What is a dashboard?

The first thing that may come to your mind will be what you usually see in your vehicle just above the steering. However, that isn’t the type of dashboard being referred to here. We are referring to dashboards used by different kinds of businesses and industries for data visualization.

Dashboards display metrics which are very important in helping us understand particular areas of interest. A good dashboard has the ability to give you an understanding of events at a glance. A dashboard is characterized as a timesaver based on the fact that it displays vital information efficiently.

Dashboards should not be mistaken for reports

Most people mistake dashboards for reports, and this is a very big misconception. They see a dashboard as a report because it is displaying the info being reported on. A report is a one-time thing, can be long, and can require a lot of time to put together.

Dashboards, however, are tools for connecting to info. Unlike reports, dashboards change as the information changes in real-time. Dashboards can be used to dive into reports and extract vital information in details.

Dashboards are created for the representation of data as well as causal relationships which are already known in order to enhance monitoring seamlessly with little or no effort. A dashboard is usually displayed on a purpose-built screen and basically contains just essential data which is needed for the achievement of organizational goals as well as providing solutions to problems faced by the intended user. Dashboards are built to give you the ability to quickly monitor critical information in just a single glance. It offers sufficient contextual and analytical detail and gives you a quick way of extracting the relevant details.

This means that dashboard effectiveness relies on the quality of its design and how that design connects with the intended audience. You will find dashboards being more interactive today. However, its effectiveness is mostly determined by the level of time and work needed to get insights.

Dashboard visuals by chart types

Different kinds of visuals can be used on dashboards. The truth is that your dashboard can contain anything you want it to. The dashboard might even come with a video. Check out these two usual suspects that may be seen on typical dashboards:

Gauges

Gauges are one of the visuals used when it comes to data visualization and dashboards. When you think of a dashboard, this is one of the first visuals that come into your mind. Gauges are basically utilized to display actual vs. Performance targets.

Sparklines

In contrast with gauges, sparklines happen to be mostly preferred by data visualization professionals. Sparklines are basically small line charts and are used in displaying trends over time. Sparklines have certain features which make them highly desired by the experts. One of the reasons is that they are very good at saving space. Another reason is that they can be used to tell a story which gives the viewer a context that is very useful. They are data-intense, small sized graphics that come in a simple design. If you are looking to show data over a period of time, a sparkline can be a perfect visual. You might wonder why sparklines come in handy for designing dashboards.

The reason is that this visualization element has the ability to save both space and time. A lot of data can be packed into such small space with the addition of vital contextual info. They, therefore, provide a quick understanding of events at just a simple glance. This makes it easier to identify issues to be addressed as well as actions to be implemented.

Dashboard Technical Implementation (looking under the covers)

Just how does a great dashboard design idea get realized in your web application? That is where a program or data visualization expert comes in to take your functional requirements and needs and translate them using a charting library or dashboard framework. They will be sure to consider a responsive design so your dashboard looks as good on mobile devices and phones as it does on desktops, laptops, and tablets. They can select javascript chart tools using SVG or scalable vector graphics with HTML5 to ensure the charts on your dashboards are crisp and clear even when zooming or printing. Data will be loaded from your databases and other sources and passes to your dashboard page through JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) which is a lightweight data-interchange format.

Conclusion

Whatever the technical tools used, the end result must be a dashboard that works for you and your customers that will help convey key metrics about your business quickly and efficiently. With an efficient modular design, you will be able to update and customize your dashboard as your business and needs grow so it can be an asset for years to come.

Chrome 61 arrives with JavaScript modules and WebUSB support https://briefnews.eu/chrome-61-arrives-with-javascript-modules-and-webusb-support/ https://briefnews.eu/chrome-61-arrives-with-javascript-modules-and-webusb-support/#respond Wed, 06 Sep 2017 03:10:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chrome-61-arrives-with-javascript-modules-and-webusb-support/

Google has launched Chrome 61 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Additions in this release include JavaScript modules and WebUSB support, among other developer features. You can update to the latest version now using the browser’s built-in silent updater or download it directly from google.com/chrome.

Chrome is arguably more than a browser. With over 1 billion users, it’s a major platform that web developers have to consider. In fact, with Chrome’s regular additions and changes, developers have to keep up to ensure they are taking advantage of everything available.

Chrome now supports JavaScript modules natively via the new <script type=module> element, letting developers declare a script’s dependencies. Modules are already popular in third-party build tools, which use them to bundle only the required scripts. Native support means the browser can fetch granular dependencies in parallel, taking advantage of caching, avoiding duplications across the page, and ensuring the script executes in the correct order, all without a build step. Google recommends these two blog posts for more information: ECMAScript modules in browsers and ES6 Modules in Depth.

