Japan’s Hayabusa2 spacecraft has successfully touched down on the surface of asteroid Ryugu to accomplish one of its ultimate goals: collect samples for scientists back on Earth. The probe has briefly landed on the asteroid to fire a bullet into its surface and kick up dust, rocks and any other debris that it can collect. Hayabusa2 has been hovering around Ryugu since mid-2018 and even dropped two landers on the floating rock to study its surface and take photos.

It started its descent on February 21st, 6AM Japan time, taking photos of what it saw as it approached the asteroid. This photo was one of the last it captured before it fired the bullet:

Since it lost contact with its ground team when it touched down, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency had to wait for it take flight again and restore communications. It only took the spacecraft a second to fire that bullet and take off again, though, so we’re now just waiting to hear if it has successfully collected samples.

This operation was supposed to happen back in October, but the ground team discovered from Ryugu’s surface has much bigger gravel than they thought. They had to perform experiments in the lab before they give the operation a go. Now that this attempt proved successful, they’re expected to fire an explosive into the asteroid later this year to create a crater and collect additional fragments.

Hayabusa2 is scheduled to leave Ryugu in December 2019 and to be back home a year later. The samples it brings back could shed light on what the early solar system was like and could give us more information on the possibility that asteroids seeded Earth with organic matter that led to life on our planet.

A potted history of Japan’s car industry delights at the Petersen Museum https://briefnews.eu/a-potted-history-of-japans-car-industry-delights-at-the-petersen-museum/ https://briefnews.eu/a-potted-history-of-japans-car-industry-delights-at-the-petersen-museum/#respond Sun, 10 Feb 2019 06:52:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-potted-history-of-japans-car-industry-delights-at-the-petersen-museum/

LOS ANGELES—Like most nerds, I love spending time in a good museum. It doesn’t matter if it’s planes, video games, cars—even creationists. (OK, that last one wasn’t good, per se.)

When it comes to good car museums, the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is one of my favorites—right up there with the wonderful Lane Motor Museum in Nashville. Both have quite different foci. At the Lane you’ll see more rear-engined Tatra sedans than you’d ever think possible outside of the Czech Republic or Slovakia, not to mention dozens and dozens of voiturettes and Kei cars. (Oh, and some Group B rally stuff.) Meanwhile, the Petersen often plays host to equally rarified but often much more expensive fare. At a conference I attended there last year, it was often hard to concentrate on the panelists and not the pristine Ferrari 250GTO that just sat there, a few feet away…

A recent trip to LA afforded some downtime, and how better to use it than a quick visit to this palace of vehicular delights? I caught the tail end of an exhibit called “The Roots of Monozukuri: Creative Spirit in Japanese Automaking,” which opened last summer and runs until February 10. (Monozukuri is translated as “the art, science, and craft of making things.”)

Japan’s Nikkei crashes 5% as US markets see worst December since Great Depression https://briefnews.eu/japans-nikkei-crashes-5-as-us-markets-see-worst-december-since-great-depression/ https://briefnews.eu/japans-nikkei-crashes-5-as-us-markets-see-worst-december-since-great-depression/#respond Tue, 25 Dec 2018 05:41:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/japans-nikkei-crashes-5-as-us-markets-see-worst-december-since-great-depression/

Japan’s Nikkei 225 and Topix indices have both tumbled by roughly 5% to a 20-month low after US markets suffered their worst Christmas Eve crash on record.

On the heels of the US markets crash, Nikkei 225, which has been slowly sliding downward over the past weeks, dropped sharply to 19,144 on open Tuesday, down 20% from its October 2 peak. Meanwhile, the Tokyo Stock Price Index, also known as Topix, plunged roughly 5 more percent to 1,414, having hit its peak in January.

The Asian stock downfall followed the Wall Street sell-off on Monday. Experts believe that the US stock plunge before Christmas was caused by investors’ growing concerns about the interest-rate increase by the Federal Reserve, the slowing of the global economy, and the US-China trade dispute. President Donald Trump’s attack on the Federal Reserve also scared the stock market on Christmas Eve. “The only problem our economy has is the Fed,” the president tweeted on Monday, forcing the stocks to react.

“Ever since Trump started his trade protection, the trade war stuff, the markets have not liked it. He should get a clue, reverse these crazy tariffs, and start making peace with the world,” if he wants to see the markets recover, Jeffrey Albert Tucker, executive editor of Laissez Faire Books, told RT.

THE BIG hair, shoulder pads, splashy videos and tinny recordings were hard to escape at the time. But where are the pop stars of the 1980s now? At an arena near you, most probably. Though the waists are thicker and the hair is thinner, the singers and their songs are recognisably the same. In their own minds, they are still big stars. It was the music business that got small.

No sub-genre of pop is so lamentable that it cannot be resold to the nostalgic. Might such marketing magic also be applied to Japan’s stockmarket? In the 1980s asset prices in Japan reached a level of excess that made the cocaine-addled pop stars of the era seem like choirboys. By 1990 the Nikkei index of stocks was trading at 60 times company earnings. Then came the fall. But after a long time in rehab, Japanese stocks are creeping back into the spotlight.

