The biggest night in UK music opened in grand style with the biggest star from the biggest musical movie on top a mountain of red jackets. It may be a ceremony to celebrate pop music, but the Greatest Showman soundtrack has dominated music charts around the world throughout 2018. Jackman performed The Greatest Show, just one of his numbers from the smash-hit movie. British fans will have another chance to see him do all this and much more when he returns to the O2 Arena plus major shows in Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester in just a few months. 

Hugh Jackman – The Man. The Music. The Show. Tour (yes, that is the rather dramatic way it is punctuated) will see the Tony Award-winning musicals legend take to the stage in Manchester, Birmingham and London in May 2019.

He will be accompanied by a live orchestra and give fans exactly what they want with a roof-raising array of songs from The Greatest Showmen, as well as his other huge box office musical smash, Les Miserables. 

Fans should probably expect a tune or two from Oklahoma. Jackman made his UK musicals debut in the classic show back in 1998. 

It was the moment he was introduced to the world as a budding star of stage AND screen.

The talented star also won a Tony Award in 2004 for his lead role in The Boy From Oz, the musical based on the life and music of Peter Allen.

Among many other recordings, Jackman performed on the soundtrack for animated film Happy Feet.

The hit movie musical didn’t win over the critics but certainly did with the fans. The Greatest Showman was not only a box office hit, but its soundtrack was the best-selling album of 2018 worldwide. Now Jackman has revealed the real reason he was cast as PT Barnum was thanks to his stint hosting the Oscars back in 2009. Speaking with Deadline, the 50-year-old said: “Yeah, yeah 2009. I would do it again.”

Jackman continued: “They inquired about me doing it again a couple of times but I was working. [It was with Bill Condon] and Larry Mark.

“And actually it was after that that Larry Mark said, ‘We should really do a movie musical.’

“He said, ‘Why don’t we do P.T. Barnum?’ And I was like, ‘OK.’

“That’s how long ago that was! I didn’t know it would take us nine years, eight years.”

Speaking with Radio 5 Live, the actor said: “If a genuine opportunity came up where it felt like the right thing to do, then yep, I’d get the top hat back out.”

Nevertheless, there’s the small issue of Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which made the movie.

Jackman clarified: “We have a situation in the business where the company that did it has been sold to Disney, so there are a lot of spinning plates right now.”

He added: “I’m not sure what they would do, but it did take a while to get the first one up, and it’s not to be underestimated how difficult it is to get a musical up and going.

“But it’s clear to me and to everyone that people love these characters.

“I loved this movie, I loved this character and it was one of the great joys of my life.”

Will there be The Greatest Showman 2?

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Jackman gave fans hope for a sequel.

He said: “If a genuine opportunity came up where it felt like the right thing to do, then yep, I’d get the top hat back out.”

But Jackman’s excitement for a potential sequel depends on the upcoming Disney-Fox merger.

The mouse-house is set to acquire Fox, the studio behind The Greatest Showman.

Jackman explained: “We have a situation in the business where the company that did it has been sold to Disney, so there are a lot of spinning plates right now.

“I’m not sure what they would do, but it did take a while to get the first one up, and it’s not to be underestimated how difficult it is to get a musical up and going.

“But it’s clear to me and to everyone that people love these characters.

“I loved this movie, I loved this character and it was one of the great joys of my life,” he added.

The Greatest Showman has made £341million ($ 434.9m) worldwide at the box office.

Critics did not look favourably on the flashy movie-musical but fervour from fans late in the box office game propelled the movie to soaring heights.

In fact, The Greatest Showman soundtrack was number one on the album chart for an impressive 21 weeks.

The film’s soundtrack is still holding strong at number three on the chart, a year after its debut.

Jackman has been the subject of speculation from a wholly different fanbase, too – Marvel fans.

With the aforementioned Disney-Fox merger in the works, Marvel fans are hoping for an X-Men and Avengers: Endgame crossover.

FandomWire cited Google as a source for the potential crossover.

The Marvel site pointed out if you search the phrase “famous Hugh Jackman movies” on Google, Avengers: Endgame is listed as part of the actor’s resume.

Of course, Google has been known to have glitches before, and this could simply be an algorithmic mistake.

There has yet to be anything close to confirmation that Jackman will cameo in Avengers 4.

And the Disney-Fox merger has yet to be finalised, so there is no legal way for Fox’s X-Men characters to wind up in the MCU.

However, the deal is expected to go through within in the first months of this year.

How the Disney-Fox merger impacts The Greatest Showman, X-Men and Avengers remains to be seen.

Fans of movie-musicals and comic-book-movies both will be waiting with bated breath.

The 50-year-old star played ‘s Wolverine across nine X-Men movies and yesterday paid tribute to the creator of his character.

Stan Lee sadly passed away yesterday aged 95-years-old, and Jackman has spoken warmly of him on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

The actor reminisced of a time he was at Comic Con and was glad to be humbled by the late legend.

