Writer/director/podcaster Kevin Smith has visited J.J. Abrams‘ Star Wars Episode 9 set, and he hated every second of it. “It was dumb,” Smith said of the set. “I looked around, shrugged my shoulders, and said, ‘This is the best you got?’ I interrupted J.J. in the middle of a take and just said, ‘Hey man, thanks for the invite, but this sucks. I’m outta here.’”

I’m kidding, of course. Smith, as rabid a Star Wars fan as you’ll ever find, brought back several tidbits from his travels to the film’s London set, and they’re all overwhelmingly positive – including how he witnessed a performance that drove him to tears. Watch him recount his visit in a video below.

Kevin Smith’s Star Wars Episode 9 Set Visit

Smith was a guest on Good Morning America and regaled the hosts with tales of his travels to a galaxy far, far away. In case you can’t watch the video above, I’ll transcribe his relevant quotes:

“Number one, J.J.’s doing the Lord’s work, man. This movie looks fantastic. It’s a year away, but man it looks fantastic. I wept on set because I saw somebody give a career-best performance. Somebody I’ve seen in these movies before. I rolled a tear, it was so darn powerful. Biggest set I’ve ever seen in my life. The dude’s not directing a movie, it’s like he’s directing a small country. The thing is so massive.”

Smith says he saw two scenes being filmed, one of which was “absolutely amazing,” and says he overheard plot details while he was there – but of course, he couldn’t reveal what those details might be.

Since we’re legally bound by Internet Law to speculate about every single element of Star Wars news, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, let’s talk about which actor may have driven Smith to tears on the set. Could it have been Mark Hamill? Does his Force ghost get a powerful close-up moment that could have sent Smith over the edge? It doesn’t seem likely that it was any of the younger cast members, because their careers are still relatively fresh. If I were to bet money on this, I’d put all of my chips on Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian. Audiences haven’t seen Williams as the live-action Lando since 1983’s Return of the Jedi, so it makes sense that Smith might get caught up in the emotion of seeing him return.

Smith always has exceptionally nice things to say about the productions he visits, so keep that in mind when digesting his comments here. He also visited the set of The Force Awakens and admitted to breaking down into tears on that set as well, and StarWarsUnderworld reminds us that Smith actually lent his voice to one of the Stormtroopers during post-production on that movie.

Star Wars The Last Jedi - Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker

Maybe it’s for the best that Luke Skywalker poofed out of existence and joined the Force at the end of The Last Jedi, because Mark Hamill appears to be similarly So Done with Skywalker Family Drama. In an interview with Screen Rant, Hamill expressed his concern with “over-saturation,” given Lucasfilm’s Marvel-style release process. Though he does admit that the standalone films offer a blank canvas with “infinite possibilities.” Like… another Luke Skywalker movie?

What is the correct viewing order of the Star Wars movies? This is, of course, one of the fundamental debates that fuels the Star Wars fandom. Now, Mark Hamill has weighed in on this debate as well. In an interview with Collider, Hamill defaulted to the in-universe “chronological order” approach – that is, Episode order. So, no love for (the new and improved) Machete Order?

Thandie Newton Solo

Thandie Newton is remaining tight-lipped about her character in Solo, but she teased that the one-second clip that reveals her character (Val) in the latest trailer “tells you a lot” about her. Check out Entertainment Tonight for some more of Newton’s reflections on the shooting process.

The filmmaker has already explained how he felt revealing Snoke’s origins wouldn’t have served the direct narrative in The Last Jedi, but has now added further comments.

Johnson appeared at the Star Wars The Last Jedi Q&A for BAFTA, where he suggested where Snoke’s backstory could be revealed in the future.

According to Cinema Blend, the director said: “In this particular story, it’s much more like the original trilogy, where with Snoke if you think about the actual scenes, if suddenly I had paused one of the scenes to give a 30 second monologue about who he was, it would have kind of stopped the scene in its tracks, I realised.

“Even though it could have been interesting, something that fans were interested in, as storytellers, we have to kind of serve what the scenes need to be.”

Ridley said: “Well I, like Mark [Hamill], had some reservations about the script. 