Speaking of JavaScript, Chrome 61 also upgrades the browser’s V8 JavaScript engine to version 6.1. Developers can expect performance improvements and a binary size reduction.

The WebUSB API meanwhile allows web apps to access user-permitted USB devices. This enables all the functionality provided by hardware peripherals such as keyboards, mice, printers, and gamepads, while still preserving the security guarantees of the web.

Other developer features in this release include:

  • The Network Information API is now available on desktop as well as Android, enabling sites to access the underlying connection information of a device.
  • Developers can now specify scrolling smoothness via a new optional parameter in existing Scroll APIs or with the scroll-behavior CSS property.
  • The CSSOM View Smooth Scroll API brings native smooth scrolling to the platform through a the scroll-behavior: smooth CSS property or by using the window.scrollTo() DOM scroll method, eliminating the need to implement this behavior with JavaScript
  • CSS color values can now be 8- and 4-digit hex colors of the format #RRGGBBAA and #RGBA.
  • Sites can now access the relative positions of the screen content with the Visual Viewport API, exposing complex functionality like pinch-and-zoom in a more direct way.
  • The Device RAM API is now available, exposing the amount of RAM on a user’s device to sites to optimize overall performance of a web application.
  • When navigating from an installed web app to a site outside the initial web app’s scope, the new site now automatically loads in a Custom Chrome Tab.
  • For video using native controls, Chrome will now automatically expand video to fullscreen when a user rotates their device in an orientation that matches a video playing on the screen.
  • nextHopProtocol is now available in Resource Timing and Navigation Timing, providing access to the network protocol used to fetch a resource.
  • Sites can now require embedded third-party content to enforce a given Content Security Policy via the new csp attribute on <iframe> elements.
  • The DOMTokenList interface now supports replace() to easily change all identical tokens to a new one, such as active to inactive on expiration.
  • To access a list of attribute names of an element, getAttributeNames() is now supported and gives developers a more direct mechanism than going through the attributes collection.
  • To increase security, sites will now automatically exit full screen if a JavaScript dialog opens.
  • Sites can now access an estimate for the disk space used by a given origin and quota in bytes via the Storage API’s new navigator.storage.estimate() function.
  • To improve the browser’s cache hit rate, URLSearchParams now supports sort() to list all stored name-value pairs.
  • The URLSearchParams constructor has been updated to accept any object as a parameter instead of only other URLSearchParams instances.
  • To prevent the use of mis-issued certificates from going unnoticed, sites can use the new Expect-CT HTTP header which will enable automated reporting and/or enforcement of Certificate Transparency requirements.
  • Chrome will no longer decode frames for videos using Media Source in background tabs.
  • “Non-Live” camera settings such as photo resolution, red eye reduction, and flash mode can now be retrieved with ImageCapture.getPhotoSettings().
  • Sites can now use the Clear-Site-Data header to delete their own client-side data, such as cookies, service workers, storage, and cache entries.

For what’s new in the browser’s DevTools, check out the release notes.

Chrome 61 also implements 22 security fixes. The following ones were found by external researchers:

  • [$ 5000][737023]High CVE-2017-5111: Use after free in PDFium. Reported by Luật Nguyễn (@l4wio) of KeenLab, Tencent on 2017-06-27

  • [762099] Various fixes from internal audits, fuzzing and other initiatives

Google thus spent at least $ 23,500 in bug bounties for this release. As always, the security fixes alone should be enough incentive for you to upgrade.

Speaking of security, this release also removes trust in WoSign and StartCom certificates. Back in Octobeer 2016, Google unveiled its plan for the process, starting with only trusting certificates issued prior to October 21 2016 in Chrome 56, restricting trust to a set of whitelisted hostnames based on the Alexa Top 1 milion, and then reducing the size of the whitelist over the course of several Chrome releases. In Chrome 61, the whitelist has been removed, resulting in full distrust of the existing WoSign and StartCom root certificates and all certificates they have issued.

Google releases a new version of its browser every six weeks or so. Chrome 62 will arrive by mid October.

Facebook turned a JavaScript framework into a VR creation tool https://briefnews.eu/facebook-turned-a-javascript-framework-into-a-vr-creation-tool/ https://briefnews.eu/facebook-turned-a-javascript-framework-into-a-vr-creation-tool/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2017 21:47:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/facebook-turned-a-javascript-framework-into-a-vr-creation-tool/

Facebook launched React VR today, an open source JavaScript framework for building VR experiences that was announced back in October. It’s based on React, which is the user interface code that powers websites like Facebook and Instagram. React VR lets you import 360 panoramic images and 3D models into a scene, add text and images, and implement interactivity with the same style of code you’d normally use to make a website.