Jackman said: “Let me just say to the family and to the legion of fans, I remember Stan as a true gentleman who had a glint in his eye.”

He continued: “He’s a creative genius, he thought outside the box, he created a whole universe that changed the lives of many people – mine included.

“But when I met him…first of all if you ever want to get a real understanding of where you are in the world, and you think, ‘Ah I’m Wolverine, I’m walking into Comic Con, this is my spot right? This is a good day for me.’

“And I was on a red carpet, and I was the only one on there. And no one was taking my photo because at the other end was Stan Lee.

“There were about three hundred photographers and interviews all on Stan. Stan, God bless you, you’re one of the greats.”

Jackman also tweeted a picture of himself with Lee on Twitter.

The caption read: “We’ve lost a creative genius.

“Stan Lee was a pioneering force in the superhero universe.

“I’m proud to have been a small part of his legacy and …. to have helped bring one of his characters to life. #StanLee #Wolverine.”

This weekend the Telluride Film Festival is getting a sneak peek at some of the movies that will be hitting the festival circuit in the coming weeks. A good amount of them had already debuted at the Venice Film Festival this past week, but one that we hadn’t yet heard anything about yet was the political drama The Front Runner, directed by Jason Reitman and starring Hugh Jackman. That changed today.

After the first trailer for The Front Runner debuted earlier this week, audiences got to see Hugh Jackman in action as the leading candidate for President of the United States of America as the nominee for the Democratic party in 1988 who destroyed his chances at victory with a little scandal. So what do the first reactions out of Telluride have to say? Find out below.

The Front Runner Reactions

Since Telluride is a much smaller film festival in the mountains of Telluride, Colorado, there aren’t tons of press up there like when the Sundance Film Festival unfolds in Utah. But there are still some brief reactions to take note of from critics and audience members. Most of them are very complimentary, but there are some shortcomings to be noted:

Meanwhile, the first reviews dig a little deeper into the movie and have some nitpicking to do, but mostly have positive things to say about the timely film.

David Ehrlich at IndieWire wasn’t very impressed with the film:

Judging by Jason Reitman’s lucid but lifeless attempt to dramatize the final weeks of his campaign, Hart’s scandal was the beginning of the end for political discourse in this country. The film takes that fact for granted. The twin questions that drive “The Front Runner” from its Altman-esque first shot to its whimper of an ending are more complex and open-ended than that: To what degree was the fallout Hart’s fault, and what role do the media (and the American people) play in the supposed degradation of our national priorities?

In Reitman’s hands — which are confident and clumsy in equal measure — these hefty matters play out as a mordant political comedy that tries to split the difference between “Veep” and “All the President’s Men.” That’s a tough needle to thread, and it doesn’t take long before “The Front Runner” throws in the towel on that idea. After an energetic and character-driven first act, the movie dulls into a talky civics debate that flattens every member of its massive cast into lame totems for the respective ideas each of them is meant to represent.

Stephen Farber at The Hollywood Reporter writes:

This film, adapted from Matt Bai’s book about the Hart campaign, is both provocative and somewhat disappointing.

The film never quite clarifies its own attitude toward Hart. It simply doesn’t spend enough time with him to allow the audience to decide whether he was a truly transformative politician undone by tabloid reporters or just another slick operator. This robs the film of a tragic dimension that it might have achieved.

Nevertheless, given the limitations of the role, Jackman delivers one of his finest performances. He allows us to see the character’s charisma and essential decency, along with a certain solipsism that has undone many leaders.

Sasha Stone over at The Wrap threw some compliments at the movie:

This is Reitman’s second film this year, after “Tully,” with Charlize Theron beating back postpartum depression. Though the director is known for taking risks and sometimes failing, pulling off these two very different films in the same year is be applauded.

Reitman is more in his element with “The Front Runner,” especially in the film’s first half, as we dive into what politics was like in 1988. The film has to manage disparate elements in its second half, like the Harts’ strained marriage due consideration alongside the political turmoil.

To its credit, “The Front Runner” doesn’t send us out the door with any easy solutions. It doesn’t tell us how we should feel or pretend to know all the answers. For some, that might be frustrating, but “The Front Runner” delivers more than enough provocative material to make it a wild, occasionally hopeful, often depressing ride.

Gregory Ellwood over at The Playlist walked away mostly satisfied:

Reitman chronicles this sprawling opera by taking a layered and ensemble-heavy page from legendary director Robert Altman. Yes, Jackman’s impressive portrayal of Hart is at the center of “The Front Runner” (it’s one of the best performances of his career), but Reitman uses a large cast of characters to give depth to the events in question. Beyond the aforementioned Farminga, Paxton and Athie, Jackman is surrounded by notable performers such as J.K. Simmons as his disheartened campaign manager, Alfred Molina as the editor of the Post, Ari Graynor as Post reporter Ann Devroy, Steve Zissis as an Herald reporter in over his head, Molly Ephraim as a member of the senior campaign staff sympathetic to Rice, Kevin Pollack as the editor of the Herald who eventually comes in direct conflict with Hart, and both Josh Brenner and Alex Karpovsky as campaign advisors, among others. Similarly to Mike Leigh‘s “Peterloo,” also screening at Telluride, Reitman finds moments for them all to shine.

