In the 1980s, fishermen working off the coast of Indonesia made a surprising haul: a cargo of ceramic vessels, elephant tusks, sweet-smelling resin, and other artifacts from a ship that had lain on the bottom of the Java Sea for centuries. Most of the ship’s hull was long since gone; wood decays quickly in warm waters, leaving behind only its former contents.

Now, a closer look at its cargo reveals that the ship may have gone to the bottom a century earlier than archaeologists first suspected, which puts it in the middle of a very interesting period in Chinese history.

A massive earthquake has hit the Indonesian island of Java, with workers forced to flee capital Jakarta.

Residents have been urged to evacuate their homes due to aftershock fears.

Local TV showed patients being evacuated from a hospital in the capital.

The quake struck around 65 miles west of the city of Sukabumi on the island of Java, at a depth of 21 miles.

So is it safe to travel to Indonesia? The FCO have not advised against travel to the region.

Offering advice on what to do in the event of an earthquake, they wrote: “If a major earthquake or landslide occurs close to shore, you should follow the instructions of local authorities, bearing in mind that a tsunami could arrive within minutes.

“The Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning Centre issues tsunami warnings when a potential tsunami with significant impact is imminent or expected.”

No tsunami warnings were issued after the latest earthquake.

The tremor appears to have been felt across the densely-populated island of Java, which is home to more than 50 million people.

The Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning Centre advised: “Based on historical data and tsunami modelling, this earthquake may be capable of generating a tsunami affecting the Indian Ocean region.

“IOTWMS-TSP INDONESIA will monitor the situation to determine if a tsunami was generated and will issue further bulletins as information becomes available.”

They then updated advice and conluded: “Based on pre-run model scenarios, there is NO THREAT to countries in the Indian Ocean. No further bulletins will be issued unless the situation changes.”

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics agency chief Dwikorita Karnawati told Metro TV: “The epicentre is in an area prone to quakes. More aftershocks are very likely.

“I’m calling on people to be prepared, especially if you are in buildings with a weak structure.”

Indonesia is regularly rocked by earthquakes – the country is located on the Ring of Fire, a huge area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions frequently occur.

Java was struck by a 6.5-magnitude earthquake only last month which left four people dead and 36 injured.

Amazon Web Services has added another computer science heavyweight to its employee roster. James Gosling, often referred to as the “Father of Java,” announced on Facebook Monday that he would be joining the cloud provider as a distinguished engineer.

Gosling came up with the original design of Java and implemented its first compiler and virtual machine as part of his work at Sun Microsystems. He left Sun in 2010 after the company was acquired by Oracle, spent a short time at Google and most recently worked at Liquid Robotics designing software for an underwater robot.

Amazon confirmed that Gosling had joined the company, but didn’t offer any further comment on the work he would be doing there. Gosling will join other tech luminaries including Adrian Cockroft, Swami Sivasubramanian and Werner Vogels.

While it’s unclear exactly what he’ll be working on, Gosling seems like a natural fit for the teams creating AWS’s tools for the Internet of Things. He’s intimately familiar with the process of deploying IoT systems, as well as the challenges that arise when it comes to using the public cloud with IoT.

“In my case, there are no cloud providers [Liquid Robotics] can use, so we end up rolling our own for everything, which is a real pain,” Gosling said at IP Expo Europe in 2016, when discussing IoT systems. “I mean, a lot of the cloud providers would make my life hugely easier, but convincing [a] random Coast Guard from some random country that they should trust Amazon is really, really hard.”

Void of any advanced electronic tech, the Simpresso is comprised solely of a water chamber, an attachable espresso cup, and a lid with a built-in, hand-operated crank which generates pressure to craft the espresso. When using the crank, the device generates pressure from 15 to 19 bars (roughly 217 to 275 PSI) which allow it to continuously produce high-quality espresso. Sized at 8-inches tall and 2.5-inches wide, the Simpresso is no bigger than a traditional portable coffee mug or Thermos.

“Simpresso is a new portable espresso machine concept, which produces high-quality espresso anywhere, anytime,” said Simposh, the device’s creators, on its Kickstarter page. “Simposh has spent years researching and developing the portable espresso maker with more than 10 designs and a lot of effort on improving the product after each testing mock-up.  Ultimately, we produced the final product shown here as the innovative Simpresso Portable Espresso Maker.”

To craft a batch of ported espresso, owners need to simply fill the Simpresso with hot water, pack the reusable capsule with ground coffee of their choice, and then attach the capsule to the bottom of the device. When they are ready to whip up a cup of java, a few cranks of the Simpresso’s handle pumps out a batch into its cup. If all was prepared correctly — and the machine works, of course — then the finished product is none other than a piping hot serving of espresso.

For early backers, Simposh offers its Simpresso device for just $ 42 — though there were only three of these left at the time of writing. After the early backer deal runs out, interested buyers have the option of purchasing a Simpresso for $ 48, or two for $ 84. With eight days left in the campaign, Simposh has amassed just shy of $ 22,000 in funding.