Like other mooted revivals, this one attracts plenty of scorn….

Japan’s Hayabusa 2 mission lands on target asteroid https://briefnews.eu/japans-hayabusa-2-mission-lands-on-target-asteroid/ https://briefnews.eu/japans-hayabusa-2-mission-lands-on-target-asteroid/#respond Sun, 23 Sep 2018 12:04:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/japans-hayabusa-2-mission-lands-on-target-asteroid/

After months of hovering around its target, Japan’s Hayabusa 2 mission has made contact. Two of the host spacecraft’s landers (ROVER-1A and 1B) have touched down on the surface of the asteroid 162173 Ryugu and have already been hopping around as they take photos (like the one above) and gauge the space rock’s temperature. As far as the mission has come, though, it’s really just the start.

Hayabusa 2 is also poised to launch ROVER-2, which adds optical and ultraviolet LEDs to spot floating dust particles. MASCOT (Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout), meanwhile, will tumble rather than fly but can use its camera, infrared spectrometer, magnetometer and radiometer to study the smaller structural details of the asteroid’s looser surface material. The main Hayabusa 2 vessel should near the surface in October, when it will shoot a tantalum ‘bullet’ into the asteroid so that it can catch particle samples and return them to Earth.

You’ll be waiting a while for the samples to return. Hayabusa 2 doesn’t leave until December 2019, and isn’t expected to return home until December 2020. The payoff promises to be huge, though. Scientists will not only collect more samples than during the first Hayabusa mission, they’ll have lander data that wasn’t available after the first Hayabusa’s Minerva robot failed.

Japan’s largest warship trains with US naval strike group in contested South China Sea https://briefnews.eu/japans-largest-warship-trains-with-us-naval-strike-group-in-contested-south-china-sea/ https://briefnews.eu/japans-largest-warship-trains-with-us-naval-strike-group-in-contested-south-china-sea/#respond Sat, 01 Sep 2018 22:00:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/japans-largest-warship-trains-with-us-naval-strike-group-in-contested-south-china-sea/ Japan’s newest helicopter carrier, Kaga, has trained with the USS Ronald Reagan Strike Group, showcasing its military might during a tour in the contested South China Sea, amid tensions between Beijing and US-backed Tokyo.

The two navies practiced sailing in formation and joint maneuvering on Friday. The ships also trained in replenishment-at-sea procedures. The drill demonstrated how “seamlessly” the allied fleets can operate, explained US Rear Admiral Karl Thomas.

Thomas, who leads the Japan-based Task Force 70, stressed that the joint exercise helped to “further the interoperability” that the allies “have been building for years.”

The Japanese flotilla was led by the nation’s newest and largest warship Kaga, which joined the navy last spring. The 27,000-ton vessel, capable of carrying up to 14 large helicopters, docked in Alava Wharf in Subic Bay, Philippines, on Saturday, along with two destroyers.

The Philippines is the first stop on the Japanese flotilla’s two-month tour in the strategic Indo-Pacific region. The ships are scheduled to visit ports in Indonesia, Singapore, India, and Sri Lanka. The flotilla’s deployment is intended to enhance cooperation with partnering navies, while “contributing to peace and stability” in the region, its commander Rear Admiral Tatsuya Fukuda said, as cited by Philippine media.

In recent years, the South China Sea had seen increased tensions between the Chinese and US navies, with both nations accusing each other of military build-up near the disputed Spratly and Paracel Islands. Earlier this year, Washington ‘disinvited’ China from the joint maritime exercise and sent bombers to fly over the Spratlys, while Beijing redeployed missile systems on the China-controlled Paracel Islands.

Are Japan’s Part-Time Employees Working Themselves to Death? https://briefnews.eu/are-japans-part-time-employees-working-themselves-to-death/ https://briefnews.eu/are-japans-part-time-employees-working-themselves-to-death/#respond Wed, 08 Aug 2018 12:18:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/are-japans-part-time-employees-working-themselves-to-death/ On a sunny morning in June, a middle-aged lawyer named Yoshimasa Obayashi heard his telephone ring once, and nearly ring again, before he rushed to snatch the phone’s receiver from its cradle. It was an unexpected call, from an unknown caller, who confessed that he feared he was working himself to death. In Japan, this sentiment can be expressed using a single word: Karōshi, or “death from overwork,” refers to fatalities from heart attacks, suicides, and other health issues resulting from the stress and fatigue of long hours spent on the job.

In 1988, at the height of Japan’s economic “bubble years,” a group of doctors and labor lawyers launched Japan’s first telephone hotlines dedicated to curbing karōshi. They published their office telephone numbers in pamphlets, and later online, as a means of offering free consultations to at-risk workers, who typically called the volunteer doctors, and bereaved family members, who usually reached out to lawyers like Obayashi for help with compensation claims.

During the summer of 2000, corporate bankruptcies drove hundreds of run-down salarymen to call the hotline each day. By that time, Japan’s government acknowledged just 100 to 200 karōshi cases each year, though Hiroshi Kawahito, a lawyer at the National Defense Counsel for Victims of Karōshi, told me he doesn’t believe that number. He says that given the level of secrecy on the part of employers and what he considers to have been an overly narrow government definition of karōshi at the time—which, for example, didn’t count someone as having worked to death unless they logged more than 100 hours of overtime in the month before dying—the actual number of victims might have been as high as 10,000 cases annually. (The government now uses a lower threshold of hours.)