He also employs Altman’s technique of panning across a scene without cutting and zooming in on one conversation, pulling back and then focusing on another. It’s a new ground for the “Up In The Air” director and you often wish there were more opportunities in the film for him to use it. When a scene is constructed in a conventional manner the film often lacks the same energy and stylistically feels flat. In those moments, it’s that exceptional cast that keeps you engaged even if you’re well-aware of Hart’s fate.

The early buzz for The Front Runner sounds mostly good so far. There are some negative reactions who aren’t all that impressed with the movie, but it seems like Hugh Jackman is at least being universally praised for his performance, even if some think it’s not enough to make the movie more compelling. Even so, this sounds like a timely and relevant movie for our currently political climate, especially with the #MeToo movement happening at the same time.

The Front Runner will start hitting theaters on November 7, 2018.

Last year Jackman bowed out as Wolverine in Logan after almost 20 years in the role.

However since then Deadpool star Reynolds has been lobbying the Aussie actor for a big return.

And now the biggest hint ever that Wolverine will be returning for the X-Force movie occurred at San Diego Comic Con.

During a panel promoting Deadpool 2: The Super Duper Cut, an extended version of the end credits scene was screened.

Fans will remember Deadpool travel back in time to X-Men Origins: Wolverine to assassination the other version of his character from the not so fondly remember superhero movie.

And all the while Jackman’s Wolverine was looking on – from old footage – but this time another line was added.

According to the extended clip saw Deadpool say “I love you” to Wolverine.

And then added: “One day your old pal Wade’s gonna ask you to get back in the saddle again. When he does, say yes.”

If that’s not a teaser that Wolverine will be turning up in the X-Force movie, as he does in the comics, then we don’t know what is.

To add to this Reynolds once again reiterated that he wanted Wolverine to return to team up with Deadpool.

At the panel he told fans: “You never know.”

Speaking with TMZ, Jackman said: “Ship has sailed Ryan. Sorry brother.”

The Wolverine star was also asked on GMA and said: “Ryan…back it up a little.

“Play a little hard to get. It’s too much. It’s not sexy.”

Of course the other option is that another actor will play Wolverine in the X-Force movie, that is unless Jackman is playing it coy.

Director Michael Gracey heaped praise on their genuine bond, saying: “It was really wonderful watching friendship build and watching the effect it had on the number [The Other Side].

“The song by the end becomes a celebration as they head into the circus, and you see Phillip’s mind blown by what he’s agreed to.”

The song ends with Efron’s character clapping eyes on Anne Wheeler (Zendaya) for the first time.

“Falling in love… that’s an incredible arc to have over the course of one song,” Gracey added.

The Greatest Showman was an enormous box office success, making over $ 430 million worldwide at the box office despite a slow start just before Christmas – and despite a lukewarm reception from critics.

It’s also been a music phenomenon, with the soundtrack album enjoying 14 non-consecutive weeks at the top of the UK charts.

This Is Me won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, and has also had huge success on singles charts around the world.

Its other stars include Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Keala Settle, Paul Sparks and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

The Greatest Showman is available on Blu-ray and DVD on May 14.

The two actors may have crossed over in the critically-panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but that was back when the Merc with a Mouth, didn’t have, well, a mouth.

But having introduced the world to Deadpool in 2016, to great reviews and an incredible box office performance, Reynolds now wants to do a Wolverine crossover with Jackman justice.

But the only problem is the Aussie star bowed out as Wolverine in Logan last year, retiring from the role.

Nevertheless Reynolds is adamant in wanting to convince Jackman to return.

Reynolds, who stars in Deadpool 2 later this month, told : “He’s alive and well in my timeline.

“There is a Logan running around out there with a little bushy chest and his little sharpy, sharpy claws, and he is alive and well and ready to go. I would love that.

“I think convincing Hugh of that would be a near-impossible feat, but there’s no human being I love more than Hugh Jackman in that universe, and equally so as a friend. He’s just the best.

“I already miss him as Logan, so I’m one of those guys that whenever I see him, I’m like, ‘Come on, man. Just one more. Come on. We’ll do it together. It’ll be fun. Come on! On three. Here we go, together. One, two, three, together,’ and it’s always just me saying it.”’

He said: “I’m hesitating, because I could totally see how that’s the perfect fit. But the timing may be wrong.”

Since then the Aussie star has admitted he’s ready to see another actor take on the role.

And with Disney having acquired the rights to the X-Men from Fox, it’s possible we could see a new Wolverine in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and future Deadpool outing.

Also, with Josh Brolin’s Cable already providing a gruff contrast to Deadpool’s silly antics, is a Wolverine crossover really necessary?

Deadpool 2 is released in UK cinemas on May 15, 2018.
