Jack’s is owned by Tesco, and up to 60 stores will roll out across the UK in the coming months.

Aldi and Lidl have seen soaring popularity in the UK in the past decade thanks to their lower pricing and simpler shopping experience.

The first Jack’s store will be unveiled later today by Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire.

Named after Tesco founder Jack Cohen, who launched the company 99 years ago, the new chain fits in with his original “pile-it-high, sell-it-cheap” ethos which earned him the nickname “Slasher Jack”.

Tesco hope to take back from of the 13.1 per cent market share currently enjoyed by Lidl and Aldi.

The German supermarket’s growth continues to outstrip that of the Big 5 despite many attempts at stemming the tide of customers switching to the cheaper retailers.

Tesco have fought back by slashing costs and closing unprofitable stores. Earlier this year it shut down Tesco Direct, the online homeware and furniture arm of the business.

They have also launched a selection of cheaper products under in-house brand names such as Butcher’s Choice.

And while Tesco is currently still the biggest supermarket in the UK with a 27.4 per cent share, they will be concerned by the merger of Asda and Sainsbury’s which would make the combined company the biggest chain in the UK.

Jack’s will open in the site of a building which was originally supposed to be a Tesco but has lain empty since 2014, when the retailer halted expansion plans.

Jack’s has until now been kept very quiet by Tesco, with staff and visitors asked to sign confidentially agreements, according to The Guardian.

The UK’s biggest retailer invited reporters to join chief executive Dave Lewis at its site in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, on Wednesday.

It simply said it will be “sharing some exciting news” and did not give further detail, but earlier advertised for staff for a “new store format” in Chatteris.

Many of the stores set to open in the coming months will take the place of Metro stores.

Neil Wilson, chief market analyst at Markets.com, said of the launch to Sky: “I think having a separate brand is really interesting as it allows it to offer different products at different price points without affecting its core Tesco brand.

“It lets Tesco take the fight to the discounters on a level playing field – no need to dilute margins at core Tesco, just offer something different to the more value-conscious customers.”

In other attempts to protect their market share in the UK, Tesco announced earlier this year they would be joining forces with French supermarket Carrefour to help cut costs in a move some analysts have predicted could mitigate any price rises due to Brexit for shoppers.

Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis said: “By working together and making the most of our collective product expertise and sourcing capability, we will be able to serve our customers even better, further improving choice, quality and value.”

The in-form fly half will be opposed to a player many regard currently as the world’s best, Wellington and All Blacks No.10 Beauden Barrett.

Coach Dave Wessels said Debreczeni’s performance in last week’s resounding bonus point victory over the Sharks was the best he had seen from him.

This from a player who appeared all but lost to the Rebels last year when he took up a contract with Japanese side Honda Heat.

So late in the piece did the 24-year-old return to the fray that he isn’t even officially a contract Rebels player, instead he remains on the team’s supplementary list.

But Wessels can be glad Debreczeni did make the decision to return, given how crucial he has been in his side’s 4-1 start to the season.

“I’m just very pleased with the way Jack’s playing,” Wessels said.

SHOWDOWN: Rebels primed to break Kiwi curse

“Probably the most pleasing thing on Friday night was Jack’s performance.

“That’s certainly the best I’ve seen him play. I feel like every week he’s getting better and better — the more he plays with Will (Genia), the better he gets.”

The Hurricanes, 3-1, are one of the favourites to claim the Super Rugby title.

One of the keys to their charge is Barrett.

But Wessels is adamant he is stoppable.

“He’s the best player in the world, probably,” Wessels said.

“He links the inside and outside of their attack together pretty well.

“But there’s parts of the game that he doesn’t enjoy doing so much and that’s the stuff, if we want to contain him in defence, we’ve got to make him do.”

Fullback Dane Haylett-Petty and hooker Jordan Uelese have recovered from injuries and are available to play.

The Rebels also announced yesterday that centre David Horwitz would leave the club at the end of the season to take up a contract with Irish club Connacht.

The expectant mother (played by Olympia Valance) confront Father Jack Callahan (Andrew Morley), urging him to move to Queensland where he can stick with the parish and raise their baby as a long-distance dad. 

However, the vicar took her offer, threw it on to the barbie and vowed to turn his back on the church and stay by Paige and the baby. 

“What’s there to escape for now?” asked Jack. “I know about the baby and I want to support you. I know this won’t be easy but let’s give it try.”  

Fans celebrated at Paige’s joy and didn’t hesitate to congratulate the couple on Twitter. 

“Yay looks like Paige is staying  In Erinsborough,” squealed one fan, as another followed: “Yes Paige, take the offer! Stay in Erinsborough! But stay nice liken you are now, don’t go back to being a pain.”

A third cried: “Got to give it to Paige. I’m not her biggest fan, but I like what she’s saying to Jack now. Not excluding him from the baby’s life,” before one more cried: “Oh thank goodness Paige isn’t leaving!” 

Elsewhere, Toadie Rebecchi (Ryan Moloney) was dealt a brutal blow as Karl Kennedy (Alan Fletcher) arrived at his London hospital bedside with two pieces of tragic news. 

“Sonya went in to labor last night, and lost the baby,” he sighed, as Toadie wept. “I’m afraid there’s more mate. Sonya knows you and Andrea spent the night together.

“Something like she saw you on Skype?”

Andrea – or Fake Dee Bliss (Madeleine West) – appears to be out of the picture as Neighbours returns to Ramsay Street next week. 

Neighbours continues tomorrow at 1.45pm and is repeated 5.30pm on Channel 5.

The spoilers suggest that Hilary will announce that she’s pregnant, a juicy tidbit that is sure to send the Winters family reeling.

According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, Lauren will have no other choice but to accept Jack’s offer and hand over Fenmore’s to him. When her deal with Eric Forrester (John McCook) falls through, she has no other choice but to accept Jack’s offer and hope that he will allow her to head the company like he promised. It becomes evident that tensions will be high between Lauren and Jack when he has a hard time allowing her to run the show. The Young and the Restless spoilers indicate that the feud between Ashley (Eileen Davidson) and Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) heat up when they are forced to work under the same roof. As you can imagine, Gloria (Judith Chapman) refuses to be left out of the spotlight and brags about the position that Jack promised her.

Nick And Chelsea Grow Closer

The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) and Nick (Joshua Morrow) will become closer and one member of the Newman clan will have a serious issue with it. Victor (Eric Braeden) doesn’t think it’s a good idea that Nick takes up a relationship with his brother, Adam’s (Justin Hartley) wife and tries to discourage him from it. Victor suggests to Chelsea that it is not a good idea because if Nick finds out that Christian isn’t his son, it would devastate him. It seems like a very good time to bring Adam on the scene to stir up some drama in the Newman family. So far, no word on Adam’s recast.

Sharon Forced To Keep A Secret

The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Sharon will be forced to keep another secret from her family and friends in Genoa City. Dylan came home so he could tell her goodbye before he enters into the witness protection program. According to the Young and the Restless spoilers, Sharon cannot tell anyone that he returned home or that Dylan joined to witness protection program. Dylan told her that they found out he was an undercover cop and his safety, as well as hers, is at stake. Of course, Sharon will keep his secret and feel much better knowing that he is safe. Nothing was worse than believing that he was dead.