Press reports about the karōshi epidemic helped push millions of young workers—many of them college graduates who had been offered jobs with major companies—to opt out of Japan’s deadly corporate culture, instead choosing freelance or part-time careers that allowed for a more relaxed lifestyle. It seemed like a prophylactic, of sorts, against karōshi, and indeed, until around 2008, Japan’s karōshi hotlines were used almost exclusively by full-time, salaried workers. (It was considered a shocking outlier, for example, when a young restaurant worker killed herself that year after working more than 140 hours of overtime in a single month.)

These days, though, Obayashi feels that part-time workers are increasingly at risk of karōshi. In recent years, firms have been eschewing full-time workers in favor of more flexible arrangements with recruits who work for lower wages, with less job security, which leaves them vulnerable to abuses like unpaid overtime and has forced many to take extra jobs. Since 2015, Japan’s number of workers with two or more jobs has grown by roughly 30 percent. “Today’s generation of part-time workers can’t afford to be so carefree,” Obayashi told me.

The Japanese government, which now considers people to be at risk of karōshi if they regularly work 60 hours a week or more, does not publish statistics on the working hours of part-timers with multiple jobs. In July, hoping for a clearer picture, I visited Asami Ito, a community manager at Lancers, which builds software platforms that match freelance workers with companies. According to Lancers research, some 4.5 million full-time workers in Japan have second jobs, where they work, on average, between six and 14 additional hours each week, on top of any overtime hours they clock at their primary job; a small number of them work up to 30 or 40 hours per week at their second jobs. “We’re recruiting many more ‘parallel workers,’” Ito told me, using a Lancers nickname for people with side jobs on top of full-time jobs. Ito said Lancers’s research suggests most of Japan’s workforce will be freelancers by 2027.

The fact that people are working multiple part-time jobs just to earn a living wage is surprising, given that Japan’s low birth rates have left the labor market as tight as it has been in forty years, with almost 1.6 jobs for every applicant. In the food-service industry, workers are in such short supply that McDonald’s recently resorted to an expensive advertising campaign aimed at recruiting housewives and retirees to help out with its busiest shifts. Convenience-store chains have hired more foreign workers, while small and mid-sized manufacturing companies have increasingly turned to automation. But the one recruitment strategy that hasn’t really taken hold is increasing wages.

An explanation lies partly in Prime Minister Shinzō Abe’s signature fiscal policy, known as “Abenomics,” which relies in part on using monetary policies to weaken the yen so as to make exports cheaper for foreigners—which has increased profits for Japan’s manufacturers. In theory, higher corporate profits should have led to higher wages and an increase in consumer spending. Instead, Japan’s corporations have chosen to sit on the piles of cash they’ve earned from Abe’s fiscal policy. Each spring, over the past six years of Abenomics, the leaders of Japan’s major industries have ceded remarkably little ground to unions during the annual wage negotiations known as shuntō. Workers have responded by saving what little cash they have, rather than spending it. And while a weaker yen has helped corporations increase exports, it has also made importing products and materials more expensive, which contributes to weakened buying power for Japan’s increasingly cash-strapped households. Overall, workers are spending an average of 11 percent more time to earn the same salary they were bringing home about 20 years ago, and some are working unpaid overtime on top of that. Even the most promising gains leave room for pessimism: In June, government data showed that inflation-adjusted wages rose at a pace not seen since 1997, but that was mostly due to large one-off summer bonuses

In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases of karōshi. In 2013, a 31-year-old journalist working for Japan’s national broadcaster died of heart failure after working 159 overtime hours in a single month, prompting lawmakers to pass legislation aimed at creating greater awareness of the dangers of karōshi. In 2015, a 24-year-old rookie employee at Japan’s largest advertising firm, Dentsu, took her own life under similar circumstances.

The fact that karōshi risk has spread outside Japan’s “lifetime employment” system appears to be related, in part, to a series of legislative changes. A karōshi-prevention measure set to go into effect next year will restrict overtime to 45 hours during normal months, though it allows for up to 100 overtime hours during busier months. Many workers who have come to rely on overtime wages have simply responded by taking on second jobs, according to Lancers data. That development has been helped by a separate recent decision, meant to improve labor mobility, in which Japan’s Ministry of Labor canceled a law that had prevented workers from taking a second job without the approval of their primary employer.

Jun Kobayashi, who has three service-industry jobs that keep him on his feet for as many as 70 hours most weeks, is a reluctant sort of pioneer in the new class of Japanese workers. When I met him on a damp, humid afternoon near the end of June, he barely had time for the subway ride between the job he’d worked that morning and the one he’d work that night. As we hurtled through the spiderweb of tunnels that sprawl out beneath central Tokyo, I asked Kobayashi whether his bosses forced him to work as many hours as he did. “It’s true that they really rely on me,” he said. “But if I didn’t work so many hours I wouldn’t be able to get by.”