“I thought, ‘Is John [Boyega, who plays Finn]? He’s away from me, and I don’t want to be away from him.’”

Episode IX will be released in UK cinemas on December 20, 2019.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now playing in theaters everywhere, which means it’s time for us to pivot onto the next Star Wars chapter! The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams will be returning to helm Star Wars: Episode IX, and news recently broke revealing Abrams pitched the story for the next Star Wars film to Disney CEO Bob Iger today. This all but confirms that any development on the new Star Wars from Colin Trevorrow‘s time attached to the project is being tossed out to make way for whatever Abrams has up his sleeve.

The Last Jedi isn’t even 24-hours-old yet, but director J.J. Abrams is wasting no time getting started on the next Star Wars film. Laughing Place confirms that during a big press conference that covered both the release of The Last Jedi and the historic Disney-Fox deal, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that J.J. Abrams would be pitching the Star Wars: Episode IX story to him today (December 15, 2017).

Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow was announced to helm Star Wars: Episode IX back in 2015, and remained attached to the film up until early this year, where Trevorrow left the film. After Trevorrow left the project, rumors abounded that the filmmaker had clashed with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy:

“There’s one gatekeeper when it comes to Star Wars and it’s Kathleen Kennedy,” says a veteran movie producer, who has worked with the studio chief. “If you rub Kathleen Kennedy the wrong way — in any way — you’re out. You’re done. A lot of these young, new directors want to come in and say, ‘I want to do this. I want to do that.’ A lot of these guys — Lord and Miller, Colin Trevorrow — got very rich, very fast and believed a lot of their own hype. And they don’t want to play by the rules. They want to do shit differently. And Kathleen Kennedy isn’t going to fuck around with that.”

The news that Abrams is pitching the story for the next Star Wars film now all but confirms that any story development that Trevorrow worked on with writers Derek Connolly and Jack Thorne has been tossed into the trash compactor to make way for whatever Abrams has in store. Of his decision to return to the franchise, Abrams said:

“I had no intention to return. But when the opportunity presented itself to finish a story that we had begun with these new characters, to tell the last chapter of their story, it felt like there was a chance to do it in a way where we could go beyond, and do better than we did in Seven.”

Abrams gave The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson plenty of material to work with for his episode, and now Johnson gets to return the favor, with his Last Jedi ending opening the door for multiple possibilities.

Star Wars: Episode IX is set to open December 20, 2019.

Among the high-profile films to receive their premiere dates is Star Wars: Episode IX. Originally slated to theaters at some point in 2019, the movie will now officially arrive in standard and 3D theaters May 24, 2019. Episode IX will be directed by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow.

Also noteworthy is a new official release date for the still-untitled fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, which was originally scheduled to hit theaters in July 2019. The movie, which will bring back franchise star Harrison Ford (who will be nearly 80 years old when the film hits theaters) and director Steven Spielberg, will now hit theaters a year later on July 10, 2020.

Outside of those two blockbuster releases, there are quite a few other big releases on the horizon for Disney, too.

The animated sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 will arrive in standard and 3D theaters on November 21, 2018.  It will be followed by the sequel to one of the most successful animated features of all time, Frozen 2, on November 27, 2019. Frozen 2 will also get a 3D release.

A new, original animated feature titled Gigantic will then debut November 25, 2020.

The schedule also has some major live-action projects coming up, too.

Following on the success of The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast, the live-action adaptation of The Lion King will hit theaters July 19, 2019. Director Jon Favreau, who helmed The Jungle Book, will be behind the camera for Lion King.

Selma and 13th director Ava DuVernay helms the upcoming live-action feature based on Madeleine L’Engle’s children’s story A Wrinkle in Time, which is now scheduled to hit theaters March 9, 2018. It will be followed a year later by the live-action comedy Magic Camp, premieres April 6, 2019.

In addition to the official projects identified in Disney’s release schedule, there are also a few placeholders for unidentified upcoming movies. Among the unidentified features is a Marvel Studios movie scheduled for August 7, 2020; a Pixar movie hitting theaters June 18, 2021; and a Disney Animation feature premiering November 24, 2021.
