aspires to build something of a warehouse for location data from mobile phones, and then license that data to other companies including ad firms.

We recently wrote about Never Let Me Go director Mark Romanek’s foray back into the world of music videos with his video for Justin Timberlake’s new single “Filthy,” but he’s not alone: Selma and A Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVernay has a new music video of her own, featuring none other than Jay-Z and Beyonce.

As you might expect from the heavyweight talent involved, “Family Feud” (from Jay-Z’s recent 4:44 album) isn’t just any old music video. It’s a nearly eight-minute short film that spans hundreds of years and features performances from actors like Michael B. Jordan, Thandie Newton, Trevante Rhodes, Brie Larson, Rashida Jones, Constance Wu, and many more. Oh yeah, and Jay and Bey sing a song together at some point, too.

Family Feud music video

The “Family Feud” video originally debuted on Jay-Z’s subscription streaming service Tidal, but now that it’s made its way to YouTube, we’re all able to watch it for free.

Beyonce and Jay-Z experts will have far more relevant takes than me (check out Jen Yamato’s piece in The L.A. Times for a deeper dive), but from a filmmaking perspective, this is a bold and unique piece of work. There’s so much to dig into, from the opening text from author James Baldwin to Thandie Newton’s murderous Cleopatra-esque feminist badass in the year 2444, the political undertones of Jessica Chastain’s confrontation with the nation’s Co-Presidents (!), a band of yellow-hazed warriors, and a group of diverse women rewriting the Constitution.

And then there’s the music itself, Jay-Z’s response to Beyonce’s Lemonade that openly addresses his indiscretions and shortcomings and serves as a literal confession, since it takes place in a church confessional with Beyonce decked out in priest garb. Like I said: there’s a lot to unpack here. I’m sure those who closely follow the drama surrounding this family will have enough to analyze here for at least the next few weeks, while the rest of us can gawk at DuVernay’s gorgeous imagery and ponder the notion of a nation that has two presidents serving together at the same time.

But now, whatever streaming service you might for some reason be loyal to, you’ll be happy to know that you can now listen to Jay-Z’s 4:44 on it — unless it’s Spotify, that is. It’s there on Apple Music/iTunes, it’s there on Google Play Music, and it’s there on Amazon Music, but you won’t find it on Spotify, which Thom Yorke once described as “the last desperate fart of a dying corpse,” (it’s a very long, resilient, all-encompassing fart, it seems) and which had long been a least-favorite among many artists for its simultaneous ad-based free service and premium service. (A problem that it seems like Spotify has worked with Universal to amend.)

Spotify also happens to still be the widest-used streaming service, with about 140 million users (as opposed to Tidal’s estimated 1 million) — all of whom don’t have access to JAY-Z’s catalogue, as he removed it from Spotify back in April. You can see where the rapper/entrepreneur’s strategy might be herein, from a business perspective. And business, indeed, was a huge part of the way the album was rolled out: the exclusive itself even more exclusive than it sounds — as it was only for people who’d purchased Tidal prior to July 26. If you’d subscribed afterwards, you also had to sign up for a Sprint promotion to stream the album last week. However, as 4:44 has been unveiled for non-Tidal users, it’s now available to all Tidal users as well.

According to Pitchfork, a physical album is incoming  – and will include the song “Adnis,” which you may have noted was absent from the digital release, despite having been in a trailer for the album.

Just a week after Jay-Z released 4:44 as an exclusive tied to Sprint and his music service Tidal, it’s now available more widely. iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play Music and Amazon Music are all offering the album for listening now, with some including The Story of O.J. animated video. It has not appeared for listening on Spotify yet, but since most of his catalog is still missing from the service it’s not entirely surprising.. The album has already been certified platinum by the RIAA, but for many, this their first opportunity to have a legit listen.

As per Pitchfork, the rapper explains: “I woke up, literally, at 4:44 in the morning, 4:44am, to write the song. So it became the title of the album, and everything.”

The explanation came as part of a carefully prepared iHeartRadio exclusive wherein Jay-Z does a track-by-track breakdown of the new album, explaining the meaning behind the songs and the events that inspired them. You will be delighted to learn that the title of opening track “Kill Jay-Z” is “not meant to be taken seriously” — it is in fact “about the ego… killing off the ego so that we can have this conversation in a place of honesty and vulnerability.”

Ego is a concept to which he returns in several of the songs: “Bam” is “secretly Shawn Carter saying, “Man, you need a bit of ego,’” and “Caught the Eye” — which samples Nina Simone’s wonderful version of “Baltimore” — deals with the way you exist both inside your own head and also in the context of your surroundings. This is not surprising, perhaps, given that he also spends a fair bit of time being contrite about cheating on his wife. The Carter-Knowles’ domestic woes continue to play out in public; this time around, it’s Jay-Z’s turn to address the infamous incident where Solange Knowles booted the shit out of him in an elevator.

He is unambiguously apologetic and, again, he dispenses with any lyrical artifice, speaking directly to himself on the aforementioned “Kill Jay-Z”: “You egged Solange on, knowing all along all you had to say you was wrong/ You almost went Eric Benet, let the baddest girl in the world get away … I don’t even know what you woulda done, in the future, other niggas playing football with your son.” Amusingly, he also implores: “Becky, let me alone!” Yep, it’s a bad business being chased by Becky.

At worst, this reads like Dear Diary stuff, so perhaps it’s no surprise that the best lyric of the album comes on “Moonlight,” which alludes to the weird Oscars mix-up whereby the Best Picture Award was accidentally first given to La La Land instead of the actual winner, Moonlight. The lyric uses this as a metaphor — a good one! — for the ongoing suppression of black culture and black Americans in general: “We stuck in La La Land/ Even if we win, we gonna lose.”

JAY-Z’s mother, Gloria Carter, came out as lesbian in an appearance on the song “Smile” from her son’s new album, “4:44.” 

On the song, Jay and his mother both candidly address her sexuality for the first time in public, according to The Huffington Post. 

“Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian / Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian,” Jay-Z raps on the track, which samples Stevie Wonder’s 1976 song “Love’s In Need of Love Today.”

“Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate / Society shame and the pain was too much to take,” he continues. “Cried tears of joy when you fell in love / Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her.”

Gloria Carter herself appears on a spoken-word outro to the song.

“Living in the shadow / Can you imagine what kind of life it is to live?” Carter asks. 

“The world is changing and they say it’s time to be free / But you live with the fear of just being me,” she continues. “Living in the shadow feels like the safe place to be / No harm for them, no harm for me / But life is short, and it’s time to be free / Love who you love, because life isn’t guaranteed.”

Jay has previously spoken out in support of the LGBTQ community, including in a 2012 CNN interview.

“I’ve always thought [not allowing same-sex marriages] was still holding the country back,” Jay-Z told CNN. “What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. [It] is no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination plain and simple.”