Under the hood is WebVR, a burgeoning standard that was originally spearheaded by Mozilla and now has some amount of support on almost every platform but the Mac. Scenes can also render in 2D on non-WebVR browsers.

React VR probably appeals to a very particular kind of developer: someone who’s comfortable with JavaScript and web development, and wants to build something in VR, but isn’t interested in learning the complexities of 3D game development.

A glut of tools are now available to developers to build VR. Unreal Engine and Unity are both “free” (at least, there’s no up-front cost), relatively easy to learn, and incredibly powerful. You can also get a copy of CryEngine or Amazon’s Lumberyard without paying a penny.

On the other end of the spectrum, companies like Mozilla and Facebook are working to serve people who prefer HTML and JavaScript to C++ and C#. Mozilla’s A-Frame HTML-based framework has been kicking around for a while, and even supports motion controllers.

I have no idea how far the build-a-VR-experience-like-it’s-a-website concept can scale — I’d assume that most games and high-end experiences will continue to be built in Unreal and Unity. But React VR and A-Frame lower the barrier to entry so far that it seems foolish to underestimate them.

Google deprecates Octane JavaScript benchmark, because everyone is basically cheating https://briefnews.eu/google-deprecates-octane-javascript-benchmark-because-everyone-is-basically-cheating/ https://briefnews.eu/google-deprecates-octane-javascript-benchmark-because-everyone-is-basically-cheating/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2017 10:21:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-deprecates-octane-javascript-benchmark-because-everyone-is-basically-cheating/

Google has announced that its widely used Octane JavaScript benchmark is being retired, with Google saying that it’s no longer a useful way for browser developers to determine how best to optimize their JavaScript engines.

Octane was developed for and by the developers of V8, the JavaScript engine used in Chrome. It was intended to address flaws in the earlier SunSpider benchmark, developed by Apple’s Safari team. SunSpider’s tests were all microbenchmarks, sometimes testing something as small as a single operation performed thousands of times. It wasn’t very representative of real-world code, and it was arguably being gamed, with browser vendors introducing optimizations that were aimed primarily, albeit not exclusively, at boosting SunSpider scores. This was being done even when those optimizations were detrimental to real-world performance, because having a good score carried so much prestige.

Octane was introduced in 2012 and includes cut-down versions of somewhat realistic workloads, such as compiling the TypeScript compiler. But since then, JavaScript coding styles have changed. JavaScript itself has changed; ECMAScript 2015 (the standardized version of JavaScript) introduced a range of new features that weren’t available in 2012, and hence aren’t tested by Octane, and all manner of new libraries and frameworks have emerged since.

New ASLR-busting JavaScript is about to make drive-by exploits much nastier https://briefnews.eu/new-aslr-busting-javascript-is-about-to-make-drive-by-exploits-much-nastier/ https://briefnews.eu/new-aslr-busting-javascript-is-about-to-make-drive-by-exploits-much-nastier/#respond Wed, 15 Feb 2017 08:45:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-aslr-busting-javascript-is-about-to-make-drive-by-exploits-much-nastier/

(credit: xxdigipxx)

For a decade, every major operating system has relied on a technique known as address space layout randomization to provide a first line of defense against malware attacks. By randomizing the computer memory locations where application code and data are loaded, ASLR makes it hard for attackers to execute malicious payloads when exploiting buffer overflows and similar vulnerabilities. As a result, exploits cause a simple crash rather than a potentially catastrophic system compromise.

Now, researchers have devised an attack that could spell the end of ASLR as the world knows it now. The attack uses simple JavaScript code to identify the memory addresses where system and application components are loaded. When combined with attack code that exploits vulnerabilities in browsers or operating systems, the JavaScript can reliably eliminate virtually all of the protection ASLR provides. The technique, which exploits what’s known as a side channel in the memory cache of all widely used modern CPUs, is described in a research paper published on Wednesday. The researchers have dubbed the technique ASLR Cache or AnC for short.

“Fundamentally insecure”

The researchers said the side channel attack is much more damaging than previous ASLR bypasses, because it exploits a micro-architectural property of the CPU’s that’s independent of any operating system or application running on it. Whereas heap spraying and other forms of ASLR bypass can often be mitigated by software tweaks, there isn’t much that can stop or lessen the effects of the JavaScript, which targets a CPU’s MMU, or memory management unit. That’s because CPU caching behavior and strong address space randomization are mutually exclusive. (Apple, however, recently hardened its Safari browser to partially mitigate such attacks. It’s also possible to prevent JavaScript from running in a browser, but such blocking often severely degrades a site’s usability.)
